In this week's episode, Dr. Rob shares a webinar he did about addiction, relationship healing, low-self esteem, the power of denial, and so much more. As addicts, we become so disintegrated in our everyday lives. We do not believe our loved ones when they say they love us. We do everything in our power to push love away because we feel we do not deserve it. There's a lot of internal shame that we face. Dr. Rob talks about how you can begin to live a life of integrity and value, and connection with your loved ones. It is possible! You just have got to take it step by step. TAKEAWAYS: [2:45] What Rob is about to talk about is not therapy. It's supplemental therapy. [3:55] Rob started doing this work when he was 26 years old. [4:55] Get a piece of pen and paper folks. You'll be writing some notes down! [5:25] DENIAL: Don't Even Know I Am Lying. [7:15] Here's why denial is powerful to our survival. [12:25] Why is the word ‘integrity' so important? [13:40] In our addictions, we are disintegrated. [14:00] Addicts already have low-self esteem and hold a lot of shame. [14:50] What is the definition of intimacy? It's not sex. [16:10] What breaks your partner's heart is that they can't trust you anymore. [20:10] Of course your spouse would be the last to know! They love you! They trust you! And now that trust is broken. [22:10] Spouses are looking through your phone to find that they can trust you again. [23:35] Rob wants you to write out the words ‘Addict' and ‘Healthy Person'. [26:25] Healthy people choose reality. Addicts choose to live in fantasy. [28:40] You're living in denial if you believe that your actions won't affect others. Discovering what are we really trying to do here and trying to think through in a thoughtful way is something that designers do really well. And I really enjoy that part of the practice.”(16:25) “I really couldn’t really see how you could make this business work if you’re just growing leafy greens and selling them in a supermarket.” (21:21) “The idea was to just test things out really small. Can we grow stuff that tastes good? Can we get people excited about that flavor? Can we sell it for a price that might possibly mean we make money? Can we deliver it? That sort of stuff.”(24:49) “All chefs have different tastes. But, the people who are operating with the highest standards are desperate for good, reliable ingredients. It’s their Holy Grail.”(26:49) “We try to support businesses of color. We try to support underrepresented groups. And we try to support good social impact causes.”(46:26) Links Mentioned Farm. One Website Farm. One Instagram Rob’s LinkedIn

Rob Schulz is the founder and President of Schulz Wealth. He grew up in a small, Central Texas town and attended The University of Texas. In 1990, in the span of only six months, he got married, graduated with his accounting degree, was commissioned as a naval officer, and subsequently lost my dad to a sudden heart attack. Rob grew up quickly that year. Over the next four years, he lived in Newport, RI, Virginia Beach, VA, and Charleston, SC while he served as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard the USS John Rodgers, a Spruance class destroyer. Rob loved his job but found it difficult to balance sea duty with home life, so he resigned his commission in 1994 and moved back to Texas. Rob knew what he wanted to do, but didn’t know how to do it, so he took a commission job with a financial services firm – The Principal Financial Group. He learned a lot from some really great people at Principal, but after a few years, he decided to launch into an independent firm called First Texas Financial Services with four other partners. It was during this transition that he achieved his Certified Financial Planner designation. At First Texas, they specialized in businesses and their owners. We were a one-stop shop for insurance, benefits, 401(K), and investments, so he found himself wearing many hats. What Rob really loves and enjoy doing is financial planning and asset management. With this in mind, he sold a big chunk of his business and launched Schulz Wealth on his own in 2014. Now he is able to focus solely on my true calling. Listen to this informative Grow Your Business and Grow Your Wealth podcast episode with Rob Schulz about financial planning and wealth management. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week’s show: ● Why having a financial plan is incredibly important for everyone. ● How a good team is vital to the success of any business. ● How there can be a lot of stress in the initial parts of financial planning. ● Why meeting quarterly is too often, and meeting yearly is not enough. ● How it’s important to teach your kids the do’s and don’ts of financial services. Rob Chevez is the CEO of The CASA Companies, a real estate and property management firm based in Reston, Virginia. The son of a Foreign Service Officer, Rob moved 11 times across seven countries before the age of 17. This unique experience gave him an equal appreciation of different cultures and people and the importance of a healthy family unit. By the time he graduated from Washington DC’s American University with a degree in Psychology, he had already formed a passion for real estate by purchasing his first home and renting the rooms to his fellow grad students. In 2005 Rob and his wife Kim started the CAZA group to buy and flip houses. By 2018 the company had sold 118 million dollars in real estate and is currently ranked in the top 1% of teams in the Keller Williams Realty. Rob lives in Reston, Virginia, with his wife Kim, daughter Isabella, and dog Prim. He loves Modern Architecture, Hot Sauce, Soup, being active, and connecting with the outdoors. Rob joins me today to discuss how growing up in a military family shaped his world view and how his parents gave varying degrees of structure and freedom that shaped his personality. He discusses his many location moves as a child, how sport and wrestling in school strengthened his skills in forging new friendships, and how a mix of philosophy and art conversation at the family dinner table felt like a blessing. Rob reveals how his desire to be the best athlete in his college days induced silent panic attacks to the point where he became so ill he had to reassess his lifestyle and mindset. He also shares a moment of personal crisis and what it took to get his relationship back on track and even better than before. “If you get the opportunity to test yourself at a level that you're like, you think you might die - that's where the juice lies.” - Rob Chevez Today on Mastering Midlife: How Rob found his way into real estate before he even left college How a need to win caused Rob’s health to suffer Why you need to listen to your body and adapt How appreciating simple pleasures is the secret to happiness Why failing can be used as a positive experience What Rob had to learn to save his relationship Resources Mentioned: Book: Psycho-Cybernetics Connect with Rob Chevez: The Caza Group Website Rob Chevez on LinkedIn Rob Chevez on Instagram Rob Chevez on Facebook Rob Chevez on Twitter Rob Chevez YouTube Are you a busy, overwhelmed business leader? Christian thinker and writer, Charles Malik once said, “I must be frank with you: the greatest danger confronting American evangelical Christianity is the danger of anti-intellectualism. The mind in its greatest and deepest reaches is not cared for enough.” On The Let's Get Real Podcast with Rob Lundberg, Rob presents Five Theses on Anti-intellectualism in the church that should have all of us evaluating whether or not the mind is invited into our worship. This episode is Part One of a multiple presentation on how anti-intellectualism has proved itself to be the trojan horse for dumbing down the Christian church over the last few decades. In this episode Mark interviews international bestselling and award winning science-fiction author Robert J. Sawyer about his latest novel release and the multiple ways he has split his IP (Intellectual Property) to optimize his income as a writer. Long-time listeners might remember Rob from Episode 4 (January 26, 2018) of the podcast, which focused on author branding. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes and a personal update. He also shares a word about this episode's sponsor. You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. During their conversation, Mark and Rob talk about: Rob's history as a writer, including his first short story published in 1980 and first novel published in 1990 The 3-way split rights on Rob's previous novel, Quantum Night (2 Publishers, and Rob self-publishing) What Rob learned from dipping his toe into indie publishing Quantum Night four years ago, and how he applied those learnings to the publication of The Oppenheimer Alternative The story about the title of his previous novel: Quantum Night VS The Zombie Philosopher The timing of Rob's latest novel with the 75th Anniversary of The Manhattan Project and the first use of Nuclear weapons in war The decisions Rob made for the print rights of his latest novel related to wanting solid bookstore distribution The split rights selling of the rights of Rob's novel, in print, to two different publishers in Canada and the United States Rob's control of the eBook rights, audiobook rights, film & TV rights The fact that Rob is still waiting on the "advance" payment from his Canadian publisher for a book that was released almost two months ago Rob's negotiation with his US publisher regarding the book's advance - and how that back and forth negotiation resulted in a situation where Rob maintained his eBook rights in lieu of an advance How it took two months of sales of the eBook (that Rob holds the rights to) in order to earn more than what the advance on the book would have been The direct involvement on the design of the book's cover, both for the edition Rob is publishing as well as the one published by his Canadian publisher The research involved in writing his latest novel, which included purchasing over 100 different books about the people behind The Manhattan Project How The Manhattan Project was the most secret project that humanity had taken on at that point in history and how it was almost the most recorded project - meaning there was plenty of recorded dialogue transcripts that Rob was able to use to write realistic dialogue (both word-for-word actual dialogue - about 20% of it was verbatim from transcripts - as well as for creating authentic dialogue of the scenes that Rob invented/imagined) The debate and origin of the terms sci-fi VS SF as short for Science Fiction How Rob likes to think of The Oppenheimer Alternative not as an alternative history novel, but as a Secret History Novel, and how the story is based on a string of events, evidence, and speculation about something else actually happening that hadn't been revealed or uncovered during that time period The importance of how writing this novel had to be a huge challenge that Rob looked forward to tackling The selling of the audiobook rights to Recorded Books The changes that happened in the lead up and launch of this book (and the planned book tour) due to Covid-19 Rob's use of Patreon for his most dedicated/passionate fans A new exclusive audio project that Rob is currently negotiating related to a radio drama style project (which brings him back to his roots as a former radio person) After the podcast Mark reflects on Rob's recognition of the power that he holds as the IP creator, and the many inventive ways he has split his rights. SUMMARY: The DYB Podcast is connecting with our mates Down Under as we bring you Rob Vuckovic, owner of Fusion Painting in Canberra, Australia! Rob shares many mindset changes he went through after starting his business, Fusion Painting. Like many of us, he learned painting from his father, but unlike many of us, his dad had him working from the age of 12 so that he would be persuaded to never paint, but to work hard in school and avoid manual labor and get an office job. Rob’s father taught him how to work hard and he excelled. Rob became a mechanical engineer only to hate it and want nothing more than to be out painting. Rob then worked for his dad until his dad recommended he start his own company, which Rob willingly and excitedly did. Feeling like he couldn’t fail, he took on what he thought was the best job and best market for him on millionaires lane—only to find it was nightmare lane. After losing $27,000 on that job, receiving no referrals, and not even being remembered by the home owner, he went to work for many GC’s. Having an awful time with them, his amazing paint rep help him and told him he should break into the residential market (avoiding the Big House on the Hill clients from then on!). This was one of many mindset changes or mind-shifts Rob went through and he shares them with us today. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: Many mindset changes for Rob that we can, no doubt, relate to, including: from painter to business man How Rob curates his culture amongst his team How Rob pre-sells so that the estimate is almost sold before he gets there What Rob does to focus on the customer experience, leading to Endless Referrals, as Bob Burg taught him The importance of following up and how his mindset changed from dreading it, to feeling helpful in doing so How Rob takes lessons from Jacko Willink's on Extreme Ownership and applies them to his company Rob's mindset change from Superman Complex to Delegator and how that builds up his team and morale in his company QUOTES: 09:14 "After a little while, I was able to join a group and learn about the business side of painting. That was the thing that was a real mind shift: learning about knowing your numbers, understanding a profit and loss, understanding how to track jobs and learn costs and things like that, learn how to read a balance sheet, print out a profit and loss statement at the end of every month and read it and study it and understand it. That was really the shift, the transition from a craftsman painter into a businessman." 12:05 "I think it was Richard Branson who said, "Look after your staff and they'll look after your customers." And really, really the team is everything to our business and it should be to everyone else's business. They are really the engine room of the business. You know, I go out and sell a job and do all that and generate leads and stuff, but really, at the end of the day, if you can't produce a job, you're not gonna make any money. So these guys are out there, they're at the coalface, really producing the job. They are the ones who are interacting with our customers day to day, they are the face of your business. They're the guys that have got the branding on the tee shirts, branding on the vans. They are really everything in a business, you know, without them, we don't have a business really. ... Really that is so important to me that's where the company culture has to come into it. So it's strong, it's a very strong thing. And I've always, always, always valued that." 12:58 "(Following Up) This is something you read about in books, back when I started, many years ago: follow up, follow up, follow up. It was something that I was resistant to do. I could have given you 20 reasons why. I didn't want to do it. It was only when I had people come over and bid to do things around my own home. And the guys that followed up, it really, really left an impression on me. And that was it. That was my mind shift. The way I felt when I got followed up, because I almost (used to feel) it was a bit cheesy or a bit almost like a used car salesman thing, but really, it's the way you do it. And these people will follow me up because they were genuinely interested in the job. It really left a great impression on me. And I tell you from that moment, I'm following up." What Rob likes about sitting in for me is it makes him think in a big picture way instead of stories. Key economic indicators are weirdly inverted, which is usually a bad sign. Massive amounts of stimulus means markets are rallying higher than pre-covid times, but mounting civil unrest makes you wonder what is enough to derail us. So far, the answer is “No”. Today Rob talks about his biggest issue with the market and what we can do to get over it. In this episode I spoke to Rob Pacey. Rob runs one of the most successful podcasts in Sport, the aptly named Pacey performance podcast, which focuses on strength and conditioning and training. He has curated close to 300 episodes since 2015 featuring some of the leading names in aspects of conditioning. In this discussion I was curious to find out what inspired Rob to begin recording episodes, and how he took the plunge. What Rob didn't have at the time was a reputation to lean upon, he just went for it, with an infectious spirit summed up in the phrase, “Well I could do that”, or at least I could try. That optimistic spirit shines through about wanting to network, create connections, learn from people and contributing. In a cluttered world of online content we can learn from Rob's lessons of being consistent, showing up for people and ultimately creating something of value. While he didn't have a reputation when he first started, he does now! He shares tangible strategies for wealth building and achieving financial freedom at any age, and inspires those who think they may not have what it takes to get out and put a plan into action. Today, Rob joins the podcast to dive deep into how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected his new business, Associated Human Capital Management. We discuss the strategies the company is using to keep moving by working from home, the nuances of the Payroll Protection Program and how the country’s massive unemployment numbers are impacting his industry, and the unique challenges - financial and otherwise - that this crisis poses to business owners and families. KEY TAKEAWAYS How a lack of entrepreneurial spirit in his family inspired Rob to pursue his first business opportunities - and the novel strategy Rob used to get five job offers while working at a deli after finishing college. Why Rob’s entire management team followed him after the sale of his previous company to Associated Human Capital Management - and what he’s doing at this time to ensure that their client services aren’t disrupted. How Rob is talking his clients through their anxieties concerning their business - and what he’s doing to help his and his staff’s mindset right now. Why Rob is cautioning business owners taking PPP loans who think they’re simply taking free money to plan for worst case scenarios, rather than full forgiveness. What Rob learned from making dozens of in-person sales pitches every day - and what makes this trial by fire so valuable for any entrepreneur. Today’s episode (part I of II) is actually three talks in one show, featuring segments with Jeremy Frisch, Rob Assise, and Dr. Tommy John. In our current world situation, many have found themselves without our typical training structures. This can be anything from not having a team, or partners, to train with anymore, a lack of gym space, and a lack of a training equipment in general. It’s times like these that, although tough, can allow us to shave things down, to the essentials of how we are training, and perhaps more importantly, why we are training in the first place. Each of our guests have had one or multiple appearances on the show before and were those who have a unique perspective on getting to the core essentials of training and movement. Jeremy Frisch is a former NCAA D1 strength coach who is now the owner of Achieve Performance in Clinton, Massachusetts. He is a leader in youth training and play, as well as all-around performance coach who works with athletes of all levels. Jeremy not only coaches physical prep methods, but is also involved in team sport coaching on the youth level. Rob Assise is a teacher and track coach at Homewood-Flossmoor high school who has written some fantastic articles (How I Deal with the Restrictions of COVID-19 and One Man’s Dive Into Extreme Isometrics) on his use of “Extreme Isometrics” in his at-home workouts, a topic of which we went into detail on for today’s show. Dr. Tommy John is a chiropractor, author and performance coach who is no stranger to this show. Tommy has an awesome ability to blend health, training and big-picture ideas into a powerful message in our own performance. His workout, training style, and overall message is one that brings out our true power as human beings. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Timestamps and Main Points 3:45 Jeremy Frisch’s take on how COVID19 is bringing children back to a more natural mode of play, albeit in context of current restrictions 8:50 The difference between movement and exercise for children, and when they are mature enough to make that distinction 13:35 Jeremy’s own workouts, and what he does to train in his basement gym setup 21:40 What Rob’s workout is looking like with his own daily schedule 29:45 How using extreme ISO’s offers good benefits for endurance of speed and strength qualities to athletes 35:00 Tommy John’s workouts and how they haven’t really changed much since quarantines 45:45 The importance of cultivating a creative practice in coaching 54:00 The inner meaning behind why we train, and the distinction between playing and training Quotes “(kids) Riding bikes has been brought back from the ashes, which is nice to see” “I feel there is a silver lining, because of some of the things that are happening out in the world, we have to go back to what we were doing when we were kids” “While moving is great for kids, they don’t have the maturity to understand what exercise really is” “I felt like I could feel the (cycling of energy systems) in the last minute, or minute an a half of a lunge. It’s something you have to try and see” “I hated doing the 5 minute ISO lunge while I was doing it, but afterwards I felt completely at peace. I never regretted it afterwards” “(After doing 5 minute ISO lunges 11x a week) playing “old man basketball”, flat out, I just did not get tired. I was able to go as hard as I could, for pretty much the whole game” “My training has not changed much, but my miles in walking have” Dr. Tommy John “We’re all artists, whether it’s programming or bringing in information in a creative way” “I love walking because it’s an ever-changing environment, it’s outside… there’s different people, there’s different flowers, there’s different shades of light… it’s almost like a movi...

Rob has had a massive impact on my life, and has helped me think bigger, differently, and is someone that I truly value. This conversation is so great because, even though our friendship spans a decade, I still learned so much from him. Rob has stepped into his zone of genius and it’s been an incredible thing to watch– I just know you’re going to take away so much from this episode! Question Highlights: What are the pros and cons of having children later in life? What do you think has shaped you in your life? How do you handle dealing with past trauma? How did you get to where you are now from being in a chiropractic career? Why did you want to do this mastermind? How did you know you had to pivot? How did you support yourself? Are you more motivated by pain or pleasure? What do you believe you are on this earth for? Guest Bio: I have overcome my share of obstacles in order to architect the life of my dreams and uncover the key to lasting, meaningful success. Growing up in Queens (literally on the wrong side of the tracks), my early years were tumultuous, marked by hardship and violence. With home being a less-than-idyllic place, I clung to work and education as my ticket out of the bedroom I shared with three brothers, and the low-income reality of the life my parents couldn’t seem to escape. The minute I was old enough, I threw myself into any job I could get my hands on, from washing cars at filling stations, to washing hair in salons. In hindsight, the high-end neighborhood across the tracks (home to the doctors and lawyers) likely played an unconscious role in my decision to attend school to be a chiropractor. Post high school graduation, I moved to Atlanta to complete my training and never looked back. Over the next decade, I built a successful chiropractic practice, welcomed my first child, experienced the heartbreak of a challenging divorce, found healing and redemption when I met and married my wife, and read a book that changed my life and uncovered for me the world of lifestyle-entrepreneurship. That book was The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris. Having spent my entire life thus far in relentless hustle mode, I was ready for the PLAY HARD side of the hard work coin. My wife and I wanted to escape the grind and travel the world, so we did. In 2006 we launched our travel/lifestyle Blog ‘Jetset Life’ and my all or nothing tendencies showed up for the party. Predictably, poppin’ bottles on yachts grew old and I became aware that once again my life was out of balance and I felt disconnected and unfulfilled. THIS was the pivotal moment I decided to apply myself to mastering the counter-balance between the science of achievement and the art of fulfillment. From THIS, the Work Hard Play Hard podcast and mastermind was born. Earn Your Happy is a production of Crate Media

Gyi Tsakalakis & Kelly Street are joined this week by attorney Rob Schenk to discuss his firm's content marketing strategy and their use of data to understand their audience. Rob Schenk is an Atlanta trial lawyer representing families with loved ones who have been severely injured or killed in nursing homes. He is the co-host of the Nursing Home Abuse Podcast, a weekly program providing education on nursing home safety and accountability. Keywords, title tags, etc. are a great way to capture potential client questions- as long as you actually answer them! Know who your 'real' clients are and market to them. Marketing a specific practice area to become the 'expert' in your field. As Rob says, "The riches are in the niches!" Why video vs. just audio? More options for people to engage with the podcast. Marketing is a long-term strategy, so create the content and know you will have to build an audience. Thinking about starting a podcast? Decide if you have enough time to DIY or enough money to outsource the editing, guest outreach and more. What Rob uses for Podcast & Video recording: Canon VIXIA HF 200, Hale PR 40's, Beringer Mixer, Adobe Premiere Pro for editing Rob's trick for video editing? Place an item (he uses a blue flag) in a particular area and move it to another spot for your editor to catch. Then they will know where to spend time editing, instead of watching the entire video. Ethics of video podcasting? Add a disclaimer stating that you are not giving legal advice and to contact an attorney for legal advice. Do not reveal any client information, including names or specifics of their unique situation. Does Rob worry about the ethics beyond this? No. The benefits of his video outweigh the risks. Listen through to the very last minute for Rob's Las Vegas suggestions!

“I said, ‘No way am I running Western States! That’s 100 miles!’” — Rob Krar, Western States Endurance Run winner 2014 Rob Krar is one of the kings of ultra running. He was a middle-distance runner through college, but then threw his running shoes in the trash, insisting he was done with running forever. Famous last words: Though Rob did take a break from running (during which time he worked grueling 12-hour graveyard shifts as a pharmacist), he eventually returned to the sport in a big way — as an ultramarathoner. He has won the most prestigious and competitive ultras, including Western States, Leadville, Run Rabbit Run, and a handful of North Face Endurance Challenge races, to name just a few. Rob is also a vocal advocate for mental health, and on this episode he opens up about his struggles with depression. Rob lives in Flagstaff, AZ, with his wife and fellow ultra runner, Christina. It was a blast to sit down and talk with one of my best friends, fellow entrepreneur and podcaster, Rob Murgatroyd. He’s changed my life in more ways than one, but I’m most grateful for him and our friendship because he taught me how to incorporate more play into my life. Because what fun is being successful if you can’t enjoy it, right? Today Rob is sharing how he finds balance between work and play and why you’re doing yourself (and likely your business) a disservice by not finding it. He admits that it’s not always the easiest task, but if you focus on what you really want your life to look like and create the plans to go along with it, you’ll be well on your way. It’s my hope that this episode encourages and inspires YOU to get out there and PLAY hard! Question Highlights: What’s your favorite quote? What’s one of your superpowers? What’s one thing you’re afraid of? What’s one of your favorite accomplishments? How does giving continue to drive you? How do you balance your chiropractic business, podcast and travel? What is the first step for people to help them see there’s a light at the end of the tunnel? What do you find when you ask entrepreneurs about where they find their play and balance? How has tribe influenced your level of play? Why is it so imperative that we make time for play when we are so driven and successful? What’s another example of a hard-driving entrepreneur that you’ve had a major influence on to play more and how has it influenced their business? Who’s the perfect candidate for your new mastermind? In This Episode We Talk about: Why Rob felt compelled to fund a baby’s heart surgery Why Rob is so passionate about traveling The balance between work and play Creating plans around what you want your life to look like Why the lives of high-level entrepreneurs are out of balance How Rob has influenced Chris and Lori’s views on play Getting out of our comfort zones What Rob’s “envelope goal activity” is all about Why masterminds work Rob’s new and different mastermind that mixes business and play And so much more… Rob’s Thoughts… “You are so much more than your business.” “Once you change your physical environment, you come back refreshed with new ways of thinking.” “There’s nothing spiritual about a bread line.” -- I have overcome my share of obstacles in order to architect the life of my dreams and uncover the key to lasting, meaningful success. The minute I was old enough, I threw myself into any job I could get my hands on, from washing cars at filling stations to washing hair in salons. In hindsight, the high-end neighborhood across the tracks (home to the doctors and lawyers) likely played an unconscious role in my decision to attend school to be a chiropractor. Post high school graduation, I moved to Atlanta to complete my training and never looked back. Over the next decade I built a successful chiropractic practice, welcomed my first child, experienced the heartbreak of a challenging divorce, found healing and redemption when I met and married my wife, and read a book that changed my life and uncovered for me the world of lifestyle-entrepreneurship. From THIS, the Work Hard, Play Hard podcast is born. I’m excited to share this second special episode this month of the Mother’s Quest Podcast, in honor of Father’s Day, with someone I’ve known and admired for over a decade through our connection at Alternatives in Action, California Assemblymember Rob Bonta. This month of June has been a time to focus on the amazing fathers in our lives. It’s also been primary election month in many communities. And when I thought about who I could interview who is both an amazing father and committed to a life of public service, Rob immediately came to mind. When we pressed record on this interview, Rob had just been elected for a fourth term to the California State Assembly’s 18th District, where he represents the cities of Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro and became, in 2012, the first Filipino American legislator in the 165-year history of California. Prior to this, Rob utilized his law degree from Yale to serve as Deputy City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco, and served as the Chair of the City of Alameda’s Economic Development Commission and as board president for the Social Service Human Relations before becoming Vice Mayor of the City of Alameda, the position he held as he ran for the State Assembly. We started our conversation reflecting on Rob’s childhood and how his father, who stood with Dr. Martin Luther King in the Civil Rights Movement, and his mother, a long-time leader in the Filipino social justice movement, taught him to understand injustice and the importance of joining the struggle to empower vulnerable communities. We reflect on some E.P.I.C. snapshot moments from Rob’s childhood. Growing up in a trailer just a few hundred yards from César Chávez’s home, Rob watched closely as his parents organized Filipino and Mexican American farm workers, infusing his formative years with first-hand experience of one of the greatest peaceful social, racial, and economic justice movements of all time. Then, we delve into how the E.P.I.C. guideposts show up in Rob’s life, how he makes space for each of his four children and allows them to step into leadership and activism on their own, his passionate and purposeful work and the causes he’s championing as an Assemblyman, from early childhood education to affordable housing, the deep connection to his community that fulfills and restores him, and the family relationships that are everything to him, especially the one with his wife Mialisa, who he met in college and has been married to for 21 years. We also had the opportunity to talk about AB-931 and SB-1421, two bills aimed at reducing instances of police brutality and increasing police accountability. Moving through some discomfort I felt in the moment, I asked and Rob agreed to work toward getting these bills passed, to talk with the founders of Mothers Against Police Brutality for policy insight, and to explore bringing a powerful play called (M)others to Sacramento to shine light on the real stories of families who’ve lost loved ones to police violence. At the end, Rob challenged me and all of us to hold him and other lawmakers accountable to the issues and causes that matter most to us. In a heart-wrenching week when our government has been separating children from their families at the border, Rob’s message and call to action to hold our leaders accountable resonates deeply. I left the conversation with renewed commitment to do so, modeling engagement, not apathy, for my children and saying “yes” to creating my own family’s legacy of activism and leadership. How Rob’s parents fled the Philippines for the security of the family before the Martial Law era of Ferdinand Marcos The way that Rob and his wife, Mialisa, make time for each child and share with their kids what they love and care The many causes Rob is championing in his role as Assemblymember. Rob’s position on the gravity of solving the problem of police violence in our country, an exploration of two new California bills aimed at reducing police violence, and the requests I made of Rob to go further in his commitment. How being in his home community restores and fulfills Rob and how his love of soccer, since the days that he served as captain of Yale’s Soccer team, continues to be a way that Rob invests in his own well-being. Rob and Mialisa’s love story, how they continue staying together, and the extended family that supports them Rob’s awareness that this interview provided an opportunity to “Get off of the dance floor and onto the balcony” to survey the big picture and reflect What Rob really thinks is the enemy of democracy and his challenge for all of us This Week’s Challenge: Rob believes that the enemy of strong communities and Democracy is apathy. He challenges us to step up and hold him and our other leaders accountable, even through discomfort, to the issues and things that we value and are passionate about. The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk Episode 254: Robert Kurson - How To Be A Master Storyteller: Rocket Men, The Most Daring Mission In NASA History Robert Kurson is an American author, best known for his 2004 bestselling book, Shadow Divers, the true story of two Americans who discovered a World War II German U-boat sunk 60 miles off the coast of New Jersey. Kurson began his career as an attorney, graduating from Harvard Law School, and practicing real estate law. Kurson’s professional writing career began at the Chicago Sun-Times, where he started as a data entry clerk and soon gained a full-time features writing job. In 2000, Esquire published “My Favorite Teacher,” his first magazine story, which became a finalist for a National Magazine Award. He moved from the Sun-Times to Chicago Magazine, then to Esquire, where he won a National Magazine Award and was a contributing editor for years. His stories have appeared in Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, and other publications. His latest book is titled, Rocket Men: The Daring Odyssey of Apollo 8 and the Astronauts Who Made Man's First Journey to the Moon. Show Notes: How Rob quickly realized going to Harvard Law School was a mistake "The people who liked being at Harvard Law School are the people I liked the least." Following that, he got a job at a large law firm in Chicago -- "Made a lot of money, bought a BMW, a stereo, a bicycle... And I was miserable" The big corporations/large law firms "punished creative thinking" Writing... "It all started with a basic curiosity that would grow into love." --> "You can't hate what you do and be happy" The theme of writing stories -- "Freedom... Being unbound. When I was writing stories, the time would go so fast." "Whatever it cost me, I was going to get out of practicing law, and be a writer." "I begged for any job. I'm incredibly persistent. I came in on the weekends and took high school football scores as my first job working for a newspaper as a writer" How can others follow their love/passion? "Never give up, do it at night, weekends, refuse to take no for an answer." "I was unwilling to see my life go that way. I would never stop trying, no matter what. There was no choice, that's what I was going to do." Key ingredients to being a great story teller? Understand the structure, the arc, the format: inciting incident, challenge, the heroes journey, the battles --> The beginning, middle, and end How the long car rides with his dad gave him a prime example for story telling -- "My dad was a travelling salesman and he would often take me with him. He's the greatest story teller I've ever known" Why write about the Apollo 8 mission? -- "They are the first 3 men to leave earth and go to the moon. The people at NASA say Apollo 8 was the most daring mission of all time. They orbited the moon 10 times. It was the most rushed mission in history." They needed to beat the Soviets and rushed it because of that and President JFK George Lowe - The NASA manager had the idea to go without the lunar module The 3 astronauts refused to give up. No matter what happens, they wont' give up. Most of the astronauts were fighter pilots in the war. They developed a psychology that "it won't happen to me." They were fearless. They had self-delusion and irrational confidence. That fueled them. They were not afraid to fail and had already failed many times in their lives Neil Armstrong crashed on a test flight... Just an hour later, he was seen in his office doing paperwork as if nothing happened. The best astronauts were not phased What Rob enjoyed most -- Meeting each of the 3 astronauts. All 3 are alive and still married (rare in the astronaut program). They are down to earth, humble leaders Rob describes what it was like flying with Frank Borman What it was like watching Apollo 13 with Jim Lovell (who was also on Apollo 8) The power of constraints -- "Deadlines can help us do incredible things. Construct them for yourself." Rob's routine -- At desk by 6:00 am and work until 2:00. "After that, my work isn't very good." Structure it first, organize, and storyboard it Take a lot of walks with a digital recorder and speak the story out Rocket Men has been optioned by Netflix "Deadlines can help us do incredible things. Construct them for yourself." Welcome back to another episode of DrumGAB podcast. So in this episode, we wrap up the Sweet Spot Invasion Trilogy with Robert Michl, owner, and operator of Sweet Spot Clutches. This is actually not the first time that I have interviewed Rob. In fact, it is not even my second time. I have spoken to Rob on three separate occasions, including this interview. So, how is it that I have spoken to Rob so many times? Well, even though this marks episode thirteen, back last summer I tried to do a podcast and Rob was a guest. I did a total of six episodes in the summer of 2016 but I had them taken down this past fall and decided to reboot the podcast. So, that still doesn’t explain three times….it explains two of em’, but not three. So back when DrumGAB first started, I was using a service called Spreaker (I explain this little story in the gag reel) and it sucked. I had to pay for it, I had to save every 30 minutes and if I forgot to save….I would lose it. So, I would imagine you are beginning to realize where that third interview comes into play. I still remember the moment when I realized that I would have to call Rob and tell him that I needed to redo part of the interview. Anyways, long story short, we did an interview last summer. But lemme tell you something, that interview would not hold a candle to this one. It is a much more developed company now, even in short time things have changed considerably and DrumGAB is beginning to turn into a much more developed podcast as well. The results of this interview are fantastic. We begin by talking about the humble beginnings of Sweet Spot and how Rob was finding it tiresome dealing with the industry norm for hi-hat clutches and decided to make a difference about it and make his own. He had a lathe and knew what to do with it and the rest they say is history. One person tells another person and next thing you know Rob can’t keep up with making them himself and turns to a more serious manufacturing process. Even though Rob is always thinking about what will be next in his line up of goodies, he also has some people that chip in too. We get to hear the story about how his lightsaber clutch came to be, how sometimes mistakes are are a good thing (the story behind the rat rod finish) and Rob even leaks his most diverse project yet!! The big picture with Rob is to diversify without straying too far from what he originally set out to do. He wants to be at the top of the food chain for the style of hardware he produces and I think that he has done just that. Before I saw Sweet Spot, clutches and cymbal toppers were kind of all the same more or less. Some are definitely worse than others, but from a 50/50 shot, you can’t really tell much difference. What Rob has done is create something completely new and he has innovated more than once on these rather simple concepts. Between his wear sleeve that he provides with each clutch or the Fuzion clutch that can be altered with an adapter to put a splash or effects cymbal on top of your hi hats, there are many new ways to implement cymbal hardware into your existing setup. Plus, Sweet Spot really blings up your drums, which helps you stand apart from other people. All in all, I really like Rob and what he makes for the drumming community. He is a solid dude that is willing to help wherever he can and it is very much appreciated by all of us. Instagram | @sweet_spot_clutches Facebook | @SweetSpotClutches www.sweetspotclutches.com

This was a great conversation I had with the wonderful Rob Dial. Rob is someone who found huge levels of financial success at a young age, growing several multi-million dollar businesses in his 20s. But he's also been hugely dedicated to his own personal growth from a young age, something he also helps many others with now through his MWF Motivation podcast. So I really wanted to get into Rob's head and find out what makes him tick. I wanted to know the mindset, the behaviours and the sheer way of being that enabled Rob to find that combination of financial success and happiness at such a young age. And that's what we talked about in today's podcast. In The Episode, We Talk About... How Rob dropped out of college and start helping to grow multi-million dollar businesses. How to extract passion and purpose from a seemingly 'bland' job or industry. Why getting a coach at the age of 19 was the best thing Rob ever did. The power of journaling, and how to get into it if you're struggling to make it a habit. Rob's key habits of successful people. How to set goals like a pro and make sure you achieve them. The power of seeing your life as a way to pursue personal growth. What Rob learned about life from having dinner with a billionaire. How being competitive with yourself is a key to success and happiness. Here at BrilliantLivingHQ.com we love thinking and talking about how our thoughts impact our lives. How what we think makes a difference to what we do, which is where the concept of mind management comes in. When we realise we don’t have to be defined and confined by the way we think, because they’re just thoughts and we are more than our thoughts, we can do something about it to make changes and get the life we want. We call it managing your mind. Our guest for today, Rob Cubbon, calls it ‘freeing your thoughts’ and he’s done just that. So we just had to talk to him and now bring you the conversation in this week’s episode of the Changeability Podcast Rob Cubbon is an Amazon bestselling author, online teacher, graphic designer, digital nomad and all-round good guy! Rob helps and inspires people to build sustainable online businesses, earn passive income and experience greater freedom and happiness in their lives. “We are all born free. We are all freer than we think we are. But sometimes when you get up for work in the morning, freedom seems like a privilege reserved for the rich and famous…It isn’t.” Rob Cubbon Rob’s also the author of ‘Free your Thoughts: How I Re-programmed Myself For Happiness And How You Can Too’, his latest Amazon bestseller about the mindset shift he enjoyed which enabled him to sort out his life and start his own business, find his own calling and happiness. “If there’s one thing I want you to know, it’s this: you can do it. What was at the beginning of the mindset shift that saved me? The belief that I could improve my life by my own efforts and my own efforts alone.” Rob Cubbon Episode 58 The Changeability Podcast In episode 58 of the Changeability Podcast Rob talks about how he did this, sharing the good, the bad and the ugly, including: What Rob was up to in Crouch End, London in 2003 Why Rob thought he was unlucky The turning point that started Rob on his changed path What Derren Brown, a newspaper article and Buddhist monks taught him How he made the shift from his old beliefs to a new belief system Rob’s favourite technique for freeing your thoughts How Rob gave up smoking almost overnight How to overcome negative self-talk Rob’s favourite affirmations Where you stop and the world starts What life is like for Rob nowadays How you can do it - start to free your thoughts and re-program yourself for happiness “Mindset is more important than technical ability, more important than people skills, and more important than any other capability you may have or may gain in the future.” Rob Cubbon Links Rob’s book: Free Your Thoughts: How I Re-programmed Myself For Happiness And How You Can Too Rob’s website: RobCubbon.com Affirmations If you enjoyed this interview please send Rob a tweet to let him know at @RobCubbon
