Live from backstage at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, we chat with Rachel Bomeli, Vice President of Facility Operations for the facility. We join Rachel the morning after a big show the previous night and learn all about this truly unique venue which features a wide array of architectural styles. We talk about the design of the theatre, their early plans as the venue approaches its centennial in five years, and how theaters often provide interesting perspective in venue stewardship and preservation. We learn how Rachel got her start in live events – from an interest in the industry during her time at Michigan State to a spontaneous move south with a friend that led to a job with Broadway Across America. We talk about her time at Fox Theatre and how her role has developed over the years, allowing for professional growth and exciting challenges. We talk about the city of Atlanta, where the Event & Venue Marketing Conference will be in 2025, and its place in the live event landscape with its numerous venues. Please Note – Stick around to the end of the episode to hear some audio of Rachel touring us around the venue as we discuss: different rooms, the recent Andre 3000 show, beautiful plaster molding, a hidden porch overlooking Ponce De Leon Ave, and lastly a visit to their VERY impressive climate-controlled archive room. As they say, “Atlanta Influences Everything” and it's easy to see why.Rachel Bomeli: Instagram | LinkedInFox Theatre (Atlanta): Facebook | Instagram | X/Twitter ––––––ADVENTURES IN VENUELANDFollow on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, or X/TwitterLearn more about Event & Venue Marketing ConferenceMeet our team:Paul Hooper | Co-host, Booking, Branding & MarketingDave Redelberger | Co-host & Guest ResearchMegan Ebeck | Marketing, Design & Digital AdvertisingSamantha Marker | Marketing, Copywriting & PublicityCamille Faulkner | Audio Editing & MixingHave a suggestion for a guest or bonus episode? Broadway Across America, a national, privately-owned company, manages broadway touring shows in 48 American cities.  For Indianapolis, and Salt Lake, the group sales manager is Chris Schneider, who describes differences between cities both in culture and marketing.  An example of differences is Book of Mormon, which performs five to ten minutes longer in Salt Lake than elsewhere because "laugh times" are longer there.  Some towns support lesser-known plays and shows, while others require well-known traditional presentations.

In this episode, we interview Jack Hopewell, who stars as Jesus Christ in the 50th Anniversary Tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. When Jesus Christ Superstar came out 50 years ago, it was controversial: the musical doesn't depict the resurrection, it's sympathetic to Judas, it takes the position of predestination (Judas was required to betray Jesus). While the controversy has died down in the last 50 years, some audience members still get their feathers ruffled. Jack Hopewell speaks with us about his Roman Catholic upbringing, how he brings humanity to the character of Jesus Christ, and the physical and mental toll of performing the Passion eight times a week. Jack also gives us an insider's look at how such an emotional and physical production is done consistently and impressively in theatres all across North America. Katie (our resident atheist and Broadway nerd) considers Jesus Christ Superstar to be one of her favourite musicals. What makes this musical accessible to religious and non-religious alike?Whether you're interested in theology or in a behind-the-scenes peek at what it's like to be part of a major Broadway tour, this is an interview you don't want to miss. You can watch the uncut video of this interview on YouTubeSupport us at Patreon and SpreadshirtJoin the Community on DiscordLearn more great religion facts on Facebook and Instagram Find Jack Hopewell on Instagram , YouTube, and his official websiteCheck out Jesus Christ Superstar on Instagram, YouTube, and their official website

Ana Flavia Zuim is a multi-award winning musical director and conductor, musician and associate director of vocal performance at NYU. Her credits include the likes of associate conductor and vocal coach for Billy Elliot tours in the USA and the rehearsal pianist for Hamilton on Broadway. Anna joins Alexa this week on Singing Teachers Talk to discuss her work as a researcher in the field of forensic voice analysis.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Anna's published paper on the voice started because she noticed there's not a lot of research on contemporary styles of vocalism that gives an indication of how much is too much. The original intent was to have both the measurements for an opera and a contemporary show and compare the two.  About 3 or 4 years ago Anna visited colleagues at Harvard and discussed the KayPENTAX APM 3200, a pretty rare device that they don't make anymore. They decided to let her borrow it to collect data for her study.  With this device they decided to measure the effect on three male identifying voices and three female identifying, this was made up of a major role, minor role, and ensemble for each. They measured separate phases of the show from learning lines to the show day.  From the study Anna and the team found that the distance dose, how many cycles the vocal folds go through but converted to distance, was different between males and females. Female identifying singers sang approximately 3.23 miles per day and the male identifying singers about 2.34 miles.  Anna believes we need to change the stigma around vocal injuries, singers feel like they need to push through and are reluctant to get help because of the culture in the theatre. Shows have physical therapists of masseuse for physical injuries, but don't have a vocal specialist.    BEST MOMENTS ‘It was fascinating because it gave us an idea on the demands on the voice of preparing for a show'  ‘I don't know if educating will change critics'  ‘The stimaga about voice and voice injury is real'    EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training    Guest Website: www.anaflaviazuim.com   Social Media: @anaflaviazuim   Relevant Links & Mentions:  Journal of Voice: www.jvoice.org Vocal Dose and Vocal Demands in Contemporary Musical Theatre by Ana Flavia Zuim, Celia F Stewart & Ingo R Titze: https://www.jvoice.org/article/S0892-1997(21)00278-2/ppt Studied Productions: The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart & Wonderland by Frank Wildhorn & Jack Murphy Maurice E Goodwin SLP Vocal Health Education  Example: Astonishing from Little Women by Sutton Foster  Ben Platt and Dear Evan Hansen Matt Edwards and the Asbury Park Press (Jon Bon Jovi vocal issues: What is going on and how can it be fixed?): https://eu.app.com/story/entertainment/music/2022/05/09/jon-bon-jovi-voice-vocal-issues-bad-singing/9661274002/ ABOUT THE GUEST  Ana Flavia Zuim is a multi award-winner musical director/conductor and an accomplished pianist, vocologist, electric bassist and expert witness. Russ Belin, vice president of the Southeast region for Broadway Across America, joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum podcast to discuss the pandemic's effects on the theater industry and this year's exciting season at the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Belin joins hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick for the Around Atlanta segment. Celebrating 40 years in the peach state, Broadway Across America is back in our beautiful city for a highly anticipated season of shows. Broadway Across America has 47 markets in the U.S. and presents the best of Broadway direct from New York. Acting as a middleman, Belin and his team handle subscriptions, marketing and present shows featured at the Fox Theatre. Broadway Across America works with producers to build out incredible displays for patrons to enjoy, typically bringing 10 to 12 shows per season. According to Belin, the past 18 months were tough for performers and patrons alike as the theater industry largely depends on the revenue from live shows. “It's been 550 days since we presented our last show,” Belin said. “Our job is to bring people together to make memories. It's been weird to not have that feeling.” The theater industry and Broadway Across America underwent many changes attempting to build seasons and reroute shows as pandemic conditions worsened. The main focus was to reschedule shows and plan and manage ticket subscriptions to ensure an easy return once it was safe to do so. According to Belin, it was amazing to see the support and excitement from season ticket holders during such a difficult time and how thankful his team was for the continued support. In residence until September 26, 2021, Hamilton is the first show to return to the Fox Theatre since its March 2020 closing. Belin expressed gratitude that a big show like Hamilton is the season debut after a turbulent previous year. Operating safely, about 4,500 patrons per show enjoy the magic of Broadway in person once again. Written by Tony-award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton is the story of Alexander Hamilton, a young immigrant from the Caribbean, and his journey to the United States. Working in tandem with acclaimed historical figures, such as Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, Hamilton built the U.S. treasury, as well as other developments, to make our newly formed country successful. Told uniquely and powerfully, Hamilton implements hip-hop, dance and expressive music to tell the story based on the biography by author Rob Chernow. Although Disney+ released the professional recording of the original cast of Hamilton during the height of the pandemic, it motivates many viewers to see the show live. Releasing shows on digital platforms allows for larger audiences to access the brilliance of Broadway. However, nothing compares to seeing a show in person! Although the current cast of Hamilton is not the original, it is a talented group of professionals, including a few Atlanta natives, that are passionate about delivering this show to audiences. This season marks 40 years of Broadway in Atlanta and will feature highlights such as Fiddler on the Roof, Disney's Frozen, Ain't Too Proud, Mean Girls and more!  “I'm excited that we're going to help the Fox doors reopen and get our audiences back there,” Belin said. Fiddler on the Roof is a great show to bring family and first-time theatergoers, winning multiple Tony Awards on its original run and the revival. Ain't Too Pride celebrates the career of The Temptations on their journey from Motown to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with well-known hits and a night filled with nostalgic fun. Disney's Frozen is a much-anticipated debut at the Fox Theatre and a great opportunity for families to experience the magic of Disney up close.
