Welcome to the first official “Ask The Experts” edition of Build. Matt answers real questions from builders, architects, and fans of the show. This episode covers a wide range of high-performance building topics that every pro should consider. First, Matt breaks down unvented attic assemblies in LA's dry climate, offering insulation recommendations and best practices for staying code-compliant without overcomplicating the build. Then, he dives into the hot topic of venting dryers in airtight homes—exploring options like heat pump dryers and makeup air systems.Next up, a thoughtful discussion on HVAC design in energy-efficient, all-electric homes, especially when working with contractors who size systems by square footage instead of proper Manual J calculations. Matt shares practical advice for builders working in high desert climates and explains the value of multi-stage and VRF equipment. Finally, he addresses one of the most overlooked but crucial areas of waterproofing: sill pans. From stainless steel to PVC, Matt discusses materials, back dam design, and how to prevent rust or water intrusion under doors.Have a question for Matt (or any of the Build Experts)? HVAC School - For Techs, By Techs

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2025 8:45

In this short podcast episode, Roman Baugh takes over the HVAC School podcast to answer a listener-submitted question about VRF (or VRV) system evacuation. Evacuation is a critical step of making repairs on VRF systems, which are very diverse and versatile but require a high level of understanding. VRF systems have multiple indoor units per outdoor unit, and they achieve that with the help of several components and accessories down the refrigerant line that can pose issues in evacuation and pressure testing. In heat recovery units, some manufacturers use solenoid valves (or even electronic expansion valves) in branch selector boxes or branch collector boxes. These valves act as little traffic guards, and the system needs to be put in its refrigerant recovery or vacuuming mode. If not, then you won't be able to evacuate all of the refrigerant and non-condensables from the system. Even if the system passes a decay test, contamination is a major concern when the system starts up and the valves open (due to nitrogen and oxygen mixing with pure refrigerant being put into the system). You can trust and verify that the system is in its proper operating mode at the thermostat to ensure that the valves are open 100% and ready for evacuation or pressure testing. Failure to do so not only poses a contamination risk but likely won't maintain its pressure during the pressure test. Assumption or trust alone is not enough. Heat pumps only have two lines, and the vacuum pulls from both sides of the valve. There's less of an issue because there are no branch selector or collector boxes, but it's still good to ensure that the valves are responding and communicating.    Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Rhydon and Dennis enjoy a great episode filled with good times and technical difficulties from the beginning to the end. All the headaches worked to highlight what became the main focus of the show, which morphed into a discussion about the rapid pace of technological advancement hampering the development of person to person communication in the trades and in everyday life. The two conversed about the importance of eye contact, a quality handshake and body language when talking with homeowners and fellow tradespeople. They also discussed some of the short falls that they are both seeing in everyday life in regards to the same thing. They also closed the show with a great "Crawlspace Confession," and a surprise cameo! #HVAC #HVACCREW #HVACR #HVACRND #TRADECREW #AC #AIRCONDITIONING #AIRHANDLER #ATTIC #BOILER #BUSINESS #BUSINESSDEVELOPMENT #COIL #COLD #COMBIBOILER #COMEDY #CONSTRUCTION #CONTRACTOR #CRAWLSPACE #DRYBULB #DUCT #DUCTLESS #DUCTWORK #EEV #ELECTRICAL #EPISODE #EQUIPMENT #ERV #FANCOIL #FLEX #FURNACE #GASFURNACE #HEAT #HEATPUMP #HP #HRV #INVERTER #MINISPLIT #MULTIFAMILY #NEWEPISODE #NEWPRODUCT #NEWS #NEWSHOW #PODCAST #PLUMBING #RNC #SHEETMETAL #TANKLESS #TANKLESSWATERHEATER #TECHNICIAN #TECHREP #TRADE #TRADES #TRAINING #TXV #VARIABLESPEED #WATERHEATER #WETBULB    Air balancing, Air conditioning, Air curtains, Air filtration systems, Air handlers, BAS, BMS, Building automation systems, Building energy modeling for HVAC, Business, Business Development, Cased Coils, Coils, Commercial refrigeration, Compressors, Condensers, Consulting, Cooling systems, Cooling tower systems, Dehumidification systems, Duct cleaning, Ductless mini-split systems, Ductwork design, EEV, Electrical, Electronic Expansion Valve, Energy efficiency, Energy efficiency in HVAC, Energy, management software, Energy management systems, Energy-efficient HVAC technologies, Energy-saving tips for HVAC, ERV, Evaporative coils, Evaporative condensers, Evaporative, cooling systems, Evaporators, Geothermal HVAC systems, Green building HVAC solutions, Heat exchangers, Heat load calculation, Heat pump maintenance, Heat pumps, Heat recovery, systems, Heat recovery ventilation, Heat transfer in HVAC, Heating systems, High-efficiency, furnaces, Hot Gas Bypass, Hot Surface Ignition, Hot Water, HRV, HVAC, HVAC airflow, measurement, HVAC controls and thermostats, HVAC industry trends, HVAC installation guide, HVAC maintenance tips, HVAC repair techniques, HVAC retrofitting, HVAC system airflow, balancing, HVAC system automation, HVAC system balancing, HVAC system commissioning, HVAC system components, HVAC system control strategies, HVAC system controls, HVAC, system controls integration, HVAC system design software, HVAC system energy audits, HVAC, system integration, HVAC system life cycle cost analysis, HVAC system noise reduction, HVAC, system optimization, HVAC system preventive maintenance, HVAC system programming, HVAC, system reliability, HVAC system troubleshooting guide, HVAC system upgrades, HVAC, system zoning, HVAC training, Hydronic heating systems, IAQ, IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) testing, IAQ monitoring devices, Indoor air purification, Indoor air quality, Inverter, Inverter Compressor, Inverter Equipment, Load calculation in HVAC, Plumbing, Radiant heating and cooling systems, Refrigerant leak detection, Refrigerant recovery and recycling, Refrigerant types, Refrigeration, Refrigeration cycle, Refrigeration principles, Refrigeration system maintenance, Refrigeration, system retrofits, Refrigeration system troubleshooting, Reheat, Reheat System, Residential Air, Conditioning, Residential Cooling, Residential Equipment, Residential Heating, Residential, HVAC solutions, Residential New Construction, RNC, Smart thermostats, Tankless, Tankless, Water Heater, Territory Manager, Thermal Expansion Valve, Thermal insulation in HVAC, Troubleshooting HVAC, issues, TXV, Variable frequency drives (VFDs), Variable refrigerant flow (VRF), Variable speed, technology in HVAC, VAV (Variable Air Volume) systems, Ventilation systems, Water Heater

Roman Baugh joins the podcast to talk about oil return and the refrigerant charge in VRV systems. VRV systems—also known as variable refrigerant volume (or variable refrigerant flow/VRF) systems—have one outdoor unit, one or multiple compressors, and multiple indoor units. The outdoor unit modulates to meet the indoor units' fluctuating demands. They are versatile and flexible systems. Like parallel racks, VRV systems have long lines and a lot of piping, so oil return and refrigerant charge are especially critical. VRVs have specific control protocols, as they need refrigerant volume and velocity to move oil and keep it lubricating the compressor for its entire lifespan; oil return mode, the refrigerant charge, and the piping protocols are supposed to support that function.  When it comes to piping protocols, line sizing is critical. Whenever there is a need to relocate the outdoor unit and change the piping configuration, the charge needs to be adjusted, and the piping may even need to be upsized to prevent restrictions from happening. Daikin has VRV WebXpress (and SplitXpress) software for equipment selection; the goal is to help installers out with the line length and charging whenever it needs to be changed.  When trying to get the oil return and line sizing right, you ultimately need to look at the manufacturer's literature and resources. It also helps service technicians if the installer makes the charge and line information readily available to anyone who works on their VRV install in the future. Roman and Bryan also discuss: Where and how oil can settle in VRVs Consequences of improper charge in VRVs Liquid lines in VRVs Violating piping rules and safety protocols Vertical separation in liquid line sizing Suction line sizing POE and PVE oil miscibility Daikin's resources   Check out daikincity.com to find Daikin's literature and software programs. As HVAC professionals, we must stay informed about the different heat pump technologies available today to serve our customers and clients better. Several heat pump technologies are available, each with advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the most common types: 1. Air-source heat pumps: This heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air to heat indoor spaces. They are suitable for moderate climates where temperatures don't drop below zero. 2. Water-source heat pumps: These heat pumps extract heat from water sources, such as a lake or river, or more commonly, water cooled in a cooling tower. They are highly efficient and can be used in all climates but require a nearby water source. 3. Heat Pump Chillers: These are conventional centrifugal chillers modified to serve as heat pumps. 4. Heat Pump Water Heaters: Dedicated heat pumps are designed to transfer heat from the ambient air to water. 5. VRF heat pumps: These systems offer many advantages over traditional ducted systems, such as energy efficiency, individual temperature control, and flexible design. However, they also have disadvantages, such as the higher initial cost and increased maintenance expertise requirements. 6. Ground-source heat pumps: Also known as geothermal heat pumps, these systems extract heat from the ground using a series of pipes buried beneath the surface. They are highly efficient and can be used in all climates but are more expensive to install. As an HVAC professional, it's essential to stay informed about the latest trends and advancements in the industry to provide our clients with the best possible solutions.

Bryan has a bit of an industry nerd out with Ross Trethewey from “This Old House” and TE2 Engineering at IBS 2022 (the International Builders' Show). Ross's education and career have focused on mechanical engineering, especially with sustainable solutions. In building science, the key mindset is to think of the building as a system. Using that school of thought, Ross has developed building science and HVAC solutions that also consider indoor air quality and ventilation, such as hybrid VRF systems.  Many of Ross's solutions take the best aspects of air-source and ground-source heat pumps and apply those to hydronics. Some exciting applications for those types of systems could include simultaneous heating and cooling as well as the integration of domestic hot water. Demand control ventilation has been used for a long time in the commercial world, but its possible use in residential applications is another exciting thing to consider. With proper control devices, DCV would give us the opportunity to control temperature, humidity, VOCs, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and radon. In residential applications, DCV has to be a delicate balancing act, as bringing in too much outdoor air would require us to condition that air. High latent loads also present challenges to some of the ventilation solutions in development. Serviceability is another challenge to DCV usage in residential applications; whenever an innovative system is brought to the market, very few people will know how to fix and maintain those systems. One of the possible solutions is to create instruction manuals and give education similar to what already exists for package units. 3D models and animations also help make complicated systems easier to understand. Ross's presence on “This Old House” marks the third generation of Tretheweys on the show. Ross is excited to talk about building science and HVAC innovations and concepts while on the show. Heat pumps are also getting better, especially due to inverter-driven compressors, enhanced vapor injection, advanced control systems, and ECMs. Heat pumps are safer than gas-fired equipment, and we have made them work well in subzero temperatures (because we're nowhere near absolute zero). On this episode of 10 Minutes To A Better Building, Host Tyler Kern talked with Jason Lawrence, Ductless Technical Specialist at Boland Trane, which provides HVAC solutions and a network of more than 360 locations throughout the United States and Canada. They dove into VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow), the ins and outs, and when VRF is a good design application.“Most VRF is heating and cooling equipment, and it's a split system,” Lawrence said. “We have a condenser outside, and then we have indoor units. We could have up to 50 indoor units, or as something as simple as a condenser with one indoor unit.” What makes this system different is that it's a VX refrigeration system. It has refrigerant in it, but the compressor is actually modulating various capacities. And it's the same thing with the fan motors, Lawrence explains. VRF systems provide energy savings, smaller zones, heat recovery, and reduced duct losses. While a simple Google search might show that a VRF system is ductless that isn't always the case. “Ductless is almost an improper term,” Lawrence said, “...but there's a lot of ducted units, as well, that have air ducts on them. The difference being we may have a smaller duct system on a VRF unit.” VRF systems offer many benefits. For example, in a home, there's a thermostat, and it's hot out. The home unit comes on at 100 percent of its capacity, cools it down to the thermostat temperature, and then turns off. A VRF system is similar to a car in that it's able to match the load. It will require more energy when it starts up, but it's easier to maintain once it's going. “We want it to match the load,” Lawrence said. “It stops so much of the slamming on and off, so it's very energy efficient.”

Fitness Leaders are Needed More Than Ever This is Debra Atkinson and you're listening to the VrF professional's podcast, brought to you by the Flipping 50 Fitness Specialist. For trainers who want to make working with women in midlife their niche and want to own it with a hormone balancing exercise method that has worked for thousands of women since 2013. Right now is the time to learn, create content and programs that grow your business. The world is at home. And online. And looking for you. I'll share the link to get more details on the trainers and health coaches we're looking for to join our team. How else are you spending your time now? Fitness leaders … and I mean that in every sense of the word: those of you who stand in the front of the room and lead classes, who do it one-to-one, and who deliver it face to face or online or by phone, and to those of you who lead those staff meetings and pump up everyone else's tires even now when you don't have answers because you've never had this problem before. Who are you being right now? Scared or Scrappy Are you focused on the problems and how bad it is? Is it a mess? or an opportunity? What do you talk about every day? Is it a bigger deal that you can't get your hair and nails done or that you can't help your clients in their time of need the way you've done business up until now? Fitness leaders get scrappy. They learn to do what me and everyone else is doing right now and that is pivot. You do that by figuring it out as you go. The answers are there. You just can't look to anyone else to find them. You can't expect to do business now the same way you did Before Corona (BC). You can't even expect to do business after it's over the same way you did so it's time to get scrappy about that fact right now. Those over-packed group classes may not be packed again. Those shared yoga mats and TRX and battle ropes, and spinning bike handles may not appeal to your clients any more. Sanitizing them – even if you can - is not helpful. Not in the world we're in now that is governed by a respiratory illness. What you did two months ago and the way you did business isn't relevant right now. If you weren't online, you potentially are right now, and yet are you doing this as a bridge? Or just doing what you can to get by? This is an opportunity fitness leaders are grabbing to create a hybrid business. Needy or Creative Are you spending time asking someone else for answers? Someone who also has never lived through a global pandemic? Why would you suspect anyone else would have the answers? They are in the exact moment you are in. You may be reaching out to them because they deal with stress better. They're more resilient. See that for what it is and value it. Try to understand why and understand that they don't spend the majority of their time wasting energy on negative content or online “news.” Then begin to get creative. What if you did know the answer already? What if you got creative with your time right now? Companies that are used to making triathlon kits for elite athletes are sewing masks. Surely you can make some creative changes in the way you're doing what you do that contributes as opposed to ignores what's happening now. Create a New Answer What if you didn't try to just compete with the noise online providing another one of thousands of workouts available right now? What if you stood out? Why would you? What aren't your customers and clients finding? What aren't those millions of people who weren't exercising before COVID19 and already fit finding? Right now, they too are online more. Right now, they still are not potentially finding answers that serve them – who might be overweight, deconditioned, feeling awkward, depressed and alone. How can you creatively serve them? Seeing Problems or Problem Solving If you're focused on the gym being closed, the fact clients don't want you to come over or to come to you you're missing out. If you focus on people not spending money right now, you are seeing problems. You're potentially seeing problems that don't exist right now. Not everyone is not spending money. Talk to anyone. People are Buying Both Wants and Needs They've likely bought something in the last week that they wanted. It wasn't a necessity. They placed an order on Amazon or somewhere else. There are people who are actually working more and making more – not because they're content collecting unemployment or stimulus checks – but because they have a service or product that is needed right now. Fitness leaders are problem solving right now. If you see a problem your customers have and you can create a solution appropriate for this time, you have a business. Your customer's problems now are not the same as they were 2 months ago. Don't repackage it and think that if it's digital on Zoom or Skype you're set. Right Now or Forever? That is a right now answer that won't help you in the future. So I understand if you have to get something going on right now so that you have revenue coming in you may start with virtual classes and sessions you can charge for. Go deeper. How can you really create a more scalable service and business? If you see the same kind of client problems regularly, and you can help someone with a low-ticket offer they can use right now, you're much more valuable than that trainer who targets a broad audience. If you've been told by anyone that you need to have a “broader appeal” you've been given bad advice. You want to have a niche and you want to be the best at it. If you run a gym or facility of any kind and want to serve a broader audience you hire more experts. If you are in a geographically challenged area with a small population base, then you need first to be come the expert in one thing. You can add another area of expertise after that, and after that. But you can't ever again be a trainer for “everyone.” Every Client Has Unique Needs A working mother of 3 who's a cancer survivor wants a trainer who understands lymphedema first and weight loss second. You can't train her like you train other weight loss clients. A woman in menopause who wants weight loss can't be trained like you train a 20 year old who wants weight loss. Critical or Courageous? If you're being critical of someone who has more money right now, stop. You'd love to be in their place. Feeling secure and safe. And yet you if you get honest haven't been willing to do the same degree of work to get there, take the same amount of risks, or lived within your means not beyond them. There is nothing congruent about the fact you won't do or didn't do what it took to get to the same point – whether that was ask for help, learn a skill or learn how to save and keep your money once you made it. If you say to someone “you don't understand” isn't it true that you delivered the message? You didn't communicate it well. If you've said, “I'm just a personal trainer” or “personal trainers don't make that much money” then you've got the limiting belief that stopped you. No one else said that. I earned 6 figures as a trainer and director. You can earn 5 figures working 3 days a week (I'll link to a recent show with Stu Schaefer in the show notes). Everything you have and everything you don't right now is the result of a choice. What Did You Choose Did you choose to live paycheck-to-paycheck? Did you ignore your profit-and-loss statement? Did you spend for support that you didn't keep an eye on closely enough to know it was hurting you? You made the choices based on the facts you had. If you can honestly look back and say you didn't make the best decisions, don't wallow in that. You can choose again right now to do it differently. COVID19 is no one's fault. None of us saw it coming. Never in history has this happened. Fitness leaders aren't busy pointing fingers and feeling sorry for themselves. They're productively exploring the problems people have right now and the skills, talents, and knowledge they have that could provide answers. Fitness Leaders Show Up in Tough Times Who you are as a fitness leader is what will determine your After COVID (AC). If you're showing up, asking, and listening to your customers you can identify ways to be successful during and after COVID19. Fitness leaders aren't only calling someone else asking for help. Though they're not afraid to ask for something specific. They're calling offering help and ideas, sharing solutions that could grow into products and services. And this will feel so much better. You're a leader. Lead.
