In 1994, Forrest Gump took the box-office by storm and became a staple of cable TV reruns in the following decades. Its feel good message about a simple man who lived life heart first struck a chord, but hidden inside a six minute montage was a grueling test of the human limits -- a 15,000 mile ultrarun across the US almost five times. In 2018, Rob Pope became the first to complete this superhuman run, and became fascinated with others who push their limits.   Listen to Rob talk with other superhuman folks on How To Be Superhuman Support comes from Kuat Racks  Oboz Terns Use code DIRTBAG to save 25% off your first order  Diaries+ Members-- Their support is powering the Diaries- thank you! MARCH EPISODES ADVENTURE: No Guidebook, No Google, No Clue: Togo, Wallis and Kyrgyzstan with Best-Selling Travel Author Brian Thacker We follow best-selling travel author Brian Thacker on a unique, mad-cap adventure to three of the remotest countries on Earth: Togo, East Africa; Wallis & Futuna, in the South Pacific; and the Central Asian mountains of Kyrgyzstan. Inspired by the intrepid spirit of explorers of old, Brian decided to tear up the guidebook, throw away the phone and turn up to a country knowing absolutely nothing about it in advance.  IMMERSION: Homecoming: Chief Joseph's Promise and the Flight of the Nez Perce We go on location to the traditional lands of the Nez Perce, in eastern Oregon, to uncover a piece of history unknown to most outsiders. In the late 19th century, the Wallowa Band of the Nez Perce tribe were driven from their homeland. 200 warriors, protecting hundreds more women and children, fought for five days against 520 US soldiers. Their leader, before surrendering, promised his people that one day they would come home. After nearly 200 years, his promise may just be starting to come true. BUCKET LIST: Whale Watching in Victoria, B.C. We go to the southern tip of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada for a bucket list adventure spotting humpback and orca whales. "That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run." - Forrest Gump I'm extremely excited to welcome Rob Pope, the real life Forrest Gump, to this week's show! Over the last few years, Rob has taken on the EPIC challenge of recreating Forrest Gump's famous run. Over 15,000 miles across the United States 5 times, he tested the limits of his own endurance and experienced the U.S. to the absolute fullest. Over his year and a half adventure he experienced highs and lows, received major support from strangers along the way, and ran through some of the most iconic places in the country. The human connections he made, along with the places he explored were life changing. Completing the challenge was absolutely unprecedented. Today's episode is all about this INCREDIBLE ADVENTURE. Rob shares how one of his last conversations with his mother about "Doing one thing that makes a difference in this world" inspired this challenge. He also chats about the adventures he had along the way, along with the obstacles he had to overcome (including a torn quadricep..yikes!). We also talk a lot about one of my favorite subjects....Tom Hanks! Please check out Rob's website. He would love your help supporting two excellent charities- Peace Direct and World Wildlife Fund. Today's guests are more than just bandmates. Friends since the first grade -- with matching tattoos to boot -- being founding members of the influential Kansas collective The Get Up Kids has taken Rob Pope and Jim Suptic (along with Matt Pryor and Rob's brother Ryan) to seemingly every corner of the world since their 1995 formation. This year marks the 25th anniversary of their breakthrough sophomore LP Something to Write Home About — an album layered in lovelorn distance and declarations of proving oneself. Back then, Jim and Rob say that getting the album out was a frustrating practice in learning who to trust; at the moment, currently on tour playing the album in full, the pair look at the release as a "coming-of-age" album, one that inspired and launched thousands of bands itself through its heroic melodies and relatable points of view. Recorded backstage at the legendary Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, Jim and Rob discuss the two-sided coin of nostalgia, what inspires them about each other, and why maple syrup isn't always a positive smell. The band's 2LP Something to Write Home About reissue, complete with demos and previously unheard material, is available now via digital platforms, and physically on September 20th. In spectacular fashion, Doc wraps up Season 4 of the podcast by talking to Rob Pope, the bloke from Liverpool who recreated Forrest Gump's 15,600-mile run back and forth across America. Rob, who is an author and the host of Red Bull's How to Be Superhuman podcast, shares some incredible stories from the run, including his interactions with Americans from all walks of life, his brushes with the law, how he fended off attacks from packs of stray dogs, his close your eyes and pray method of dealing with a charging moose, and the fuel behind any successful transcontinental run, donuts and beer. The self-proclaimed King of Donuts also includes a good discussion on the power of unadulterated ands, his lucky number 12, and why he chose cross country over rugby. Rob provides an exclamation point to an epic season! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/johnfreakinmuir/support

Leading a climb on a sea cliff outside Aberdeen, she fell as the last bit of secured protection came away. Three days later, she woke up in intensive care to the news she’d broken her neck and back, paralysing her from the waist down.In this episode, Rob Pope chats to Karen about her climbing accident and the achievements that followed it – from hand cycling across the Himalayas on a specially made tandem and spending a month in minus 30°C temperatures crossing Greenland on skies, to the highs and lows of Paralympic training, and a punishing schedule that took her to London and Rio...Karen also reveals how she was forced to confront her fears and past trauma head-on when she agreed to climb the revered and unforgiving sheer granite behemoth of El Capitan in Yosemite, California. Twenty metres up and petrified, Karen shares the mental process she used to overcome her fear and take control of her mind, as she physically took on the equivalent of 4,000 pull-ups to scale the kilometre-high sheer granite rock face.Listen to all episodes and discover more about How to Be Superhuman at http://redbull.com/superhuman

Gabriel Cordell became the first person to roll across the United States in a standard wheelchair - giving Rob Pope a lot to chat about with him as they shared tales of their incredible journeys travelling the width of North America.Supported by a team of volunteers, the 3,100-mile journey from California to New York took 100 days to complete, and saw Gabriel pushing his chair for an average of 30 miles a day.In the episode, Gabriel lays bare just how torturous this journey this really was, describing everything from the savage terrain he faced in Pennsylvania, as he rolled for 450 miles across the Appalachian Mountains (losing 15 pounds along the way), to the agonising shoulder pain he experienced as he reached mile 650, leaving him temporarily unable to roll his chair another metre. But, as he reveals to Rob in the episode, it was such a willingness to withstand pain that saw him reach the finish line in his hometown of West Hempstead – and something, he says, we are all capable of. The difference, he says, in somebody accomplishing something extraordinary or not, is simply about overcoming the 'threshold...'Gabriel also reveals the series of life events that later culminated in him seeking redemption through this Herculean physical and mental challenge – a journey that began 20 years previous when a car accident changed the course of his life forever.Listen to all episodes and discover more about How to Be Superhuman at http://redbull.com/superhuman

That's the equivalent of 90 marathons over everything from gritty tarmac to muddy moorland."By the end, the last two weeks, I was just a shell of a woman. I just wasn’t even there. I was going through all the motions but mentally I was gone..." reveals Anna, as she explains to Rob the mental toil she was feeling as she approached the London finish line -- having travelled all the way from the Shetland Islands. From how she coped mentally with such a long (and often painful) journey, to how her body also learned to adapt to the relentless stress and exposure, Anna gives an epic insight into the workings of her mind and body as she pushed them to their limits.Anna also reveals what went into preparing for the challenge – namely, the one-and-a-half years she spent learning to run barefoot – as well as her motivations for doing it. And she reveals some of the unforgettable moments and encounters she had along the way that made all the hard graft worthwhile -- including one particular 24-mile run that she enjoyed with one giant, and very inspirational, lobster...Read more about Anna and her adventure at https://win.gs/BarefootBritainListen to all episodes and discover more about How to Be Superhuman at http://redbull.com/superhuman

Ultra Talk by Arnaud Manzanini
