What is it about Martha Stewart? If you want a good watch while you are playing with your Christmas yarn and pointed sticks, tune in to the Netflix biopic, Martha. Talk about a phoenix. Launching her own I.P.O. in 1999, she became the first self-made woman billionaire in American history. Five years later, she's wearing her “Coming Home Poncho” that a fellow inmate crocheted for her as she leaves a federal prison, a.k.a. “Camp Cupcake.” We have watched her rise and fall and rise again, and there's a lot to admire here. Perhaps Joan Didion said it best in her New Yorker piece: “This is not a story about a woman who made the best of traditional skills. This is a story about a woman who did her own I.P.O. This is the 'woman's pluck' story, the dust-bowl story, the burying-your-child-on-the-trail story, the I-will-never-go-hungry-again story . . . The dreams and the fears into which Martha Stewart taps are not of “feminine” domesticity but of female power, of the woman who sits down at the table with the men and, still in her apron, walks away with the chips." Joan Didion, The New Yorker, February 21 and 28, 2000.This is a Martha who is 83, and she's got an edge—she even drops an occasional f-bomb! But it's an edge that she has earned, and she's not going to sand it down or dip it in sugar. And in the midst of the triumphs and the tribulations, she's learned a few things worth listening to: “If you want to be happy for a year, get married. If you want to be happy for a decade, get a dog. If you want to be happy for life, plant a garden.” She learns something new every day, and she lives by the dictum that “when you are through changing, you are through.” This is a Martha who is perfectly human, flawed like the rest of us and weathered by experience, but still standing and inspecting her peonies. She makes us think that whatever happens, we'll survive--a message we could use right now. Speaking of transformation, of taking clown-colors and making them wearable, check out Bootie's shawl that she over-dyed with Kool-Aid. Her daughter actually wears it on a regular basis! A knitting triumph, but it didn't start out that way. Between this and Martha's story, you'll definitely find some inspiration in this episode, and a healthy snack with Martha's Lemony White Bean Hummus! Barely more than a week after a fairly uncomfortable press conference was convened to announce Gavin Wilkinson's hiring as Sporting KC's new Sporting Director, Principal Owner Michael Illig released a written statement on the SKC website stating that they have mutually parted ways. This was in response to consistent pressure from fans, business partners and key stakeholders. While it was good to see club leadership relent and fix an obvious hiring mistake, some questions remain on how we even got here in the first place. Kellyn Acosta has been one of the bigger names in MLS Free Agency this season and he is yet to sign with a team. Reporting via Tom Bogert with The Athletic has him linked with SKC as a possible destination along with the Chicago Fire and Colorado Rapids. We discuss his potential fit in KC and what the impacts could potentially be for bringing him aboard. MLS Referees are embroiled in a labor dispute with PRO Referees, the MLS funded organization that employs them. A work stoppage would undoubtedly be a bad look for a league making a lot of strides in global relevance and candidly, the league refs make peanuts compared to the vast majority of the players they are meant to adjudicate. Finally a round robin of topics including the end of Camp Cupcake and what can be taken from the friendly match that concluded it, along with some more head scratching decision making by the Current in how they manage movement of players on and off their roster. Last time out, we got into our annual Camp Cupcake roster and highlighted a couple of individuals who could have potential to make an impact in future USMNT camps. We kept it super high level and didn't make any predictions or analyze anything as they prepared for their first friendly of 2024 against Slovenia that took place over the weekend. But today, I am going to be joined once again by my good friend and host of the Pint House Soccer Stars podcast, Mr. Chris Piel, and we are truly just going to bounce around with a few topics across US Soccer. We will touch base on how this Camp Cupcake finished up, we will chat through some more transfer news as we only have about 10 days left for guys to make a move, and then we will give a couple of thoughts into other news across the American soccer landscape. Today, we will get into this Camp Cupcake roster that was released last Friday that includes 25 players, including 15 who received their first ever call up into a senior camp. The plan for today isn't to just go through player by player but more or less to highlight a few players who could have potential to make an impact with the senior team sooner rather than later. We will go through the squad as they prepare to face off against Slovenia next Saturday, January 20th at 3pm ET down in San Antonio. We will then finish off today's episode with a question or two and then wrap up as we always do with a final thought of the week. Support the show

We are back after a several week hiatus after Sporting KC dropped the bombshell that the home match against Inter Miami would be moved to Arrowhead. This obviously sent shockwaves through the SKC community, and we try to break down all the various perspectives on the move and the potential it holds for the club long term. Gadi Kinda officially left SKC for Maccabi Haifa, and the announcement video was patently absurd. MLS tried to say nah to the US Open Cup, but was rebuffed. We discuss the decision, and the rather putrid following the tournament has for most fans and how to improve that. Camp Cupcake is in full swing, and we are struggling to find the excitement. Hopefully some fun players make an impact here, but it is hard to predict who that will be, if anyone. Music by The Spin Wires
Well, it's a brand-new year, this is our first episode of 2024. And with that comes big things, big resolutions, big events happening, and overall, just a feeling of promise within American soccer. We ended the year with a bit of what we called controlled chaos as I was joined by two guests in Soccer Pints designer and contributor, Eric Paullin, and Charlotte FC's assistant coach, Brian Edwards. Today is a big day though, depending on how you look at it. In a couple of hours, we will get the roster release for our annual January national team camp, commonly referred to as Camp Cupcake. I will be joining Gregg Berhalter and other media members for a conference call to discuss the roster and learn more around the decisions to bring certain players into this camp and really get a better understanding for the vision of the entire US program to start the year. So, for today's episode, we aren't going to look at that roster because it hasn't been released yet and I don't want to speculate on any potential call-ups at this point. We will record another episode to go over that roster release and will release that next week as well. But for today, we have quite a bit of things to discuss, including recent transfer news for several USMNT players now that the January transfer window is open. We are going to talk about the recent form of certain national teamers who just seem to be hitting stride week after week and improving consistently at the moment. And then we will bounce around and answer a question or two and give a final thought for the week before we wrap things up. Support the show

A conversation about Brad's life. Born in Boston, he worked for giant Swiss bank UBS until 2005. Following his resignation, he blew the whistle to US authorities on practices enabling US citizens to evade billions of dollars in taxes. Though his whistleblowing caused UBS to pay huge sums of money to the IRS, and triggered large-scale reform of the Swiss banking industry, Brad was the only person involved who went to jail for these practices. He served 30 months in a prison nicknamed Camp Cupcake. Whilst incarcerated he discovered that (due to a law introduced in late 2006) the IRS were going to reward him with a percentage of the money he helped them recoup. He received $104m as a first payment. Today he lives between Malta and Italy and still rails against the corruption he believes is endemic in America and the world at large. Those are the bare bones of the story. Discover much more in our interview. Brad's website: https://lucifersbanker.com Episode guide: 3.27-18.40 Ubringing, education, first finance job in State Street, Boston. Beginning his behaviour of standing up against employers. Brad is fired and decides to move to Switzerland. 18.40-32.20 His time and work in Switzerland and US before blowing the whistle. 32.20-42.29 The background of Swiss banking and how it related to the US. Tax evasion. Turning point - the three-page memo. Resigning and deciding to become a whistleblower. 42.49-54.20 Motives. Noble act/Revenge/Seeking reward? Thoughts on whistleblowers in contrast to criminals and how society feels about them. 54.20-1.01.59 Back to his story. Approaching different US Authorities. Deferred prosecution for UBS. Prison for Brad. 1.01.59-1.17.14 Time in prison. Whilst there discovering he would receive $104m. Thoughts on extreme wealth. Tax avoidance vs evasion. Being single. Charitable acts. 1.17.14-1.28.05 What changed in Swiss banking as a result of his actions? How he sees his role now. Thoughts on corporate corruption. How did UBS not see his whistleblowing coming? 1.28.05-1.42.44 What would it take to stop tax evasion in the world? More thoughts on corruption. US-Swiss relationship. Does he reflect happily on his journey? Has he ever feared for his life after upsetting these powerful people? Recommending his book. Rojonah "Ro" Harris returns to T2Q to discuss in more detail about her time spent in federal prison for tax fraud. She's very open about her life experiences, but now she gives us the scoop on federal prison. It's not Camp Cupcake like people say it is. David Coogan is the editor of “Writing Our Way Out” written by former jail inmates, exploring the conditions, traps and turning points on their paths to imprisonment, as well as the redemptive power of writing. Jazz musician Antonio Garcia composed a musical piece “Open Minds: Music that Mends,” that reflects the book’s themes of social justice, healing, self-reflection and redemption. Music performed by the VCU Commonwealth Singers, directed by Dr. Erin Freeman. And: Josh Iddings looks at the history of writings from prison and how prison literature can humanize the image of the prisoner. Later in the show: Conversations about prison tend to focus on incarcerated men in urban areas. Bonnie Zare takes us inside a rural Wyoming women’s prison to understand the place that some women call “Camp Cupcake.”
Sam sits down with Geoff Cameron and Alejandro Bedoya to discuss life in the Coronaverse; how they first bonded at Camp Cupcake, became besties playing outside the US and the secret for discussing politics from opposing perspectives without getting worked up (politicians in the US could learn something); living with Klinsmann's draconian dietary restrictions and the time Clint Dempsey said "eff that noise"; Ale's fascinating journey through Europe where he played in Old Firm darbies and met his amateur (slash unwitting) IG model wife; a massive low but also plenty of highs from playing with USMNT; what wise words they imparted upon The Babyjesus; and their business partnership that just might revolutionize the art world.

The meat of this episode is Michelle and Tyler's starting XI made up of characters from The Hangover, complete with captains and managers (and a mascot!). Finally a brief discussion on some of the news around the USMNT, from Camp Cupcake to the much anticipated return of the Bundesliga and the Bundesliga Boys.

Stacey Houston (George Mason University) has spent his career looking at the complex web between education, health, and the justice system. He says kids who interact in some way with the justice system—even if it’s just living near a justice system facility—have worse health and educational outcomes. Plus: The laws affecting indentured servants and enslaved people were constantly evolving during the earliest years of America. Allison Madar (Virginia Humanities) says the colonists had a culture of violence toward enslaved people and the laws they designed to control slaves also enhanced their power over women and mixed-race servants. Later in the show: Conversations about prison tend to focus on incarcerated men in urban areas. Bonnie Zare (Virginia Tech) takes us inside a rural Wyoming women’s prison to understand the experiences of what some women call “Camp Cupcake.”

We have a super-sized episode of Filibuster for your Thanksgiving commutes, and that is our gift to you. We start the episode off with Jason's misery about Maryland in the College Cup. We then dive straight into the news of Jurgen Klinsmann's firing, which happened mere hours before we sat down to record. We all give our answers as to whether or not he should have been fired, talk about Sunil Gulati's responsibility in all of this, and talk about the probably hiring of Bruce Arena and ask what will he do with the upcoming Camp Cupcake. We then move into the second segment with D.C. United news, including the great joy of Luciano Acosta's re-signing. We then get into Goat or Fox, with Kennedy Igboananike, Jared Jeffrey, Alhaji Kamara, Taylor Kemp, and Chris Korb on the docket for this episode. We also ask how Klinsmann's firing might affect the national team call-ups of D.C. United players. Finally, we get into tonight's MLS Cup playoffs, previewing the all-Canadian Eastern Conference final between Toronto FC and Montreal Impact as well as the Western Conference final between the Seattle Sounders and the Colorado Rapids. Give it a listen!
There isn't that much D.C. United news to talk about, but Filibuster we are and so Filibuster we must. Jason, Adam, and Ben talk first about United's trade for Patrick Nyarko, breaking down his role and what United gave up to get him. We also talk about United's draft priorities now that they have a speedy winger on board. We then welcome on Alicia Rodriguez of The Goat Parade to talk about LAFC. We discuss their recent badge and color reveal, judge the local reaction to the new team, and talk about the supporter's that are already in place. We also ask about former D.C. player John Thorrington, now an executive for LAFC, as well as their 25 owners. We end by asking about Mia Hamm's promise to bring a women's soccer team to LA as a part of this group. After Alicia leaves, we move on to talk about Camp Cupcake and the D.C. United players that are there. We talk about the mix of players Jurgen Klinsmann decided to call in, and wonder why he brought Jermaine Jones along. Finally, we open up the Twitterbox to answer your questions, including who will be the next D.C. United player in the MLS Best XI and about old players entering MLS. Give it a listen!

Adam is back from his scouting trip to Alaska, and Filibuster is back in your ears. We start off by talking all things D.C. United preseason trialists: Andrew Driver and David Estrada, Rocket Rod Dyachenko, the center backs (Futty Danso, Rauwshawn McKenzie, and Sean St Ledger), and the goalkeeping trialists that are Diego Restrepo, Richard McCallum, and Riccardo Anedda. We then talk about injuries suffered this season (Eddie Johnson and Michael Seaton) and at the end of last season (Luis Silva, Chris Rolfe, Andrew Dykstra, and Conor Doyle). It could be an interesting forward pairing to start the year if these players don't start getting health (but most of them are doing so). When then talk about Perry Kitchen, Steve Birnbaum, and the USMNT's Camp Cupcake. They play Chile tonight, and they may do so in a strange formation. Is Jurgen Klinsmann actually just Tom Soehn? Finally, we introduce a new segment entitled "Metro Offseason Failure" before taking some of your Twitterbox questions. Give it a listen!
