It's a bright morning in early autumn, and a few hundred of us are seated on wooden pews in a historic auditorium at the New Mexico Museum of Art. A murmurous sound fills the hall as friends greet each other beneath a painted mural of St. Francis — patron saint of ecology and animals, those who are invisible to the outer world, and this place, Santa Fe, that we call home.Philosopher and poet David Whyte and teacher and author Henry Shukman take their seats on stage. Renowned in their respective fields and acquainted since their pub days, Henry wears slacks and a button-down, while David, in signature black, positions himself center stage.David opens his oratory with such agility and resonance I find myself wondering about the force that calls us to the artistry of our lives. James Baldwin once wrote about the inevitability of his calling: “The terrible thing about being a writer is that you don't decide to become one, you discover that you are one.” To be an artist seems less a choice than a truth to Baldwin, less a vocation than an unbidden command that could sweep the furnishings from your life.David's treatment of the word “unordinary” touches into this truth. He describes it as “what lies beneath my everyday life, like an interior seam of precious metal hidden by layers of my surface ordinariness; something to be uncovered and perhaps at times, even unleashed.”An interior seam of precious metal hidden by layers of my surface ordinariness —Something to be uncovered —even unleashed —A contemplative hush moves through the hall. David's voice rings a bell of intimacy and longing for many of us; it's a knowing nod to the untapped brilliance beneath the surface of our lives.By adulthood, most of us have charted a course. Consciously or otherwise, we have put our rudder in the water. We have tied our knots. And all along this voyage we call adulthood, we must continually tack in the direction we have assigned for ourselves. This is how, as the wide-open estuaries of youth narrow into the channels of midlife, we can lose sight of an intrinsic, irreducible essence within us.Or perhaps we make a choice. Faithfulness to the ordinary can keep us safe and serve us well for a time; it can support values like constancy, integrity, and trustworthiness. It can make us reliable and at least half-decent.Habituating ourselves to the ordinary may work for a while, tidying up the messy surface bits even as intuition whispers from the depths. On the other hand, striving to be extraordinary is exhausting and rooted in insecurity, a cycle of fear on repeat. But to be unordinary is to be liberated from the tensions of the ordinary and the appraisals of the extraordinary. “May what is hidden within you become your gift to the world,” David says.Pursuing an unsatisfactory life is no passive practice, however unprepared we may feel for the risk of something real. It's a bargain against our wholeheartedness—against the undefinable yet knowable essence that, in every moment, is breathing its way into being. Beneath our to-do lists and human dramas, our grasping and avoiding, our busy peddling of wares while forgetting the greater plot, there exists a wakeful, tender, and intelligent wilderness within us.“Dwell as near as possible to the channel in which your life flows,” counseled Henry David Thoreau, understanding that what is hidden within us will always make its way toward the light. Who can't relate to an inner knowing that, if given the chance, would inspire courageous acts of authenticity and influence the creative flow of your life?—Above the pews and beyond the windows from where we sit, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains extend skyward. A pavement project along Hyde Park Road, the only road linking downtown Santa Fe to its nearest peak, has resulted in the mountain being temporarily inaccessible to the public. It's a strange feeling for the humans who live here to be barred from the forests and rivers we know so well. From afar, we watch the face of our mountain as its hues change—first from deepening green to yellow, and now, as if signaling some secret thought, here comes a blush of crimson, cinnamon, and orange. Most days, ordinary is the kind of person I seem to want to be; it's the kind of person I tend to be. But this season, perhaps spurred by the particularities of my human loneliness, I long to be among the aspens with their shimmering sweep of drying leaves, each tree part of a singular organism that eats light and sends messages through tangled roots beneath the forest floor. Every day, on my way to wherever I'm going, I look toward the mountain and wonder, spared from the human gaze, what is happening beneath the veil of its exterior. The bear who lumbered from the deep woods at the bend in Borrego last Spring — is she feasting on trout before the river freezes? I imagine black stones sighing into river beds and afternoons casting long, warm shadows across untrammeled trails. Un-startled deer walking over fallen leaves and needles, their delicate nervous systems rebalancing. Furred creatures foraging for seeds, nuts, and berries among the underbrush. Oyster mushrooms growing in happy clumps on the underside of composting trees. And birds testing their wings for long flight.I imagine a kingdom, unburdened for a time, awakening to itself in a thousand brilliant ways.“At no other time (than autumn) does the earth let itself be inhaled in one smell, the ripe earth; in a smell that is in no way inferior to the smell of the sea, bitter where it borders on taste, and more honeysweet where you feel it touching the first sounds. Containing depth within itself, darkness, something of the grave almost.”― Rainer Maria RilkeEach season reflects a facet of nature's wisdom and offers us a mirror to reimagine our own experience of aliveness. In autumn, we touch inevitability, learning to bring forth the fruit that is ours, to surrender our leafy adornments. Loneliness and grief may be our teachers; this meditation may be bittersweet, but it will be wholly ours to claim.Backlit by an image of St. Francis, Henry's voice stirs the air with an invitation:Let the quiet come —Let the quiet come like a tide —Let the quiet come like a tide you've been waiting for your whole life.Invitation for reflection: What does it mean to you to “let the quiet come”? What unordinary awareness is making itself known through you as the season deepens? What thoughts, beliefs, habits, and behaviors must you let go of to make room for to integrate revelation, and what must you invite in?Together, we are making sense of being human in an era of radical change. On this week's show we give a brief lesson on American Antitrust law and how it applies to Hollywood. We also review the SofaBaton X1S Universal Remote. Is it a Harmony Replacement? We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: New YouTube TV Customers Can Get Can Get NFL Sunday Ticket For Just $179 a Year Disney Bundle Cuts Hulu Churn Nearly in Half (Charts of the Day) | Next TV Brad Pitt's Formula 1 Film Gets June 2025 Release Date From Apple Sony Pictures Buys Alamo Drafthouse Other: Only 100 cinemas can show 'Inside Out 2' as Pixar intended The HDR Superchannel Stop the FOMO SofaBaton X1S Review We have been searching for a Harmony Replacement since they discontinued what we felt was the best “consumer grade” remote on the market. We reviewed the SofaBaton X1 last november and felt it came close to being the Harmony Replacement. It worked but it still had some rough edges. Well, SofaBaton is back with the X1S ($189.99). The X1S has enhanced performance and compatibility compared to the X1. The X1S boasts features like “Raise to Wake” and supports a vast array of devices, over 500,000 across IR, Bluetooth, and WiFi thanks to its use of the “cloud code library”. There is even a Smart SofaBaton App, that allows you to manage devices, personalize buttons and activities. The X1S makes use of a hub that offers 360 degree control, 40 foot infrared range, and has support for IR blasters for devices in different rooms or in cabinets. There is also support for hands free control with Alexa and Google Assistant, personalized macro buttons, and API integration allows for third parties to further expand on the X1S' capabilities. The X1S also has backlit buttons, and a 45 day battery. The full feature list is below: Features: SofaBaton X1S Universal Remote: Enhanced performance and compatibility over X1 Supports 500,000+ devices (IR, Bluetooth, WiFi) Includes powerful cloud code library Smart SofaBaton App: Device management and customization Favorite channel organization Remote tracking and phone backup control Effortless OneClick Activities: Initiates predefined device settings with one command Example: "Music Time" activity for automated device control Powerful Hub: 360degree control 40foot infrared range 2 IR blasters for signal coverage Can be hidden in cabinet Voice Control with Alexa and Google Assistant Personalized Macro Buttons: Customizable key functions Create sequences for complex operations API Integration: Integration with other applications Personalized control through simple configurations Highlight Design: Raise To Wake function Backlight buttons Rechargeable battery lasting up to 45 days Thumb scroll wheel for quick device switching Setup: The setup process started out intuitive, but it required additional effort and time to fine tune the configuration. The Harmony had some configuration issues too but the X1S was a little more cumbersome. Once you grasp the app's workflow you can work through the issues. The app provides a step by step guide to help you quickly connect your devices. Like other remotes you can personalize buttons and set up macros for specific functions allowing you to customize the remote to suit your preferences. It took me 90 minutes to get my system (AppleTV, Oppo UHD Player, SONY TV, and Yamaha Receiver) up and running. Like the Harmony, once you have added your devices you then create activities. Then you test and then you tweak and you finally get it dialed in. One oddity was how the remote dealt with power. It has a concept of the steady state of the power setting for each device, which I thought was odd. So our tip is just say that your devices are always powered off. Then go into the startup settings and add the power on command for your devices. Do the opposite for the shutdown settings. This caused me at least 30 minutes of grief in setting it up. But once the setup was done the remote worked flawlessly! Performance: The SofaBaton X1S remote's build quality is top notch! And battery life is as advertised. The display is simple, clean and nothing fancy. I had to add delays between some commands for some activities to respond properly. The scroll wheel on the X1S is tighter and smoother than the X1, providing a more precise user experience. The inclusion of a USB C charging port allows usage while charging which is a nice added touch. Syncing commands from the phone to the remote takes a long time which can be annoying while making tweaks to dial in the exact commands you want. But once it's set up you no longer have to worry about this. Also, the battery charging level is only visible from the main screen. It would be nice if you could see it from any screen. We have used the remote for over a week and the family approves. No missed commands, easy to use. I still like my Harmony a little better but I am confident that the Sofabaton will improve with better configuration software and become the replacement to the Harmony we have all been wanting! Pros: Pleasing design and buttons with solid tactile response. Backlit buttons are great for dark rooms. The IR blaster sends signals omnidirectional. Handy "find the remote" button. Cons: The setup process proved challenging, particularly concerning the power settings. An unusual default configuration involved separate power on and power off buttons for each device, such as my receiver and TV. No Direct Number input No Dock for charging. Plugging in a cable is cumbersome Sync times are too slow The remote does not emit IR commands.

Pluto is putting in its best appearance of the year. It was at “opposition” on Sunday night, lining up opposite the Sun in our sky. So it rises around sunset and is in view all night. It's also closest to Earth for the year — more than three billion miles away. That means it shines brightest for the year, although you still need a good-sized telescope to see it. It's easy to find Pluto's location, though. It's well to the lower left of the teapot outlined by Sagittarius. Pluto is tiny — about two-thirds the diameter of the Moon. That means its gravity is weak. Yet it's strong enough to hold onto a thin atmosphere — wisps of nitrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide. The New Horizons spacecraft got a good look at the atmosphere when it flew past Pluto, in 2015. The atmosphere extended almost a thousand miles above the surface — a result of Pluto's weak gravity. But the atmosphere is so cold that it doesn't all escape into space. And it contains about 20 layers of haze, made of hydrocarbons and other heavy elements. Backlit by the Sun, the atmosphere looks blue — and for the same reason that Earth's air is blue: The nitrogen molecules scatter blue light, allowing redder wavelengths to shine through. From the surface of Pluto, though, you wouldn't see much of that air. It's no more than a hundred-thousandth as thick as Earth's — a cold but thin blanket around far-away Pluto. There are so many species of animals that spend their days in the trees. Good for them, but this can make photographing them VERY challenging. The difficulty comes in when the animal is high above you, forcing you to photograph against a backlit sky. How are you going to fix this? Are you going to NOT photograph that lemur? No! Follow this tips and techniques for getting the shot even in these challenging conditions.

Ok, so today’s episode was actually inspired by an artist who deleted his Instagram account. Waht-waht. That’s what I get for taking so long to make this show happen. So that means I can’t get in touch with him to use his work on the cover. But exactly a year after I’d drafted that story, at my annual creativity retreat, I made a photo that just so happened to work perfectly for the same story and I figured that was a sign not to scrap it. I’ll describe both photos for you and I’ll give you a link in the shownotes to see the original photo by the mysterious “@daniel.macro” where, at least at the time of this recording, it’s still featured on a curated photography feed on Instagram. [Art Description:] The original photo is a close up photo of a fluffy dandelion and a ladybug. The flower’s bare dotted center, which is missing seeds on its top half, fills up the frame’s top left quarter. Wrapped around the edge of that center is an elliptical band of brown seeds still clinging to the flower. The fluffy parts of the bluish white seeds are mostly out of focus throughout the rest of the photo, giving it an overall dreamy feel. But a couple of seeds are sharp, and crawling up the stalk between the fluff and the flower’s center is a red ladybug. Immediately when I saw this photo I thought of wishes. And I wondered what a ladybug would wish for. As I did some quick research, I discovered that many of the bugs I had previously thought were ladybugs were totally different species. When I dug a bit deeper I found that some of these beetles, like the spotted cucumber beetle, weren’t even carnivorous like their ladybug cousins who are reveled by gardeners for their hunting abilities, but instead are more often considered pests. As you already know, those notes remained untapped, until a year later, when I happened to come across a spotted cucumber beetle while I was photographing some interesting flowers. I spent at least an hour with him, and I got several amazing shots, but I’ll just describe my favorite, the one you can find on the cover of this episode in case you don’t get a chance to check it out. The background of my photo is soft, made up of a variation of greens that blend into yellows. Two pink flower petals are coming into the frame from the bottom right corner, and a green spotted cucumber beetle rests toward the left side of the topmost petal. Now that I’m comparing the two insects up close and side by side, I can see their differences. Ladybugs are rounder, and their spots are patterned differently. This green beetle has 3 neat rows of four black spots all lined up perfectly, his body is more oval and elongated, and his antennae are a bit longer. But… just forget about all of those differences… because they’re totally going to ruin my story! Let’s just pretend in this world we’re about to enter into, that ladybugs and cucumber beetles look exactly the same, but are just bugs of a different color. I hope you enjoy, The Ladybug’s Wish. [Story:] “No!!! Don’t eat me, please!” Those were the last words Lynelle heard right before she crunched down on the little mite. “Am I a monster?” she asked herself as she slowly cleaned her antennae, afterwards. It wasn’t like Lynelle wanted to eat other bugs, but a ladybug’s got to eat. As it was, she’d cut back so much on her meals, that she feared she might be slowly starving herself. Most of her peers ate dozens of mites every day, sometimes even up to 100 of them, and it’s no surprise that after eating only half of that, Lynelle’s tummy still ached for more. But she just couldn’t bring herself to kill another innocent insect. “If you make another pass over those antennae, you’re likely to rub your shell away,” called a sweet [southern] voice from above. Lynelle had been reliving the moments leading up to her last meal on repeat, the mite’s haunting pleas for his life echoing as if it were trapped in a cave of infinite depth. She stopped cleaning her antennae. “Oh, hi Ana,” she said, looking up. Ana was resting atop a tiger lily, her iridescent blue wings shimmering in the sunlight as she slowly fluttered them. She brushed the pollen off of her front legs and cleaned her own antennae. Lynelle noticed that the sun had moved quite a bit since the last time she’d looked up. “I guess I just got lost in my head for awhile.” “What’s the matter Miss Lynelle?... why don’t you climb on up here and tell me what’s bothering you?” Ana asked. Then she fluttered up into the air a bit, and then down to rest on a lower orange lily. Lynelle sighed, but then cracked open her red-spotted armor to let her own wings carry her. She landed atop the fluff of a nearby dandelion, and tried to pretend that she didn’t hear the mites screaming beneath her. “Lady-hunter!” one of them shrieked, and Lynelle could feel the vibrations as several bugs escaped down the stalk below her. “That’s what’s wrong,” Lynelle gestured toward the retreating mites with one of her legs, “I’m a monster. Everyone fears me.” “Well everyone’s got to eat, my dear,” Ana replied, “and your kind eat mites.” “But what if I don’t want to be my kind anymore? What if I want to change?” Lynelle was silent for a while, but then she suddenly had an idea, “You’ve changed Ana, you used to be a caterpillar and now you’re a butterfly, can’t you teach me to change like you have?” “I’m… I’m not really sure I can.” Ana said, but then her concentrated expression lightened with a smile. “I don’t think I can help you turn you into a butterfly, but perhaps… perhaps you can make a wish.” “A wish?” Lynelle said doubtfully. “Yes, I always hear the gardener telling her son about the power dandelions have to make wishes come true!” Ana explained excitedly. “Dandelions?” Lynelle looked down at the fluffy surface she was standing on. “Yes! Whenever they’re out here she tells him to pick all of the dandelions, make a wish, and blow all the seeds off the stalk to make it come true. And I’ve also heard her say that the more dandelions he picks, the more likely it is that his wish will come true.” Ana concluded confidently. “I guess… it… couldn’t… hurt to try,” Lynelle said slowly, “but what would I wish for?” “You could wish to transform into a spotted cucumber beetle,” Ana suggested, “then you wouldn’t have to eat mites anymore.” “What a great idea Ana!” Lynelle beamed. It might be hard to learn how to be a different bug altogether like a butterfly, but aside from eating vegetables and having a green shell instead of a red one, spotted cucumber beetles were very similar to ladybugs. She’d still be able to fly and walk the same way. She’d hardly have to relearn anything at all. If only she could guarantee her wish would come true. Lynelle looked across the flowerbed, excited to see there were plenty of fluffly dandelions to wish on. She jumped up into the air, cracking her wings as she held on tight to the fluffy floor at her feet and pulled. Without much effort, a single seed loosened, and Lynelle wished hard. She imagined a green shell. She imagined baby mites sliding down her shell and screaming, not in fear, but in delight. She imagined munching on cucumbers, and melons, and squash without guilt. She imagined what it would feel like to finally be full again. “Ana,” Lynelle said as she began tugging on another seed, “can you help me?” A large clump of the fluffy seeds came free this time, and she floated around Ana on a twisting breeze, leaping off before it carried her too far away. “There are a lot of dandelions here and I figure two wishers are better than one.” “Of course, darlin’,” Ana said, and she took flight. The two of them set off and got to work wishing, defluffing every dandelion in sight, and soon the air throughout the garden was full of floating, flying seeds. As the sun dropped down toward the horizon behind the tree line, the light quivered to the beat of leaves dancing in the breeze. Backlit seeds illuminated like magical orbs in the golden light. A few hours later Lynelle dropped to the ground, exhausted, and tucked in her wings for the night. She sighed as she watched Ana fly away. *** Lynelle slowly blinked herself awake as a brighter, newer spectrum of sunshine sparkled through the morning dew. Birdsong made its way into her ears, pulling her further out of her dream world. She’d dreamt she was riding dandelion seeds through a tornado, spinning round and round in chaotic delight. Her stomach rumbled and she groaned, now fully awake. A line of mites marched by and a couple of them looked at her and… could this be right?... smiled at her. Lynelle squinted, trying to narrow in her focus, but then her face went slack as she realized something even more odd: none of them were running away or screaming. “Could it really have happened?” Lynelle whispered to herself, “Did my wish come true?” After the mites had passed and Lynelle could finally rouse herself out of her stupor, she climbed up a blade of grass with a plump dewdrop at the top. As her weight shifted the grass the dewdrop swiftly slid down past her giving her a brief glimpse of her reflection. It was just a flash, but it was a flash of green, not red. Lynelle leapt up into the air as the droplet splattered on the ground below and soaked into the parched soil. Her shell split open above her head like two umbrellas, and her wings released carrying her upward. She could just make out the top edge of her shell if she peered up at it… and it was green! Lynelle did several victory spirals and finally crash-landed into the soft funnel of a tiger lily. Flying was never her best skill and, apparently, that hadn’t changed with her transformation. Pollen clung haphazardly along Lynelle’s antennae and face, but she was unharmed. Her tummy gurgled again and this time she got excited anticipating the garden full of fruits and veggies that awaited her. A shadow passed overhead and a faint vibration resonated from the flower and through Lynelle’s legs. Ana’s pretty face appeared in the lily’s opening as Lynelle made her way back outside. “Oh, Ana, look!” Lynelle said, “It worked! It really worked! Look at me! I’m a cucumber beetle!” Ana smiled knowingly, “Of course it worked.” “Thank you so much for helping me,” Lynelle said, “I couldn’t have done it without you. But I’m absolutely famished, so I’m heading into the vegetable garden.” “Of course you couldn’t have,” Ana muttered beneath a smile, but Lynelle was already flying away and hadn’t heard her. “I’ll see you later!” Lynelle called back to her. *** Not much later Lynelle took one last bite of the cucumber she’d been chomping on, lazily let go of her grip, and slid down the vegetable’s long side on her belly to land heavily on her feet at the ground. After gorging herself on watermelon and squash and then finally cucumber, Lynelle felt so full she could hardly move. Despite the slight physical discomfort, though, she was grateful for the weight that was lifted from her mentally. No longer did she have to feel guilty for eating. No longer would she have to choose between feeling hunger pangs or the equally sharp pain of stealing another’s life. As Lynelle was resting and reveling in the events of the past two days, she heard a faint sound that was getting louder fast. Giggles mixed with the delightful screeches of children at play as several tiny mites came sliding down the cucumber and landed on Lynelle’s back. “Woah, that was fun!” said one of the kids. “Let’s do it again!” said another. “Don’t you even think about it!” said a reprimanding voice from high above. Lynelle looked up to see a larger mite briskly making her way down the cucumber as fast as her little legs would carry her. “How many times have I told you, sliding is dangerous! And what if you had run into a predator down here instead of this nice beetle?” she paused to look at Lynelle and gave her an apologetic smile. “I’d never have been able to get to you in time.” Lynelle grinned back at her. “Come down this instant,” the momma mite said, “and don’t you dare—” but before she could finish her sentence the kids were already gleefully sliding down Lynelle’s back. “Weeeee!” they cried out, and Lynelle was stunned into silence. She couldn’t believe that her daydream of making friends with the mites was literally happening in real life—down to the smallest detail. “Eww, what’s that green goop on your back?” one of the children said, jarring Lynelle out of her thoughts. “I dunno, but it’s all over you too,” another giggled out. “All of you, please come here. Right this instant.” Their mom said again, but her tone had changed. There was a quaver in her voice that made it sound less like a demand and more like a desperate plea. She was staring, wide eyed at Lynelle’s shell. One kid followed his mother’s gaze and when his eyes hit their destination his face instantly transformed, reflecting the same shocked expression she wore. “Lady-hunter!!!” the little mite screamed. A wave of panic swept over the group and they all scuttled away. Lynelle tried to call after them. “Wait, what’s wrong? What did I do?” But her confused words were no doubt drowned out by their frenzied screams… not that they would have stopped and answered her if they had heard her… not in the spooked state they were in. Had her wish been revoked? Had her time run out so soon? Had she already lost all she’d thought she’d gained? How else would they have known about the predator she’d transformed from? Lynelle cracked her shell and clumsily flew upwards; all that she’d eaten was weighing her down. She expected to see red when she looked up, but no, her shell was still green… at least the bit of it that she could see. She needed a dewdrop to know for sure though, to confirm that she was still the bug she wanted to be. And there wouldn’t be any dewdrops until morning… unless… unless the gardener would be out soon with her watering can. Lynelle wasn’t sure if the gardener had been out yet, but sometimes there was some leftover water in the can, and if there was, that would be just fine. Her flight was wobbly and strenuous, but she was determined to find out what was going on. Lynelle landed on the edge of the watering can with a huff of a relief and peered inside. The sunlight was hitting her perfectly and her reflection shone bright and colorful against the dark surface of the water below. Her shell was still green. Perplexed, Lynelle carefully rotated herself to look at the other side, and as she did so she remembered that this was the side the kids had slid down. And there it was: the cause of the little bugs’ panic. Even as thin as it was, the bold red popped out against the pale green like a flashlight on a moonless night, and it spanned the whole height of her shell. A light breeze fluttered across Lynelle’s body and Ana appeared beside her, the slightest ripple passed over them in the water below, making Ana’s blue iridescence seem even more magical as it wavered. Lynelle looked up at her miserably. “Wishes don’t come true,” she said, “I’m still the same old ladybug.” She gestured to her reflection in the smooth black pool below and sighed. “I was afraid you’d find out sooner rather than later,” Ana said. “You did this?” “Well, I had a bit of help from some ants, but it was my idea, yes.” “But… why?” “Are you hungry Lynelle?” “No.” “Did you eat any mites?” “No,” she drew out the word as the realization dawned on her. “Wishes start from the inside,” Ana said. “But when we believe we can’t change because of outside circumstances, that belief keeps our inner power locked up tight.” She paused for a moment to let that sink in. “What we believe on the inside is what changes the outside. Trying to do it the other way around, as you can see, is a temporary solution to an ongoing problem. But I thought it might help you to recognize your power.” [Conclusion:] So what did you think of that? I’m actually a bit surprised at how this story came out, it could be a children’s book… don’t you think? Which is very interesting to me, because the real life Lynelle, who is one of our newest Patrons, is actually a children’s book author herself. She wrote A Zoo Just for You, which is a really fun book with two of my favorite things: animals and rhyming! I’ll link to that book in the shownotes so you can check it out. But it’s only as I was writing the conclusion to this episode that I realized I must have been channeling Lynelle somehow as I wrote this. Because I’ve never once set out to write specifically for children, in fact this story was supposed to end very differently. The idea came to me at a more cynical time in my life. At the time I was a newer vegan, maybe a year or two from when I stopped eating dairy and eggs. I was still hurting a lot from the truths I’d discovered, and more specifically, from the reactions I’d gotten from some family and friends about my decision. You see, from my perspective I was making a decision that came from a place of love. I was absolutely sure I was doing the biggest thing a single human being in an animal-product heavy culture could do to vote with my wallet. I guess… I thought, that people would, at the very least, respect my decision, at the best, maybe I’d inspire them to make more loving decisions themselves. But I was oh-so-wrong about that. Instead I got tons of resistance, I got lots of cruel jokes, walls went up, and the sensitive introvert in me cowered away from people who were determined to stay trapped in their comfortable bubble of social programming. Don’t get me wrong, there were some who asked thoughtful questions, some who listened to the stories I told as I burst into tears. And though many people accept my decision as a part of who I am, it’s a rare gem that’s willing to go so far as to make changes in their own lives. More than once over the past few years I’ve had to ignore the voice in my head that wants to lock myself away in my own comfort zone, ditch all my lifelong omnivore friends, and move to Woodstock to find a tribe of vegan hipsters that will take me in. But I know that change is hard. I know that seeds planted sometimes take a long time to grow. So I have to keep planting seeds where they can grow, and the most fertile soil is in people who don’t know yet the power they have to change the world. Not just for animals, but for the environment and for their very own health. But anyway… that was a very long tangent to say that I felt like a vegan victim for a long time. I felt like making a decision guided by love had somehow caused people to fear, hate, and feel threatened by me. And so the ladybug was originally going to die in the end. In a shocking twist the gardener was supposed to show up, see the cucumbers in her garden all chewed up, follow the trail of destruction to the green beetle, and crunch it into oblivion for being a “pest.” I know that ending came from a metaphorical sense of self-loathing. I know that by killing off the herbivorous beetle I would’ve been trying to express how I felt the world received my own intentions to live a more peaceful existence. But since then, I’ve had a lot of spiritual growth in my life. I’ve learned more about how the Universe works. I’ve realized that anybody who hurts me is coming from a place of hurt themselves. And so I’ve tried my best to step out of my comfort zone. Instead of quietly hiding my veganism I decided to do something scary. I decided to teach people about vegan choices and the reality of what animal agriculture is doing to harm animals and our rapidly dying planet. I did that by becoming a tour guide at Catskill Animal Sanctuary last year, where I got to hang out with some of the 300 plus lucky cows, pigs, chickens, goats, sheep and horses who live there (among many other animals) and introduce them and their stories to visitors, and if you’re into podcasts you should check out theirs. Kathy Stevens, the founder and host of All Beings Considered, is an amazing storyteller. I’ll link to my favorite episode about a sheep named Rambo in the shownotes. It’s the most inspiring story about a real life animal I’ve ever heard. Anyway, that brings me to another shoutout, because Ana Kuprava, who our butterfly character was named after, is one of my fellow tour guides at the sanctuary, a new vegan friend, and she’s also become a supporter of the show on Patreon. I never had any intention of doing anything other than naming my characters after our new Patrons… but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that memories of lessons learned at Catskill Animal Santuary weren’t running through my head as wrote this story. Especially as I decided that the murderous ending I had in mind didn’t serve the story at all as well as it could. So thank you to both of you, not only for supporting Art Ink on Patreon, but also for inspiring me to make this a better story than it would have been without you! And thank you, my friends, for listening! That’s all for this show, but we’ll be back with a new artist and a new adventure in just a couple of weeks… so stay tuned… but until then, remember that you can be whatever you want to be… the best version of you is already inside of you, you only need to find the courage to be it.

Hello and welcome to Awaken Your Spirit podcast. I'm Tangerine your host today. I want to thank you for joining me. Today's podcast is going to be about creating and owning your own business. Today I'm going to talk about · fear · How life is too hectic, · time management, · how to create and envision your business, · how to write a business plan · how to shop for commercial property · how to negotiate a good lease · what to look for when you're looking at commercial property · how to write a letter of intent · management of people · how to deal with the pressures of family · how to figure out what your end goal is · how to use your business to create relationships with your community · and lastly marketing. So let's start with fear because this is a big thing to overcome when you're considering opening a business. There are two types of people in this world. There are entrepreneurs, and there are people who work for entrepreneurs. Both are equally valuable, and you have to determine what you're entirely comfortable within life. When I envisioned talking about this podcast, I honestly did it for the people who have been incarcerated, especially here in California. When they get out, it's almost impossible to get a job. I wanted these people to know that they can open their own business and indeed turn their lives around. So this is the blueprint that I'm laying down for those who want something different in their lives. There will be fear in our lives. However, we have to overcome the fear, or else it will hold us back. Owning your own business is going to be extremely stressful at times, but whether you own your own business, or not, life, in general, can be extremely stressful. An excellent way to combat stress is by doing daily meditation, and we offer those on our podcast for you. I've seen many people not follow through with their dreams of owning their own business because they think life is too hectic. Standing back and looking on the outside, I realized it all boils down to time management. When you want to Branch out to be your boss and to create your own company, you have to get started way before the business opens. That means you have to go to work and do your regular job, do your workout routine, spend time with your family and your community, and after all that you have to go home and spend 4 to 8 hours working on your business every day. When you fall into that routine, what that's doing is preparing you for those long hours you're going to be putting in when you first open your company. The next thing you want to do is start to create and envision what your company is going to be. What is the name, create a price list for your services or the products that you're going to be selling, start designing your website, there are many websites available for less than $100 a year so shop around and find the easiest to use and the most affordable. That website has to be very professional and very easy to navigate through. Check out WordPress or Squarespace for websites. You also want to start designing a space and determining what you build-out, or your business needs to look like for it to fully function. What is the minimum amount of space that you can operate? Start a Pinterest board so you can get different ideas for designs and decors. You can also get ideas on Pinterest about what to post on your social media. You should have a separate social media exclusively for the business with no personal. Have a notebook with different sections in it and write out all the ideas that come to your mind. Attend community events about your business. Look at OfferUp, Craigslist, newspapers, go to yard sales and go through your garage to find equipment and decor that you can use in your new business. Save money by refurbishing and repainting items that you get for free or very low-cost. Look up the insurance needed for your business to get quotes. Look up the legal forms that you need for your business and the permits that are required. Create protocols and employee handbooks. Next, we want to talk about your business plan. You can download templates online, or you can call up a small business association. They typically provide you with materials at no cost. I got a business plan called Penelope's pie shop, and I copied it page for page and just transitioned the verbiage into what I needed it to say for my business. Also, I still use that to this day. They say that most people never complete their business plans because of the financial page. That should be easy. How much money do you need to make per month, how much do you estimate your fixed expenses to be, and that will be the beginning numbers of how much you expect you will generate each month. Break it down by day for a daily goal, then weekly, monthly, and yearly. Shopping for commercial property is very fun, and you'll find once you open your own business that you're regularly buying for commercial property, it's like something that never turns off (at least in me). You want to drive by and write down the phone numbers and call and ask how big space is, what the cost is per square foot, if there are any additional fees on top of the price of the lease, how long it's been vacant, also, what was the prior business? I got fortunate to find a day spa already built out. When you go to tour a prospective commercial property, you want to begin to envision and determine what the build-out would need to be for your business to be successful there. Take pictures and note: the electrical the plumbing. Handicap access These things can be very costly, negotiate for the expenses in your and tenant improvements. So any build-out is considered a "tenant Improvement." Also, this is money that you can settle for before signing a lease. You also want to check out the signage. Backlit signs can be as expensive as $6,000 so pay attention to the type of signage that is on the building. Make sure to check that the building is zoned appropriately for the business you wish to attain. I remember I almost signed a lease for a building that was not in the zone for a nail salon and it's not up to that landlord to tell you that information, you can find that out by calling the city permitting and zoning board. So a proper negotiation of a lease would look something like this: let's say the building is 1000 square feet and they're asking $3.50 per square foot, so that's going to be $3,500 per month. You're willing to sign a five-year lease, you're asking for the space to be $2 per square foot, and you're asking for a $50,000 tenant build-out, three months free rent, and the landlord to pay for the signage. I also want to share a recent lease negotiation done by a broker that I was recently working alongside. She got a nail bar owner a $200,000 build-out, six months free rent and half off the next six months for signing a five-year lease. Sometimes you have to negotiate on the spot, but try to make sure it's once you have enough information to start the negotiations. There's no point in negotiating if you don't know if that building is zoned for that type of business. You want the estimate for the build-out cost to be as close to what you're asking. So no money has to come out of your pocket. So you can have contractors come in and look at the property with you, as well, before you even begin any negotiations. Some realty companies offer services from a broker who will negotiate everything for you and will help you find commercial properties. I think the only downside to that is that the usually only look at Tier A properties. The tiers go from A-D. However, brokers are very awesome to work with because they do find the properties for you, they do typically negotiate everything in your best interest, and the landlord pays their fees. When you're ready to negotiate, and you want to do it on your own you can download a form called an L.O.I.- It's a "letter of intent," and this is where you start the negotiation process with the landlord. If you decide to do the negotiations in person, make sure it is in person and not over the phone and not through text message. Another area you're going to want to strengthen before you open your business is the management of people. You want to be able to build a robust and reliable team. It's stressful when you have to be present to ensure your company is running smoothly. So you want to create protocols and have excellent training. I do all my training on my own in monthly meetings. I have found that using Google slides and discussing contracts keeps people engaged and informed. You can also take some classes at your local community college in the areas that you feel you need to strengthen. I took one entrepreneurial class at a local college, and it was great. A tip I would like to share when it comes to recruiting talent or staff is to look online at Craigslist and Indeed, and see how other similar companies are writing their help wanted ads. I typically like to search in the larger cities; I found some great ideas for my help wanted ads that I would never have thought of on my own. You also want to spend time listening to books on topics such as leadership, self-help, positive thinking, managing people, and any other issues you feel will strengthen your ability to run a successful business. Owning your own business does require time. If you're managing your time and spending time outside of your working life and your family lives, you're already noticing the toll that it takes. Many times people feel guilty that they're spending so much time away from their families. If it makes you feel any better, I felt guilty working a regular job because I was away from my boys so much. Everybody has to work. However, it feels so much better to be working for yourself; it's just something different. Also, try to visualize what the end goal is? Are you going to build this company up and then sell it? What's your exit plan? They call it an exit strategy? Do you want to open multiple businesses? Do you want to pass the industry down to the family? Give yourself an end goal for this company. Before you open your business, you can begin to strengthen your relationships within the community. The Chamber of Commerce is a great way to be involved with your community and to put your business as a name out there. Every month for our local Chamber of Commerce meetings, I donate 3-5 gifts for a raffle for attendees. It allows me to get in front of people and talk about my business and also to give away services and products, so people will know what we carry. You can be very creative and what you give away at raffles. Owning your own business allows you to spend time in an area of your community that you want to give back. You can create partnerships with different organizations and help them in ways that don't even require money if your business isn't profitable at first. The only way you're going to start generating ideas on what you could do is by attending these meetings and paying attention. Moreover, lastly, I want to talk about marketing. I spoke of the website earlier, and I did mention how it has to be very easy to travel through for your clients. So you want to know what your client experiences when they visit your website. Make sure you are seeing what your clients see on their mobile phones, as well as their laptops and computers. The client journey through your website should be flawless. It would be best if you also had a strong presence on your social media. If you're not sure how to do this, look at similar businesses who have a large following, and see what they're posting and how often. Go to the big companies and see what they're doing on their social media. There are often free classes online, videos on YouTube, videos on Facebook, and books that will teach you how to grow a good following on your social media. Another thing that will help you drive business into your company is a sandwich board sign in front of your business. When you're looking at spaces to potentially lease out make sure that you're able to use a sandwich board near the street to attract new clients. Moreover, with any posters, window decals, or sandwich board signs, you want always to try to minimize the number of words that you place on that sign, and make sure that those words are instrumental in communicating what your business does and what your special offer is. On my sandwich board, it said $20 pedicure. That's it, and I became fully booked within three months. Make sure someone can tell what you do in 2-3 seconds of seeing your sign. I want to thank you for joining me and listening to my podcast. I hope I gave you some motivation, and some new insight and please share my podcast with any other entrepreneurs you know who would love to listen to this and could benefit. I also want to talk about my partnership with B.S.O, which is Beauty Supply Outlet. The owners, Sylvester and Henry, come into Native American owned salons and bring in shelving (that you pick) salon products (that you choose) a free point of sale system with a cash register at zero cost to the business owner. They also partner with Native Americans who live on or within 20 miles of a reservation to open up stand-alone beauty supply stores or with casinos and resorts. So if you're interested in this business opportunity to reach out to me through my website, you can find me by Googling: Native Dreams Day Spa in Alpine, California or you can find me on Facebook or Instagram by searching for native dreams Day spa. In our upcoming podcast, we're going to be discussing what it's like to grow up on the reservation versus growing up native in the city, otherwise known as an Urban Indian. It's going to be a great discussion with Karen, myself, and Camille. We hope you join us! Have a beautiful day, and thank you for listening to my podcast.

Backlit by a bright glow of iridescent light, the undecipherable form wore a dazzling golden mask. Its long beak swooped down like an inverted horn and since then, people have referred to the mythical being simply as Claptone. Years spending wandering medieval landscapes have informed Claptone’s view of the world, experi- encing both magical mystery and muted melancholy he enchanted onlookers with occult instruments and beguiling sounds. Forever surrounded by a sense of intrigue, the world soon cottoned on to the elusive yet enchanting musical powers of this otherworldly beast. The results are that today his sha- manistic sonic powers take him all around the world. Whilst Claptone has continued to roam in his own circles, 2012AD proved to be a year dominated by his infectious ‘Cream’ track. It became an immediate hit, topping new world charts at Beatport and RA, whilst the sonic conjuring of the ‘Night On Fire’ EP also lured all those who heard it, with the result another Top 20 hit. But that’s not all, for the creativity flows freely in our hero, and his ‘Another Night’ also proved to be just as successful on the dancefloor. Deep and woozy, the Claptone sound pairs theatre with tragedy, feel good vibes with acute melancholia and imbues each groove with a Rhodes laced funk, an organic string hook and myriad earthy elements. Up to the present day, Claptone releases have been birthed on Germany’s influential Exploited label, picking up props from the likes of Pete Tong, DJ Sneak, Soul Clap, DJ Hell, Jesse Rose, A-Trak along the way. Who or whatever Claptone is, it is alive, with a life of its own, evolving and revolving in equal measure, exploring new sounds naturally and forever taking inspiration from long gone and occult worlds. So far, esteemed and influential dancefloors at clubs in Berlin, London, Paris, Melbourne, Shanghai, New York and many others around the world have fallen under the sonic spell of this secretive alche- mist. The future is unpredictable for Claptone, but a new release ‘Wrong’ including the track ‘No Eyes’ with the inimitable JAW from French funsters dOP is on the horizon. Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours... exploitedghetto.de // facebook.com/claptone.official // label contact: info@exploitedghetto.de // press contact: press@claptone.com
