How do you become a stage-presence monster if your whole gigging life has been about focusing on quality playing? Is it even worth it? How can you make the trip from here to there? These are the questions Adam and Dan focus on this week. Also PLEASE support Steve Witschel who remains hospitalized with Covid-19. He's meant a lot to all of us, and even though his immediate outlook is improving, it looks like it'll be a while before he's rocking Bourbon Street again. https://www.gofundme.com/f/Help-CBC-Founder-Musician-Steve-Fight-Covid

This is basically a mini album. I've been listening to old episodes and wanted all the tunes in Jackson's Celebrated Irish Tunes in one place. What do you think of the new fonts and background? The font is as close as I could find for Robert Bremner's font in his printed collection. But I'm not sure the History nerd-ness of Marble paper and eighteenth century font outweighs the readability of a Sans Serif font and white space. If you want to see any of these tunes they are all on NPU's website, or Cape Irish: http://www.capeirish.com/webabc/working/source.folders/jcit/jcit_table.html Please Consider supporting the Podcast by Joining the Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/wetootwaag Please take advantage of the Tune Collection tab: https://www.wetootwaag.com/tunesources Also Please take a minute to leave a review of the podcast! This week we're talking about HAIR! Specifically “Black Hair” and the layers and complexities that encompass living with hair that doesn't fit the imposed Euro-centric, idealistic standards of naturally silky, fine, straightness. The fact that nearly every Black or Brown person has had to endure some sort of “Hair Journey” in their life is a testament to how interwoven societal pressures and prejudices have been ingrained into our psyches. From hot combs and creamy crack, to embracing our natural hair patterns and grades, and incorporating protective styles so we can (safely) rock our 48 piece wigs - we're getting to the root of our Crowns and unpacking it all - one bundle at a time.#SoCanWeTalkAboutItDisclaimer: We had a VERY SPECIAL GUEST with us in the studio this week so please don't mind all the coos and gurgles and prepare for CUTENESS OVERLOAD as we welcomed Baby Aura to the show for the FIRST TIME on the OUTSIDE of Che's womb! Also: Please bear with us through this new production schedule, y'all! We be on here talking about upcoming events that be real upcoming when we're recording but then be real OVER by the time the episode drops

Leje jak z cebra!English Phonemes: “LEH-yeh yahk z TSEH-brah”Literal Translation: It pours like from bucket.Elegant Translation: It’s pouring like from a bucket.English Equivalent: It’s raining cats and dogs. This is a colloquialism very similar to the English equivalent. You use it the same way. When it’s really raining hard, you can imagine that it’s not far from a waterfall like stream you’d get from pouring water directly out of a bucket. So the next time you’re hanging out with a Polish-speaking friend or family member, and you get caught in an absolute deluge outside, you can delight them by busting this little number out :-)Leje = he/she/it pours [verb, 3rd p. s. present tense]Jak = like, how [depending on context]Z = from [preposition]Cebra = bucket, pail [noun, masc. obj. form]Also: Please note the pre-show announcement!! “How You Say?” will be taking a 2-month break because your illustrious host with the most is about to deliver a baby! The else block only executes when there is no break in the loop. If the loop got all the way to the end, and off the end, the else block will run. First, I’m not used to putting break or else anywhere in my Python code, so I’m also curious why you’d want to do this. Yang explains the feature, then talks about 3 scenarios for use: Iterate and find items without needing a flag variable. break when you find what you are looking for, and the else only runs if you didn’t find it. Help to break out of nested loops I’m still confused by this one Help to handle exceptions Kind of a cool use. try/except in a for loop. Have a break in the except block. Then the else block will be fore code where you know no exceptions were caught. Take away: The first reason wins it for me. I hate it when I feel I need to add a “found” flag to some code. else seems cleaner. Also: Please add comments to else blocks. Many people won’t know how they work, so a short explanation can help tons. Michael #2: Tortoise ORM Familiar asyncio ORM for python, built with relations in mind I’ve seen this ORM popping up around the async web stories a lot these days Similar to Django’s ORM Tortoise ORM is supported on CPython >= 3.7 for SQLite, MySQL and PostgreSQL. They offer a nice, broad perf comparison on their github page Really nice and clean API for ORM things, again on the github page Tortoise ORM uses Aerich as database migrations tool Cecil #3: Faster Python with Go Shared objects Leverage Go's standard library and ecosystem in Python Language interop is a good for productivity Passing data is limited to primitive types Brian #4: Learn by reading code: Python standard library design decisions explained (for advanced beginners) Reading code is a great way to improve your own coding. What code should you read? If it’s great code, you could improve. If it’s scary code, it might not be so good, and might teach you bad practices Python stdlib is there and has some interesting features: all of the code is available PEPs are available so you can read the discussions that went into it while you are reading the code, or before This is huge. Most code you’ll find, even within companies, doesn’t have “why we did this” explanations. However… it is not uniform different authors some is old, and pythonic was different 10-20 years ago lots of code around to preserve backwards compatibility So here’s some recommendations: statistics : code is simple, well documented, PEP has design decisions and comparisons pathlib: good object-oriented example, good comparative study, as you can also read os.path dataclasses: extremely well documented, good example of dataclasses graphlib: does one thing, an implementation of a topological sort algorithm. no PEP, but an issue with a discussion thread that discusses the API decisions Related: https://devops.com/learning-curve-computer-programming-languages/ Michael #5: Gradio: Create UIs for prototyping your machine learning model in 3 minutes via David Smit Quickly create customizable UI components around your models. Gradio makes it easy for you to "play around" with your model in your browser Drag-and-drop in your own images, pasting your own text, recording your own voice, etc. and seeing what the model outputs. Gradio is useful for: Creating demos of your machine learning code for clients / collaborators / users Getting feedback on model performance from users Debugging your model interactively during development Interfaces can be easily shared publicly by setting share=True in the launch() method. David was kind enough to share the music with me, you can hear his playing of it as a trio with his lovely low D Swayne Border Pipes: https://soundcloud.com/dave-rowlands-2/jim-hardings-waltz 1780s James Aird’s Mucking Geordies Byre (Also known as Tam Glen on same page as Lads wi the Kilts later in the episode) https://archive.org/stream/selectionofscotc00rugg#page/n59/mode/1up Duncan Johnstone: I thought I was playing this from Gordon Dunan’s Piping Centre recital series, but he doesn’t play Johnstone into Crossing the minch on that stellar album, so I’m not sure who I am poorly mimicking here. This is Duncan playing it on his album Thunderstruck though: https://youtu.be/P2QCkUtrN7g?t=111 1733: William Dixon’s Settings for William Dixon: Hey for Newbiggin, Stool of Repentance, Minuet: Edward the Second, Over the Dyke and Till Her Laddy, Are all from from Matt Seattle’s publication: https://www.mattseattle.scot/product-page/the-master-piper-new-edition 1780s James Aird: Lads wi the Kilts https://archive.org/stream/selectionofscotc00rugg#page/39/mode/1up Pre-1968 Billy Pigg’s Skye Crofters. I went looking for this tune because James MacDonald Reid played it at an early LPBS competition. He said he played as Pigg played it, avoiding all the excessive gracing, I’m sure I did not come close to emulating it, but I tried! Here is Billy Pigg playing it: https://youtu.be/XS7Iy8Ywlrc Matt Seattle kindly posted his transcription of this tune on the Northumbrian Piping Newsgroup Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/131491660229952/ It is also in the Book of Billy Pigg’s tunes, part 2 that was published by the Northumbrian Pipers Society, but I can’t find it for sale, but thanks to Julia Say for getting the information from her book, you can still buy part one on the Northumbrian Pipers Society website: https://www.northumbrianpipers.org.uk/product/billy-pigg-tunes-for-the-northumbrian-smallpipes/ 1880s David Glen’s Dr. Bett’s Super https://ceolsean.net/content/DGlen/Book12/Book12%2010.pdf 1734 David Young’s Border Reel. Season 5 Episode 4 Drummond Castle Manuscript Tunes: David Young’s Drummond Castle Manuscript: Athol Braes, Kiss’d Yestereen, New Bigging, The Malt Man, Kick the World Before You William Napier: Braes of Athol Neil Gow & Sons: Oh as I was Kiss’d Yestreen James Rook: Oh as I was Kiss’d Yestreen William Gunn: Oh How I was Kiss’d Yestreen Donald MacDonald: Kick the Rogues Out Elizabeth Ross: You Silly Fool Here is a link to the Gordon Mooney Article on Border/Lowland Pipe Revival I was referencing. https://oddscotland.com/lowland-and-border-pipers-society-history The Art for this episode comes from the Natinol Library of Scotland, by Susan Fletcher Crawford https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/22521/drummond-castle-perthshire David Young Wrote these settings for the Duke of Perth at Drummond Castle in 1734, I have used the copies available from Ross’s Music Page, all the tunes in this episode come from the first of two PDFs on Ross’s Music Page: https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/music/index.html The actual PDF download is the below link: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/musicfiles/manuscripts/drummond1.pdf First Tune from David Young is Braes of Atholl Decent information on David Young’s numerous other publications can be found here: https://www.altpibroch.com/y3/ Note that the tune also appears in John Walsh’s Country Dance books both English and Scottish according to Traditional Tune Archive, I could not find it there. It does appear with slight variations in Robert Bremner’s Scots Reels book from 1757: https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105003153 Also according to Traditional Tune Archive it is in William Vickers MS. Braes of Atholl from William Napier’s 1798 collection is quite different and fun for Uilleann Pipes: https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105015671 Bio on William Napier from HMS.Scot: Biographical info: Napier lived c.1740-1812, and died in London. He was a violinist both at Edinburgh's Canongate Theatre, and for Edinburgh Musical Society, before moving to London. (Alburger, 120; Macleod) He played in prestigious bands including the court of George III, and in middle life set up as publisher, later also starting a circulating library. Napier comissioned music from Haydn and was well-connected with other classical composers. (Grove; Baptie) (https://hms.scot/fiddle/source/201/) David Young: New Bigging. The Next Tune I play is New Bigging, likely named for the tune of Newbigging, in Angus. It sounds very familiar, but it also may just remind me of the mystery tune I play before it. Do you know what it is called? The Next tune I play from Drummond Castle is Kiss’d Yestereen. 18teens: Neil Gow & Sons: Oh How I was kiss’d Yestreen in the Second repository of The Dance Music of Scotland: https://imslp.org/wiki/Gow%27sRepositoryoftheDanceMusicofScotland(Gow%2C_Niel) 1840s: James Rook’s Manuscript: Oh How I was Kissed Yestereen: https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/musicfiles/rook/rook_pages/033.htm 1848: William Gunn: Oh How I was Kiss’d Yestreen, He calls it a quickstep, so I play it like I would a 6/8 march, then play it as written. https://ceolsean.net/content/Gunn/Gunn_TOC.html David Young: The Malt Man. This tune again also appears in Gow’s Repository and Rook’s Manuscript. 1828: Donald MacDonald’s Setting for Kick the Rogues Out: Can you recognize the funky gracing in the beginning? https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105683188 1812: Elizabeth Ross’s You Silly Fool or "Amedain ghórich" Elizabeth Ross’s Impressive collection from Raasay in 1812. We will certainly be talking about this collection in the future. You can download the impressive PDF here: https://www.ed.ac.uk/files/imports/fileManager/RossMS.pdf 1757: Robert Bremner (I didn’t play this setting but you can look at it here) https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105002691 1734: David Young: Kick the World Before You My First Album is out! This week, on Friday Night Movie: Shai went skiing, Becky is moving (The confusion! The chaos! The clutter!), and Lily’s kids are, well, generally confused about seasons. This is all before the movie starts playing, folks. The sibs dive into Christopher Nolan’s highly controversial (and yes, confusing, that’s a theme here at FNM today) movie Tenet. Shai somehow manages to explain the entire movie in just two minutes (whether it was comprehensive is debatable). And speaking of debates, a lively one ensues over whether it’s an overdone vanity piece, or the underrated soon-to-be cult classic of the new decade. In this free preview clip of the sixth and final episode of our deep dive Patreon series about the ECW on TNN saga, Kris and David take a look at ECW’s Canadian debut, which featured a major locker room speech from Paul Heyman. The speech and fallout result in discussion of a lot of themes that come up in the full episode, including Paul’s habit of claiming to have meetings with TV networks in Los Angeles in scenarios that are not exactly realistic. To hear the whole show, you need to become a Between The Sheets patron at the $5/month level or higher by going to Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets ( http://www.patreon.com/betweenthesheets ). Topics include further annoying USA Network speculation, ECW moving to running monthly pay-per-view shows, Barry Diller making it VERY VERY CLEAR in public that he wasn't replacing the WWF on USA with another wrestling show, Vince McMahon personally granting ECW a brief reprieve on TNN because reasons, reports of ECW talking with the producers of The Real World about some kind of partnership, a TV trade publication finally covering the ECW/USA rumors, ECW running very successful TNN tapings at the Hammerstein Ballroom and in the Toronto metro area, terrible reviews for the Anarchy Rulz video game, Super Crazy and Tajiri having visa issues, late pay, how MEETINGS DON'T WORK THAT WAY, discussions with other networks and possibly Universal Music Group, and MUCH more. This series has been our magnum opus of sorts and we hope you've all enjoyed it. Happy New Year! Thanks,------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PUBLISHED:12/9/20 DURATION: 48minutes BlazeTV has never been more vital to the protection of freedom of speech than now. There is a very dangerous misconception lurking on the Left and among the Big Tech elite that only “true” speech deserves protection as free speech. So Big Tech companies have appointed themselves the ultimate truth detectors. They want to hook every tweet, every Facebook post, every YouTube video up to their lie detector test machine. And if their algorithms detect anything that doesn’t align with their left-wing dogma, then it is "false" and can be labeled, censored, or deleted to protect you from thinking for yourself. Glenn reveals the fact-checking fascists' disturbing ties to China and how George Soros' fingerprints are all over Facebook's version of its own Supreme Court. Death by fact-checking is how Big Tech plans to kill free speech, but BLEXIT founder Candace Owens won't go down quietly. She joins to tell Glenn why she's suing Mark Zuckerberg and gives an update on her latest victory in the battle against Big Tech. Another day in the United States of Serfs and Lords. The Republicons have shown their true face as the democracy-hating, greed-centered death cult it is. No, we don't need to find "common ground" with "sane" Republicans. The Republican Party is irredeemable and must be relegated to history's trash pile.
