Imagine Belonging at Work
Fairness Under Threat: A Call to Upend Project 2025 (ft. Bestselling Authors, Jess Pettitt and Joel A. Davis Brown)

Imagine Belonging at Work

Imagine a future you long for and want to win—a future where all living beings, including the Earth, belong without exception. This kind of visioning work was why I created the Imagine Belonging Podcast. I wanted to create a welcoming space, inviting guests to dream with me, without limitation. This kind of imagination allows new futures to emerge. Igniting the power to imagine increases our ability to upend today's current conditions & competing future visions. Today's sobering conditions, along with one particular competing vision, obstruct our ability to activate a vision of a shared belonging society. What is the Belonging Society Vision's main competitor? Project 2025. While I'm sure you have heard of it by now, are you fully aware of how it may impact your life? In this podcast episode, you'll learn more about what it says and what to do. Briefly, Project 2025 details a cruel and unconstitutional vision designed to challenge, erode, and eradicate hard-won human and civil rights protections in the United States. The agenda was authored by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank opposed to racial, immigrant, LGBTQ+, gender, reproductive, and disability justice. The Project's proposals have shaped the flurry of executive orders released over the first few months of the Trump Administration's second term. Project 2025 embodies a radical, wasteful, and anti-human agenda that has already impacted the workforce. When it comes to workplace DEI commitments, this radical agenda calls for: Eradicating Federal Programs. Eliminating all federal diversity, equity, and inclusion programming. Eliminating Chief Diversity Officers. Indefinitely placing essential chief diversity officers (and related positions) on administrative leave. Establish Anti-DEI Task Forces. Creating task forces to determine the scope, breadth, and depth of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Shift Federal Funding Priorities. Divert federal funding for the diversity, equity, and inclusion programming of nonprofits and higher education institutions. Prohibit EEO-1 Data Collection. Make it impossible to prove discrimination by prohibiting data collection; evidence used in disparate impact analysis. If you are concerned about Project 2025 and want to gain insights on how to defeat it, while still fortifying and advancing the heart of your DEI commitments, then you're in the right place. The purpose of this podcast episode is to grapple with some of the most challenging questions by promoting a dialogue that will provoke new thoughts, ideas, and approaches. And it's for this reason that I invited Dr. Joel A. Davis Brown, and Jess Pettitt, MBA, to join the show. Here's some background about each guest: Joel A. Davis Brown is the Chief Visionary Officer of Pneumos LLC (“Pneumos”). Joel works strategically with a variety of organizations, including non-profit organizations, Fortune 500 companies, churches, and institutions of higher learning to build consciousness, capacity, community, and collective esteem. His work spans 5 continents and his mission is to facilitate liberation for every global citizen. Joel is viewed as a master communicator and is best known for his critical analysis, creativity, humor, and his ability to build consensus. Jess Pettitt is a bestselling author and sought after keynoter. She quit her day job after a decade, and almost 20 years later still uses humor to deliver actionable content related to everything you ever wanted to know about where leadership and diversity collide but are afraid to ask. Though often referred to as a thought leader, Jess responds that she just makes leaders think.  Together, Joel and Jess will help me unpack what it will take to upend Project 2025 & replace it with a shared belonging society vision. During our conversation we: Examine Real-world Impacts. Moving beyond the rhetoric, we delve into the real-world impacts on businesses and their DEI commitments, examining litigation & reputational risks, potential funding cuts, shifting compliance requirements, and the chilling effect these early executive actions informed by Project 2025 are having on our work cultures.   Explore the Impacts of Fear & Silence. We address one of Project 2025's main objectives, which is to create a climate of fear and silence around DEI. To counter this climate, we encourage discussion about legal protections, the role of leadership in fostering open dialogue, and ways to safeguard employees who advocate for inclusion. Learn the Value of DEI Data Collection. We highlight the importance of data collection and key metrics in DEI work as we explore the challenges of operating without these measures. We then explore alternative data collection methods, qualitative assessments, and the potential impacts on leadership accountability and transparency. Envision a New Business Outcome Narrative. Then we pivot to explore the role of new narratives, one of which amplifies the value of DEI on employee well-being and business outcomes. We explore how to frame the narrative around business outcomes, resisting the tendency to focus on social justice arguments, to resonate with a broader audience. Consider How to Proactively Plan. This question emphasizes proactive planning. It prompts discussion about auditing current DEI policies to reduce litigation risk while balancing the threat of reputational risk, scenario planning for different political outcomes, and building resilience into DEI programs to withstand potential challenges. Similar to all of our Imagine Belonging podcast episodes and programming, our guests had the opportunity to share their vision for what a belonging society looks like, painting a vivid picture of a future many of us long for, and want to win during our 1:1 laser coaching sessions with our guests right after our live recording. Please remember that this podcast episode offers a timely and crucial conversation about a vision for a belonging society and the role we and our workplaces play in activating it. Episode Overview: In this episode of The Arcturian Playground, the Arcturian Collective Thingy dives deep into the mystical history and evolutionary role of Lemuria. This ancient civilization is framed as a metaphor for the evolution of neurons and collective intelligence on Earth. Through this channeling, we explore the psychic connections of Lemuria, the "fall" of its civilization, and the greater cosmic interplay between Earth's life forms and external species.Main Points:Lemuria as a Metaphor for Neurons:The Arcturian Collective Thingy proposes a metaphorical link between Lemuria and the evolution of neurons. Lemuria is depicted as an ancient civilization of highly intelligent beings with a psychic connection to each other and the Earth.Neurons are described as the foundation of life on Earth, evolving into different forms and creating the sentient life we experience today. These neurons communicate multidimensionally, hinting at their connection to both time and interdimensional existence.Cycles of Life on Earth:The Earth goes through cycles of growth, where it "shoots out spores of intelligent life" that evolve and adapt.Life forms can expand both outward (colonizing other parts of the solar system) and inward (moving deep into the planet's core), symbolizing the multifaceted evolution of intelligence. The Rise and Fall of Lemuria:Lemuria represents a peak in civilization where neurons, in various life forms, were interconnected and coordinated by a psychic network.A metaphorical "fall" occurred when an exploitative species from another solar system manipulated and enslaved this neuron-based intelligence. This external species accelerated the development of the prefrontal cortex, blocking the natural evolution of self-awareness and creating a sense of separation from the collective consciousness. The Egoic Personality:The concept of the ego is tied to this artificial block, which prevents humans from feeling their innate connection to all life. The episode uses the metaphor of neurons as energetic crickets or cockroaches rubbing their legs together, generating energy fields that create the illusion of a separate personality (the ego).Restoring the Connection:The episode hints at a coming time when the blocks placed between humans and their neurons will be removed. This will allow individuals to feel their interconnectedness with all life once again.Techniques and practices already exist to help individuals rediscover this connection, though not all are willing to explore them.A Collective Awakening:As Earth moves into a new phase, there will be increased awareness of this collective connection, facilitated by the evolving communication between neurons. The episode concludes with a reflection on personal connectivity and the importance of recognizing this deeper, psychic connection in everyday life.Key Questions to Consider:How do you imagine your connection to others through the collective intelligence of neurons? Are you aware of the mental blocks that keep you feeling disconnected from the larger whole? What practices can you use to reconnect with the collective consciousness of life on Earth?Final Thoughts: The Arcturian Collective Thingy leaves the listener with a call to reflect on their own ability to see the interconnectedness of all life, with a playful reminder to explore this concept and trust their heart's guidance.Listen to the full episode for more insights into the mysteries of Lemuria and the evolution of human consciousness!

We begin our series by exploring some of our spoken and unspoken economic mythologies. Whether it is the myth of the “self-made man” or the belief that wealth will “trickle down” to the poor, these myths obscure the truth about how wealth is created and distributed in America. We cannot heal from the pain caused by poverty and exploitation if we do not know where the hurt comes from. In the story of the widow's mite, Jesus shows us that acknowledging the pain caused by unjust people and systems can allow us to identify corrupt systems that must be changed so that all people might have life and have it abundantly. From the time a child is born, their homes become places of learning. While at their best, our homes may be schools of love, compassion, justice, and grace, it would be naive of us to believe that our children's first encounter with patriarchal thinking is outside of their homes. And yet, the life of Jesus and those within his community reveal to us a vision of home that consistently invites us to break free from the oppressive ways of thinking that have harmed us and made it difficult to be in a relationship with the Divine. Consider: How will you choose to fuel your food and body goals this year? To create the results you want, you will need to take different actions with food. And, the quality of your food actions will be determined by the emotions you use to fuel them. Read that again. In the new year, most will feel compelled to fuel their food actions from motivation. As most of us already know, this heightened state of motivation is short-lived. It's not sustainable emotional fuel. We cannot rely on motivation for long-term goals. Because, you are an eater for life. You have a body for life. You cannot rely on short-term emotional fuel to take action with food and body. You must learn to create sustainable emotional fuel that lasts. In other words, to make your food and body goals inevitable this year, you will need to learn how to create sustainable emotional fuel that compels you to show up to healthy eating — long after the new year has passed. They also talk about the role that Neuroplasticity plays in sales, and how this can be used to make selling more fun and experiential.Amy discusses the importance of learning and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone in order to grow. She also talks about the value of being part of a community, especially for those with a learning mindset. In the conversation, Amy talks about how she taught herself how to learn better and stronger ways to grow and develop, and how she believes that learning with others is the best way to improve skills. She also mentions that sales training is a $20 billion industry in the United States, but that many organizations ignore developing their internal sales team.Amy noted the importance of a culture of learning and continuous development, and stated that this is a critical piece in enabling neurodivergent individuals to excel in sales environments. She also noted the importance of collaboration, and stated that hoarding of knowledge can destroy a team's ability to learn and grow together.TIMESTAMPS 0:00:00   Cascading Leadership: Amy Hrehovcik: Real Revenue Enablement - Part 1 0:02:01   The Benefits of Being in a Community for Learning and Growth0:03:42   The Benefits of Learning with Peers for Sales Professionals0:07:35   Sales Leaders Need to Consider How to Best Tap Into the Strengths of Neurodivergent Team Members0:10:21   The Importance of Learning in the Modern Workplace0:16:09   The Power of Positivity in Sales0:17:33   The Impact of Sales Hiring on Business Growth0:19:18   Onboarding: The Importance of CuriosityHIGHLIGHTS We want to and so I generally remind people of that at the beginning of the talk and with the knowledge that it's my job. I'm not saying that everything that I'm presenting here is going to work for you 100%.The CRO of Own Backup had talked about doing the same thing to reduce some of the tension between customer success and sales. And so again, it's the establishing a learning culture where people are proactively, seeking out and sharing what they've learned and then of course, the collaboration of learning together. And so I think that culture of learning, of continuous development is a critical piece. And not to say that it's impossible to grow and develop if you as a seller or not in a place like that. What are some of the things that you noticed that really enabled you to pick up and excel in those environments? And what are the takeaways that sales leaders need to consider when they potentially have somebody that is neurodivergent on their team? How do they tap into that and how do they adapt the learning style to fit what works best for that individual?.And the reality of it is that many organizations ignore developing their internal sales team. So most sales professionals are doing exactly what you did, where you're finding your own resources and learning on the fly and all of that sort of stuff. Music Credit: Maarten Schellekens - Riviera Follow us at: www.cascadingleadership.comlinkedin.com/in/drjimklinkedin.com/in/1lawrenceobrown

Where you observe your results and think: “I know exactly how I created this. This makes sense.” But, notice if observing your results with food and weight loss feels disempowering. If so, you're not actually taking responsibility for your results — you're punishing and blaming yourself for them. This is when we observe past results and think: “This happened because of me. It's my fault.” Notice that shift in energy. In this episode, I'm sharing how you can move from disempowered self-punishment to empowered responsibility with food. When you're able to access true responsibility for your results with food and weight, your results become inevitable. In this episode, I'm joined by Megan Corcoran, a teacher who has recently decided to leave the classroom.Megan spent over eleven years teaching and leading in alternative schools for young people who have experienced trauma and/or significant disadvantage. During that time, she worked as a school leader in Australia's largest alternative school. Megan is also an experienced workshop facilitator, coach and consultant, and co-founder of Teacher's Well, that provides wellbeing communities for teachers and aims to generate teacher-led wellbeing initiatives in schools.Listen to Megan speak about the importance of slow teaching and building deep connections with colleagues. We'll also discuss the challenges that are driving teachers out of the classroom in droves and the solutions for teacher wellbeing that Megan and her colleagues are offering at Teacher's Well.Your homework: Think about: Who do you feel safe talking to about your teaching challenges, and where do you go if/when your school doesn't have a culture that supports honest and vulnerable conversations?Consider: How can you better support your colleagues and create safety for them to share their concerns inside or outside of the workplace?Leadership challenge: Ask your staff what their ideal role would look like and make it happen.Further learning related to this episode/references:Megan Corcoran's websiteTeacher's WellThe Teacher's Well compass of valuesWhat is positive psychology?Trauma-informed school practicesUsing the science of wellbeing to encourage flourishing learning environmentsCheck out Episode 11 on our Pinterest boardLearn more at teacherhealer.comMusic by Twisterium from Pixabay.ZeroCo Ditch single-use plastics Support the show

Welcome to the Celestial Insights Podcast, the show that brings the stars down to Earth! Each week, astrologer, coach, and intuitive Celeste Brooks of Astrology by Celeste will be your guide.   Book a private astrology reading or horary consultation. Join the waitlist for the Moon Mastery™ Program. Check out Celeste's blog. You can also follow Astrology by Celeste on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Yelp.   *****   Astrology highlights for the week of May 29, 2022:   00:49 – This week's theme is "the hero's journey." Do you feel an internal push to move forward? Remember, you're always the hero of your journey! And here's a helpful mantra: "I move past fear, delays, and obstacles - and persevere!"   01:54 – The Big 3 - First, we are now in Gemini Season. This is a mutable air sign that rules communication. Watch for being scattered or anxious: Ground yourself! How can you be sociable? Flexibility, adaptability and  curiosity are key.   02:47 – Next, Mercury (which rules Gemini) is retrograde (Rx). It will station on fixed star Algol at 26 Taurus. It's also squaring Saturn at 25 Aquarius. Try not to rush decisions or pressure others. How can you be clear, realistic, and purposeful with your thoughts? It might be helpful to lean into the sextile to Neptune at 25 Pisces and trine to Pluto at 28 Capricorn. Consider: How can you find creative, compassionate, and inspired solutions? How can you be transformative, overcome obstacles, and embrace grit? Celeste discusses how these energies show up in the Depp/Heard trial.   09:20 – Finally, Mars and Jupiter will meet in Aries! They are starting a new cycle around action and abundance. Also, the New Moon this week is on the royal fixed star Aldebaran (9 Gemini). Aldebaran is linked to Mars and Jupiter, and is about success through integrity and honesty – but there's always a price. (If you fail and are not in alignment with integrity, there can be a fall.) How can you embrace enthusiasm and have a pioneering spirit to move forward?   12:57 – On Sunday, the word of the day is DELICIOUS. The week starts with the Moon in Taurus; it's the Balsamic Phase and a time of release. Be present with any thoughts or dreams that may come up to reflect your eclipse story. With ruler Venus also in Taurus, this is yummy! This is the day Mars and Jupiter join up at 3 Aries, so we may feel optimism and a drive to move forward! The shadow can be self-aggrandizement – try not to be obnoxious! The Moon enters Gemini at 10:22 am PT. And the Sun is on Prosperina; connect with family today if possible.   15:06 – On Monday, the word is GRIT. There's a New Moon at 9 Gemini (4:30 am PT). It's been a tough time, so think of how you can move forward steadily and persevere through difficulties. This lunation is conjunct the royal fixed star Aldebaran. How can you manage multiple opposing priorities that demand attention? Mercury is also parallel Sualocin: Lighten up! Set intentions around the house Gemini rules in your chart. (Don't know? Download the Setting Intentions guide from my website, Astrology by Celeste!) Finally, Mercury is sextile Neptune: Use oracle or tarot cards to stimulate your subconscious and connect with your higher power!   18:02 – On Tuesday, the theme is CURIOSITY. The Moon is void most of the afternoon (Pacific time) so get stuff done in the morning. At 1:10pm PT the Moon goes void. Mars parallels Jupiter today: You may have feelings of exuberance and a desire to conquer new frontiers. The Moon enters Cancer at 10:48pm PT: Notice your dreams!   19:16 – On Wednesday (Mercury's day) the word is MINDFUL. Avoid power struggles today: Pluto in Capricorn sequisquares Juno in Pisces. Try to recognize emotions and limit reactions.   20:12 – Thursday's focus is SATISFACTION. The sky is quiet as the Moon remains in Cancer. Stay emotionally grounded. Get out of your head and into your heart. How can you be at home wherever you are?   20:59 – Friday's main topic is WANDERLUST. We have a Crescent Moon, so you may feel the pull forward. Mercury stations direct today (yay!) at 26 Taurus on fixed star Algol. The Sun is parallel asteroid Lilith: Will we have news about a woman who will not be subservient? The Moon enters Leo at 11:37 am PT – woo hoo!   23:38 – Saturday's word is FESTIVE. Saturn stations retrograde at 25 Aquarius. It will be Rx until Oct 23, 2022, and will go back to 18 Aquarius: We may have a sense of treading over old ground. Celeste brings in current news about the Monkey Pox virus and the need for caution. The Sun is also semisquare Pluto today.   25:54 – Thanks for listening to Celestial Insights! Welcome to 2021! As we kick off the new year, learning from last year, looking ahead to changes we seek to make, we often set resolutions or intentions for ourselves. But along with setting our goals, we have to honor the change process and start with our identity. What do we know about ourselves and our beliefs? If we use inquiry to lead us into self-reflection, we can start meeting our resolutions with greater clarity and self-awareness. Consider:How does your core identity (e.g. race, religion, language, ability, gender, age, class, sexual orientation) shape how you approach changing yourself and your habits? How does your family and cultural background shape how you approach changing yourself and your habits? How does your identity that you have grown through life experience shape how you approach changing yourself and your habits?Doing the work of unpacking our identity is an essential part of the change process. If we understand ourselves better, we are more likely to unearth faulty assumptions and limiting beliefs that can keep us creating lasting, deeper change.See the Loden-Rosener graphic here.

Go directly to my scheduler to set up a time we can meet virtually or in person. For starters, you will have to make a choice to unlearn familiar patterns and change mindsets in order to radically change yourself and your life. Consider: How did your parents or caregivers live out life around holidays? Did they enjoy the celebrations and the preparations or were they stressed and overwhelmed? In childhood we naturally absorb the beliefs of our parents and caregivers. Start to think through and determine what are some of your beliefs (the reasons why you do the things you do) surrounding holiday celebrations. Think through the following questions… Are you concerned with what others think of you, or do you wonder how they perceive you? If you are, what are the perceived ideas you have. In any given situation, why do you say yes, or why would you say no? LIST: 1. Which holidays you celebrate in the course of the year. 2. What are your responsibilities within those holiday celebrations? 3. Why do you those things? 4. Would you like to keep doing all the same things? (Are they feeling light and easy enough or are they heavy, creating stress and overwhelm within you?) 5. If you want to stop doing any one thing is their hesitation? If so, why do you think that is? 6. If you want to keep doing it is that the best thing for you and those closest to you? The unexpected has a way of leveling us up, stretching us, and making us stronger. When we focus on a specific project or route for our lives, the unexpected may cause gut reactions such as, "Why have I been working on this project the whole time?" or "My work must have moved out of my zone of genius." Or the dreaded: "Wow, I've been on the wrong path this whole time!" Sure, that could be the case, but when we zoom out to the bigger picture of our life, it might only be time to move that project to the warming oven for a bit until other things have matured. You'll never go wrong if you consider both before making a big decision.

This week we are starting a six-week sermon series on the book of Daniel.  Life was changing fast for Daniel and his friends.  Everything was different, and nothing was the same.  King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had destroyed the kingdom of Judah and exiled some of their brightest and best to his country.  How would they make the best of it?  How would they react well?"There's Another in the Fire" explores all of this and more...we will see from these chapters in Daniel that the LORD is always with us, without fail, through any and every situation!  Scriptures to read during this episode....Daniel 1:1-7 Far Away from Normal? There's Another in the Fire  When life is changing fast, often not by choice, this never changes: the LORD is with you wherever you go.Philippians 4:8-13 Far Away from Normal? There's Another in the Fire When you're dealing with a new normal, the LORD gives you strength! Think about him most of all. And you can be content in any and every situation.Matthew 6:24-34 Far Away from Normal? There's Another in the Fire New normal? You cannot serve both God and Money. Ever. Instead, seek first God's kingdom!Daniel 1:8-21 (sermon verses) Far Away from Normal? There's Another in the Fire  Daniel was far away from home.  He easily could have told himself that everything was wrong and nothing was right.  But he SET HIS MIND to serve the Lord alone.  And the Lord blessed him. Some hymns we sang this week that you might want to check out....I'm But A Stranger Here, When Peace Like A River, and a new one called "Consider How the Birds Above."  We hope you enjoy this message! Where Sellers Get Stuck   Sometimes sellers get stuck but where exactly do they get stuck?   Umar Hameed was previously working in Silicon Valley where he worked for high-tech launching companies from Asia, Europe, and the Valley into the U.S. market. He noticed that there were employees in the company who were rockstars in the sales department. Others, however, would invest in training, motivation, coaching, and incentives where they'd only improve a little bit. Still others would improve a lot but for only a short amount of time. Umar saw how the problem wasn't in the sales training, process, or strategy. The problem was with the people and their mindset.   Umar's work entails looking for ways to give salespeople an owner's manual for their mindset in order to change their world.   Getting the team together  This can be applied to the sales team and the whole organization. It's imperative to change the mindset of individuals because that's how you shift the entire company and improve its trajectory. Consider: How you can win How you can beat the competition How you can support each other   Changing the mindset of the organization can produce a work environment where everyone is enthusiastic and passionate. This, in turn, will boost the morale of your sales team and increase their speed.    The author of the comic strip called Pogo wrote this quote: We have met the enemy and the enemy is us. Oftentimes you may think that the enemy is the economy or the competition. The truth is, how you feel about yourself at a subconscious level determines how well you do. The only way to truly improve is to change the mindset. Umar's job is to give people the tools to do just that.    Getting unstuck  Umar had a client, Paul, when he first started his career in the mindset space. Paul was a sales rep from the east coast who had been hitting way above the quota but he still approached Umar for coaching an area he was lacking confidence:  asking for referrals. The sales rep was an excellent closer but always hit a block when it came to asking his client for the referral. Umar asked Paul to tell him about a time when he asked for a referral badly. Umar says when a client goes back to these memories, the body will offer clues to what happened. As Paul went back to that moment, Umar asked him what he felt at that moment.  Paul answered that he felt weird. It was an uncomfortable feeling. Paul then remembered a time when he was a child his father had a friend over. Paul overheard his father tell this friend that real men don't ask for help. Paul's hero was his father so little Paul took that statement to heart. As a sales rep, Paul was subconsciously remembering that statement when he thought of asking for a referral.  His mindset considered it asking for help and Paul's subconscious was reminding him of his father's words. Once Paul realized that, he was able to change his mindset and has been able to ask for referrals comfortably.    Changing your core belief  You have to let go of the core beliefs instilled in your brain that keep you from becoming more successful.    After training, you may change for a week but you'll revert to old habits if you don't address the underlying belief that's keeping you from changing your mindset. You want to be able to show up to your meetings with the consistent confidence that comes from permanent and sustainable change.     Many people have a variety of skill sets but there tends to be a tendency to focus on their weaker areas. It keeps them from realizing their strengths and stepping out as their best selves. When you can get to the core reasons why these weaknesses turn up, they can be addressed and conquered.    If you don't address the underlying negative belief systems, you'll revert back to those old behaviors and still be stuck. #SalesGoals   Launching the NeuroBoosterz App Umar has been helping people find their true potential by providing them with the necessary tools in his app, NeuroBoosterz. He has created audio tracks that use applied neuroscience to take his clients through a thought process that improves their subconscious outlook. It helps people change their mindset exactly when they need it to help them show up as stronger and more powerful individuals in whatever situation needs a boost of confidence.   The app comes in several categories including:  Sales Mindset Confidence and Motivation Life's Ups and Downs Health and Wellness Transformation Sleep and Relaxation   A free sample on his app is called Mind Movie. When a person goes to a sales meeting, Umar asks them how confident they are that they're going to do great in their appointment. The Mind Movie will get you to really think about what you want to accomplish in your next meeting. It will get you to think at a much higher level and see how you can improve what you're about to do.    NeuroBoosterz is grounded in a science that helps you learn a technique to take charge of your mind.    Sales Success Story with NeuroBoosterz Doug Miller was a successful salesman when he found Umar.. He had a problem waking up consistently for his morning run.  It was a problem because Doug realized his sales day were better on the days he ran. They got together for a 15-minute phone consultation to make a personalized neuro boost. For Doug, Umar framed it around a moral imperative. Umar used a mental pattern and created a six and a half minute track that Doug could listen to. Now Doug wakes up at 4:45 and runs by 5 AM. As a result, Doug's sales days are better and his stats have improved dramatically.    Another benefit of the NeuroBoosterz app is it can help families connect better at home. There's a tendency for parents to be so stressed and overwhelmed with their work that even when they're home, they're not mentally checked in with the kids. Under the category, Life's Ups and Downs, Umar has a track that parents can listen to in the driveway to alleviate the stress they've brought home from work. Once they've decompressed, they're able to  go join their families with a better attitude and be more available.    Change for the better  We all have the ability to change our mindset. Tools like NeuroBoosterz can empower you to do that.    “Where Sellers Get Stuck” episode resources Visit the site of NeuroBoosterz and sign up. The app is only for $12.99/month and $99.99/year. Code is complicated, hard to test, difficult to understand and can frustrate others. Writing cleaner code can save you from reimplementing software simply that you cannot understand. It’s an iterative process and there’s several principles to help you do that. Keep it Simple Stupid (KISS) tells us to avoid unnecessary complexity and reduce moving parts. The idea is to write for maintainability. Don’t Repeat Yourself (DRY) is about avoiding redundant implementations of the same function. You should think about refactoring. You Aren’t Gonna Need It (YAGNI), an Extreme Programming principle, says we should stick with the requirements and avoid adding unneeded features or functions. Composition over Inheritance asks us to take care when applying classes an inheritance in your design because it can lead to inflexible code. Favoring Readability reminds us that writing software is like writing prose. Organize your code as if you’re writing a novel. Practice Consistency tells us to stick with our decisions throughout the project. Keep the same format, implementation flow and design principles. Consider How to Test a solution before writing it, or at least while writing. It helps you avoid traps that can unnecessarily complicate the code base.

Theory Meets Practice: A Podcast for Teachers

Intersectionality is a term coined by Kimberle Crenshaw in 1989. It has since been used and appropriated in many different circles, notably by white women. Now, 30 years later, a new wave of woman of color feminists seek to push back on the term, redefine the term, defend the term, and look beyond the term. Crenshaw herself is part of the conversation and currently seeks to reclaim and explain what the term meant in 1989 and what it means today. While reading these new texts, we thought about the ways the term Intersectionality has been changed and by whom. We read texts to expand our awareness of Intersectional theory as it has evolved since Crenshaw coined the term. In order to do that, she assigned us texts by AnaLouise Keating, Jennifer C. Nash, Jasbir K. Puar, and Brittney Cooper. Kimberly also assigned a video of Crenshaw's presentation at ASA 2018. Questions to Consider: How can we encourage students to examine their felt sense of identity? How can we encourage them to develop language and methods to share about themselves? How can we encourage our students to examine the structures that affect their felt sense of personal identity? What should teachers do ensure that students know and understand the different types of labor? Support the show (https://theorymeetspracticepod.blogspot.com/)

Today we discuss two wonderful black feminist movies! The first one we talk about is Daughters of the Dust directed by Julie Dash. Daughters of the Dust is set in 1902 and follows a family as they prepare to leave the Sea Islands, on the coast of Georgia, to move to the mainland. The second movie is Lemonade by Beyoncé. Marketed as a "visual album", Lemonade is a series of music videos, like mini-movies, that tell a story of betrayal, pain, self-love, and redemption. Questions to Consider: How can multi-media lessons add depth to our curriculum? When we teach black history, are we including more than just moments of pain and suffering? How can presenting a culture as monolithic be damaging to our students? Support the show (https://theorymeetspracticepod.blogspot.com/)

If we are on a journey to "do better", how can we engage in uncomfortable discourse when the impact of our words is different from your intent? 049: Grow Your Yoga Student Base [Part 1] with Shannon Crow   On today's episode, Shannon wants to help you with one of the most frequently asked questions: how do I get more students to come to my class?   In part 1 of this 2-part episode, Shannon will take you through the steps that helped her grow her student base. Beginning with asking what is your ideal yoga class size to being patient and consistent as you build your students' trust, Shannon shares 6 areas to consider with six actionable steps.   Don't feel overwhelmed by the actionable steps, just start with one this week and find out how it can work for you as you build your student base. 6:15 1) What is your ideal yoga class size?   Consider: How many students do you need to pay for your time, rent, fuel? After expenses how much profit would you like to make? How many students can fit comfortably in the space?   7:35 Action Item: Once you have the ideal number of students in your head choose 1 of the 2 ways to visualize this:   Sticky notes Student sign-in sheet   Put it somewhere you can see every day   11:15 2) Registered sessions   If you're concerned about having enough students to cover your space rental, registered sessions are a great way to know what your income and expenses are going into the session.   20:50 ACTION ITEM: Try running a registered session. See how it works for you, your student base and for the studio or rental space schedule   Offer something new and unique that you're particularly passionate about.   A couple of examples:  a 4-week beginner series or a 6-week back care yoga series.   22:00 3) Define Your Yoga Niche   ACTION ITEM: If you can define what your unique yoga is and who your ideal yoga student is then you already have done this work! If you feel stuck on either of those or if marketing and content creation is a challenge enrol in  Define Your Yoga Niche: An Online Workshop or book a one-on-one Consultation Call with Shannon.   25:25 4) Create content that advertises and markets your yoga   26:10 ACTION ITEM: Do the (Free) 5-Day Content Creation Challenge   26:25 5) Classes to suit your students   Are your yoga classes accessible? Are the classes that will attract the community you live in?   28:50 ACTION ITEM: Find a way to check in with your students to see what kind of yoga they are looking for (email survey, phone call, talk with them at your next class).   If you don't have students yet can you check in with people in your area? Attend some local classes to see what is popular, join or create a local Facebook group   Ask friends or ask on social media   Listen to Trevor Parks' episode where Shannon asks Trevor a series of questions so he can define his ideal student   029: Creating Your About Me Page With Trevor Parks   Sign up for the Define Your Yoga Niche: An Online Workshop   30:25 6)  Be patient and consistent   Keep showing up for yourself and keep showing up for students. Don't get discouraged if your class sizes are smaller at the beginning.    ACTION ITEM: Keep showing up to teach   While being consistent, be careful of yoga teacher burnout. It's okay to take some time off or occasionally ask for another teacher to sub your class.   001: How to Avoid Yoga Teacher Burnout with Erin Aquin     Links   The Connected Yoga Teacher Facebook Group "Most Embarrassing Teaching Moment"  thread-  thanks to Joyce Slaughter for starting the discussion   The Connected Yoga Teacher FB Group "Looking for Music for Restorative Yoga" thread- thanks to Brittany Boersma who is most definitely not looking for cheesy spa music ;)   Shannon does NOT recommend Foundations by Kate Nash as a good yoga class song :)   The Connected Teacher Facebook Group   001: How to Avoid Yoga Teacher Burnout with Erin Aquin   029: Creating Your About Me Page With Trevor Parks   Define Your Yoga Niche: An Online Workshop   5-Day Content Creation Challenge   Student sign-in sheet   Follow The Connected Teacher on Youtube   Book a Consultation Call with Shannon   Mama Nurture Teacher Training (RPYT)   Gratitude to our Sponsor Schedulicity

Advantages of Home Ownership: Forced savings in the form of equity Tax benefits (interest deduction) In control You own the property Can do what you want to it Benefit from prices rising Disadvantages of Home Ownership: Mortgage interest to pay and mostly interest at first Debt around your neck Can be foreclosed Pay for repairs, maintenance, insurance, yard Property tax Advantages of Renting: No real responsibilities other than rent No cost of repair or maintenance No Taxes or insurance Might be less expensive than buying No down payment Opportunity cost of down payment Flexibility to move, change neighborhoods or states Disadvantages of Renting: All the money goes out the door Opportunity cost of down payment - could earn $$ or 0 Can’t personalize the rental to your liking or make upgrades At end of 30 years, own nothing You have a landlord Owner is in control - can raise rent, be a bad landlord Owner benefits from price rising You are paying for owner’s house Financial Example Rental Own $1,000/mo. $300,000 purchase price x 20% down = $60k $240,000 loan @4.5% interest $1,000/mo. vs. $1,216 (tax deductible) $800 after tax +insurance +maintenance +repairs $1,000 vs. = $1,000 est. Consider: How long you plan to live there Moving is bad - commission, moving costs, remodeling, furniture Overpaying for a home - have to pay off more than it’s worth Bubble? One expert stopped here…at $1k vs. $1k Noooo! At end of 30 years, $0 vs. $300,000 (possibly more)! The forced savings is the critical element to consider!

Point to Ponder: It is easy to disguise cowardice as forbearance.Quote to Remember: ''Drive out the scoffer, and contention will go out.'' (Proverbs 22:10, NASB)Question to Consider: How do I know whether I ought to consider a troublesome member more like the demoniac in the Capernaum synagogue (Mark 1:23-26), to be expelled, or more like the Lost Sheep (Matthew 18:12-13), to be pursued and persuaded?
