In this episode of Supply Chain Now, hosts Scott W. Luton and Deborah Dull welcome Will Mansard and Ahmed Arif of Bastian Solutions for a practical, field-tested conversation on retrofitting brownfield warehouses and the real cost of doing nothing. They frame retrofits as logistical projects first, unpack why so much existing space goes underutilized, and share how to minimize disruption while upgrading live operations. They discuss the playbook that works in the real world: start with discovery and reverse engineering when documentation is thin, build a phased mechanical plan, sequence electrical with quick-connect, preassembled components, and treat controls and software as the heart of the system using emulation and thorough testing. With rules one and two both being “get orders out the door,” they stress contingency planning, speaking the customer's language, and orchestrating equipment, controls, and software to avoid faults and bottlenecks.
The energy inefficiency in our homes is one of the biggest barriers to meeting our climate targets. Heating and electricity make up a huge portion of our greenhouse gas emissions, and those emissions are rising. At the same time, millions of people live in housing that's drafty, expensive to heat, unhealthy, or even unsafe. Could retrofitting homes at scale be a climate solution that also improves health, lowers energy costs, and promotes housing justice? We spoke with Abhi Kantamneni, the Director of Action Research with Efficiency Canada, an organization that studies the technology, governance, and business systems influencing Canada's energy future. Abhi has a decade of experience helping communities across US and Canada use clean and efficient energy to achieve local priorities including improving housing, increasing ‘good jobs' and reducing poverty. In this conversation, Abhi highlights how much energy is wasted in our homes — often without us realizing. From drafty windows to aging heating systems, many people only make upgrades when something breaks, often in moments of crisis. Abhi makes the case for a coordinated, government-led retrofit strategy that supports renters and homeowners alike — not just to reduce emissions, but to lower energy bills, improve health, and address poverty through climate action. The same thing with the heat dome and with COVID. These events over the last seven to eight years have reshaped how I think and approach design and architecture, and now my focus is on resilience." — Mike Fowler"If you touch any one single component, make sure you go all the way. That's the only way you're going to future-proof your building and have a long-lasting carbon emission impact." — Jessica Grove-Smith"It's very clear that what typologies get built follow where there's grant money. Developers are happy to build anything as long as it comes with a little extra funding—that's a powerful lever we can use to shape the built environment." — Rainger Pinney"In Passive House buildings, humidity changes very slowly. That just observation applies in any climate—you're less affected because the air isn't running through your building like it does in most buildings." — Galen Staengl"We should be retrofitting schools rather than demolishing them. Roofs, windows, and wall cladding can be replaced; we don't need to demolish the whole school to make it better." — Nidhi ShahThe Reimagine Edit is a special series of the Passive House Podcast that shares curated insights from our Experts-In-Residence at the Reimagine Buildings Collective, our membership community of building professionals stepping up to tackle climate change. Final Fantasy 7 wasn't just a game release. It was the changing of an era. The moment when the franchise grew from fun games to media events. As a result, the marketing for FF7 reached unheard of levels for videogames at the time. And with the marketing came, unprecedented hype. On this episode of A Gamer Looks at 40, we share stories of what it was like to be knee deep in the late 90's media barrage and how this full court press shaped our perceptions of the game before we even hit the first loading screen. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) published details on the 38,000 home energy upgrades supported through Government funded grant schemes in the first nine months of 2024. This represents an increase of 11% on the number of upgrades for the same period last year, showing continued momentum in home retrofitting. Government expenditure across all schemes reached €279 million, up 34% year on year. Of the homes upgraded, 5,255 were energy-poor homes which benefitted from totally free energy upgrades. The headline outcomes during the first nine months of 2024, across all schemes administered by SEAI, were: 48,300 applications processed across all schemes, up 3% over the same period in 2023. 38,000 property upgrades were completed, up 11% over the same period in 2023. Over 15,000 homes were upgraded to a BER B2 or higher, up 24% over the same period in 2023. Over 5,255 upgrades for energy poverty qualifying households, up 26% on the same period in 2023. Expenditure across all schemes was €279 million, up 34% on the same period in 2023. Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD said: "Our retrofitting programme continues to expand which means that more and more people are waking up in warmer, more efficient and healthier homes every year. While we often talk ourselves down in Ireland, when I tell other energy and climate Ministers across Europe about our robust retrofitting rates, they are amazed at the percentage of homes we are reaching, year on year. We cannot be complacent, however, and we have to keep pushing on, particularly with our programme of free retrofitting for low income and energy poor homes. We must ensure that everyone can benefit from the clean, green energy solutions that are available." Dr Ciaran Byrne, Director of National Retrofit at SEAI said: "As has been the case for some time now solar PV is proving a very attractive technology for homeowners. And while application levels in some of the schemes have been somewhat flat in the most recent quarter, there has also been a general uplift in application levels towards the end of the quarter and into Q4. This is likely because during the summer months homeowners focus is often elsewhere. It is only when the colder weather arrives that homeowners focus tends to return to retrofit. "The Government, Department of Environment, Climate and Communications and SEAI have taken several actions during 2024 designed to increase homeowner demand and supply chain participation. These include: a new phase of SEAI's multi-annual marketing and communications campaign, new supports for homeowners availing of the Enhanced Defective Concrete Blocks Scheme, and a new training incentive for heat pump installers. Dr Byrne continued: "Several scheme developments are likely to drive interest and participation in both the short and medium term. These include the support scheme for homeowners affected by Defective Concrete Blocks launched in September and the low interest Home Energy Upgrade Loan Scheme with more institutions due to sign up in the coming months. We are also excited about the traditional buildings pilot programme launched in October, which will provide vital evidence and data which will hopefully unlock access to grants for these typically harder to treat homes". Trevor Smith with Ecosystem joins us in this episode to talk about managing large retrofits in occupied buildings.Find knowledge for the dynamic world of real estate management at irem.org.
What is electric vehicle (EV) retrofitting and why does it matter? ‘EV retrofitting' refers to the process of converting a gas-powered vehicle into an electric vehicle by replacing its gas engine with a battery pack. The battery pack is designed to fit within the vehicle's chassis—the structural frame to which its wheels, suspension, engine, and other components are attached. Typically, the battery pack fits in the space previously occupied by the gas engine and fuel tank; the available space generally varies by vehicle make and model. The battery's size and weight depend on the vehicle being retrofitted, as well as the desired range and performance. Despite these constraints, mass-producing battery packs for retrofitting a specific type of vehicle chassis with an electric powertrain is possible. Using a standard-sized battery allows for high-volume retrofits of vehicles with a compatible chassis, which can lower costs and reduce the time required for the retrofit process. Policies promoting the adoption of new EVs, such as California's Advanced Clean Cars II, can help increase the number of new EVs on the road. However, they do not address the existing vehicle fleet of gas-powered vehicles that continue to emit greenhouse gases and air pollutants. On average, these vehicles stay on the road for about 12 years in the US, and may be used even longer in low and middle income countries. Gas powered vehicles' slow replacement rate delays the increase in the percentage of EVs on the road. Retrofitting's supporters say a comprehensive approach to electrifying transportation that includes strategies for retrofitting existing gas-powered vehicles can help address the lag, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where the upfront cost of new EVs present a larger barrier to adoption. What does Shift EV do, and who is Aly El Tayeb? Shift EV is an Egypt-based company that specializes in retrofitting commercial fleets with electric powertrains. It focuses on vehicles that travel relatively short and predictable routes and return to a home base at night for charging. To make electric transportation more accessible and feasible in middle-income and emerging economies, such as Egypt, the company has adopted a strategy of retrofitting the most popular vehicle models already on the road. Dr. El Tayeb, the co-founder and CEO of Shift EV, is a chemical engineer with previous experience at a battery startup in the United States. He founded the company in response to the lack of accessible EV options in middle-income and emerging economies, such as Egypt. In this episode of the Passive House Podcast co-host Zack Semke speaks with Tim McDonald of Onion Flats Architecture on the heels of Tim's involvement in the Reimagine Building PREFAB conference. Tim discusses his firm's current portfolio of passive deep energy retrofit projects and shares his growing realization that we need to fundamentally rethink our understanding of the economics of retrofits. Compared to building new, saving buildings is cheap! To prove the point, he walks us through the Mayweather Apartments project near Boston.https://www.onionflats.com/https://www.poah.org/https://haycon-inc.com/https://www.facadesx.com/https://rmi.org/our-work/buildings/realize/https://collectivecarpentry.com/https://quantumpassivhaus.com/https://www.reframe.systems/Thank you for listening to the Passive House Podcast!
