Filmmaker Carlos López Estrada Uplifts Indie Voices with Antigravity

Carlos López Estrada definitely paid his dues – shooting scores of music videos and short pieces for a pittance while living at his mother's for years after film school – before he had the chance to direct his first full-length feature film, “Blindspotting.” That well-reviewed film landed him his first studio feature when Disney hired him to co-direct the animated film “Raya and the Last Dragon.” He is nonetheless the first to point out that a number of elements, including a film-school education and supportive parents, made his path to success easier than what awaited most of his cohort of up-and-coming filmmakers. He therefore focused on a new kind of creative endeavor: Antigravity Academy. Founded by Carlos in 2023, Antigravity is a hybrid business. It offers a range of educational initiatives designed to provide young, aspiring filmmakers — particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds — with the tools, mentorship and opportunities to develop their voices and tell their own stories. It also has a producing arm devoted to developing and bringing to life projects that would otherwise have difficulty finding funding. Antigravity's first produced film, “Dìdi,” a glowingly reviewed coming-of-age story by Sean Wang, proved that Carlos' mentoring and producing instincts are spot-on. “Dìdi” recently won two awards at the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards: Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay. In this interview, Carlos describes how his experiences in Hollywood shaped Antigravity Academy's mission and programs and explains why empowering new voices is not only helping to bring surprising stories to the screen but also making him a better artist.https://antigravityacademy.co/

Every year, the Multnomah County Library chooses one book they hope the whole city of Portland will read. Between January and April, the Library, and their partner organizations, host events based around the themes of the book, and they distribute thousands of free copies—thanks to the Library Foundation—to readers of all ages from across the county. Here at Literary Arts, our role is to bring the author to town for a talk in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.   This year, the 2025 Everybody Reads selection is the memoir Solito by Javier Zamora. For information about how to engage with the program, visit the Multnomah County Library's web site. I am thrilled to say Javier Zamora will be in Portland on Tuesday, March 11 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall for the culminating event of the 2025 Everybody Reads Program.   For now, let's return to the 2024 Everybody Reads event, featuring Gabrielle Zevin and her novel Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.   Gabrielle Zevin has been steadily publishing fiction for almost two decades and has also written occasional criticism as well as award-winning screenplays. But it was Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow that catapulted her to the stratosphere of literary stardom. It was a #1 New York Times bestseller and spent over 50 weeks on the fiction bestseller list.    To be sure, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is about video games, and makes a convincing argument for the power and potential of narrative storytelling in video games. But really, it is about making art, and questions about originality, appropriation, and ambition that come with that pursuit. And perhaps more so, it is a love story, about friends and creative partners, and the excitement, joy, tragedy, and betrayal that come with any long relationship. It's about something, I'd wager, we've all been thinking about the past few years: connection.    Tickets for Everybody Reads 2025 with Javier Zamora are on sale now! Find your tickets here.  Gabrielle Zevin is a New York Times best-selling novelist whose books have been translated into forty languages.   Her tenth novel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, was a New York Times Best Seller, a Sunday Times Best Seller, and a selection of the Tonight Show's Fallon Book Club. Tomorrow was Amazon.com's #1 Book of the Year, Time Magazine's #1 Book of the Year, a New York Times Notable Book, and the winner of both the Goodreads Choice Award for Fiction and the Book of the Month Club's Book of the Year. Following a twenty-five-bidder auction, the feature film rights to Tomorrow were acquired by Temple Hill and Paramount Studios.  The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry also spent many months on the New York Times Best Seller List. A.J. Fikry was honored with the Southern California Independent Booksellers Award for Fiction, the Japan Booksellers' Prize, among other honors. A.J. Fikry is now a feature film with a screenplay by Zevin. She has also written children's books, including the award-winning Elsewhere.   She is the screenwriter of Conversations with Other Women (Helena Bonham Carter) for which she received an Independent Spirit Award Nomination for Best First Screenplay. She has occasionally written criticism for the New York Times Book Review and NPR's All Things Considered, and she began her writing career, at age fourteen, as a music critic for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. Zevin is a graduate of Harvard University. She lives in Los Angeles.

Dito Montiel's upbringing in Astoria was filled with so many unique characters which affected him on a lot of different levels. His memoir, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, is a collage of these visceral experiences and how they shaped how he sees the world through music, writing and film. He wrote and directed the seminal film adaptation of his novel which won the Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance and received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Screenplay. Since then, his directorial efforts and ensuing filmography have expanded to include a number of interesting films including Fighting, Man Down, Empire State, The Clapper — based on his novel — Son of No One, featuring performances from Al Pacino and Ray Liotta; and Boulevard, starring Robin Williams in his final film role. In our conversation, we discussed the process of conceiving Saints and how the film was developed; being part of the New York Hardcore scene, particularly as a member the bands Major Conflict and later, Gutterboy; the influence of the Sundance Institute on his directing and writing techniques; and collaborations and friendships with Channing Tatum, Robert Downey and Tracy Morgan.Opening Credits: Jan-Michael Hökenschnieder x Fachhochschule Dortmund - Driving I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0); Lemon Knife - Girl With the Cat Eyes I Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). This week on On Story, a conversation with acclaimed writer, director, and producer James Gray to discuss not only his artistic process, but how he established himself as one the industry's most talented writer-directors.  A true visionary, Gray made his directorial debut with his celebrated film Little Odessa, which earned him nominations for both Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay at the 1994 Independent Spirit Awards. Other esteemed features in Gray's canon include The Yards, starring Joaquin Phoenix, who is in fact a frequent collaborator of Gray's, and We Own the Night, starring Mark Wahlberg, in addition to his films, Two Lovers, The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z, and Ad Astra, all of which set the bar for both screenwriting and direction.  Gray's most recent feature, Armageddon Time, is a deeply personal film inspired by Gray's childhood. A reflection on the strength of family, the complexity of friendship, and the realities of class as seen through the eyes of a young Jewish boy growing up in 1980s Queens, the film's star-studded cast includes leading actors Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway, and Jeremy Strong.  In addition to speaking with Gray on his process of writing and directing each of his seven critically-acclaimed feature films, AFF was eager to honor Gray with our coveted Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting, an annual award presented to leading storytellers within film, television and new media. Gray adds this accolade to his five Palme d'Or nominations, as well as the Silver Lion Award.  During our annual Writers Conference, Barbara Morgan sat down with Gray to discuss how he became a pillar of American filmmaking.  Ad Astra clips courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. Through the brilliant performances of its all-star cast, which includes leading actors such as Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong, Armageddon Time is a beautiful, detailed, and intimate portrait of how privilege, inequality, and prejudice are integral to the American experience. AFF was ecstatic to welcome the preeminent writer-director James Gray, not only to speak more about the film but also to honor him as the 2022 recipient of AFF's coveted Bill Wittliff Award for Screenwriting, an annual award presented to leading storytellers within film, television, and new media. Well I was involved in a project, written and directed by Diane Bell, that did just that. It won not one but two awards at Sundance. She didn't count on winning, hell she didn't think in her wildest dreams that she would even be accepted. Here's the story. In 2010, 16 feature films were selected out of 1,058 submissions to be screened in the US Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival. Diane Bell's OBSELIDIA was one of them. It was made for less than $140,000, it had no movie stars in it, and none of the cast or crew had connections to Sundance. And yet it was picked out of the slush pile, and selected to premier on this world stage, alongside movies that had cost 100 times as much with big name movie stars and recognized directors.OBSELIDIA, premiered in the US Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival 2010, where it won the Alfred P. I recently did an Instagram Live with the absolutely amazing Lena Dunham! She probably needs no introduction, but Lena was the creator, writer, and star of the HBO television series Girls from 2012 to 2017 for which she received several Emmys and two Golden Globe Awards. She also directed several episodes of Girls and became the first woman to win the Director's Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing of a Comedy Series. Prior to Girls, Lena also wrote, directed, and starred in the semi-autobiographical independent film called Tiny Furniture for which she won an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. Most recently, Lena has written a book throughout the coronavirus pandemic called Verified Strangers. It's a serialized book in which she released a chapter or two a day and even let readers who read it on Vogue.com choose what would happen to the main characters, which is really awesome. Lena also wrote the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir Not That Kind of Girl. It was a huge thrill to interview Lena (and to be fair, she also turned the tables on me a bit!) and talk about books, how writing and reading provide a sense of connection, and help make us all feel understood. Plus we both thought the other’s neighborhood growing up was way cooler. I hope you enjoy our conversation!

Kitchen Windows is a side-project of the Sunday Night Dinner podcast. In this time of Covid-19 and social isolation, it’s a chance to have a brief look into the kitchens of writers, musicians, chefs, artists and health-care superstars. What can they see out their window? What are they cooking for comfort? Who are they with? How do they spend their days? Cherien Dabis is a celebrated filmmaker, writer, actor and director. She has written and directed two feature films – AMREEKA, and MAY IN THE SUMMER. AMREEKA world-premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, opened New Director’s/New Films at the MoMA and won the coveted International Federation of Film Critics Award (FIPRESCI) in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes. It went on to win a dozen more international awards including the Humanitas Prize and Adrienne Shelly Excellence in Filmmaking Award and was nominated for a Best Picture Gotham Award, 3 Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Picture, Best First Screenplay and Best Actress and was named one of the Top Ten Independent Films of the Year by the National Board of Review. Dabis was also named one of Variety’s “Ten Directors to Watch” in 2009. AMREEKA was released theatrically worldwide and became the most-screened Arab-directed film in U.S.-cinema history, peaking at 40 screens across most major American cities. Dabis returned to Sundance with her second feature film MAY IN THE SUMMER, which opened the 2013 Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Dramatic Competition section and had its international premiere at the Venice Film Festival. In it, she makes her onscreen debut alongside Bill Pullman, Alia Shawkat and Hiam Abbass. With the screenplay, Dabis won a Sundance / Time Warner Storytelling Grant, several Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art Grants as well as the prestigious NHK International Filmmaker Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. She was one of the writers and producers of the TV series the L-WORD, and she’s directed two episodes in the third season of the Netflix series OZARK, and a number of episodes of the Hulu show, RAMY. Life After Winning Sundance with Diane BellI always talk about not counting on the "lottery ticket" mentality that so many filmmakers today count on. Winning Sundance is not a distribution plan. Sloan Award and the award for Excellence in Cinematography. It was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards 2011, including one for Best First Screenplay. It won acclaim at festivals around the world, including being named as Best of Fest at the Edinburgh Film Festival, Best Narrative Feature at Ashland Independent Film Festival, and winning the Youth Jury Prize for Best Film at the Valladolid Festival, Spain. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to be accepted and win awards at the Sundance Film Festival sit back and enjoy on conversation with Diane Bell.
