When your business feels like it's crumbling, what do you do? Some men cling harder. Some walk away. But the rare few — they evolve. Today's guest, Ryland Engelhart, is one of those rare few. He helped build Café Gratitude into a beloved brand, co-founded the global movement Kiss the Ground, produced award-winning films about regeneration, and is now helping create Sovereignty Ranch—a living, breathing example of legacy in action. But none of that happened without walking away from what no longer served him. And that's exactly what today's conversation is about. If you're standing at a crossroads in business, family, or purpose, this conversation will show you how to lead through it. In this episode, you'll discover:

I met Ryland Engelhart at a Deepak Chopra wellness retreat in South Carolina. If you are a food person, his name may or may not be familiar to you, but his family's two restaurant brands in Southern California (Café Gratitude and Gracias Madre) are synonymous with healthy, highly tasty vegan dishes that are not named after ingredients or a chef's daughter but are instead positive affirmations. If you go to one of Café Gratitude's eight locations in Southern California, and want a delicious, gluten-free salad of edamame, mustard-marinated kale, warm broccolini with dill, avocado and maple-toasted seeds, be prepared to let your server know when he comes to the table that I AM ENCHANCHANTING.   Before you roll your eyes, know that these affirmations, indeed, Ryland's doctrine of living are genuine. He freely states that in the early 2000s when he and his brother migrated from San Francisco to Los Angeles with the concept of Café Gratitude, he specifically did so with the zeal and belief of an evangelist. He was on a mission to change the world through food, humbly serving his fellow humans and creating a culture of health.  That same zeal and belief underpins his “huge, foolish project, like Noah…” called Kiss the Ground, a non-profit organization that explores how we save the earth from global warming and the human species from extinction through regenerative agriculture and literally pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere and putting it back into the ground. Kiss the Ground is also the name of a film Ryland produced that has had over 5 million views on Netflix and won significant acclaim for the message that paints a 3D picture of how we can sustain our food supply and the planet. The film, even with all its successes, has also been deeply criticized for a lack of diversity and not connecting the tenants of land management to its roots in the Native American and indigenous peoples of the North American Continent. That criticism has touched Ryland personally. It has been a source of disenchantment, self-distrust and apathy. He authentically describes how one of the greatest achievements of his life, has also been the cause of pain and the evaporation of his ideas of who he is. We speak to Ryland during a time in his life when he is the process of rebuilding, reflection and reexamination. This is his season of life where there is no production, but silence, stillness and tarrying as springtime glimmers on the horizon. It's a lesson for us all, really. As he describes it, there is a “divine timing for the inhale and the exhale.” And as with each breath, there is always a pause.Kiss the Ground CommunityRyland on IGPatrick's WebsitePatrick on IGAt the Podium on IGPatrick on LinkedIn

Over seven years ago, food activist, entrepreneur, filmmaker, and Café Gratitude founder Ryland Engelhart took a trip to New Zealand, where he saw a panel presentation that moved him to tears. He was convinced that there was simply too much carbon in the atmosphere. Even if humanity successfully reduced its emissions and decarbonized transportation, he likened the experience to slowly driving off a cliff. But after this presentation, he saw another - and it helped him truly understand the connection between nature and humanity. He finally saw a way forward, a way to make the world better in seven generations, and could envision a pathway to the future that didn’t end in catastrophe. Over the next seven years, Ryland put together the Kiss The Ground documentary to share this discovery with as many people as possible, and I’ve been excited about this film for a long time. Narrated by Woody Harrelson and now streaming worldwide on Netflix, the film has been called “The key to combating climate change” by Forbes and lauded for inspiring “A rare feeling of hope” by the New York Times. My family and I watched the film twice in the last week, and I’m astounded by what Ryland has achieved. In our conversation today, Ryland and I discuss the incredible journey that led to him making the movie, and how to consciously think about the deep connection between the health of our bodies and the planet in your daily practice. We explore how to use these concepts in your life, in nature, in your business, and in your family to create sustainable growth. As Dads and entrepreneurs, it’s on us to protect and heal our families and the planet, and Ryland is issuing a call to arms in service of our planet. Gold Nuggets What Ryland learned over the seven years he spent making Kiss The Ground. How a presentation about carbon emissions and symbiosis helped Ryland connect the dots between the health of our bodies, our environment, and our planet and inspired his mission. How Ryland is paying homage to an urgent, pressing story with ancient roots through his work as an activist. Why we are all waking up to the fact that things aren’t going well in our food system - and why this is a powerful opportunity for change. Big Questions Asked How can we use the principles of regeneration to heal ourselves and our planet? What can we do to make ourselves more effective storytellers? How can we help others make a commitment to their own health and the health of our planet? Is learning imprinted upon us, or are we enlightened by wisdom when we hear, see, or feel something? Why should regeneration matter to a Dad who hears this and says to himself, “I’m not a farmer,” and what roles can they take to protect and provide for their families and the planet? How much time do we have left to prevent the sixth mass extinction? Get the Full Show Notes Want access to the full show notes, including links to all resources mentioned during today's conversation? It wasn’t planned this way, but I’m grateful to be able to release so many of my interviews from Attune Experience 2019 during this chaotic and stressful time. Not only are these fun conversations a nice distraction but their emphasis on spiritual transformation and inspiration is a message the world needs right now. And if you want to see what Attune is doing in 2020, head over to attuneexperience.com to learn more. Today’s high-vibe guest is probably going to be familiar to anyone from the LA or Bay areas: Ryland Engelhart, the co-owner of Café Gratitude and the Mission Fulfillment Officer of Love Serve Remember. The original Café Gratitude was a manifestation of a visionary concept — that food, gratitude, and love are the recipes for cultivating community and a reverence for the living world. One restaurant grew into seven throughout the Bay Area, and in 2011, Ryland and his brother brought Café Gratitude to Los Angeles. All of the restaurants are amazing, by the way, and serve 100% plant-based organic cuisine. Ryland’s life purpose is to be an expression of love in action — and you really do feel this when you eat at any of their locations — but now he’s trying to express that love on an even grander scale. Empowered with new research on regenerative agriculture's power to heal our planet, Ryland co-founded Kiss the Ground, an education and advocacy NGO working to transform our food system based in Venice, California. We talk all about why we need to change our worldwide farming practices VERY SOON, the transformative potential of regenerative farming, and what Kiss the Ground is doing to teach people more about the regenerative model. “Love is not something found in a person, place or thing. It’s something that is ever present in our hearts and always available as a gift and it costs nothing to share it.”Ryland EngelhartLast week we explored the world of regenerative farming, soil health and biodiversity as critical levers to improve human health. Consolidate food security. Drawdown carbon. And backpedal climate change.Today we expound on that theme with entrepreneur, restauranteur and social activist Ryland Engelhart.Ryland is the ‘Mission Fulfillment Officer' and co-owner of Café Gratitude and Gracias Madre, a family owned group of legendary plant-based restaurants. The epicenter of California vegan cuisine & culture, it's a platform he uses to not only feed people amazing food but to cultivate community — and most importantly, inspire more gratitude into our lives and culture. In addition, Ryland is a speaker and passionate advocate for sacred commerce, community building and regenerative farming principles, which he supports as co-founder of Kiss The Ground, a non-profit that provides education regarding the connection between soil, human, and planetary health. Among its board of advisors are former podcast guests Paul Hawken, Dr. Zach Bush and David Bronner. If you enjoyed those conversations, or last week's exchange with John & Molly Chester, then you're in for a treat with Ryland. This is a conversation about the importance of soil regeneration and its impact on everything from food security and climate change reversal to improving human health. We open with Ryland’s hippie upbringing. How he learned early the philosophy of using business as a force for good — something he calls sacred commerce. We discuss how doing good — adding value to people’s lives — is not only always the right thing to do, but also the best long-term path to profits. We explore the origins, trajectory and intentionality behind his family's incredible group of restaurants — Cafe Gratitude, Gracias Madre and his sister’s Sage Plant-Based Bistros — which together form the cornerstone of plant-based dining in Los Angeles and beyond. Then we dive into the principles of conscious capitalism, the importance of regenerative farming, and the reasons why soil health is such a crucial component in the holistic equation of sustainable human, animal and planetary health. Finally we discuss his various film projects, including his documentaries May I Be Frank* and Kiss The Ground — a must see you might have heard Woody Harrelson recently raving about on Marc Maron’s podcast. But more than anything, this is a conversation about love, awareness, and the power of gratitude as a living, breathing philosophy of life. You can watch it all go down on YouTube.... On a scale of 1-10, how grateful would you say that you are every day, in each moment, and how present are you for all that you have to be grateful for? Personally, I believe that GRATITUDE is the key to true and lasting happiness, and I would humbly rate myself at a “9” on the gratitude scale. But that wasn’t always the case for me. In fact, quite the opposite. Just ask my mom. She’ll tell you that, growing up, gratitude was definitely NOT one of my strengths. It wasn’t until I learned the power that gratitude has in determining the quality of our lives that I made it a priority and the quality of my life my life has been radically transformed as a result. When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was immediately grateful (literally). For what you might be wondering? For the extraordinary adversity that I believed would provide me the opportunity to learn, grow, and become a better version of myself. On today’s podcast episode, you’ll meet one of the most genuinely grateful people I have ever met – someone whom I deeply admire – Ryland Engelhart. Ryland is the Mission Fulfillment Officer and co-owner of my absolutely favorite restaurant in the world – one that is changing the world – Café Gratitude! Today, he joins the podcast to share how to amplify gratitude and happiness in your life every single day, and how humanity can live regeneratively in relation to nature.   Get The Full Show Notes To get full access to today's show notes, including audio, transcript, and links to all the resources mentioned, visit HalElrod.com/276 You can also find a special version of the episode on the PremoCast app (iPhone only): http://blog.premocast.com/episode-276   Subscribe, Rate & Review I would love if you could subscribe to the podcast and leave an honest rating & review. “Sacred Commerce is a business built by heart” is the theme of this Women at Work conversation with Cary Mosier of Cafe Gratitude and Gracias Madre. Held at the Rose Tarlow Melrose House showroom in West Hollywood where Mosier shared the heart behind the business along with the triumphs and failures along the way. Cafe Gratitude and Gracias Madre are founded on the unique business principle that we all are connected and that the only real win is the win-win. The business practices of the Mosier family are good for the planet, their employees, their investors and customers all in one. Their concept was to create a work environment that doubled as a school of transformation for their staff as well as their customers. Founded on an experiment to find out: “What will happen if we use the workspace to cultivate the most important human values — such as love, gratitude, connection and trust?” a restaurant revolution was born.

Dita Curgus, is the Founder of Schizandu Organics. She is on a mission to bring truly natural and exceptional products to people to help them cleanse, detoxify and nourish from the inside out and the outside in. Born in Budapest, Hungary, to a home with no computers but all food “made from scratch” and put on the table from market-fresh or home-grown ingredients, she had participated in kitchen activities from very early on and started diving into books researching health-related topics at the age of 11. Her insatiable interest in science, health and longevity, as well as airplanes, led her on a journey to study plants and their healing qualities, all things mechanical, flying, and even looking into the feasibility of putting fuel cells on the latest Boeing models. While there was a time when she thought she would remain a pilot forever, after years of flying, she earned her Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and her Master’s in Aerospace Engineering at UCLA while health-coaching in the evenings and on weekends. Even doing top secret work while an engineer for 5 years has left her with a feeling of void and she ended up getting a Health-Coaching Certificate to make her counseling official. To be efficient in health-counseling she felt too limited to one-on-one sessions and smaller groups and she had a desire to reach a larger crowd to be able to help more people who suffered unnecessarily. Soon after leaving engineering altogether, in January 2016, she founded Schizandu Organics to make her dreams of helping more people and making a difference quicker a reality. Today, she has reached 61,000+ customers across the globe and her products have been the choice of high-end health-food stores, restaurants all over the U.S. and beyond including Café Gratitude, Erewhon, L.A. Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with a very special guest, international spokesperson for personal transformation and weight loss, Frank Ferrante. Featured in two major documentaries including May I Be Frank? and Hungry For Change, Frank’s resume is extensive. From an illegal narcotics distributor, a cab driver, and a general contractor to an actor, recovered alcoholic junkie, and a vegan raw foodist, Frank has had quite the journey to get where he is now and today he shares some of the lessons he learned on his journey to physical and spiritual healing. After thirty years involved with drugs and alcohol, Frank finally reached a point where he could no longer live the way he was living, but he couldn’t see a way out. He surrendered himself to God and started a 12-step program. But even when he quit drugs and alcohol, he found problems with sex and overeating. Frank found that, even when he was sober, the underlying pain that caused him to seek drugs in the first place still remained. At 300 pounds, Frank had isolated himself from those he cared about because he didn’t care about himself. After stumbling in to Café Gratitude, a raw-food restaurant, he embarked on a life-changing journey of weight loss and transformation over 42 days. Again, Frank surrendered to God and signed a contract with the owners of the restaurant that he would commit to a raw food diet, daily affirmations, and weekly colonics. After just a week and a half, Frank felt a shift in himself. He turned his personal pain into personal power by stumbling into grace. What once seemed insurmountable was within his grasp because he had help. With help from others, he recognized that he was not alone and that it was not food or drugs that were the problem, but instead his relationship to himself and to food ad drugs that needed to change.Today, Frank works to help others realize their potential for change and works to cultivate humility within himself daily. He now helps others to realize that they are not incomplete and that they need only to nurture themselves to blossom into who they were meant to be. Achieving balance in all things is key to a more present life.If you would like to reach out to Frank, you can get in touch with him at info@mayIspeakFrankly.comLISTEN TO THE PODCAST  WATCH THE PODCAST   RESOURCESFood MattersMay I Be Frank?Hungry For ChangeKris Carr
