This is interesting ideas for a Friday and this is the day when we talk about Transformation. This is not just about changes or adjustments or perhaps some renewals, this is where we seek to become people who are very different and because of that we can do some very different and powerful things. We want to be people who have been transformed and because of that we can create, guide, perhaps direct, and even create an environment where transformation can take place for our lives, the people we love, the organizations we serve, and the good causes that we have been led to support. And then we want to share with you the five words that will help you begin to put into place your transformational plan.  It's just an introduction to the words but with your own creativity and some further coaching you can figure out how it might be helpful and useful to you. And unfortunately for President Joe Biden the transformation that he was hoping for did not take place.  And I will not dwell or even talk about that, but just to remind you that when it comes to presidential debates that we can learn a very significant lesson about how to use the mass marketing media today.  I have a story from my childhood that may illustrate a significant media lesson.

Award-winning author, Jon McGregor, set out to write about the Antarctic but it was to become a novel about stroke. Jon sat down with Julia and Elizabeth for On A Good Day to discuss the book, Lean Fall Stand, with many of its themes resonating with both hosts. Lean Fall Stand looks at the impact of stroke on survivor Robert and his wife who suddenly takes on the role of carer. It explores the challenges of communication post brain injury and its impact on the family and community. Jon tells them about the research he did to help create characters which were "real people" including an eye-opening group session for people with aphasia. In the novel, Jon refers to the lack of services available to help rehabilitate stroke survivors, speaking of his sadness at discovering how stretched they had become. Lean Fall Stand is an insightful exploration of stroke and with a potential film version of the book in the pipeline, is sure to reach an even wider audience in the future. Get started on writing your book with Josh athttps://www.publishedauthor.com/ ( Publishedauthor.com).   “Business should never be your highest priority. If it is, you will lose the business along with everything else.” Josh Steimle   Worst investment everWanting to be like the greatsJosh was a college student when he made his worst investment ever. At the time, he had what he thought was a great job making $13 an hour. The company Josh was working for was growing like crazy. And so he thought he should leave and start his own business. Josh would look at the company executives flying around, meeting with venture capitalists, having all the fun and making all the money, and think to himself, “I could do that too.” So he quit his job and started his own business. Doing what he knew bestJosh knew how to design websites and hence started a web design business. He thought this would be as easy ashttps://myworstinvestmentever.com/ep163-scott-smith-launching-a-business-find-your-future-you-and-listen-to-them-first/ ( launching a business), and then people line up and hire him. But nobody lined up. Soon enough, Josh had no money to pay rent and sold everything he owned on eBay to pay the rent. Things start to looking upAfter a while, Josh got a few clients and was able to survive. The business continued to grow steadily. Then he brought on a partner and then another, and the company grew a little bit more. It was tough, but he made it along. Heading separate waysJosh and the partners kept fighting and disagreeing on how to run the business. Eventually, things got so bad that they had to sell the business. Josh restarted over again in 2003. Things went back to being tough. Because of the bad experience he had with his partners, Josh decided to do this by himself. Giving business his allJosh went out and got a $100,000 loan from the bank. He also borrowed money from family and friends. He invested all the money in his new business, and for the next four years, he drowned himself in work. Josh would work 100 hours a week. He would go to sleep at three am on his office floor, wake up at 6 am and go right back to work six days a week. Josh didn’t take holidays; he worked Christmases and birthdays. He missed weddings and family reunions. Josh thought he was investing in himself, the business, and his family’s future. He believed that everything was going to pay off eventually, someday. Four years of nothingFor the next four years, Josh immersed himself in his business, but he made absolutely no profit. He didn’t pay himself a dime all this while because he couldn’t afford it and was drowning in about $500,000 of debt. Josh’s family had gained nothing from all the time and energy he put into the business. He was now at risk of losing his wife and family if he kept going down this path. It took Josh four years to realize that this was not working; it was not a good investment, and that he was losing everything. Taking it a notch downJosh decided that he would not continue working like this anymore. He started working 40 hours a week, spent more time with his wife, and didn’t work weekends anymore. A funny thing happened once Josh set those boundaries and said no more. Within two months, he was paying himself for the first time in four years. He was able to pay off 10 or 20 grand in debt every month, and his wife could quit her job. She had been supporting the family for the previous four years, and she hated it. Everything turned around as soon as Josh set those boundaries. Lessons learnedSet your own boundariesDon’t let life set the boundaries for you, do it yourself. If you leave it

What can we do to reduce the speed of climate change?  Bill McKibben argues that we're at a bleak moment in human history -- and we'll either confront that bleakness, or watch the civilization our forebears built slip away.  Bill was one of the first people to warn of the dangers of global warming, 30 years ago with his book The End of Nature.  Then he founded the environmental organization 350.org, the first truly global citizens movement to combat climate change.  It offers some possible ways out of the trap.  His new book is FALTER: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out? Also: Eric Hobsbawm was everybody’s favorite Marxist historian.  His books, especially “The Age of Revolution,” “The Age of Capital,” “the Age of Empire,” and “The Age of Extremes,” have been translated into 50 languages and sold millions of copies.  He was also a lifelong member of the British Communist Party, and his fight against Stalinist orthodoxy in the Party shaped his understanding of the past.  Richard J Evans explains – he’s the author of a big new biography of Hobsbawm.

Change Your Mindset
Ep. 54 - How Allen Lloyd Went from Executive Assistant to CEO Using the Principles of Improvisation

Change Your Mindset

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 12, 2017 50:55

Today's guest is Allen Lloyd, the new CEO of the Montana Society of CPA's and the former Senior Manager of the Board of Executive Operations at the Ohio Society of CPA's. In this interview, you will learn how Allen employed principles of improvisation to build trust, create new opportunities, learn new skills, and grow as a leader. We also have some fun (and learn a little bit more about two-way communication) by playing an improv game! You can find instructions to play that game with your team at the bottom of this post. Allen started his career in accounting as an Executive Assistant. It’s been a long, strange road from the offices of Norman, Jones, Enlow, & Co to the mountains of Montana, but a lot of his success came from being willing to improvise, try new things, and listen. It’s important to remember that Improv isn’t making stuff up. It's going into a room with nothing but walking out with something because you collaborated on an idea. Allen really understands how to be an active listener and collaborator. It’s a simple concept but, in practice, it can be very difficult to park your agenda, listen to understand, and then have a response... especially in today’s age of cellphones and the two-second news cycle. However, the ability to ask questions and then listen to everybody's input, comments, ideas, and then formulate some type of plan from that is critical for any good leader. Leadership isn’t being in charge – it’s listening so you can help the person next to you. “You can do more things by empowering others and giving them the tools they need than you're ever going to be able to do by yourself.” LAST WORD GAME: An improv game for you and your team During the interview, Allen and I play the Last Word Game. It can be a lot of fun, but it also helps teach active listening because you can't get ahead of yourself, which happens far too often in day-to-day conversations. Every player is required to listen to every word the other person says before they say anything. Here’s how you play: Separate into pairs The first person says a sentence - any sentence The second person follows up with a new sentence using the last word from the previous sentence. For example… Person 1: Follow is something that leaders are good at getting people to do is to follow them. Person 2: Them trees are growing outside. Person 1: Outside is where I'd rather be right now because the sun is shining. Person 2: Shining praise on your people is a very important thing to do as a leader.  Please let us know if you play this game with your team and tell us how it went. You can get in touch with Peter on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Instagram.   Resources: See what Allen is doing at the Montana Society of CPAs Be a Great Leader: How to Inspire Others to do Remarkable Things w/ Simon Sinek Production & Development for Improv Is No Joke by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices. With James Naughtie. Doctors work under the oath 'do no harm', but the neurosurgeon Henry Marsh says the decision whether to operate on a brain is rarely that simple. His account of his working life Do No Harm has caught the attention of readers all round the country since its publication a year ago and has this week Do No Harm won the South Bank Award for Literature, as well being shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson, Costa, and Wellcome book prizes this year. Henry discusses his memoir Do No Harm which is startling in its candour. He gives an extraordinary insight into his own thought processes as well as into the world of neurosurgical briefing meetings and hospital policies. Each chapter's starting point is a real-life case study and the book conveys his fascination with the human brain as well as the compassion required of a brain surgeon. Henry is honest about how a doctor must strive for balance between personal involvement with the patient and objectivity about their case. He talks about his failures, and the exhilaration of success. As always on Bookclub a group of readers, this month including members of the medical profession, join in the discussion. The strategies for marketing and selling for professional services firms aren't that complicated. But getting the leaders together and choosing a strategy often is. In this podcast we look at what leaders can do to make change happen at their firms with Dr. John Kotter, professor of leadership at Harvard Business School and author of New York Times bestsellers A Sense of Urgency and My Iceberg Is Melting, as well as the world's most influential book on organization change, Leading Change. He says people fail to successfully make change not because they lack capability and intelligence, but because they simply haven't been through a lot of big changes. The good news is you can learn it. You can do it. You can make some remarkable things happen. You just have to think in a different way. (Time: 11:58)
