In the deregulated skies of the 1980s, airlines needed new ways to make customers feel special. Enter the first major frequent flyer program, American Airlines' AAdvantage, on 1st May, 1981. Bob Crandall built a powerful data system to track and process his customers' miles, giving American a huge head start whilst rivals scrambled to copy his idea. Suddenly, airline loyalty points weren't just for free flights — they were currency. Hotels, car rentals, and restaurant reservations got looped in, creating the foundation for today's sprawling loyalty ecosystems. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discover how much airlines lose on each ticket they give away; uncover the small regional airline that actually beat American to the frequent flyer market; and reveal how one man with a lifetime pass has flown 25 million miles… Further Reading: • ‘FARE GAMES AND THE FREQUENT FLIER' (The New York Times, 1982): https://www.nytimes.com/1982/10/17/travel/fare-games-and-the-frequent-flier.html • ‘AAdvantage Celebrates 40 Years of Loyalty Innovation' (American Airlines Newsroom, 2021): https://news.aa.com/news/news-details/2021/AAdvantage-Celebrates-40-Years-of-Loyalty-Innovation-AADV-04/default.aspx • ‘Bob Crandall and Rick Elieson chats about the history of AAdvantage and how loyalty is evolving' (Loyalty Leaders Podcast, 2021): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RZe4HCQVsw #Business #Advertising #80s #US Love the show? Zane Kerby, president and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) talks with James Shillinglaw of Insider Travel Report about last week's successful and newly renamed Travel Advisor Conference where ASTA heard that American Airlines had backed down from unilaterally implementing NDC and instituting restrictions on how passengers could earn AAdvantage frequent-flyer miles. ASTA also unveiled plans to expand its Verified Travel Advisor program for members. For more information, visit www.asta.org or www.traveladvisorconference.org. Zane Kerby, president and CEO of the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), talks with James Shillinglaw of Insider Travel Report about why ASTA just launched a campaign to get travel advisors and their clients to write letters to their congressmen objecting the American Airlines' planned change to its frequent-flyer plan that would adversely impact travel agencies. Under those changes, AA passengers would not get their AAdvantage points if they don't book through an AA “preferred” travel agency, as approved by American. American Airlines is raising the cost of checking bags and it is making other changes to push customers to buy tickets directly from the airline if they want to earn frequent-flyer points. The airline said that checking a bag on a domestic flight will rise from $30 now to $35 online and $40 if purchased at the airport. The fee for a second checked bag will rise from $40 to $45 both online and at the airport. American last raised bag fees in 2018. American, based in Fort Worth, Texas, introduced bag fees in 2008—$15 back then—to cope with the rising cost of jet fuel. Since then, they have become a steady revenue source for most major U.S. carriers. American easily led the industry by raising $1.4 billion in bag fees in 2022, the last year for which U.S. Transportation Department figures are available. The airline is also raising bag fees by $5 for short international flights including those to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean—now $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second. The airline will generally allow customers to check in at least one bag free if they hold elite status in American's loyalty program, buy a premium-class ticket or use an American-branded credit card. American will give a break to customers whose bags are slightly overweight or oversized. Instead of being hit with the full extra fee—ranging from $100 to $650—graduated fees will start at $30 for bags that are no more than 3 pounds (1.36 kg) or three linear inches over the limits. At the same time, American announced that starting with tickets issued on May 1, customers will have to buy tickets directly from the airline or its partner carriers or from preferred online travel agencies if they want to earn points in its AAdvantage loyalty program. The airline said it will list the preferred travel agencies in late April. Corporate travelers won't be affected. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

American Airlines is changing its strategy. The company is turning to smaller U.S. cities and its loyalty program to boost revenue, writes Airlines Reporter Meghna Maharishi. American Chief Commercial Officer Vasu Raja cited the Sun Belt region as a location the carrier is focusing on. The region has accounted for 75% of U.S. population growth in the past decade, according to U.S. Census data. American's focus on smaller U.S. cities lies in contrast to rivals like Delta and United, which have chosen to emphasize capacity across long-haul international routes. American is also looking to increase membership in its frequent-flier program. Roughly 65% of the company's revenue came from members of its AAdvantage program. Next, Airbnb is poised to unveil a new series of non-core services as part of its quest to become a “super brand for travel,” reports Executive Editor Dennis Schaal. Airbnb is looking to expand co-hosting, a service some homeowners use to manage their listings if they don't want to do it themselves or don't live locally. Chief Financial Officer Ellie Mertz also said Airbnb is studying how to use artificial intelligence to solve both guest and host issues. Schaal notes Airbnb hosts have complained at times about the quality of support coming from the company. Airbnb is planning to resurrect its dormant experiences product. However, Mertz didn't provide any details about what it might include. Finally, Turkish Airlines has recently launched service to Australia, a development that could concern Qantas, writes Airlines Editor Gordon Smith. Smith notes that Turkish Airlines' three times a week service via Singapore isn't a major threat to Qantas in itself. But he writes the Singapore aspect of the new Turkish Airlines route treads on Qantas' toes. It allows the airlines to drop off and pick up passengers in Singapore when flying between Istanbul and Australia. The Australian government approved an increase in the number of weekly services to and from Turkey last December.

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by The BG AD Group. Today is Wednesday, January 10th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. American Airlines makes surprising change affecting passengers American Airlines has announced surprising changes that will impact passengers in 2024. The airline is set to revamp its AAdvantage loyalty program, offering more benefits to its members and enhancing the overall travel experience. The new developments, set to begin on March 1, 2024, come as a response to a competitive scramble among airlines to attract loyal customers following a controversial decision by Delta Air Lines to scale back passenger access to its SkyMiles airport lounges in late 2023. American Airlines is also introducing new ways for travelers to use AAdvantage miles. Once members reach AAdvantage Platinum Pro status, they can redeem miles for Flagship First Dining passes and upgrades with select airline partners. Later in 2024, the airline will offer more exclusive benefits such as free same-day standby for earlier domestic flights, extended trip credit, Admirals Club One-Day Passes, Flagship Lounge Single Visit Passes, and the ability to put flights on hold free of charge for up to 24 hours. Furthermore, American Airlines will be changing its cancellation policy. Starting later this month, AAdvantage members will have the ability to cancel non-refundable Basic Economy tickets and receive a partial trip credit for a fee. Today, Let's Talk Loyalty welcomes back an iconic airline brand that is long overdue a return visit to our show. American Airlines first joined us in April 2020 to share how they were thinking about their loyal customers and the role of the AAdvantage program in those first early days of the Covid pandemic. Now, three years on, we revisit this iconic program – which is in fact the longest-running computerised or travel loyalty program in the world. AAdvantage was established in 1981 with a laser focus on rewarding frequent flyers on American Airlines. Today, the program has more than 100 million members and has evolved dramatically. AAdvantage no longer considers itself a frequent flyer program, but instead a travel rewards program, and now they are once again leading the industry, with new ways for members to earn and keep their status in return for any of their loyalty within the Advantage eco-system.! To hear the full story, I'm thrilled to be joined today by Chris Isaac, Director of AAdvantage, to hear how Covid ironically created new insights for him and his team on just how loyal their members were being – even when they were unable to fly! Listen to enjoy the latest insights from AAdvantage. Show Notes: 1) Chris Isaac, Director of AAdvantage 2) American Airlines 3) AAdvantage

Episode Notes American Airlines has seen the rise in blended travel upend its business. Not only are travelers who combine work and leisure trips driving changes in its strategy, the segment is also emerging as one of the company's most lucrative areas, reports Edward Russell, editor of Airline Weekly, a Skift publication. American said during its first-quarter earnings call on Thursday that this mashup of blended travel represents 35 percent of the company's bookings. Russell adds those same travelers are also behind the significant growth in its loyalty program, AAdvantage. In addition, Russell notes blended travelers' demand for more control over their trips drove American in part to implement distributing its products to travel agencies through the so-called New Distribution Capability, a technology that gives airlines more power over their content. American generated roughly $12 billion in revenue during the first quarter, a 37 percent year-over-year jump. We turn next to Fiji's new tourism campaign. The South Pacific nation is showcasing happiness as a way of life for its citizens instead of a trait reserved for tourists, reports Asia Editor Peden Doma Bhutia. Bhutia writes Fiji leverages a happiness vibe to pay tribute to its citizens, culture and natural environment in its “Where Happiness Comes Naturally” advertising campaign. Tourism Fiji's outgoing Chief Marketing Officer Emma Campbell said happiness lives within Fiji's people, regardless of whether tourists are around. That tone represents a shift from a previous Fiji tourism campaign, which Butia writes was heavily criticized for perpetuating stereotypes about the country being a happy brown paradise. That marketing effort featured Australian Rebel Wilson. Campbell said the “Where Happiness Come Naturally” campaign felt like a natural evolution to tell Fiji's story from the perspective of its citizens. She added that resilience and a strong sense of community helped Fiji survive the pandemic. Finally, Wyndham executives don't see the ongoing U.S. banking crisis damaging its hotel pipeline, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. Wyndham, the world's largest hotel franchisor, said during an earnings call on Thursday that it wasn't worried about March's collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, which contributed to a tightening of lending in the U.S. Chief Financial Officer Michele Allen said the company is optimistic about its 2023 financing situation, adding the company believes there's a significant amount of capital still available. Wyndham executives also argued many of its franchised hotels have long-standing relationships with regional banks. Wyndham generated roughly $67 million of net income during the first quarter. The company also saw its global revenue per available room, a key industry metric, rise 11 percent compared to 2019 levels.

American Airlines rolled out a massive change to their loyalty program last year. Gone were many older elements of earning status and benefits, replaced by Loyalty Points. They've also begun tweaking the program, with some recent changes just announced. Richard and I dedicate an episode to a deep dive on the new AAdvantage program and how to earn Loyalty Points. American Airlines clearly is not a player-hater: the newly revamped AAdvantage Loyalty Points program seems to be designed with an eye toward gamification. Gone are the days when George Clooney's character from Up in the Air was the ideal of an airline's best customer because this new program values those of us who earn miles without flying. In our first episode of the 2022 season, American Airlines vice president of global sales Kyle Mabry joins the Folo from American’s Skyview headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. He and Travel Weekly aviation editor Robert Silk have a robust discussion about the omicron recovery, pent-up demand in business and leisure travel, changes to the AAdvantage loyalty program, distribution and NDC updates, the quest for “seamless travel" and the transition from American CEO Doug Parker to Robert Isom, which happens at the end of March. The episode was recorded Tuesday, Jan. 25 and has been edited for length and clarity. The day before the recording, the U.K. announced a loosening of some entry regulations, including dropping testing requirements for vaccinated travelers, which is referenced in the recording. A quick note from American regarding our discussion about rebounds in travel: it recorded a recovery of about 80% for travel from small and medium-sized businesses, higher than the 60% figure Mabry said in the conversation. Founded in 1981, the AAdvantage program is one of the world's first and biggest loyalty programs. In early 2020, I interviewed Bridget Blaise-Shamai, then President of the AAdvantage program, and discovered the original strategic idea behind the program, some of it's most fascinating insights and how American Airlines was adapting to perhaps the most challenging time in its history. This short summary show captures just some of what I learnt from this extra-ordinary success story, so listen to learn how a laser focus on customers can create extra-ordinary loyalty, even in this most competitive sector. NowBoarding, your daily travel news in 7 minutes or less. If you haven’t heard, I’ll be bringing you travel news 5 days a week, Monday through Friday going forward. The best travel deals don’t wait for our weekly episodes. I hear from so many of you that you miss the best deals. Now, you’ll have the opportunity to wake up with travel news, except the weekends where I’ll sleep in just a little bit. Look for links to all of today’s stories in the show notes on whatever podcast platform you’re listening. And, please share the show with a friend! First up today is a cautionary tale on AirBnb. Look, I’ve never stayed at one, so I speak from the voice of inexperience. But, AirBnb still gives me some pause over a standard hotel. Point Me to The Plane details a handful of points to think about before you book AirBnb. Hidden fees, security and coordinating with your host can all be a pain. We were in Lisbon with some friends this summer. They ended up booking an AirBnb for the short stay. Unfortunately, they found out pretty late in the process that they’d need to pick up the keys to their AirBnb about 30 minutes across town. With 3 kids and luggage, that made for an interesting afternoon. Uber has some holiday goodies if you’re flying over the next month or so. You can earn a $25 credit to try out their new Uber Comfort product if you’re flying out of select airports during the holidays. And, they have their own temporary airport lounge setup at Chicago O-Hare in Terminal 2. Check it out! A new program from American Airlines is bringing extra miles to many travelers. If you’re a member of their AAdvantage program and hold an American Airlines credit card, you’re eligible to sign up for SimplyMiles. And, finally, Marriott has some targeted promotions for their members. These sorts of promotions usually don’t get the same sort of notification as the systemwide promos. They’re kind of hidden in a separate section of your Marriott account. So, you could be eligible and not even know. These promotions seem to stretch over the holiday season. So, whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, take a look at this post from One Mile at a Time to figure out if you’ve been targeted. That’s a full wrap on today’s travel news. I hope you guys will let me know what you think of the new show format. It’s going to be a lot of work to put together a daily show, but I’m committed to it if everyone finds it valuable. If you’ve got a piece of travel news that you think I should feature on NowBoarding, you can e-mail me at ed@pizzainmotion.com, or find me on social media, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. And, you can find me blogging daily at pizzainmotion.com Since this is a new show format, you can do me a big favor and leave me a review on whatever podcast platform you’re listening to. Reviews and ratings are a huge part of what helps us reach a larger audience. And, if you’re enjoying the show, please tell a friend. That’s your travel news in 7 minutes or less. I hope you’ll join us again on a future flight!
