In short, are the things that trouble us Devil, or Diagnosis?Dr. Lee Warren revisits a 2023 episode to address recent inquiries about mental health struggles, particularly obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and whether they stem from mental issues, spiritual components, or both. The episode explores Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz's work on neuroplasticity, the mind-brain distinction, and practical self-brain surgery techniques to manage negative thinking. He co-founded Dentity to solve the trust problem in peer-to-peer transactions and discusses the surprising breadth of use cases they're already tackling, from frat parties to notaries.Jeffrey then drops loads of knowledge about what he's learned building a consumer product, from the user experience and onboarding lessons learned, to the messaging that resonates with consumers and businesses (including overcoming the baggage with the term “web3”).Jeffrey continues with a bit of a hot take about the role of industry working groups and standards bodies, and how he prefers doing over talking. Who is the Little Guy?The Little Guy is a version of yourself that lives in your head. It's an inner voice that sows doubt, fear, and self-hatred. The little guy is a dark part of you that tears you down and pushes you to be petty and negative. It's an inner voice that we must all overcome if we seek to live happy, healthy lives. Why is overcoming the Little Guy important?Because the Little Guy robs leaders of valuable thinking time, resulting in less effective solutions, less inspirational interaction, and even less time leading. To lead well, leaders need the full capacity of their minds. They must have time to think, and those thoughts have to be very clear. Our brains are kind of like computers. We only have so much space available to process things. If we clog our brains up with the unproductive, maybe even counterproductive, thoughts of the Little Guy, we're reducing our capacity to TPL (Think, Plan, and Lead). To be the best leaders we can be, we must learn how to overcome the Little Guy, because it's destructive, distracting, and takes you off task. How do we contain the Little Guy?One - Acknowledge that the Little Guy occupies space in your head and commit to containing it.Two - Keep the Little Guy contained. At the time of big decisions and important interactions ask yourself, "am I containing the Little Guy?" Develop an internal leadership kata[1] tocontain the Little Guy. Optimize your Inner-Coach – the adversary of the Little Guy. Perform Hansei (self-reflection). Use the 3 Questions of the After-Action Review to do this. What was supposed to happen? What actually happened? What will I commit to do next time to improve the outcome? Approach everything with Shoshin – the Beginner's Mind.Three - Read the book, “The Wise Advocate the Inner Voice of strategic leadership”, by Art Kleiner, Jeffrey Schwartz, and Josie Thompson.Four - Develop a Life Purpose that is noble, a Life Vision, and a personal Code of Ethics.Five - Gain input, advice, and feedback from a mentor, or personal board of advisors.Six - Practice, practice, practice.Key ToolsWrite us at info@tplshow.org for a free guide on how to contain the Little Guy.“The Wise Advocate the Inner Voice of strategic leadership”, by Art Kleiner, Jeffrey Schwartz, and Josie Thompson.Full Show Notes & Transcript - https://www.dropbox.com/s/n7i7dldups0983l/Show%20Notes%20%26%20Transcript%20for%20Episode%2010%20-%20The%20Little%20Guy.pdf?dl=0 Episode Transcript[00:00] Luke: Everybody. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. The impact of the pandemic on the mental health of all Americans can't be overstated. Anxiety depression and suicides are at record levels, with disproportionate impact on the young and elderly, who struggle with isolation, fear and loneliness. A recent N. Y. Times article in December of 2021, cited a survey of 1320 Therapists. 9 out of 10 reported that they are being overwhelmed with clients seeking help, many for the first time over anxiety, financial stress and other issues, and that they fear the problem is getting much worse. The solution to anxiety or depression is not one dimensional, but many professionals seek a reductionist answer focusing on a “one size fits all” answer or response to the problem. For a wonderful overview of multiple factors that can impact mental health and anxiety, I recommend a podcast by Timothy Keller called the Wounded Spirit. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/timothy-keller-sermons-podcast-by-gospel-in-life/id352660924?i=1000543352798 Of course anyone suffering from anxiety or depression should seek professional help and this podcast is not offering medical advice. Everyone must examine all options available when addressing anxiety or depression. In 2019 I read a book called You are not Your Brain by Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz. I found the central concept of the book fascinating: In essence much like wearing in a path in the ground by repeatedly walking over the same turf over and over again you can repeatedly wear grooves into your own brain by repeated negative messaging. Your brain, a passive organ, then broadcasts these negative messages back to you whether you want to hear them or not: I call them “Bad Brain messages” that can lead to anxiety and stress. Listen, as I interview Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz, as he discusses his Book, You are not your Brain, and how you can help turn off Bad Brain messages and use the concept of neuroplasticity as one tool to deal with anxiety and stress. How do you make difficult decisions under pressure? How do you avoid being "triggered" by some bad behaviour, choice words or a surprising event? These are important questions for any executive, professional or entrepreneur, daily. Managing your mind is critical. In practice, this means developing greater conscious of what you're thinking, what you're paying attention to, how you're feeling. Tapping into your inner voice - and an imaginary third party (you in the future, or a person you respect) - in order to work out the best course of action. My guest, Josie Thomson, master coach, author and speaker, talks about how to tap into your Wise Advocate. And she describes what it takes to coach somebody effectively - deep care, listening, attention and using your intuition as to what you observe, feel and sense in the moment. This is a wide-ranging, deep conversation about the human condition - our frailties, strengths, potential - and how we can nurture it, informed by a greater appreciation, understanding and application of neuroscience.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------For details about Josie see: https://josiethomson.com/Her book (with Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz and Art Kleiner): The Wise Advocate: The Inner Voice of Strategic Leadership: https://josiethomson.com/product/the-wise-advocate-the-inner-voice-of-strategic-leadership/Take Josie's resilience test: https://josiethomson.com/quiz/------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sign up to my newsletter Flashes+Sparks for stimuli, ideas, guidance and tips on how to lead your team, organisation or self more effectively, delivered straight to your inbox: http://bit.ly/36WRpriIf you're not subscribed already and would like to join this youtube channel you can do so here: http://bit.ly/3cFGk1kYou can also find me here: LinkedIn. https://bit.ly/2Z2PexPTwitter: https://bit.ly/36XavNIPersonal website: http://bit.ly/3jA0MlNHighlights of my workEvery Leader Has Flaws. The NOGGINS AND NEURONS Podcast

OVERVIEW: ...So hyper-acute, acute, subacute and chronic, those are the 4 phases...The way that you tell it's time to start is look for subacute, spontaneous recovery and then, once they plateau, after that you're not waiting for this easy ride of the brain coming back online...It's all neuroplastic change after that. You've got to borrow from some other part of the brain that's still intact and so then it becomes real learning.... EPISODE SUMMARY: In this first, full episode of NOGGINS & NEURONS: Stroke and TBI Recovery Simplified, Pete and Deb discuss the perplexing phenomenon of Learned Non-Use. This engaging conversation will help you understand: How, when and why learned non-use it occurs Common deficits and rehab approaches that contribute to learned non-use An introduction to interventions and strategies to help thwart and reverse it Join us as we start to unpack this fascinating topic. As you'll soon discover, learned non-use and other concepts that occur in and around stroke or acquired brain injury are inter-relational. As Pete eludes to in the podcast, no 2 strokes or brain injuries are the same. Our engaging conversation is a great foundational episode as we define stroke and brain injury, discuss the 4 phases of stroke, the concept of too much too soon and the sweet spot of the subacute phase. In this episode, we talked about OCD and scrupulosity. OCD is a difficult subject because the term is often thrown around as an adjective to describe perfectionistic tendencies. But true obsessive compulsive disorder is so different than the stereotypes may lead people to believe, and it can be a really serious mental health issue  — one that is undoubtedly affecting someone you know and love. It can also be especially hard on missionaries. So many people who have OCD, especially religiously themed OCD don’t know what to call their pain, and they often have only religious language or explanations for what they’re feeling. That can lead to years of deep and unnecessary suffering. And that gets to the primary reason we’re doing this episode — we hope that listeners who are suffering from OCD, or their loved ones, will hear this and recognize something in themselves that they didn’t quite understand. We really want them to know that they’re not bad or corrupt or evil, and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.Bonnie is a marriage and family therapist, mother of two, and author of several academic articles on religion and mental health. She has a bachelor’s degree in history with an emphasis in Mormon women’s history and a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, both from BYU. Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 80, originally published in March 2012. Join Jason Hartman and co-founder and director of Neuro Leadership Institute, Dr. David Rock, as they explore conceptual issues of the brain as it pertains to work, such as focus, managing distractions, why our brains feel taxed, and how to maximize mental resources. Dr. Rock explains how being able to get a mental picture makes it easier to process and hold information, but when you can't come up with a mental picture, you're more likely to lose your train of thought or have more difficulty retaining connections, causing the brain more stress. Dr. Rock also discusses optimal times for scheduling work, meetings, and undisturbed workspace. He stresses that creative work needs a lot of space in the brain, as well as a lot of quiet. “Creative work first, urgent/important second, and everything else after,” says Dr. Rock. Dr. Rock also shares the many types of quirks of the brain, such as a blue room with high ceilings increases creativity, or changing rooms actually makes it difficult to access memories formed in the previous room. His suggestion is that people need to create their own workspace. Additionally, he talks about the unconscious and conscious brain and how breakthrough moments tend to happen when trying to solve a difficult problem. The quiet brain is most important for solving problems. Dr. Rock delves into the five domains that the brain is always tracking. It is very important that we don't get a “threat” response in any of these domains because they activate the brain's pain network, leading to defensiveness. David is the founder and CEO of Results Coaching Systems (RCS), which has operations in 15 countries across the globe. In his capacity as CEO, David works with Fortune 500 clients specializing in embedding internal coaching capacity within organizations to develop leaders, retain talent, improve performance, and change culture. David Rock is one of the thought leaders in the global coaching profession. The integrated coaching system he developed in the mid-90's has been taught to over 10,000 professionals in more than fifteen countries. He is the author of Personal Best, (Simon & Schuster, 2001), Quiet Leadership (Harper Collins, 2006), Coaching with the Brain in Mind (Wiley & Sons, 2009), and Your Brain at Work (Harper Collins), which was released in October 2009. In 2004, David founded the brain-based approach to coaching, which has gathered momentum as a theory base for coaching ever since. In collaboration with several leading neuroscientists, David is working to explain the neural basis of issues like self-awareness, reflection, insight and accountability. In 2006, he co-authored a feature article in strategy business magazine with neuroscientist Dr. Jeffrey Schwartz, called “The Neuroscience of Leadership”, the most downloaded article of the year at the magazine. In September 2006, CIO magazine ran a cover story featuring David and Jeff's work called “The New Science of Change”. In late 2006, David founded the NeuroLeadership Institute and Summit, a global initiative bringing neuroscientists and leadership experts together to build a new science of leadership development. David also co-created a complete coaching curriculum at New York University (SCPS) and is a guest lecturer at universities in five countries. Website: www.NeuroLeadership.com www.DavidRock.net

Peri Shawn is an award winning author who specializes in working with leaders who want to get better results.  She works on helping people think better so that they can do better.  She is known as a profitable conversation expert and I think you will find this conversation will be extremely profitable.  Sales is both a science and an art and we explore the art and support it with the science that backs it up.  As sales people we know that we have interactions that are better than others both as sales people and as consumers so why not have the positive interactions by design. Peri tells the story of what triggered her passion for learning and teaching and that it was in fact the learning dichotomy between her two brothers that lead her down the path that she took.  As a high school teacher she became fascinated and discontented with the fact that her students were learning at a consistent level and decided to look into how she could help them better.  She started exploring the neuroscience behind the learning and started to see immediate results in the classroom.  At one of the teaching conferences she spoke at someone from the corporate world approached her and talked about the value of what she was teaching and ultimately convinced her to take her work and passion into the corporate world.  She became an action researcher and spent time looking at what actions were actually having the biggest impact. The short answer was that questions that were the best way to get optimal results.  There is ample neuroscience that supports this. Jeffrey Schwartz  studied the impact of questions on the brain.  Questions actually build new neurological connections in the brain.  You can find information about his work and studies on his website at http://www.jeffreymschwartz.com/. Challenge your thoughts and find those universal truths.  Experiment with the truisms and axioms that we hear.  We are all moving forward and we all have the resources to 'get there' we need to find what works the best for us as individuals.  It all starts with our core values.  Our values shape the lens in which we see the world and we can improve our selves while we are helping others. By changing our thinking we can change ours, and our teams behaviors, the alternative is that we try and coach or teach behavior and we simply become behavior cops.  We change our thinking by analyzing our past results and reflecting on the thinking behind the behaviors recognizing that if we don't like the results we need to change the behavior and in order to do that in a sustainable manner we need to change the thinking. Peri's definition of Selling is "Helping people with their buying decision".  The sales business is substantially different today then it was even five years ago. As sales people we need to understand where our customers are in the buying process. Listening is critical to the sales process Sales decisions are made on emotion justified by logic Can we design the emotional experience of the buying process We need to get our customer emotionally engaged Stories are a key factor to emotionally connect with your client Create stories that relate to your sales process Create an experience that your clients will tell as a story to others and they become your best sales people We discuss the neuroscience behind this We talk about addressing client concerns or objections The 10 common sales mistakes sales people make Not being clear on who is buying Forgetting why people buy Being self focused Telling mistruths Being ill prepared Taking too much of clients time Sharing what is not relevant Missing buying cues Acting like a traditional sales person Treating clients as enemies RESOURCES Connect with Peri on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/perishawnVisit Peri's professional web site: http://coachingandsalesinstitute.com/Buy Peri's book: http://www.amazon.com/Sell-More-With-Sales-Coaching/dp/1118785932Dr. John Demartini  Neuroscience Research Uri Hasson publicationsJeffrey Schwartz
