Have you ever been in a situation so ridiculous that you started looking around for hidden cameras? Well my guest on this episode, actor Sarah Randall Hunt, had so many over the top horrible first dates (admittedly several of which were her fault), that she turned them into a very sweet rom-com web series called Stupid Cupid. As the co-creator, star and producer of the series, Sarah was forced to relive a lot of bad decision-making on camera. Part therapy and part cautionary tale, this is a show that anyone who’s ever been single can relate to quite well. The first season of Stupid Cupid is available on YouTube here. Also, you can follow Sarah and all of her hilarious adventures on Instagram @sarahrandallhunt. I met Sarah through WhoHaHa, a creative community and digital content studio that celebrates and elevates women in comedy. Co-founded by creative badass Elizabeth Banks, WhoHaha partners with innovative companies to develop opportunities for comedic female creators and bring ideas to life. Please support this incredible organization and the many BIPOC, female and queer content creators out there. My new sponsor, Joyboxx would like to give one lucky listener a free Joyboxx! Maybe the top shelf of your closet? The bottom line is, if you’re not storing your pleasure products in an anti-microbial Joyboxx, you’re asking for all sorts of dirty trouble. And not the good kind of dirty either. Email us a photo of your nightstand drawer or wherever you’re storing your pleasure products. The most tragic one will receive a free Joyboxx. We’ve all been there. You have a few too many drinks with your friends. You go back to some guy's apartment. On the way in, you face plant and smash your front teeth. Okay, maybe that particular story hasn't happened to you, but it's definitely happened to someone. On Disaster Dates 2, every single story takes a turn for the ‘What the fuck?!?’ Leading off is the hilarious Gia Mora. When her date says he’s taking her to an Earth Wind & Fire concert, Gia is beyond thrilled. Unfortunately, every thought is a dream, rushing by in a stream, bringing life to the kingdom of sanctimonious assholes. Also, you might not want to date a dude if his car is known for killing people. #JustSayin   Next up, the brilliant Lisa Laureta takes us along on a couple of dates that seem bad, but after further review, are actually horrific. Let’s just say, the neck tattoo should have been all the warning she needed.   Then, bringing us home with the shittiest story on this show (you’ll get that in a moment) is the fearlessly funny Cristi Rumpza. I wish this Disaster Date had been filmed to be used as either a cautionary After School Special or a John Waters movie. I even mention my worst date ever, featuring a total drunk (not me), a legendary Chicago blues singer (also not me), and someone getting punched in the face (hopefully not me). Good times. Black lives matter. There are no rules in gender. As our guest this week Lauren Ludwig points out, you do not need to check how SOCIETY wants YOU to build something new! And in this case we are speaking about building "the androgynous superfuture we are all aiming for". Heather heard Lauren speak about gender identity on another great podcast, Coming Out with Lauren and Nicole (link below), and sought out to speak with Lauren as well. Before this conversation, when it came to gender, Heather would always feel uncomfortable being asked about identity. It is not something that exists in one singular box. Sometimes the answer is different depending on the day. And all of that is ok! Heather's own experience dealt with feeling like it had to be a choice between presenting feminine, or embracing the fluidity of the unknown, both options bringing their own challenges. This experience was amplified by Heather's head shaving, and inspired the spoken word piece "Leave", which is also linked below. There are no rules in gender. Taylor Mac uses the pronoun 'judy', as judy should. You may feel safer to share your pronouns in some spaces over others. And remember theydees and gentlethems, you never even HAVE to use a pronoun at all! You can always just refer to a person by name. Also in this episode: a great life-hack for clothes shopping! Black lives matter. The sh*t is out there. Everyday, women have to decide how to handle it in ways men just don't. What to wear, going to a party, responding to catcalls: these choices all have consequences. And there is a reason most animals in the wild avoid predators by playing dead. This episode is a conversation between Heather and Tennile Marie (@tennilemarie). Tennile brings up the lack of proper sex education she had growing up, and the questions about her own body she had to figure out for herself: How does the vagina work? Is there any way a tampon can even fit up there? Is discharge supposed to happen, or is it bad? And speaking of discharge, this episode also includes Heather asking our producer Alex to report everything he knows about discharge. Or crotch snot, as Tennile refers to it. As the conversation progresses, the focus becomes the constant state of awareness that women must adopt all the time when interacting with the world. From an early age, it is just ingrained that any decision could possibly lead to violence, and that a woman can be a target just by being a woman. Which decision will lead to the least amount of violence? Is this a situation that can be fought? Or is it better to just let predatory behavior happen, and try to move past it without really talking about it? It is important to have space to talk about topics like these. It is important to have representation in all parts of society. And it is also important to make sure you have some extra tampons in the bathroom. Whether you are a gender that needs to use them or not, never hurts to have a few extra tampons available. Thank you so much to Tennile, and thank YOU for listening! Black lives matter. Like, this can't be news right? It just does not. And yet, confronting the taste of semen is a rite of passage for many sexual awakenings. At least, part of many sexual awakenings anyway. But we know there is far more to it than that. Heather's guest Natalie shares some wonderful stories about discovering sexuality on television at a very young age, yet feeling like she was much more of a late bloomer in terms of her own sexual activity. Even when you are too young to know what is happening on the screen, you still know it is something you want to watch, but that you need to lock the door for. She discusses different uses for the arm of a couch, the hotel that inspired Mambo Night in Dirty Dancing, and how she learned that a squirting orgasm is not just something that happens in porn. Did a documentary crew follow YOUR summer camp, right to the spot where you gave your first blow job? If you meet someone you watched in film or tv when you were younger, is it REALLY a good idea to sleep with them? And did MTV REALLY produce a soft core porn aimed at teenagers??? Rivkah Reyes (@rivkah.reyes) is a comedian who has sought recovery for sex and love addiction for over two years. Lauren Flans (@lauren_flans) and Nicole Pacent (@nicolepacent) were part of a workshop at the Los Angeles LGBT Center about coming out, and when they could not find a podcast on the subject they started their own! You may recognize Nicole from our two part Poly Party episode, and rest assured this episode is just as badass. Lauren and Nicole go through both of their coming out stories, one of which resembles the complexity of a short film. This then reminds Heather of a pretty solid anecdote. Of course, when pod creators sit down with other pod creators, there’s always a good discussion about the impact the podcast has had on your life. But when they get to the GROSS stories, it involves a literally award-winning tale that takes the cake over any shitting-your-pants story we’ve ever heard...even though it did not happen to anybody appearing on this episode. Black lives matter. Lana Danielyan (@lanadanielyan) moved to the states from Russia when she was 12. She went all the way through law school and working as an attorney before upending everything and becoming an actor. Then there is also the experience of dating a woman for the first time after having only dated men up to that point. And of course, this delightful pandemic we all find ourselves in is another major change, to be sure, bringing with it unemployment for many freelancers. Being used to major transitions does not necessarily make them any easier though. Heather has a lovely chat with Lana about these life experiences, seeing what the pandemic has been like for her relatives in Russia, why Mexico City is more progressive than Los Angeles, and what on earth it means to describe a piece of art as “lesbianistic”. Black lives matter. Three words: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. If you like you can abbreviate it to PCOS, but either way, let’s talk about it. Heather’s guest on this episode is Lianna LaBerge (@unsolicitedstyleadvice). She was diagnosed with PCOS five years ago. Upon learning this she felt relief, that there was some explanation for experiences she had dealt with for years. PCOS is an imbalance of hormones that causes cysts to grow on the ovaries. And it affects 1 in 10 people with ovaries, also known as ovarian humans. Maybe we just came up with that in this episode. One of the symptoms Lianna discusses with Heather is period irregularity, prompting them to compare first period stories. Another symptom is body hair that can grow where you might not ordinarily find it. You can imagine the effect that this kind of relationship with her body had on Lianna while growing up. Also in this episode, Lianna shares a piece she wrote about her anxiety. What you’re feeling is real. And also you. You are real. Thank you very much to Lianna for sharing with us. Black lives matter. Let’s take a bird’s eye view. This episode is a conversation Heather had with Elena Muslar. A few weeks ago, Elena wrote an automatic out of office email reply, stating she would be taking the day off to “rest and recharge from the extra work [she] continue[s] to put in as a Black employee … trying to dismantle issues of systemic racism from within the walls of a predominantly white institution.” At the same time, she blocked off the entire day of Juneteenth in her work calendar, a virtual calendar that co-workers had access to, and wrote that she would be required to use vacation time in order to take Juneteenth off. Why is this the case, she asked, when Juneteenth is the oldest celebration that commemorates the end of slavery in America, and should simply be a national holiday? During this conversation, Heather asks Elena about something that happened when they were co-workers five years ago. Instead, Elena invites Heather to unpack it herself. So. This week on TIFF Long Take, Geoff sits down with Vanessa Matsui, the creator and star of the web series 'Ghost BFF'. A dark comedy about depression, 'Ghost BFF' is yet another example of creators using the web series medium as an alternative to network or cable television. The show, which was recently greenlit for a second season, is distributed by WhoHaHa, a creative studio co-founded by Elizabeth Banks that celebrates and elevates women in comedy.   Matsui talks about how she came up with the concept for 'Ghost BFF', the advantages and disadvantages of the DIY model, and why she hopes her show will follow in the footsteps of other web series–turned–cable shows like 'High Maintenance', 'Insecure', and 'Broad City'.   She also discusses the economics of making a web series, how difficult it is to sell a show about mental health, and her creative collaboration with Elizabeth Banks and WhoHaHa.
