A Thank You and an Introduction to John Jenrette Our Congressman and his early years

Nixon and Watergate

This episode is a housekeeping episode to address several circumstances that we felt needed to be addressed as we moved forward with our documentary presentation.  Former Congressman John Jenrette passed away just as we were completing this series of shows. It was such sad news because anyone who knew former Congressman John Jenrette could not help but like him.  It left us with a few dilemmas, mainly that at various times we talked about the congressman in the present tense. I felt like addressing the passing here was the best way to address that issue and then allowing the documentary to speak for itself. We also wanted to say thank you to Ben Burroughs of Coastal Carolina University who allowed us the use of his three hours of oral history interviews with Former Congressman John Jenrette. This may be hard to believe given John Jenrette's rather large place in the collective memory of our area but there was actually not that much material readily available about his time in office nor the scandal that ended his career. It had all occurred prior to the widespread use of VCR's and long before the internet. A lesson I learned in this season was that if you were not a President nor served during the modern age of technology, there would actually be very little available to tell your story.  This was also true of former Congressmen John McMillan and Ed Young. This season of documentary episodes would literally not have been possible without the use of the materials from Ben Burroughs and Coastal Carolina University, so we wanted to say a special thank you to them for the use of the oral histories. We also want to thank some other sources for their materials too, all of which were vitally important to the show, John Bonsignor and Paul Gable for the interview on Talking Politics, Greg Everett and his three interviews from Carolina People, Dianne Devaughn Stokes and her Inside Out interview with HTC, and the campaign video interview from the Dick Elliot retrospective.  It was also very important to be able to use the book "Capitol Steps and Missteps" written by John Clark and Cookie VanSice, two long time Jenrette staff members,  as a guide for much of the Documentary presentations as well. I am personally very proud of this our 10th season. It is the most personal of all the materials we have done because we knew and were friends with former Congressman John Jenrette, and the show focuses so much attention on Horry County, South Carolina. It is a place of many colorful, and interesting people and features. This is my home, and I am proud of it, and have enjoyed this opportunity to introduce it to you on our podcast. I hope you enjoy the shows. Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

This week, I sat down with Jim Aidala, Senior Government Affairs Consultant at B&C and its consulting affiliate, The Acta Group. We discuss what to expect in 2023 from Capitol Hill and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP) when it comes to key chemical matters. Jim is, of course, one of the country's most talented pesticide experts and, as a former Assistant Administrator of what is now OCSPP and a founding member of the Capitol Steps, offers laser-focused insights on chemicals with wit and flair. We cover a lot of territory -- EPA staffing deficits, a divided Congress, and the many daunting legal, science, and policy issues that this OCSPP is tasked with solving, or at least managing. Sometimes, the good guys and gals win. Sometimes, the bad guys lose. This is one of those times. The historic SFC Heath Robinson PACT Act for veterans passed the Senate by a vote of 86-11.  But it was wild, it was emotional, it was dramatic, it was infuriating, and it was inspiring. It showed what is still possible in America if a group of concerned citizens are united, focused and motivated. And in this episode, we'll take you inside one of the most dramatic and important political dramas in years.  Our guest in this episode was a key leader in making that victory happen. When, Senator Pat Toomey and the other Republican Senators that stood in the way of the PACT Act, he united the troops, stood alongside Jon Stewart, helped to rally an unstoppable force of veterans, and ultimately emerged triumphant. He's a true leader and one we're proud to call a friend of the show. He's a humanitarian, an activist, and a badass superhero: Matt Zeller (@MattCZeller). Matt is one of the leading advocates for veterans, for Afghan allies, and for America. He's a combat veteran and Army Major that made it out of Afghanistan alive only because of the courage of his Afghan interpreter. And he's been paying it forward ever since. Matt is the courageous Co-Founder of No One Left Behind, aTruman National Security Fellow, the author of Watches Without Time: An American Soldier in Afghanistan, and the newest member of the powerhouse team at Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). Matt joined us on this show for Episode 138 and Episode 127 to sound the alarm about the imminent collapse of Afghanistan and the chaos that would follow. And now he's back to break down the fight for the PACT Act–and update us all on the terrible state of Afghanistan one year after the disasterous American withdrawl. Matt was part of the veterans “Fire Watch”, a group of advocates camped out on the Senate steps pressuring the hold-out senators to pass the PACT Act. They served as America's conscience–and inspired people worldwide. Matt has been on countless TV and radio shows, inside the chamber for the pivotal vote, and he's somehow, still standing. Still fighting. And he's back to break it all down for us in compelling detail. This is a pod that will leave you inspired–and hopeful.  Every episode of Independent Americans hosted by Paul Rieckhoff @PaulRieckhoff) breaks down the most important news stories–and offers light to contrast the heat of other politics and news shows. It's independent content for independent Americans. Always with a unique focus on national security, foreign affairs and military and veterans issues. Once upon a Time three staffers for a United States Senator decided to put on a little Christmas show, just a little thing with song parodies and skits, just for entertainment. They're little show was a hit and they endd up putting on that show for a few other small private groups. Before long, a few other Hill staffers join them and they're little events. Became bigger events more organized events with bigger audiences The year was 1981 and that's how the capital steps was formed. And over the next four decades. The capital steps became the nation's premier political satire group. THE SIDNEY ST. JAMES SHOW

Season 2 Episode 8 A BLAST FROM THE PAST – Songs that Form the Soundtrack of our Teenage Dreams Why do the songs we heard as a teenager sound sweeter than anything we have ever listened to as an adult? In recent years, psychologists and neuroscientists have done plenty of research and have confirmed that these oldies but goodies hold disproportionate power over our emotions. And researchers have uncovered evidence that suggests our brains bind us to the music that we heard as teenagers more tightly than anything we'll ever hear as adults—a connection that doesn't weaken whatsoever as we age. Musical nostalgia, in other words, isn't just a cultural phenomenon: It's a neutronic command. And no matter how sophisticated our tastes might otherwise grow to be, our brains may stay jammed on those songs we obsessed over during the high drama during the years of our adolescence. But memories are meaningless without emotion—and aside from love and drugs, nothing spurs an emotional reaction like music. Many research studies show that our favorite songs stimulate our brain's pleasure circuit, which releases an influx of dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and other neurochemicals that make us feel good. A lot of big words, right! The more we like a song, the more we get treated to neurochemical bliss, flooding our brains. Music lights these sparks of neutronic activity in everyone. But when we were young, the sparks turned into a fireworks show. Between the ages of 10 and 22, our brains undergo rapid neurological development—and the music we love during that decade seems to get wired into our lobes for the rest of our lives. When we make neural connections to a song, we also create a strong memory trace that becomes overloaded with heightened emotion, thanks partly to a surplus of youthful growth hormones. These hormones tell our brains that everything is incredibly important—especially the songs that form the soundtrack to our teenage dreams during those early years. 1995 – The Decade of the 90s - KARS for Kids, Dallas Cowboys Inauguration St. Edwards Training Camp, Austin Live Stock Show and Rodeo, Walk of Life on Capitol Steps, Broken Spoke, Sidney St. James and Fiftie's Fun on Sunday Nights at KOOL99 Radio, and many more functions. Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Donald Trump is out, and Joe Biden is in, after decades of striving for the highest office in the land. The 46th President will be inaugurated today at noon, at the age of 78. Meanwhile, in New York City, the police are busy violently re-establishing the status quo, by arresting essential union employees outside of a picket line protest on Monday in Queens and battling with Black Lives Matter protesters elsewhere in the city. And lastly, the Democrats have put together the first potentially big piece of legislation of their new majority term, a sweeping voting rights bill that could re-enfranchise millions of formerly incarcerated people. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: By the time you hear this, Donald Trump will have just a few hours left as president of the United States. Everything else aside, that’s great to say out loud. He’s done! He’s gone! That means the big day has finally come for Joe Biden, who has been half-heartedly seeking to be President for decades at this point. Biden will be inaugurated in the middle of a heavily militarized green zone on the Capitol Steps at noon, at the age of 78, and will then retire to the White House, where his Peloton bike will probably be waiting for him if it clears the cybersecurity guys. D.C. is a ghost town right now, as federal authorities learned their lesson about domestic insurrection about two weeks too late and have locked the place down. At the moment, there don’t appear to be any big plans for right wing protests, but we’ll have to see how the day goes. Trump, for his part, is going out with a whimper. In a video address on Tuesday night, he listed his so-called accomplishments and vowed that the movement he started was quote “only just beginning.” endquote. How lasting his impact is remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that he inspired horrible things during his time in office. And now he’s gone -- by the time you hear this, he’ll probably be boarding his last Air Force One flight to Florida before he loses his plane privileges, slinking off back to the familiar comforts of Mar A Lago coronavirus superspreader swamp parties, where, with any luck, he’ll rot away quickly. Cops Enforce Status Quo In New York City, however, it’s business as usual. And by that we mean the cops are beating up essential workers and cracking down on protesters. This is the status quo, and a sure sign of what we have to look forward to for the next four years. On Monday night, for instance, the NYPD arrested several peaceful striking workers at the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market in New York City. The workers there were demanding a small raise of $1 per hour, with an extra 60 cents thrown in for health care benefits. Their bosses had offered them 32 cents. For some context, these workers are the backbone of the largest produce market in the country, many of whom make just $40,000 a year despite union pay minimums, which is far from sufficient to support a family in New York. The NYPD responded, and early on Tuesday morning, the union representing the striking workers posted video of cops rushing the picket line and making arrests as strikers chanted “hands up, don’t shoot.” This may be shocking, but it’s not really outside of the norm. Also on Monday night, the NYPD cracked down on Martin Luther King Jr. Day protests at City Hall Park, attacking protesters with batons and making violent arrests. The cops aren’t going to change their behavior unless they’re forced to. And despite the changeup coming in Washington, it looks like the rest of the country is going to go on just like it was. Democrats Try For Voting Rights But lastly, some encouraging news: The Democrats are reportedly setting up their first chance to flex their new majority in the House and Senate with a sweeping voting rights bill, introduced on Tuesday in the Senate by Oregon’s Jeff Merkley. The Senate Bill, which is called the For the People Act, is a close mirror of a concurrent bill introduced earlier this month in the House. If the Democrats can push it through, it could be one of the first major victories of the Biden administration. The bill would do a couple crucial things: make online, automatic, and same-day voter registration mandates for every state, and also restore voting rights to anyone who is not currently incarcerated. That alone would re-enfranchise millions of voters, and combined with new, easier ways to register could strike a devastating blow to the GOP’s key voter suppression tactics in upcoming elections. The test now becomes whether the Democrats can wield their new power to pass laws effectively enough to get this through both the House and Senate. McConnell isn’t going anywhere, and it’s a given that he’ll use every dirty trick at his disposal to keep these bills from becoming law, because he knows if he does it’ll throw more congressional races into the mix despite the GOP’s constant gerrymandering. What we’ll learn soon as well is how much energy the new president will put behind the bill. Here’s hoping he comes out of the gate strong on this one. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: Speaking of the Senate and passing bills: remember yesterday’s story about current Majority Leader Schumer already kowtowing to former Majority Leader McConnell? It just got worse: McConnell is reportedly pressing to get a guarantee that Democrats won’t end the filibuster in the two parties agreement for how the split Senate will work. The United States Passed 400,000 coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, the last full day of Trump’s disastrous term. He previously claimed that he’d have done a good job if he kept deaths to 100 or 200,000. Those tragic numbers speak for themselves. Senator Josh Hawley, last seen egging on the riot that stormed the Capitol building on January 6, used his time today to delay confirmation of Joe Biden’s pick for the Department of Homeland Security. To be fair, the DHS probably shouldn’t exist in the first place, but it’s good to know which side Hawley is still on: the one that’s actively seeking a coup. And finally, Trump released his final list of pardons and grants of clemency on Tuesday. The list is mostly a good lineup of cases that have been pushed by criminal justice advocates for years, perhaps in an attempt to give the big guy a little goodwill as he exits office. True to form, though, Trump reportedly had to be talked out of handing out pardons to his own kids and Republican lawmakers on his last day in office. SPOKEN WORD WITH ELECTIONICS #41, Remembering the KKK Riot on MLK Day in Denver, 1992 Hi, everyone, welcome back to the show. This week, it's impossible to not discuss White Nationalism (or my joke for it: "What" Nationalism) – And during this week celebrating MLK Day, I feel inclined to talk about the formative role of the KKK on my mind, growing up as a goth/punk in Denver in the 1990s. The short version of this is "hate has happened before", it will get bad, AND it will go away again. I say this because my parents had their experiences with hate in the 40s and 60s, it went away, then I had my experiences in the 90s and it went away. It's always here, just less represented through position. So it's a less urgent worry about this current strain of the problem. The Feds are clearly on it, too. "What Nationalism" and "What Power" is Fucked. Contrarians will disagree and say NOPE, this is the worst the White Nationalist threat has ever been. But I'll say that's a narrow view of a longer running problem in the country. I actually was in a race riot in Denver in 1992, and that's what this episode will discuss. My view is more of a Comic-Con one. We've always had hateful unhappy people who find "what power" through acting up in Nazi Cosplay. But even if this month's insurrection looked awful and horrifying, it compares very little to the Klan's uprising in power in the 1990s, including its own Hitler Youth component of occupying high schools and turning football players and other students into KKK recruiters. I refer to this article as an example: https://sentinelcolorado.com/news/auroran-the-ghost-of-shawn-slater/ I was a part of the counterculture of Denver in my teens and we all knew many people who were in the KKK, we knew them from home room and we knew girls who dated them. This was the basic state of punk at the time. Skinheads and anti-racists all went to the same dance clubs, music stores, and coffee shops. And so when a riot happened in Denver on January 20 1992, I unsurprisingly recognized a bunch of the KKK supporters on the Capitol Steps as people in the punk community. It was a terribly depressing day, chronicled here: https://denverite.com/2018/01/12/denver-martin-luther-king-day-1992/ and in video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hm0J8RgRAo4 Of course, Hate did not win out in time. Other punks fought back against the KKK violently, and Klan connections to Denver's punk and goth community was largely a shameful secret. Most people didn't tolerate hate in any way, but my highschool years, age 14-18, was one when nearly everyone knew at least one KKK member or someone dating a skinhead, or some other dismal bullshit. I guess you could call them Klansboys, more accurately. Or Aryan Doof. And most of them grew out of it. But I don't believe the same can be said now with What Nationalism. The Klan was far more ubiquitous. Perhaps discussing the Klan of the 1990s is a useful way to prevent this current problem from expanding into worse territory, too. This is not saying punks and KKK are the same thing, it's more complicated. But here's a piece on the problem in the 1990s, presented optimistically about the problem of today. And an excitement about a new Administration in Washington in less than a week. Thank the lord.

Get ready for another eventful week as statehouses across the country and the Capitol beef up security and prepare for protests and possible violence leading up to the inauguration of Joe Biden. We will also be seeing another round of pardons from President Trump, with a possible self-pardon. Ginger Gibson, deputy Washington digital editor at NBC News, joins us for this and what Biden plans to do in his first days in office. Next, a large study of patients that have had COVID-19 shows that six months later, more than three quarters of them were still experiencing at least one lingering symptom. The most common issue was ongoing exhaustion, followed by muscle weakness and difficulty sleeping. Pam Belluck, health and science writer at the NY Times, joins us for the continued health issues covid survivors face. Finally, the pandemic may have fundamentally changed access to entertainment and possibly for the better. The live events industry has suffered under health restrictions and forced many events to go virtual. While live-streamed events can't replace the experience or financial benefits, it has opened events to wider audiences and will probably be part of the mix going forward. Emily Yahr, entertainment reporter at the Washington Post, joins us for how virtual events may be here to stay.
