Islands Off Islands (Raasay and Iona) Scottish Island Adventures - Raasay - and Iona with hosts Coinneach Macleod, the Hebridean Baker, singer-songwriter Natalie Galloway, and guest Ailidh Lennon Raasay and Iona Raasay and Iona are islands off islands. Raasay is reachable by a 15 minute ferry from Sconser on Skye. The island is known for its whisky and is dominated by Dun Caan - a distinctive flat-topped mountain. The sacred island of Iona - despite its small size - draws in visitors from across the world because of its historical and spiritual significance. Iona is accessible by a foot passenger ferry from Fionnphort on Mull. Raasay Distillery The Isle of Raasay Distillery emerged from centuries of illicit whisky distilling. It now offers guided tours of the whisky making process, luxury overnight accommodation, and a chance to sample the signature Raasay single malt, while taking in rugged views of Skye across the water. Iona Abbey Iona Abbey is one of Scotland's most important spiritual sites. Established in AD 563 by St. Columba, the abbey was significant in the spreading of Christianity across the west of Scotland and has been a center for pilgrimage for centuries! It's alway nice when you can get the words of the Gaels themselves to describe their own culture. Here, I use an excerpt from The Everyday Life of the Clans of the Scottish Highlands, by Michael Newton, where a MacLeod of Raasay woman composed a lament for her brother in 1671. In it, she describes what he wore, which is enlightening but not what you'd expect. While on the Isle of Skye recently with my partner Stephen Marriott enjoying a bit of van-life freedom, we happened upon the inaugural Hebridean Whisky Trail Festival. Never known to say no to a dram now and again, I was fortunate enough to take part in a whisky tasting from the distilleries involved, and to have a chat with NEIL MATHIESON – CEO of the Isle of Skye's youngest distillery, Torabhaig. I also cajoled Steve to take ten minutes out of his time to reflect on our trip to the Isle of Raasay and its equally young distillery plus his overall impressions and thoughts on our trip to Scotland. Today we take a moment to sip on and review some newer whiskies to our market. http://www.whisky.de/p.php?id=RAASA0CR0 Nosing 03:43 Wir verkosten den Raasay Single Malt.
I have always been curious about what ‘community development' looked like in remote rural areas. I have met Alison on a number of times at different events over the years and found out more about Applecross each time.Alison's experience of raising a family in Applecross , finding work in Raasay and latterly coming back to Dumfries and Galloway was an interesting tale in the telling. On the way, we chat about how rural groups fix things, what the challenges are and the future of high streets; notably Midsteeple Quarter.
Season 5 Episode 4 Drummond Castle Manuscript Tunes: David Young’s Drummond Castle Manuscript: Athol Braes, Kiss’d Yestereen, New Bigging, The Malt Man, Kick the World Before You William Napier: Braes of Athol Neil Gow & Sons: Oh as I was Kiss’d Yestreen James Rook: Oh as I was Kiss’d Yestreen William Gunn: Oh How I was Kiss’d Yestreen Donald MacDonald: Kick the Rogues Out Elizabeth Ross: You Silly Fool Here is a link to the Gordon Mooney Article on Border/Lowland Pipe Revival I was referencing. https://oddscotland.com/lowland-and-border-pipers-society-history The Art for this episode comes from the Natinol Library of Scotland, by Susan Fletcher Crawford https://www.nationalgalleries.org/art-and-artists/22521/drummond-castle-perthshire David Young Wrote these settings for the Duke of Perth at Drummond Castle in 1734, I have used the copies available from Ross’s Music Page, all the tunes in this episode come from the first of two PDFs on Ross’s Music Page: https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/music/index.html The actual PDF download is the below link: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/musicfiles/manuscripts/drummond1.pdf First Tune from David Young is Braes of Atholl Decent information on David Young’s numerous other publications can be found here: https://www.altpibroch.com/y3/ Note that the tune also appears in John Walsh’s Country Dance books both English and Scottish according to Traditional Tune Archive, I could not find it there. It does appear with slight variations in Robert Bremner’s Scots Reels book from 1757: https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105003153 Also according to Traditional Tune Archive it is in William Vickers MS. Braes of Atholl from William Napier’s 1798 collection is quite different and fun for Uilleann Pipes: https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105015671 Bio on William Napier from HMS.Scot: Biographical info: Napier lived c.1740-1812, and died in London. He was a violinist both at Edinburgh's Canongate Theatre, and for Edinburgh Musical Society, before moving to London. (Alburger, 120; Macleod) He played in prestigious bands including the court of George III, and in middle life set up as publisher, later also starting a circulating library. Napier comissioned music from Haydn and was well-connected with other classical composers. (Grove; Baptie) (https://hms.scot/fiddle/source/201/) David Young: New Bigging. The Next Tune I play is New Bigging, likely named for the tune of Newbigging, in Angus. It sounds very familiar, but it also may just remind me of the mystery tune I play before it. Do you know what it is called? The Next tune I play from Drummond Castle is Kiss’d Yestereen. 18teens: Neil Gow & Sons: Oh How I was kiss’d Yestreen in the Second repository of The Dance Music of Scotland: https://imslp.org/wiki/Gow%27sRepositoryoftheDanceMusicofScotland(Gow%2C_Niel) 1840s: James Rook’s Manuscript: Oh How I was Kissed Yestereen: https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/musicfiles/rook/rook_pages/033.htm 1848: William Gunn: Oh How I was Kiss’d Yestreen, He calls it a quickstep, so I play it like I would a 6/8 march, then play it as written. https://ceolsean.net/content/Gunn/Gunn_TOC.html David Young: The Malt Man. This tune again also appears in Gow’s Repository and Rook’s Manuscript. 1828: Donald MacDonald’s Setting for Kick the Rogues Out: Can you recognize the funky gracing in the beginning? https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105683188 1812: Elizabeth Ross’s You Silly Fool or "Amedain ghórich" Elizabeth Ross’s Impressive collection from Raasay in 1812. We will certainly be talking about this collection in the future. You can download the impressive PDF here: https://www.ed.ac.uk/files/imports/fileManager/RossMS.pdf 1757: Robert Bremner (I didn’t play this setting but you can look at it here) https://digital.nls.uk/special-collections-of-printed-music/archive/105002691 1734: David Young: Kick the World Before You My First Album is out! Black Lives Matter Notes: Here are some good resources and places to donate funds to support the Black Lives Matter Protests: I found this website really helpful for figuring out how to help, and how to understand what defunding the police means, and why it is a good idea. https://www.mpd150.com/how-can-you-help-mpls-june-2020/ “The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality.” https://donate.splcenter.org/ The Minnesota Freedom Fund has received lots of donations and continually updates their website with good organizations to donate to: https://minnesotafreedomfund.org/ Also use this resource to find your representatives: https://myreps.datamade.us/ Call and tell them you hold them accountable for Racial injustice and ask them to demilitarize the police and commit to racial justice. If you are confused by calls to defund the police you can see some excellent explanations as to why Policing is not the answer. If you are uncomfortable with blanket statements that all cops are in league with or actively white supremacists it still makes sense to "defund" them. The generous read here is that we have asked police to do far too much, and we should minimize their responsibilities and train them far better to do far fewer things. If this seems absurd to you I encourage you to spend some time on this website: https://www.mpd150.com/faq/ Bagpipe Notes! Making whisky on the Isle of Raasay is a modern success story that is down to determination and hard work, but it's also bringing new life to an island that has seen more than its share of hardship in the past, as Richard Goslan discovers.
We're not sure who's more excited: Joshua and Jason getting to talk to Raasay Distillery's Master Distiller, Iain Robertson, or Iain talking to his favorite whisky podcast hosts, Joshua & Jason! Regardless, the conversation was broad and deep and no details were left out when it comes to the talk of fermentation, distillation, and Maturation at Raasay distillery. What makes Raasay different from the other 130+ distilleries in Scotland? Listen in and find out! So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song- Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo- RØDE for making *really* great microphones- Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers- Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices- Joshua Hatton for producing and editing
This episode features a feature on the Isle of Raasay distillery - a new distillery, only 1 year old, and based just off the Isle of Skye on the charming idyllic Raasay. The feature includes an interview with Isle of Raasay Distillery brand ambassador Chris Hoban
As Brand Ambassador for R&B Distillers, Chris Hoban has the enviable job of talking about whiskey night and day. His early years working at the Scotch Whiskey Experience, the famous whiskey tourist attraction in Edinburgh, paved the way. R&B are in the process of creating their first distillery on the island of Raasay just across from Skye, with another one to follow in the Borders. The owner’s great-grandfather had been a master blender in the early 19th Century. Finding his old recipe book was the impetus to establishing R&B Distillery. They’ve already blended two batches of their award-winning limited-edition Raasay While We Wait in preparation for the distillery to be up and running this summer. Where you can hear me drinking next: Next up on Best Sips, Jonathan Zammit-Tabona, Global Ambassador for Langley's No.8 Gin. They market it as being specifically targeted for the discerning & sophisticated male gin drinker. I’ll be asking Jonathan what that really means and how the women who drink it feel. Are you a regular listener of the Best Sips Worldwide podcast? You can get this and all future audio files automatically downloaded to your mobile device easy. Poet Kenneth Steven writes on Raasay, an island close to Skye once home to the great Gaelic bard Sorley MacLean. Kenneth describes the history of this 'fiercely traditional island', with its continuing belief in the sanctity of the Sabbath Day - Sunday. 'This was prevalent until recently all across the Highlands and islands; it has faded with increasing secularisation, but on Raasay (as in other Outer Hebridean islands in particular) it remains firm'.Kenneth looks at two famous sons of Raasay, bot born in 1911. Calum MacLeod is famous for building a road across the island when requests for its construction has fallen on deaf ears. 'Over a period of about ten years he constructed one and three quarter miles of road, using little more than a shovel, pick and wheelbarrow.'But his main interest is in the work of Sorley Maclean, Gaelic poet. 'Gaelic was his mother tongue; the language of the heart, and the poetry he wrote was out of the burning fires of the heart. This was no gentle poetry. Sorley Maclean's people were from Raasay and Skye and the memory of their struggle for justice and for land beat within him like a living drum.'Written and read by Kenneth StevenProducer Mark Rickards
Calum MacLeod lived on the North side of the small, rocky island of Raasay, Scotland—miles away from the nearest road. One night his 12-year-old daughter became stuck in a blizzard as she was trying to walk up to their isolated settlement from the roads on the south of the island. Calum rescued her, but was furious and petitioned the government to build a road. The far-off bureaucracies refused. So Calum decided to conquer the unforgiving landscape, and build the road himself. What followed was an astounding testament to one man's determination.
