A więc pierwsza część – A capella. Zamknijcie oczy. Audycja zawiera utwory: “Rivers of Babylon”, wyk. Harpist Eira Lynn Jones joins us to chat about her work with the Juniper Project, a flute and harp duo that performs and records not only the most virtuosic repertoire, but also the approachable repertoire that they enjoy coaching. We speak about Eira's work as a composer of chamber music, as well as her connection to the Music in Hospitals program. Eira shares some of her background as someone who “did everything backwards”, having gone from a full-time orchestral position to a freelancer's career. Welsh harpist EIRA LYNN JONES is a versatile musician, who has a passion for creativity and originality. Her eclectic career ranges from orchestral work, recordings and commissions to chamber music collaborations. She is known equally for her committed, dynamic playing and her innovative, dedicated teaching. While a student at the Royal Northern College of Music, Eira won numerous awards, including a Guinness Foundation Scholarship and an I.S.M. Performer Award, resulting in her BBC Radio 3 debut on the ‘Young Musicians' series. Further studies with Kathleen Bride at the Manhattan School of Music in New York led to a Masters Degree. Invited to join the Manhattan Contemporary Music Ensemble, she premiered new works for harp, which ignited her interest in researching unusual and varied repertoire. She did indeed take her harp to the party; to Carnegie Hall, the Aspen Music Festival, Banff Centre of Performing Arts and Creativity, and even to the top of the Empire State Building! On returning to the UK she was appointed Principal Harp with Northern Ballet Theatre. She now regularly freelances with the UK's leading orchestras, including Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Opera North, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and the Royal Northern Sinfonia. As soloist, she has performed Debussy Danses with Manchester Camerata and Ravel's Introduction and Allegro with Northern Chamber Orchestra. Eira is also widely recognised as one of the UK's leading harp teachers. As Head of Harp at the RNCM she loves inspiring young musicians, receiving many invitations to run workshops worldwide, including USA, Denmark, Greece, Ireland, Sweden and Iceland. She achieved notable success with her solo album ‘... from within', which is a mix of classical and folk pieces on both pedal harp and clarsach: "I love the album ... a diversity of music, a very accomplished technique, and your heart coming through" (Alan Stivell). From performing at the Hollywood Bowl to under the much loved “Dippy” dinosaur at the Natural History Museum; from appearing in Coronation Street to playing for HRH Prince of Wales in Spain; from recording with the heavy metal band “Venom” to accompanying Kiri te Kanawa; from directing the music of John Cage for 20 harps to leading the RNCM Young Harps Project, Eira approaches each project with passion, and is a true ambassador for this most magical of instruments. The transcript for this episode can be found here. For more information about Eira Lynn Jones, please visit her website, Facebook, and Twitter.

Martha grew up playing musical instruments from a young age, including receiving private piano lessons at the age of 5, and she always had a passion for making music. Influenced by dreams she was having and the love of harpist Alan Stivell, Martha purchased a harp at the age of 21 with the help of a few generous friends and embarked on what would become her future career. Although she studied Archaeology at Oxford College in her youth, she felt the calling to become a part of renaissance festivals and has since spent decades of her career delighting patrons with song.

www.moonoverthetrees.com/podcastwjharp.com“Things that we're doing now are going to be the tradition of tomorrow.”William Jackson is one of Scotland's most well respected and sought after performers and teachers of the Scottish harp. Billy's humor and graciousness are a constant as his fans from around the world will agree.Billy's musical journey started with classical piano at the age of 11 and when he became interested in traditional music he took up the mandolin. At 15 he started playing the double bass and bass guitar and joined the band Contraband in Glasgow.Who or what inspired you to play the harp? When Billy was in London he noticed a lever harp in the window of a store that piqued his interest. He had been listening to harpers Alan Stivell, Derek Bell, and Alison Kinnaird. He didn't buy that particular harp, but in 1975 he decided to sell his bass and buy a harp.He played harp, Uilleann Pipes and whistles with the band Ossian for fourteen years starting in 1976. A band that continues to inspire traditional musicians from around the world. Some refer to them as, “The Scottish Planxty”.Like any other instrument the harp is constantly being developed.“It's like a tree and it grows different branches.”Arranging tunes and playing the bouzoukiThe bouzouki has changed a lot. Tuning that's good for Scottish music. only been used in Irish and Scottish music since the 1960s. They work really well with traditional music. It uses open tuning. Like having a drone on the bagpipe with the melody over it. Dance music would not have been accompanied originally in traditional music. That whole sense of harmony has gone onto the harp. Often when playing dance music on the harp and in a lot of the old harp pieces as well, there is so much going on with the ornamentation and variations you actually don't have to do tons [with your accompaniment] anyway.” The melody often speaks for itself and the melody's always telling you what the harmony could be. Scottish tunes are hugely influenced by the Scottish Pipes. On Uilleann Pipes, you can actually block the chanter on your knee and close all the holes and you can actually make a silence, you can even switch the drones off. But, it's the melody that is the important thing. The drones can be continuous But the melody could have actual gaps or silences between the notes, so that's a different style. But, in the Scottish bagpipe to make the second note to make trebles and doubles, you have to use cuts and ornaments to make the rhythm because it's one long continuous sound there's no silence. So that is hugely influential in fiddle music and harp as well.A lot of the old harp music would have a simple melody and a whole series of variations. And that's kind of the form of the Scottish bagpipe, the Pibroch. You're always hugely influenced by every musician you've ever worked with.He is also a music therapist. We talked about how wonderful the harp is for sharing with others in therapy situations and how powerful music therapy can be. He is a multi instrumentalist who started his musical journey learning classical piano, then fiddle, and pipes, among other instruments. He also plays the bouzouki, an instrument in the lute family that is very popular in Greece. It gained popularity in Irish music in the 1960s where it has become a very common instrument to hear in Irish Sessions. Billy often tours and gives harp workshops with his wife, Grainne Hambly as The Masters of Celtic Harp. However during the Covid lockdowns of 2020 they are presenting concerts and workshops online.

moonoverthetrees.comwww.tristanlegovic.eu/My interview with Tristan was recorded on June 4th of 2020 via Zoom from his home in Brittany. Since then Tristan welcomed his daughter Lena into the world. Tristan also has a new album, Dañs, Historical and modern dances from here and there . You can purchase it from Tristan's website here: www.tristanlegovic.euWe chatted about how COVID has united the world and helps us appreciate the people we love and little things even more. People are turning to the arts more and more these days and are playing music, painting, writing more and more.Tristan is working on his PhD on the Breton harpist Kristen Nogues who was a contemporary of Alan Stivell. Alan Stivell was central to the revival of celtic music. In 1971 he released his famous album, “Renaissance of the Celtic Harp”, which is a must have for any fan of Celtic Music; and in 1972 he launched the celtic revival.Kristen Nogues chose a different path from Alan Stivell by mixing folk, traditional, and jazz in her music, which was very unusual in the 1980s In the 1980s. Kristen was a pioneer of the Camac electro harp and developed a very unique sound along with an interesting way of approaching music. She was a pioneer of the Camac electro-harp.When Tristan was sixteen he met Kristen Nogues. Much of her inspiration came from the space she kept in the music which gave musicians a chance to express themselves and share a unique spirit of the music, which was a huge influence on Tristan's playing.Through Nogues' variations, ornamentation, and improvisation she shared her take on the spirit of the music. Music is more than what is written down it's what you do with what is written down. It's about figuring out how it works. There is a link between jazz music and traditional music in these ways of variation, ornamentation, and improvisation.“We are in an open world.”What happens to our neighbors far away affects and influences us.Breton music has changed a lot through the influence of the world on its music. It's still Breton music, but there is a swing of a jazz influence. “The swing goes with the dance.”, as Tristan observes. The harp as an instrument has gone through a type of dance. As it changes and evolves the music being played has also changed. The newer harps can be tuned to A 442 instead of A 440 creating a brighter sound. The levers on the harp move smoother so changing keys is faster. Also the electro harp has influenced musicians and their playing.Development of the electric harp was inspired by musicians wanting to play on stage and be able to be heard. Musicians like Kristen Nogues, Alan Stivell and Deborah Henson conant. The harp makers saw an opportunity for something new on the market. They wanted to make a harp that people could play at home with headphones so they could practice without disturbing anyone. Or for group harp lessons so all the students could be practicing at the same time.Alan Stivell's idea of the electric harp was so his harp could be heard on stage when he played with the traditional Breton instruments, the Bombard and Binioù during the Breton Fest Noz. The electric harp is a very different instrument from the acoustic harp. The basic technique is the same, but the decay on the electric harp is much longer so the player has to control the note more, not unlike the technique used on a wire strung harp. The Fest NozTristan uses two harps when he plays at The Fest Noz, the electric and the electro-acoustic harp when on stage. He is always amplified when playing with his bass player and drummer. He also plays with Bombard and Binioù during the festival as well.Often when playing at a Fest Noz musicians know each other and collaborate and play. Much of the playing is very organic and spontaneous like musicians coming together at an Irish Session sharing tunes that are common in the Fest Noz community.Historically, each village had its own dance and you wouldn't dance another village's dance, but in the modern open world dances from other villages are shared. In Fes Noz everyone dances together, all ages sing and dance freeing the mind and being with others.UNESCO added Fest Noz dance to the world heritage list.“Our time is very unique because we have so many harp players and we can play in so many different ways we are much more creative, we see so many different ways to play”It is an exciting time in history with the new technological developments to the harp, but also have older recordings to look back on. There are many more harp players from which to draw inspiration.“It's about how does the music and dance make you feel?”“We need connection”On teachingTristan loves to teach the harp and Breton music and share the tradition. He is a regular instructor at The Somerset Folk Harp Festival which happens in Parsippany, NJ every July. (This past year the festival was presented virtually to great success.)“The thing [that a teacher does] is to keep that sparkle.”On the Irish composer Turlough O'Carolan“He is an open window onto the past”Collectif Arphttp://www.tristanlegovic.eu/blog.php?pennad=collectif-arpClotilde Trouillaud, Cristine Mérienne, Alice Soria-Cadoret and Nikolaz Cadoret.https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=4&v=ApLA7i7vERQ&feature=emb_logoTristan's bloghttp://www.tristanlegovic.eu/blog.phpThe revival of the celtic harp and the rise of its popularity. The development of the celtic harp around the world and the community of the harp.“It doesn't matter how old you are or where you're from. DISCUSSED ON THIS EPISODE: “Unsolved Mysteries Theme” composed by Gary Malkin and Michael Boyd “Halloween Theme” by John Carpenter “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd from Second Helping, 1973 “Yuve Yuve Yu” by The Hu, 2018 “Chylandyk” by Huun-Huur-Tu, 1997 “The One I’m Waiting For” by Relient K from MMHMM, 2004 “The Breton Kingdom / Rouantelezh Vreizh” by Alan Stivell from Before Landing, 1977 “American Pie” by Don Mclean from American Pie, 1971 “The Squeaky Wheel” by The Dear Hunter from Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise, 2015 “Be My Baby” as recorded by The Ronettes, 1963 “Janie Runaway” by Steely Dan from Two Against Nature, 2000 “Lingala” by the SF Jazz Collective from their self-titled 2005 album “Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk” by The New Pornographers from Together, 2010 “The Whistling Caruso” by Andrew Bird from The Muppets, 2011 OUTRO SOLOIST: Luke Price This episode's outro soloist is the wonderful Portland fiddle player Luke Price. When he's not working as a side man in a variety of killer bands, Luke joins his wife Rachael to form the excellent songwriting duo DEAN!. First off, thanks to Mickey O'Donnell and Michelle Doyle for doing their interview with approximately two hours advance notice. They don't hang about, those two. Please go here to support their osteoporosis awareness campaign: https://www.mickeymichelle.com/bone-health.html And so. The Harp. When I was at Uni my mates used to laugh at the fact that my passport had 'the Guinness symbol' on the front cover. I'd never really given it much thought up until then, the fact that the passport and the extra stout shared the same symbol. What was the actual mechanism by which the image of a harp ended up on the Irish passport, I wonder? Who decided? There must have been a committee. And given the tendency for committees to be agonizing and infuriating, and given the tendency for Irish republicans to disagree amongst themselves from time to time, I'm sure the decision wasn't arrived at easily. Come to think of it, humans in general have a great talent for separating themselves into different sects over pointless passions. I mean, I worked in a place once where there was a long running and spectacularly ill-tempered series of arguments about whether there should be an electric kettle in the new tearoom that people could switch on 'as and when' they need to make a cup of tea, or one of those giant shiny urns that keeps the water at a constant temperature of 3000 degrees so you can scald yourself instantly without having to wait for a minute and a half. So it'd be no surprise if deciding on the harp was a cause of angst in the early days of the Republic. I looked it up in these antique things I have in my house called reference books, like an intellectual might do. But there was nothing there so I googled it and found this piece from The Irish Post, written by Mary Louise O'Donnell: https://www.irishpost.com/life-style/history-irish-harp-symbol-ireland-57038 Giraldus Cambrensis how are ye! And then there's Turlough O'Carolan. He was blind, a traveling harper and composed a whole rake (I just realized I don't know how to spell that word right) of tunes that are really quite strange to my ear. They have a European feel to them in places, quite elaborately ornamented, and as I think about it now there were two of his tunes I learned to play early on: Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór (The Little Fairy Hill and The Big Fairy Hill) and Fanny Power (emphasis on the second word.) I mentioned Alan Stivell's 'Renaissance of the Celtic Harp' in our chat with Michelle and Mickey. It's one of those records that has the power to pull me back, in what feels like an almost physical experience, back to my youth. (I know, I know, I say that every week, but it's true, that really does happen to me every week, more than one time...it's a wonder I can get out of my scratcher at all some days...) Anyway, the image I have of that album is of a cover with some sort of seascape on the front, kind of ghostly and weirdly Celtic-y, even though at that time I had no idea what that was even about, and still don't really. There were only five tracks on it and one of them took up the whole of Side 2 and had pretty much every 'trad' instrument I'd ever heard of crammed into it, and several I hadn't. And there was another track called 'Ys' that had sea sounds and whistles and a sort of ambient feel to it. It was weird, man. I was introduced to that record by a radical priest who had arrived in our town. When I say radical, I mean he had long hair and a beard and a dog, and talked like a normal human being. And he told me there was this cool thing called General Absolution that meant you didn't have to actually go to confession, you could just have forgiveness bestowed upon you, kind of like having the holy water scattered on you at Easter but without you actually having to show up. He was great. He lent me Van Morrison's 'It's Too Late To Stop Now' (which I still have), 'Meddle' by Pink Floyd, Leonard Cohen's 'Songs From a Room' and loads of other music that was a lot more interesting to me at the time than the Celtic harp. And yet, true story, diving once again through the boundless depths of Spotify one day looking for stuff to send to Darren, what did I find but that very album. And when I listened to the first few seconds of 'Ys,' with the waves and the opening notes and the harmonics, I was, like I say, pulled back towards my youth. That album was released in 1971 and even today it sounds pretty out there. Even when you're not stoned out of your gourd. You should give it a listen sometime. On the way back from the interview with Mickey and Michelle, Darren and me were wondering how people so young have such confidence. Then we realized it's probably at least in part because they're ridiculously talented, and that's kind of lovely to witness. And truth be told, I think we were both a tiny wee bit jealous at the excitement and enthusiasm and joy they have for what's ahead of them - the music and the work and the travel. As a couple of cynics, we found it pretty inspiring. Michelle, Mickey, thanks for the chat, and for the chance to listen to you play. The festival takes place May 10-12, 2019 in Decatur, Texas. And this week, we're gonna highlight some of the amazing artists performing there this year as well as in past years. I want to give you a quick heads up. I decided to skip the podcast next week. Our official move in date for Atlanta is next week. While we will still be in Birmingham for the most part, we will be getting everything setup at our new home. And since May has five Thursdays, instead of the usual four, I figured it was just easier and less financially stressful for many of our Patrons of the Podcast who don't set a cap on their pledges. My husband and family and I have a ritual - we love listening to your podcast as we cook dinner. We talk about our days and enjoy your wonderful music! Simple but wonderful! Thank you! In any case, I was just listening to the current podcast, and you mentioned having a podcast devoted to the Celtic harp! I was thrilled. I've spent the last 20+ years studying the "clarsach" or 'Celtic harp - it is a passion. (I am actually a former president of the Scottish National Harp Society of America SHSA)). I wanted to offer some recommendations for some harpists that I've loved listening to over the years. There are so many great harpists - so this isn't a comprehensive list - just some that I feel are great because of their skill and talent as a performer, or because of their unique ability as a composer or arranger. First, I'd like to suggest someone named Cynthia Cathcart. (http://www.cynthiacathcart.com) She is a Scottish US National Champion and professional musician. She plays the clarsach - which is the wire-strung harp played with one's fingernails. She is a small niche artist (even in the harp world), so any of her music from the "Alchemy of a Rose" album should be easy to get permission to play. (She does a great version of Brian Boru's March with the didgeridoo!) I'd also like to suggest Ann Heymann - who, in my opinion, is the finest wire-strung harp player in the world. She is credited with re-inventing the wire strung technique based on extensive research of the Bunting manuscript (Irish harp source) and other sources. My favorite album is 'Queen of Harps'. Another premier Scottish artist is Alison Kinnaird, who is considered one of the leading performers and researchers of the Scottish harp - her book "Tree of Strings" is a must-have for anyone doing historical harp research. Other artists that are absolutely wonderful and renown in the Celtic harp world include Deborah Friou, Kim Robertson, Robin Huw Bowen (Welsh triple harp), Cheryl Ann Fulton, Máire Ní Chathasaigh, Patrick Ball, Laurie Rasmussen, and, of course, some of the original leaders in the Celtic harp world, such as Derek Bell and Alan Stivell. There are so many wonderful harpists that I could name! I hope you do consider doing this podcast. There are some great Celtic harp musicians out there that I know your listeners would welcome learning about. With respect for all the wonderful things you do!"

Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the virtual Public House for Celtic culture and change through music. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic Geek musician and your guide to a kinder, happier world.
