The landscape of cybersecurity training and collaboration is changing, interactive education sessions and cross team communication is key. Building a security culture and staying ahead of the modern threats has never been more important. Today's guest is Howard Goodman, Senior Technical Director at Skybox Security. With over 20 years of experience Howard has become a well known figure in the cybersecurity world, he combines strategic planning with hands-on application across many industries. In this episode we talk about; security culture, the evolution of cybersecurity training and how Howard got phished during COVID. We also cover organisational challenges, best practices and the future of cybersecurity. Show Notes: [00:48] Howard has a doctorate in cyber operations from Dakota State University. Besides working for Skybox Security, he's also an adjunct professor teaching graduate courses about cyber security. [01:48] Howard shares a phishing experience when he and his wife were selling on eBay during COVID. [03:34] If the pros can fall for something, regular people can too. We need to be on our game 100% of the time. [04:53] We talk about opportunities for adversaries to get in when companies have large cybersecurity teams with a lot of moving parts. [05:29] A lot of people ignore phishing attempts instead of reporting them.  [06:04] It comes down to organizations training their people properly. Cyber security training is becoming more interesting, because the boring stuff just doesn't hold people's attention.  [10:13] When talking about threats, they focus on the exposure side and the exploitability side. With most businesses, functionality comes before security. [12:47] Formal testing is required before upgrading security patches to make sure that they don't break down the whole system. [13:47] The importance of being able to leverage other security controls while testing patches. Teams need to be able to communicate and act fast. [14:52] Knowing about potential risk is the only way to be proactive. [16:36] Looking at costs and gaps in technology. Failures are often due to a breakdown in communication. [19:33] The approach of starting out security first. [25:08] Best practices include cross-training. Working together and training together. Organizations need to run simulations and see how they react as an organization. [31:06] Skybox talks to organizations about gaps in security. After that, skills can be acquired and built upon to teach people how to protect themselves further. However, we mustn't let our guard down when it comes to our brains and minds coming under attack. Like anti-virus software needing updates to protect against the latest cyber threats, our minds also require ongoing learning to maintain psychological security in addition to adequate rest, play, and sleep. Robert (“Bob”) Sinner is President of SB&B Foods, the largest grower of “identity preserved (IP), non-GMO food-grade” soybeans in North Dakota. In this episode, Bob tells us how his family's 5th generation farm identified a need for soybeans in Asia and how he pursued and won that business.  Bob's father George served as governor of North Dakota from 1985 to 1992. During his tenure, George Sinner resolutely tried to attract Japanese investment into the state, which inspired Bob to help US companies export into Japan to develop relationships and accelerate the creation of new opportunities.  To start, Bob embarked upon a trade mission to Japan, alongside a hired interpreter. Once there, he found mature markets looking for a consistent and reliable supply of soy beans, the agricultural product needed to produce uniform product like tofu and soy milk.  At Rapport International, we encourage our clients to employ interpreters as “cultural conduits” – native-speaking interpreters are valuable sources of in-country information. In that vein, upon his return, Bob enlisted the help of North Dakota State University professor Dr. Sam Chang, originally from Taiwan, who had previous experience working with soybeans.  Together with a visiting Taiwanese trade team, the group conducted sensory testing, a scientific method for evaluating a food's characteristics – taste, texture, odor, and appearance, for example – to determine which product was of the highest quality. After their visit, the Taiwanese group donated the sensory testing equipment to the N. Dakota State University, which is still in use today!  SB&B is now operating in 16 countries, most of them within Asia because of the high per capita consumption of soybeans. Its customers manufacture over 25 different foods – including the Japanese “natto,” a healthy, fermented food that helps with heart and brain functioning.  Bob says their success is due simply to always paying attention to what the customers want and catering to those wants. The best marketing, he adds, is accomplished by:  Being yourself  Staying honest  Treating people like you want to be treated  Knowing your products  Understanding local culture  Building trusted relationships  His biggest, ongoing challenge involves shipping containers. Most containers coming into the US are 40 feet long and carry bulky yet lightweight consumer products into metropolitan areas.  Shipping heavy agricultural products from a rural area to Asia, where they prefer smaller containers, presents a twofold problem. First, containers are parked in US metro areas and require transport to rural areas. Second, the smaller containers Asian buyers want are closer to 20 feet long, half the size of standard containers, because they unload within smaller and tighter spaces. Bob continues to work with US and foreign officials to find solutions.  His best advice to new exporters:  Understand the market  Operate under a set of core values that include integrity, honesty, fairness, and trust  Be patient yet persistent in building trust  Keep educating yourself  Reap the rewards!  Listen to the full episode to learn more.    Links Email: Rsinner@SB-B.com  Website: https://sb-b.com/   LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/bob-sinner-a058322a     Connect with Wendy - https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendypease/  Music: Fiddle-De-Dee by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com

Much of the discussion surrounds the famous 1962 Rose Bowl—in which the faculty of Ohio State University voted not to send the football team to the celebrated New Year's game because it would distract from the academic mission of the university. The result was a riot in Columbus, Ohio, with lots of property damage and in which faculty members and the university president were burned in effigy. Sioux Falls-based entrepreneur and philanthropist Matt Paulson joins Isn't it Lovely? this week to explore the intersection of business, faith, and community! Tracy and Rachel take copious notes as Matt shares his thoughts on everything from pendulum shifts in the workforce and the onset of a content recession to post-secondary educational trends and the rise of AI. Matt reveals the ways his unexpected foray into a theological seminary degree influenced his leadership style and expounds upon the impact his faith has had on his personal integrity, as well as the ways he conducts business and invests in the community. Tracy gets the scoop on the empowering organization Startup Sioux Falls and divulges that she was once an audience member at the Jay Leno show and had a hilarious interaction with him (which Rachel tried in vain to find for the show notes, much to her chagrin); Rachel and Matt discuss the lasting joy of investing in projects that do good for people, versus the fleeting happiness of materialistic pursuits.  Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Glen Ford, along with my co-host Nellie Bailey. Coming up: The Hispanic community has long been targeted by racists in the United States, but that doesn’t mean that anti-Black racism is not a problem among Hispanics; a new article highlights the internationalist thinking of women in the Black Panther Party; and, the coup in Bolivia – the fingerprints of the United States are all over it.  Supporters of the nation’s best known political prisoner are gearing up for an important event, December 7th, in Philadelphia. Suzanne Ross, of International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu Jamal, explains.  Benjamin Young is an interesting young scholar. He’s a professor in Cyber Leadership and Intelligence at Dakota State University, and was awarded a doctoral degree from the U.S. Naval War College. Considering his background, Young has unconventional interests: His doctoral studies centered on North Korea, and he recently wrote an essay for Soul, the Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture and Society. The essay was titled, “Imagining Revolutionary Feminism: Communist Asia and the Women of the Black Panther Party.  Hispanics surpassed Blacks as the largest minority in the United States in the 21st Century. But minority status doesn’t necessarily mean that anti-Blackness is not a problem among Hispanics. We spoke with Janvieve Williams Comrie, a longtime activist who says racial justice and women’s reproductive rights are closely related. The United States has been hostile to the government of Bolivia ever since Evo Morales was elected as that country’s first AmerIndian president. This month, right-wing forces and the military staged a coup against President Morales, forcing him into exile in Mexico. A white woman politician from a minority party declared herself president.  Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I'm Glen Ford, along with my co-host Nellie Bailey. Coming up: The Hispanic community has long been targeted by racists in the United States, but that doesn't mean that anti-Black racism is not a problem among Hispanics; a new article highlights the internationalist thinking of women in the Black Panther Party; and, the coup in Bolivia – the fingerprints of the United States are all over it.  Supporters of the nation's best known political prisoner are gearing up for an important event, December 7th, in Philadelphia. Suzanne Ross, of International Concerned Family and Friends of Mumia Abu Jamal, explains.  Benjamin Young is an interesting young scholar. He's a professor in Cyber Leadership and Intelligence at Dakota State University, and was awarded a doctoral degree from the U.S. But minority status doesn't necessarily mean that anti-Blackness is not a problem among Hispanics. We spoke with Janvieve Williams Comrie, a longtime activist who says racial justice and women's reproductive rights are closely related. The United States has been hostile to the government of Bolivia ever since Evo Morales was elected as that country's first AmerIndian president. This month, right-wing forces and the military staged a coup against President Morales, forcing him into exile in Mexico. A white woman politician from a minority party declared herself president. Almost immediately, the Trump administration recognized the coup government – which is no surprise to Alex Main, of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, in Washington.
