*TW: themes of child sexual abuse and infertility* How could a female teacher in her mid-thirties ever think it acceptable to sleep with her 12-year-old student? That's the question at the heart of provocative new film May December, starring Julianne Moore as said teacher, Gracie, who we find living married with the former student she raped, 20 years after the crime. The film - loosely inspired by a real case from the 90s - has received rave reviews, so we get into its many, very thorny ethical dilemmas. Then, more on age gaps and power dynamics in relationships as we debrief on how Nara Smith, the 22-year-old wife of the biggest male model in the world, Lucky Blue Smith, has become one of TikTok's standout stars, with commentators upset about everything from their (quite frankly insane) baby name choices, to Nara's conversion to Mormonism and ‘trad wife' content. Finally, a look at the seminal 90s book The Journalist and the Murderer, and how extremely relevant it feels today when considering the murky ethics of true crime reporting, as well as two article recommendations by fashion writer Camille Charrière, whose accounts of IVF and infertility have recently gone viral. Please leave us a review on Apple, rate us on Spotify, and drop us a DM @straightuppod on Insta, we LOVE hearing from you. Content warning: discussions around the depictions of childhood sexual abuse, rape, grooming, manipulation Kate Elizabeth Russell's 2020 novel, My Dark Vanessa, captures the intricate nuances of how one of the legacies of Vladimir Nobokov's controversial 1955 novel, Lolita, has been utilised by child sexual abusers as a tool for their manipulation. In this narrative, however, set in the dawn of MeToo reckonings, Russell gives Vanessa the gift not afforded to Dolores Haze, Vanessa lives. It's been a beautiful couple of weeks filled with pubs, trips out of the county, books and in Sarah's case, a bout of cystitis which meant she actually had time to read them. Huzzah! Our guest this week is the winner of the Ted Hughes Award (AKA a huge deal), a person who is not only one of Britain's foremost poets but one of Becky's absolute idols, the phenomenal Hollie McNish. Her new collection 'Slug (And Other Things I've Been Told To Hate)' is a delightful, poignant and hilarious collection of prose, poetry and essays which Becky more than got into with her as well as (because what else) wanking and being told off for reading out a poem about anal sex. Oops.As well as that, we of course have tonnes of recommendations and chat for you including the brilliant Motherland, Mare of Easttown, Deborah Levy's 'The Cost of Living', Brit Bennett's 'The Vanishing Half', heading to the dump and just Billie Piper in general. Just a normal week then eh?As always, we'd love it if you could leave us a review (but only if it's nice - at least we're honest) and to hear from you at the following: Instagram: @calmdowndearpodcastTwitter: @calmdowndearpodWebsite: https://www.calmdowndearpodcast.comEmail: calmdowndearpodcast@gmail.comShownotes:Billie Piper on Changes - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/billie-piper/id1465937091?i=1000512982808 The Cost of Living by Deborah Levy - https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/apr/06/cost-living-deborah-levy-review-feminist-manifesto-divorced-simone-beauvoir The Vanish Half by Brit Bennett - https://britbennett.com/the-vanishing-half Motherland - https://www.netflix.com/title/81284515 Mare of Easttown - https://www.hbo.com/mare-of-easttown A trip to the dump is one of my greatest pleasures in life - and I’m not alone - Richard Godwin - https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2021/may/22/trip-to-the-dump-great-pleasures-in-life-not-alone Hollie McNish - Slug - https://www.hachette.co.uk/titles/hollie-mcnish/slug/9780349726342/ Caroline Bird - https://www.carolinebird.co.uk/ Andrew McMillan - https://www.andrewmcmillanpoet.co.uk/ Natalie Diaz - https://www.faber.co.uk/author/natalie-diaz/ Rachel Sirmanni - https://www.youtube.com/c/RachelSermanni/featured Wizard Hand - https://wizardhand.bandcamp.com/ Hollie McNish - Honestly - https://www.instagram.com/p/CN8RmlXhZT_/ My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell - https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/mar/13/kate-elizabeth-russell-my-dark-vanessa-interview Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen - Like I Used To - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ibj87fwRaM Excess of Everything - Grace Campbell and Scarlett Curtis podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/excess-of-everything/id1567742552 Self Esteem - I Do This All The Time - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mtd_jlV61mA Entertain The Elk - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-gjznzViwMols6dz89qLbg Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart - https://www.douglasdstuart.com/books And keep your peepers peeled - we have a VERY exciting announcement coming soon... “Russell manages a brutal originality. . . . [an] exceedingly complex, inventive, resourceful examination of harm and power.” —The New York Times Book Review, Editors' Choice “To call this book a ‘conversation piece' or ‘an important book' feels belittling . . . [it] is so much more than that. It's a lightning rod. A brilliantly crafted novel.”—The Washington Post A most anticipated book by The New York Times • USA Today • Entertainment Weekly • Marie Claire • Elle • Harper's Bazaar • Bustle • Newsweek • New York Post • Esquire • Real Simple • The Sunday Times • The Guardian Exploring the psychological dynamics of the relationship between a precocious yet naïve teenage girl and her magnetic and manipulative teacher, a brilliant, all-consuming read that marks the explosive debut of an extraordinary new writer. 2000. Bright, ambitious, and yearning for adulthood, fifteen-year-old Vanessa Wye becomes entangled in an affair with Jacob Strane, her magnetic and guileful forty-two-year-old English teacher. 2017. Amid the rising wave of allegations against powerful men, a reckoning is coming due. Strane has been accused of sexual abuse by a former student, who reaches out to Vanessa, and now Vanessa suddenly finds herself facing an impossible choice: remain silent, firm in the belief that her teenage self willingly engaged in this relationship, or redefine herself and the events of her past. But how can Vanessa reject her first love, the man who fundamentally transformed her and has been a persistent presence in her life? Is it possible that the man she loved as a teenager—and who professed to worship only her—may be far different from what she has always believed? Alternating between Vanessa's present and her past, My Dark Vanessa juxtaposes memory and trauma with the breathless excitement of a teenage girl discovering the power her own body can wield. Thought-provoking and impossible to put down, this is a masterful portrayal of troubled adolescence and its repercussions that raises vital questions about agency, consent, complicity, and victimhood. Written with the haunting intimacy of The Girls and the creeping intensity of Room, My Dark Vanessa is an era-defining novel that brilliantly captures and reflects the shifting cultural mores transforming our relationships and society itself. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

Hannah Brown selects the small but beautiful poem by WH Auden ‘As I Walked Out One Evening'. Written in 1937, it is preoccupied with questions of the eternal, focussing on love versus time. It travels through younger days and the excitement of new loves to a more settled life, when kisses are replaced by health, when the focus of wondering is on how things may have been different and culminates in one's final moments. HANNAH BROWN hannahbrown.co.uk Hannah Brown, confirmed British landscape painter, introduces us to her love of fiction, reading excerpts from her selected poem. In our discussion she relays the importance of fiction, giving up television, sudden changes brought about by lockdown, connections between a time of world wars and the global pandemic, the range of experiences for those of us untouched by illness, missing friends, the blow up of Black Lives Matter and the sense of powerlessness when it comes to the changes needed for the wellbeing of our planet. She describes her art practice, detailing the witnessing of changes in the landscape from the west country to East London, what makes a site compelling for a landscape painter, how the presence of human life is portrayed without figures, the sublime tinged with fear, staying true to one's own temperament and passion, being genuine and authentic, attempts to domesticate nature and how she cried when Victoria Park was closed to the public. Together we wonder is love eternal or only time? Is it sudden endings which punctuate time, leading to its reassertion as a pivotal marker in our lives? Can we rely on nature itself to continue or is this also a thing of the past? When we look about, how much do we really see that is present and how much is imposed from our childhood past? Is the end of young love depressing or is it a relief to grow up and worry about a pension? Will worry take over our conscious life as it slips away? Is having less time a better condition for decisiveness? For taking risks in the studio? Is seeing less exhibitions better for looking more thoroughly? A review of the book titled 'My Dark Vanessa' by Kate Elizabeth Russell. I am discussing the dangers of emotional manipulation, pedophilia, grooming, and abuse of power. This book focuses on the relationship between an underage girl and her much older teacher who groomed and sexually assaulted her and the ripple effects that had on her life as she grew.

An arresting novel about a woman caught in the crosshairs of the #metoo movement, determined to make her own path.
It took 18 years for Kate Elizabeth Russell to write her debut novel, My Dark Vanessa, about a student who falls in love with her teacher. She joins host Angela Ledgerwood to discuss power dynamics within relationships, consent and how the Me-Too Movement influenced her writing. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Recovery of Rose Gold by Stephanie Wrobel. A fun thriller about Rose Gold whose mother Patty insists she is always unwell and constantly seeking medical attention for her – but it's Munchhausen by proxy. When she's found out and put away, Rose Gold starts to rebuild her life but also comes up with a cunning plan ready for when her mother is released. My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell : this was on every list of the most anticipated books of 2020 and has been getting outstanding reviews, though potentially tricky subject. It's about Vanessa, who while at school had a relationship with a teacher and believed herself to be his chosen one – and then some years later learns that another student has accused him of inappropriate behaviour and Vanessa has to come to terms with the fact that she wasn't special, and it wasn't love, and he was a predator. A kind of modern day Lolita. Very well written, both disturbing and thought provoking. The author wrote it over 20 years so it well predates the #MeToo movement, but it's timely.
