Barbershop quartet to perform at St. Mary's On Feb. 15, the acapella quartet Heartfelt, consisting of members of the Westchester Harmony chorus, will perform at St. Mary's Church in Cold Spring. Beacon resident Scott Kruse is substituting to sing baritone, which insiders call the "junk notes" because they sound almost unmusical when performed solo. The tones are "integral to the overall chord, but hearing them alone is rough sledding," says Bill Kruse, Heartfelt's lead singer and Scott's father. Traditional barbershop repertoire consists of popular songs from more than a century ago, like "Sweet Adeline," "Hello! Ma Baby" and "By the Light of the Silvery Moon." Heartfelt will deliver some comedy, lead sing-a-longs and perform numbers appropriate for Valentine's Day. The spelling of "Ma Baby" hints at the genre's roots in minstrelsy, where white performers corked up their faces and caricatured Black people, a portrayal perpetuated by Hollywood through the 1950s. Early barbershoppers appropriated the style from Black singers who secularized four-part gospel harmony. Louis Armstrong sang in a New Orleans quartet and ragtime composer Scott Joplin's 1910 opera Treemonisha includes a barbershop number, "We Will Rest a While." The groups that recorded in the late 1890s and early 1900s, like the Edison and the Haydn quartets, "got to do so because they were white," says Brian Lynch of the Nashville-based Barbershop Harmony Society. "The Black groups couldn't get that kind of exposure." Then came the porkpie hats, red vests, maybe a mustache and always the cornpone humor. The style is characterized by a tenor pitched above the melody (or lead). The bass nails down the low end and the baritone fills in the mid-range notes. Chords are held for emphasis, notes are bent, repeated and inverted to create sounds that can be stirring. In 1938, toward the end of the Great Depression, a group of singers in Tulsa formed the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, known by the awkward acronym SPEBSQUA, which lampooned federal New Deal agencies. After a stint in Wisconsin, the organization moved to Nashville in 2007 and became the Barbershop Harmony Society a year later. "There's a lot of experimentation going on" in the genre, says Lynch, but at competitions, the society enforces rules regarding the number of seventh notes that must be sung. Known as the "blue note," the seventh emphasizes a half-step drop of pitch from the keynote and is the genre's signature sound. The Westchester group dates to 1953. Like many other ensembles, it has performed concerts dedicated to the Beatles, Broadway, the music of the 1960s and composers associated with the Great American Songbook. For a traditional style of music, things are in flux. Known as the Westchester Chordsmen for many years, Westchester Harmony rebranded last year and began accepting women as members following the Barbershop Harmony Society's lead in 2018, Lynch says. Today about 20 percent of the 650 choruses in North America include women (along with seven of Westchester Harmony's 55 singers). Beyond tight harmonies and corny humor, barbershop choruses are known for constant and consistent recruiting. "We're always looking for voices," says Bill Kruse. "The beauty of being among a lot of singers is that you can easily blend in, but if you're in a quartet and someone hits a wrong bass note, it's easy to identify the culprit. The beauty of the larger group is that anyone can sing this style of music, and it's fun." St. Mary's Church is located at 1 Chestnut St. in Cold Spring. The free concert, which is part of the ongoing Music at St. Mary's series, begins at 2 p.m.
Low Fiction brings sonic fury from pits of hell Taking the stage at The Yard in Beacon in October, the metal band Low Fiction flipped the switch from a dirge-like breakdown to a deafening rumble that unleashed a sonic fury conjured from the pits of hell. The spectators, 60 strong, bobbed heads, convulsed bodies and roared their approval during the quartet's 10-song set. They demanded and received an encore. Despite declarations about its alleged death, guitar-driven rock 'n' roll remains a conduit for rebellious youth and older folks who cling to the music of their teen years. "Metal mixes well with other edgy styles," says lyricist, guitarist and lead vocalist Jack Kolodziejski, who lives in Newburgh but retains close ties to Beacon, where his 30-something bandmates are residents. "We take all our influences - punk, hardcore, metal, alt-rock, stoner rock, shoegaze - throw it into a blender and see what comes up." Low Fiction will perform on Friday (Jan. 17) at Denning's Point Distillery in Beacon with King in Yellow. The group, whose name is intended to be a lowbrow antithesis to the term high art, shares a rehearsal space with several other plugged-in hard rockers at the KuBe Art Center. On Bandcamp, they identify as "heavy metal," by now a generic term with a massive tent, although the genre's more commercial acts are often associated with some melody, fast guitar solos, flowing locks of hair and at least semifrequent chord changes in a quasi-pop song format. By contrast, Low Fiction's tunes flow like the lazy Hudson in a hypnotic, rhythmically repetitive but deliberate manner. The songs create an ambient ensemble sound before subtly shifting in mood and intensity. "We're like the Grateful Dead of metal," says Kolodziejski. "We prefer to keep it pretty laid back." Neither he nor Beacon-born guitarist Noah Mandia "shred," slang for running up and down the neck playing lightning-quick licks. At The Yard, they played maybe three subdued solos in their set. The collaborative, riff-based compositions drench the guitar sounds with feedback, overdrive and distortion. Even Brian Caprari's bass blasts with an effects-pedal-driven sonic boom. The lulls provide space for drummer to pummel the skins and cymbals with menace, especially during the song "Dark Ride." "At first, I learned to play the right way, with reading and finesse, but I use none of that technique here," says Scelzo. "The goal is maximum volume and effect." The most toe-tapping song, "Break Your Brain," ended with a breakdown, where bands slow the song's dynamics, then ratchet the tempo and intensity back up or shift into a fast-chord sequence. In this case, the band's sludgy pulse faded to near stasis. Band members jammed around town with other musicians until the quartet congealed in 2022. They released their first albums, Dungeon Demo and Midnight Demon in 2023, and an EP, Vestige, last year. Despite working white-collar day jobs, they celebrate the dark side. Songs unfold like horror flicks, and their artwork features eerie imagery. "That's the stuff we often talk about, slasher movies and other gory things," says Scelzo. "Murder and deceit are primal, and it all goes back thousands of years, but we channel it with loud, pounding rock 'n' roll." Denning's Point Distillery is located at 10 N. Chestnut St. in Beacon. The show begins at 7 p.m. and a $10 donation is suggested. Follow the band at instagram.com/lowfictionhv and download music at lowfictionhv.bandcamp.com.

St. Mary's Church hosts music for all folds Music fills the cavernous sanctuary throughout the year at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Cold Spring - and it's not always what one might expect. In addition to Prince Nyatanga playing Sunday morning sacred songs on the organ, jazz pianist Daniel Kelly has a gig at 7 p.m. tonight (Sept. 6), the Doansburg Chamber Ensemble and the Taghkanick Chorale perform regularly and the Hudson Highlands Pipe Band practices in the Parish Hall. Last year, a group created an independent nonprofit, Music at St. Mary's, to present an eclectic mix of free concerts in the nave. Part of its mission is to pay the musicians a fair wage with funding provided by donations and grants. Another goal is to entice people into the space. "We hear it all the time: 'I've lived here my entire life and have never been inside,'" says Bruce Croushore, who chairs the new entity. "The sound is spectacular." The Musical Heart of St. Mary's The digital organ at St. Mary's Episcopal Church resembles the traditional instruments profiled in the Aug. 30 issue of The Current, with two important exceptions: the computer inside and the sound emanating from speakers in the rafters. After a fire destroyed the church's organ in 1961 and its successor fell into disrepair, John Drew came to the rescue in the mid-1990s, installing a $250,000 electronic organ and designing its circuits and sound. Drew left in 2000 and about 15 years later, the circuitry blew. Tim Lusk, known around the church as Mr. Fixit, kept it going with an 18-month overhaul. The manufacturer, Copeman Hart in the U.K., had been purchased in 2011 by a Dutch firm, Global Organ Group, which showed little interest in providing service, recalls Rob Lusk, who helped his father rebuild the organ in 2016. Rob Lusk, who took over maintenance after his father died in 2019, says the pipe organ probably needed $600,000 in repairs. He estimates the Lusk family's overhaul cost $75,000. Beyond a computer, the guts include an old transformer and electrolytic capacitors, which "serve as the power supply for the stop-control solenoids," Lusk explains. Wires sprout everywhere. The digital wizardry can mimic the sound of any pipe organ and a pedal swells the volume. A portrait of Bach sits by the organist's left hand. "Music is the heart and soul of St. Mary's, and Tim brought it back," says his widow, Barbara Lusk. "But without John Drew's generous gift, the church could have become a hollow shell." After Kelly, Music at St. Mary's will host monthly shows on Saturday afternoons: It has booked the Oxalis Trio (Sept. 21, with Carl Gutowski on flute, Zachary Pulse on oboe and Alexandra Beliakovich on piano), the Elm Chamber Ensemble (Oct. 19), the West Point Glee Club (Nov. 16) and jazz pianist Art Labriola plus the trio Mother Lode (Dec. 14). Each performance begins at 2 p.m. "This is what churches do all over Europe, turn themselves into concert venues for all kinds of music," says Croushore. Past performers have included the Garrison School's Jazz-Rock Ensemble, Peekskill saxophonist Joe Natale and the New Muse 4tet, featuring violinist Gwen Laster, who lives in Beacon. Kelly, who lives in Cold Spring, will play with the band he's taking to the Jazz at the Lake festival in Lake George later this month. The group performs with a piano, bass and drums, plus guitar and spoken word. "I'm learning that the Hudson Valley is filled with many talented musicians," says Croushore. "They're quite happy to live in a beautiful space a short ride from Manhattan and perform near their homes, even if the pay isn't at New York scale." St. Mary's is located at 1 Chestnut St. in Cold Spring. For more information, see musicatstmarys.com.

I assumed they were one-offs from local DJs looking to make a buck, that my DJ partner & I found at one of the many stores that catered to this stuff on Chestnut St. in Philly. NOPE. Well, yes, but NOPE. These albums got way more circulation than I ever knew. They were both hatched in … anti drum roll cuz this is no surprise … NYC, by mixing teams looking to make a buck and get some kind of notoriety. I would bet thousands of DJs own(ed) these. And I'd bet they're two of hundreds or thousands of albums of this kind. They were great for DJs looking to learn how it's done, get ideas for their own mixes, and especially to fill in gaps in DJing sets with mixing done by the pros. “Bits & PCs 86” was by The Dynamite Mixers. They are Carlos Berrios & Norberto Cotto, and not only did they release “Bits & PCs” from 1985-1998, they are still out there working, though it looks like separately. “Mega – Mix 86” was harder to track down. Some wonderful person put it on YouTube (which I coupled with “Bits & PCs 86” in my playlist above), and listed some song credits, but there's no artist/DJ credit. So I did some further searching, and I'm pretty sure it was done by Deejay B@m B@m (not to be confused with the much younger DJ Bam Bam), apparently originally from Mexico. It might be a miscredit, but it's the closet I could come to figuring this out. Cool that all of these mixers are Latino. I listened to these – for the first time since probably 1986, and they reminded me of stuff I'd hear on Philly's Power 99 FM: whole sets from featured DJs mixing and cutting and scratching. And it reminded me of my own DJing. I never got this good. Not with vinyl anyway. I went through a cassette mixing phase, where I'd record using three cassette players: two to play songs so they could overlap or I could punch in phrases/licks/beats over another track, and one to capture it all. I still have one or two of those efforts, and will def transfer them soon. Me. DJ history. Dance beats. My music. You've heard it before. This is about as barebones seminal as it gets. The perfect example of this is … another anti drum roll … a mix I made of my funky tune output from 1986-2020: NICK & REC - “Funky Time Machine Mashup” Have you ever done any mixing or DJing, or even made a mixtape or compilation? Do you have any obscure vinyl you'd love to track down? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes.
