This episode features an insightful conversation with Brynn Cooksey, an experienced HVAC contractor and trainer from Southeast Michigan. Brynn shares his expertise in conducting proper load calculations, sizing the equipment correctly, improving duct design, and addressing common issues contractors face. Brynn emphasizes the importance of performing accurate load calculations, especially in older housing stock where equipment is frequently oversized by 50% or more. He discusses how oversized equipment leads to short cycling, poor efficiency, and increased utility costs for homeowners. His approach involves educating customers by involving them in the measurement process and using metrics like "duct deficiency" to demonstrate the inefficiencies of their current systems. The discussion then shifts to heat pumps and the unique challenges of implementing them in cold climates like Michigan. Brynn advocates for a "dual fuel" approach, utilizing heat pumps for efficiency while supplementing with gas heat during extremely cold temperatures. He stresses the necessity of a tight, well-insulated thermal envelope and proper duct design to ensure optimal heat pump performance. Topics covered include: Conducting blower door tests for accurate load calculations Downsizing equipment and solving duct issues in retrofit applications The "duct deficiency" metric for demonstrating system inefficiencies Aeroseal duct sealing: benefits, limitations, and proper application Identifying and addressing cracked heat exchangers due to airflow issues Training sales teams on a hands-on, educational sales process The importance of building science education for contractors Overcoming hesitancy in trusting load calculation results Brynn encourages contractors to embrace building science principles, trust the load calculation process, and focus on system design rather than simply swapping out equipment. By proving these methods to themselves, contractors can transform their businesses and deliver true value to customers through improved comfort, efficiency, and cost savings. Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
In this episode of the podcast hosts Eric Kaiser and Bill Spohn welcomed Amit Gupta from AeroSeal, a company specializing in duct sealing technology. Amit shared the backstory of AeroSeal, which was originally founded based on technology invented by Dr. Mark Modera at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The technology struggled to gain traction under its initial ownership by Carrier, leading Amit, who was working at Carrier post-MBA, to see the potential for significant energy efficiency improvements in homes through duct sealing. Amit's passion for the technology led to the acquisition and reboot of AeroSeal as an independent company in 2010, focusing on sealing ducts, building envelopes, and potentially underground gas pipelines to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste. AeroSeal's technology addresses the inefficiency and energy loss in buildings by sealing air ducts and envelopes with a patented process that injects micron-sized particles to seal leaks from the inside. This approach is likened to a "fix-a-flat" for buildings, aiming to significantly reduce energy waste and contribute to the net-zero energy building goal. Amit highlighted the vast potential impact of their technology, noting that buildings contribute to a significant portion of CO2 emissions and energy consumption, primarily through heating and cooling. By improving the sealing of ducts and envelopes, AeroSeal aims to address this inefficiency systematically, offering a solution for both new construction and existing buildings. The conversation also touched on the challenges and opportunities in promoting AeroSeal's technology. Amit discussed the common acceptance of inefficient HVAC systems by homeowners and the industry's gradual shift towards recognizing the importance of energy efficiency and indoor air quality. The technology's application ranges from residential homes to iconic commercial buildings, demonstrating its scalability and effectiveness. Amit emphasized the importance of action and awareness in adopting such technologies to make a tangible impact on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. This episode was recorded in January 2024.

Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
Zac Reed, Product manager at Aeroseal, joins us today to share the technology, history and applications for Aeroseal products. Aeroseal was developed in Dr. Mark Modera's California garage in 1993. For the first time ever, it was possible to seal leaks and holes in air ducts from the inside out. Up until that time, the only way to seal ductwork was messy, labor intensive, and not an option for most homeowners. The simplest explanation for the Aeroseal process is fix-a-flat for homes: both ducts and the home structure. Aeroseal's mission is to help homeowners retain their “expensive air”: which delivers comfort, healthy air, and substantial energy savings. Contractor's interested in getting trained and becoming Aeroseal dealers can learn more about this and the products at www.Aeroseal.com Learn more on Aeroseal's YouTube channel: YouTube Zac's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/zac-reed-060a46225/ This episode was recorded in May 2023.

Jarrod and Alex discuss the Aeroseal system to seal your ductwork.
You may have heard about a service called Aeroseal, which is designed to cover cracks and gaps in your heating and cooling system's ductwork. But does it really work? That's what Evelyn, in Washington, is wondering. She recently learned that her air ducts have dust, and an HVAC professional suggested trying this product. Ductwork maintenance is an ongoing issue for homeowners. On average, 20 to 30 percent of the air in the average home leaks from the ducts. That means air is not reaching the rooms it's supposed to reach, which isn't very energy efficient. Usually, air ducts are insulated but the joints aren't sealed. Take a look at your ductwork; you might be surprised to see insulation being blown away. All joints should be sealed with mastic or tape. Aeroseal is one way to deal with cracks and gaps in your HVAC ductwork. But does it really work? Here are our thoughts, along with much more, on The Today's Homeowner Podcast.

Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
Bryan Barnes of Aeroseal, LLC joins us today to discuss two revolutionary technologies that greatly impact Building Performance: AeroSeal for sealing ducts from the inside out and AeroBarrier for sealing a building enclosure in the same manner. We hear about the science behind Aeroseal and the dramatic performance increases in comfort, energy and the health of the environment. Their smart-liquid sealant turns into an aerosol in their machine and actual finds and seals holes and gaps up to ⅝” in stated performance, yet larger holes have been sealed. If you’re an HVAC contractor, consider AeroSeal to make you customers more comfortable with far less time & labor in duct sealing in retrofit work allowing you to reach buried ducts. It’s also a time saver in new construction duct sealing, too. If you’re a builder, consider what AeroBarrier can do minimize the air changes of the envelope you are building to meet and exceed any existing or anticipated energy codes. If you are interested in learning more, or becoming a dealer of these highly differentiating products, go to www.AeroSeal.com or www.AeroBarrier.com or email our guest Bryan at Bryan.Barnes@AeroSeal.com

You’ll learn about the many Aeroseal and CI training videos and classes available to deepen your team’s understanding of the “why” behind duct sealing.
