Værterne er Jacob Grum-Schwensen, seniorrådgiver i CfL og Rasmus Thomsen, CEO og Partner i IS IT A BIRD.

Ellis Yan is back to finish telling the story of his career, starting back in 1979 as the Chinese government begins to emphasize quality of life for its citizens Ellis was in school to become an accountant and working in a computer lab (this was in the punch-card era of computing, just in case you thought Ellis was ever behind the cutting edge). He tells the story of how he met his wife, made friends with a man called Big Buddha and how he and his brother started a company in 1986, making MR16s when they were still 4 dollars per unit. He explains how he managed to make the right moves in the right places and the right times - selling unpatented, manually-blown spiral CFLs from a factory that took up every piece of land he could buy in Shanghai to Home Depot in the months after California suffered historic blackouts. Once we caught up to the present we talked about the future of lighting - purpose-built luminaires, becoming more than just a source of light, and more. He also shares his thoughts about working with family, offers anecdotes about his father’s odd way of offering advice, and some insight into Chinese politics.
In this episode, we talked to Ryan Blaser (https://testmyhome.com/ryan-blaser), a specialist in EMF’s. He was featured on previous episodes, EMFs and Environmental Stressors and EMFs Revisited. We talk about all the synthetic materials that surround us in our homes, adversely affecting our health by off-gassing harmful frequencies. We focus on the harm that can come from artificial lighting. We discuss the adverse effects of too much exposure to light from screens, CFLs, and fluorescent lights, explaining how it has proven to cause sleep disorders, ADD and ADHD, depression, seizures, melanomas of the eye, etc. We talk about how artificial lights can alter our circadian rhythms, talking about their potential influence on adrenal fatigue, cortisol production, and mitochondrial function, as demonstrated by the 2pm slump. We give suggestions for reducing exposure to artificial blue light and getting more exposure to natural lights. We talk about ways to reduce screen time or make it more healthy (through screen time apps or apps like https://justgetflux.com/). We discuss addictions to digital media because of artificial, immediate, endorphin-producing rewards. We talk about how social media and gaming are shaping social interactions. We talk about the rewards of outdoor activity, as well as the benefits of media fasts (including how we have included it in our liver reset program at Provo Health). We urge parents to consider the development of the brain chemistry of your kids, and limit their screen time accordingly. We invite you to keep the windows open for a couple hours every day to flush out stale air and harmful particulates. We give you an important tip to open the window and use the exhaust fan when cooking with a gas stove to reduce carbon monoxide exposure. We advise that you change your HVAC filters at least every 3-4 months, and look for a quality filter with a MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rating of at least 13. We recommend that you avoid all chemical or synthetic fragrances like Febreze. We recommend you look up and review the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) of all household products you use. We discuss how, while some are only concerned with high concentrations of toxic ingredients, the micro doses we receive across all the synthetic products are making us sicker than we’ve ever been before. Products are never tested in combinations like these -- only individually. We talk about titanium dioxide, used in beauty products, and even supplements, and how it can cause gut inflammation and other diseases. We warn that synthetic materials can be endocrine-disruptors, stunting growth in children and causing infertility and hormonal imbalances in growing people. We talk about the micro toxins that can come from molds, and how easily mold can develop in our homes. We’re Spending Too Much Time Indoors in a Synthetic Environment 2:09Ideal Lighting For Optimal Health; Reducing Screen Time 19:27Other Tips For the Indoor Generation 36:40Tips to Boost the Immune System 56:50“The problem is a lot of homes these days are built with unnatural building products, synthetic products, products that don’t breathe, that off-gas VOC’s (Volatile organic compounds). So, one of the big ones is lighting -- you know, unnatural lighting. Our eyes need the sun. And when we use these unnatural lights -- like CFLs that flicker, and they have liquid mercury in them -- they put off EMSs. And then fluorescent lights the same way. That’s a big one. And then the chemicals that we bring into the house. All of our cosmetics, beauty supplies, all of the furniture we bring in is off-gassing. And since Covid has gone on, some people aren’t leaving their house at all.” 6:24Become a Member! http://gutsy.ch/membershipSocialwww.mygutsyhealth.comhttps://www.instagram.com/gutsy_mom/@provohealth@gutsy_mom
Do you still use a lot of CFLs and incandescent light bulbs in your home? LEDs use about 40% and 85% less energy than CFLs and incandescents, respectively, and LEDs can operate for up to 50,000 hours before replacement! Switching to all LEDs can provide huge savings for your electricity bill!
We're still deep in the lockdown and the Earth911 team gathers from the far corners of the U.S. to discuss how to improve our personal and community sustainability as we emerge from the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Earth911's Sarah Lozanova, Mitch Ratcliffe and our producer, Doug Mackey, talk about the increased recycling reported by cities, as well as the disappointing news that people are not cleaning and sorting recyclables -- contamination rates stay stuck between 20 percent and 25 percent in many areas. The Recycling Partnership reports similar results from its recent survey of programs in Washington, Oregon, and California. But the Great Pause has shown that when people stop commuting and flying, significant changes in the environment can be seen. It's proof that all our small changes can add up, the question is, will we embrace this opportunity to change as the world awakes after the pandemic? We have ideas to share about how to extend the short-term changes you make in response to COVID-19 beyond the end of the lockdown. Simple changes at home, such as using rags instead of paper towels, reducing your household food waste, and rethinking when and how to travel can contribute to postive changes. And we talk about the changing way people will work as society adapts to life without a coronavirus vaccine for at least 12 to 18 months. We also answer Earthling Questions about how to recycle tires, where to recycle marble construction waste, and the safe and successful way to recycle compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs).Join the conversation and share your thoughts with the community in our Earthling Forum.

In this week's Five Good Questions, we're interviewing Matt Ridley about his new book How Innovation Works. Matt Ridley's books have sold over a million copies, been translated into 31 languages and won several awards. His TED talk "When Ideas Have Sex" has been viewed more than two million times. He writes a weekly column in The Times (London) and writes regularly for the Wall Street Journal. As Viscount Ridley, he was elected to the House of Lords in February 2013. He also served on the science and technology select committee. With BA and DPhil degrees from Oxford University, Matt Ridley worked for the Economist for nine years as science editor, Washington correspondent and American editor, before becoming a self-employed writer and businessman. Five Good Questions: 1. What was the single most important event in the history of humankind and why? 2. Campfire, dung, whale oil, kerosene, “Edison’s” light bulb, CFLs, and LEDs. What are the sweeping innovation lessons we can draw from how humans simply light their homes? 3. Does the use of debt allow us to pull innovation from the future, similar to overclocking a computer? 4. What do past responses to health epidemics teach us about dealing with COVID-19? 5. Has science gotten so complex, specialized, and expensive that accidental, tinkering, gentlemen scientists are no longer feasible? For instance, could I build a thorium reactor in my garage? Is centralized research by governments and big businesses the necessary answer?
Kelvins, watts, CRI, CFLs, LEDs. What does it all mean? In this episode, Devyn gives a history of the light bulb starting with the incandescent and ending up with his beloved LEDs. (It's true!) Memory lane is real, and we go there. Later in the episode, Devyn completely demystifies the overwhelming light bulb aisle for Stacy and anyone else who can't figure out which bulb to buy for their antique fixtures.

He also shares how they manage to be competitive in the lighting market and be one of the top providers of LED. Michael, Greg, and Ellis also talk about the pressing issues right now – from the US-China trade war to consolidations to automation. Ellis has some interesting forecasts and insights about the future of the lighting industry so make sure to listen in.
When I first started growing plants indoors and in hydroponic systems, I had no clue what I was doing. There are a lot of concepts to learn as a beginner to hydroponics, but lighting is by far the most complex. There are so many different types of indoor grow lights, let alone learning about the properties of light itself and how plants use it to grow. I decided to start with the cheapest, most basic types of light out there: compact fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs. They’re a great starting light for beginners because they’re cheap, easy to find, and do a damn good job of growing many different types of plants. Things have progressed a long way since then, and mostly for the better, especially when you consider that the average incandescent light bulb is only about 10% efficient. Most of the energy ends up as heat rather than light. Now we've transitioned through compact fluorescents (CFLs) to light emitting diodes (LEDs), there's a lot more to understand about what makes a good light. In this episode, I speak with David Maunsell from Switch Lighting to uncover the details about why some LEDs are much higher quality than others. Unfortunately it's still the Wild West out there in lighting retail land. Hopefully this can help you figure out what's important for lighting. http://www.switch-lighting.co.nz/http://homestylegreen.com/152

Things have been changing pretty quickly in the light bulb business. In the course of a few short years, Edison's filament bulbs have become illegal, marginally more efficient halogen bulbs have become the default choice in hardware stores, twisty compact fluorescents (CFL) have pretty much had their day in the sun, and specialty LED bulbs are now inexpensive and available in virtually every shape, size and color. When I researched residential lighting a few years ago my conclusion was to go with CFLs because they had the lowest operating costs - but you had to tolerate their slow start up and poor colors. Since then LED bulbs have plummeted in price. Moreover, one can buy LEDs that fit virtually every fixture and claim to work in dimmers. So now it's almost a no-brainer to go with LEDs. Nevertheless, there are still challenges with LED bulbs. Although they all indicate a 22.6 year lifespan, I have had a number of them burn out already. Not all are as dimmable as they claim. Some of the bulbs are too bulky or weirdly shaped to fit in existing features. And the color of the light is sometimes not as warm as conventional bulbs (which are no longer available). Please Listen Up to this Week's Energy Show on Renewable Energy World as we survey the real-world advantages and disadvantages of the current crop of LED bulbs.

This week on the Waves of Tech, we cover plenty of topics to fill your tech cravings. We kick the show off with a story of the final typewriter factory closing and what it meant to the tech industry. The debate continues between the value and utility of Apple's closed app system verses Android's open app system. This is a great topic of discussion. Next, we explore the next steps in energy efficiency as the movement toward LED lighting and CFLs is upon us. Then, it's about security in the next segment. Is there a safe way to surf and what are the odds of infection by visiting sites hosting illegal content? We conclude the show with a discussion of the Apple & Microsoft tracking news of the previous week and the fallout from the Sony PlayStation Network hacking. Join us, as we ride....the waves of tech! Show Notes 1. Last typewriter factory closes Yes, you read the tagline correctly. The last typewriter factory has closed in India this week, selling their final 800 units to a business. Typewriters revolutionized the word processing industry and created a new place in the workforce for women during its introduction. With the evolution of PCs & word processing software, there is no longer a need for typewriters. Feel the nostalgia with this discussion. 2. Open vs Closed App System Apple has a closed app system whereas Android boosts an open app system. A recent app titled "Dog Wars" offers users a chance to build a dynasty of dog fighting. Many animal rights advocates argue that the app should be removed from Android's open market. On the other hand, freedom of speech proponents say let it stand and let the users download what they will. We debate the value and utility of the open verse closed system in place from three different perspectives. 3. Incandescent bulbs on their way out The age of energy efficiency is here and its time for us to start doing our part. In 2007, Congress passed an energy dependency bill that eventually ban the use of energy wasting incandescent bulbs. With new technology in CFLs, LEDs, and halogen lighting, we will soon see our energy costs drop and experience a cleaner environment. We have to say, "It's about time!" Get all the phase-out details here. 4. Sites hosting illegal content: Are you at risk? Security, security, security. Yes, we've heard it all before and we get to hear it again. We are always at risk when browsing the Internet. But are we more at risk when it comes to visiting sites that host illegal content such as pirated movies, music, and software? It's also a good time to remind us to secure our wireless router as a man suspected of child porn was arrested for not doing so. Security should be a main concern for us. Dave says, "Practice Safe Surfing." 5. Phones tracking your location? - WP7 - iPhone People are completely up in arms at the thought of being tracked and having our data collected. News flash folks, it has always happened and it will continue to happen. Many times we authorize Apple or Microsoft to track our locations, our movements, and our browsing history. It's a consensus with the crew that this tracking story was given too much attention and is truly a non-story. 6. Sony Playstation Network hacked The Sony PSN was severely hacked this week and Sony is trying to make it right. Plenty of information from credit cart numbers, home addresses, full names, and more where stolen. Many users of PSN were unaware of the breach until Sony released a statement this week. Rumors of users suing Sony and thoughts that Sony covered up the issue are swirling. Mikee provides some great insight into the issue.
I don’t know about you, but I thought I knew a fair amount about lighting. CFLs, check. LED, check. Odd designer bulbs, check. LEDs are more efficient than everything else, right? Not so, as I learned in the latest GreenSmith...
