On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two old friends who've contributed more than their fair share to the emo world and beyond and lived to tell the tale: Evan Weiss and Chris Carrabba. Carrabba is of course the main creative force behind Dashboard Confessional, whose early albums—specifically The Swiss Army Romance and The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most—basically invented the genre's confessional acoustic-based era. He could've made those records a dozen times over the past 20 years, but instead Carrabba filled out Dashboard's sound over the years, stretching out where the muse took him. Now an elder statesman, Carrabba returned to that simpler sound but brought years of wisdom with him for 2022's All the Truth That I Can Tell, which he talks about in this great chat. Dashboard will head out on a long summer tour with Goo Goo Dolls starting July 13, but not before playing a show with Weiss's band in Vegas the day before. Weiss's band would be Pet Symmetry, a trio he's been part of for the past decade or so, and which just released an excellent new album: Big Symmetry is a big, loveable, tuneful set of songs that all start with the word “big.” It's a joyful blast of pop-punk that feels like a deliberate antidote to tough times. It may also be a bit of a reaction to what fans would consider Weiss's main band, Into It. Over It., which flies that emo flag a bit higher. But whatever, those tags are pretty silly when we ought to be talking about songs. Speaking of, check out the song “Big Wish” from the album Big Symmetry right here. In this wide-ranging chat, Carrabba and Weiss talk about the holiness of punk community, the accidental origins of Dashboard Confessional plus that band's long hiatus and rebirth, and how the financial collapse of 2008 had opposite effects on their careers. It's true! Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Chris Carrabba and Evan Weiss for chatting. The top of the 9 by 13-inch print starts boldly with the state name NEBRASKA and underneath it is spelled also in braille. Underneath the word NEBRASKA is the entire state outline of Nebraska exactly like a map. The only difference from a map is on the left side of the state there's a white cane instead of a straight line and on the northwestern border there is another white cane instead of a line. At the end of the strap of the white cane, the map continues along the river as it naturally would. The river continues all the way down to the southeast border of the state. In the middle of the west side of the state are the historic rolling sand hills, which are covered by prairie grasses. These sand hills are replicated by small wavy tactile hills as a nod to this critical and historic portion of the state, which supports the cattle industry. Starting in the middle to the right side of the print are three huge stalks of corn. There's a reason this is proudly called the Cornhusker state! 192 Berkey Creamery Bundle Package donated by Pennsylvania Council of The Blind One thing that most Pennsylvanians agree on is “Ice cream is good, and the Penn State Creamery makes some of the best.” We love ice cream, but we love the science behind it even more. I was born in Cuba in 1963, my family migrated to Spain escaping communism in 1974, and we eventually moved to the US in 1977 where we settled in Houston and have considered Texas our home ever since. I attended the University of Houston where God introduced me to my wife Maria 33 years ago and gave us three boys to raise, and a daughter through adoption later in life. I can't remember a family event that didn't involve food, or start with prayer. It was always amazing how my mother was buried in the kitchen the entire time we had guests and managed to feed huge groups with some incredible dishes. I picked up on that knack for cooking and entertaining family and friends, and these days we love sitting around the table eating, sharing, and laughing. I personally enjoy after dinner the most, where conversations over dessert and coffee can take you in very unexpected directions. I started in the restaurant business back in 1979, while I was in High School, as a dishwasher at a Marriott cafeteria inside a Texas Instruments. After that, I got a job as a waiter at the first Pappasito's in Houston at the corner of Richmond and Hillcroft. From the Pappa's family I got the bug for the business, and I never looked back. I was fortunate to also learn from some of the best restauranteurs in Houston, working for Mama's Café, Carrabba's, and The Palm. In 2006 I created my own restaurant concept called Eden Café. The menu reflects where I've been in my career, so it showcases what I know…Tex-Mex, Italian, seafood, steaks, Southwest, and American comfort food. Over the years, I have been fortunate to add some very talented staff to my kitchen team, so the menu has evolved with their ideas and creativity. We are also fortunate to be in an area that continues to grow, as we meet new customers everyday who have recently moved to the area. While I carry hospitality in my veins and love what I do, I also have another passion for telling stories and the art of performance. Early 2 / 2 on during my college years, I participated in several live stage productions, some with lead roles, and found out how much I enjoyed that. After a break of a few years focusing on my restaurant career, I went back to pursue more acting work, and ended up switching to film. But I realized what I really wanted to do was used my gifts to glorify God and help people heal from trauma and pain, as well as point them in God's direction, so I've been blessed to work in faith-based films and TV series that do just that. I see both careers as forms of serving, whether I'm cooking or acting, but I also know God is not finished with me yet

Becky Boyd has worked at Outback Steakhouse most of her adult life, starting as a server and moving up to bar manager and eventually to her current position as Director of Menu Innovation & Strategy for all of Bloomin' Brands. Bloomin' is the parent company of Outback, Bonefish Grill and Carrabba's Italian Grill. Outback is currently on an innovation tear, launching seasonal limited-time menus at a steady pace. The most recent promotions focused on Fall's Swicy menu flavored with the sweet heat of hot honey and “Steakmas Season” for the holidays. Boyd and her team pay equal attention to the food and drink sides of the menu during R&D sessions, with cocktails such as the Winter White Cosmo and Hot Honey Margarita becoming instant signatures. But for the Steakmas promotion, the menu riffs on two core items: ribeye steak and the Bloomin' onion. Listen as Boyd shares her culinary journey, talks about how Outback's Australian connection differentiates the menu and reveals what might be coming next on the menu.

Johnny Carrabba's legendary restaurant, Carrabba's Italian Grill is turning 37 years old and is receiving the gift of reinvestment from its owner and creator. Redesigned private dining rooms, enhanced ambiance, and updated background music are just a few of the ways Johnny is refreshing the interior of his landmark original Carrabba's on Kirby in Houston, Texas. "I have been blessed with a very strong customer base and an incredibly loyal staff," says Johnny. "Half of my staff have been with me for over 15 years and we are serving the children and grandchildren of many of our original guests."   Johnny first visited Corner Booth as a guest in December 2019. During that episode, we learned about his strong commitment to guest service and how his staff has become extended family. In this episode, we learn how his concepts have adapted to the guests' buying habits post-pandemic. Says Johnny, "People demand more convenience now, we are experiencing 23% to 30% of our revenue coming from car side pickup."   With nine units, including full-service Carrabba's Italian Grill and Grace's and fast-casual Mia's concepts, Johnny is an expert on multiple-unit management. "Owners can do what they want, but the customer is the real boss," says Johnny, adding, "the closer you stay to your customers the smarter you remain." He spends his time working with management and engaging with staff members.    In this episode, Johnny shares insights into the use of technology to support operations while enhancing the guest experience through "hands-on" hospitality. "You always return to where you feel you belong. More than food and drink, it's the service that makes a great experience."

What can Bloomin' Brands expect from disgruntled shareholder Starboard Value?

Every now and then, a public restaurant company finds itself in the crosshairs of an activist investor who's convinced it can do a better job of running the business. But few of those attempts to wrest control of an operation come close to Starboard Capital's successful attempt nine years ago to boot the whole board of Darden Restaurants and sharply change the casual-dining giant's direction. And now Starboard has another casual-dining behemoth in its sights. The investment firm has filed notice that it intends to lean on Bloomin' Brands, the parent of Outback Steakhouse and Carrabba's, to force some changes.   What can the Bloomin' team expect from what's now appears to be its largest shareholder? The current episode of Restaurant Rewind attempts to answer that question by looking back at the 2014 interactions between Starboard and Darden.  At the heart of that give-and-take was what may be the most exhaustive list of alleged ills an investor has ever gathered on a holding, a 294-page slide deck and whitepaper on what Darden had supposedly done wrong and how it could right itself.

On today's program, the Florida Baptist State Convention has been defrauded of more than $700-thousand. We'll explain how the fraud worked, and how you can keep your church or ministry from becoming a victim. Former Hillsong pastor Carl Lentz is back in the news, and is soon coming to a television near you. And we look at a group of Christian ministries in Nebraska who are withdrawing from the local community foundation over the foundation's requirements to affirm LGBTQ rights. We begin today with a pair of stories related to Rick Warren and California's influential Saddleback Church. Final Thoughts: I want all of my friends in Orlando to know that I'll be there on Monday for the annual meeting of the National Religious Broadcasters, and I'll be holding a lunch for readers and donors on May 22 at Carrabba's Italian Grille near the Orlando airport.  If you live in the Orlando area, you should have received an invitation already.  And we already have about a dozen people signed up for this event.  It's absolutely free, but you do need to sign up to attend. I'll be doing similar lunches in Colorado Springs, Albuquerque, and Los Angeles, in June, in part to celebrate the 25th anniversary of MinistryWatch. So many of our listeners and BWL community members are leaders across the domains of their life–work, family, community, and so on.  They spend so much time investing in the development of others, supporting the growth of others, and serving the needs of others.  Yet, sometimes they struggle to give this same level of care and priority to themselves.  If this resonates, this episode is for you! Our special guest, Tanisha Chea, President of Sir Grout Franchising and Mrs.North America 2022,   shares her “spirit of YES” approach and gives listeners a peek behind the scenes of her own YES journey as a corporate leader, pageant winner, community leader, wife, and mom.  In this episode, we want to highlight the need for you to also prioritize and say YES to yourself.  YES to your interests. YES to your dreams. YES to your desires. YES to your care. In this dynamic conversation, we explore many of the reasons that we struggle to YES to ourselves, including dealing with fear, guilt, and being disconnected to our own voice and desires. Tanisha vulnerably shares how she navigated these very obstacles to pursue her dreams.  Additionally, she shares her approach to activating her support system on the journey. Tanisha's story encourages us to “try on” new versions of ourselves, push past fear, and take the leap to try something new and say YES to ourselves. Tune in, and catch this inspiration to say YES to you!   Guest Bio  Tanisha was named President of Sir Grout Franchising in December 2021. Prior to leading Sir Grout, Tanisha was the Vice President of Global Innovation of Krispy Kreme. In 2000, Chris Carrabba of Further Seems Forever would release his first solo album Swiss Army Romance under the name Dashboard Confessional. He would soon leave Further Seems Forever to focus solely on Dashboard Confessional, citing that his desire to do the hard work it would take to be a successful musician was greater than that of his bandmates. Dashboard Confessional have gone on to release multiple gold records and despite a hiatus between 2011-2015 the band endures to this day, partly owing to Carrabba's legacy as an emo legend but more so because of hard work, a passion for fans and people, and authentic songwriting. In this episode: FAQ is: Karen asks, At what age can I join AARP?   Today's Special Edition is on AARP Travel Today's Mistake- Being frazzled in the airport Travel Advice:  Room service is overrated.   FAQ:  Karen asks: Is there an age requirement for AARP?   Answer: What is AARP's Membership Age? While AARP is dedicated to people over 50, there is no minimum age to join. People of all ages can get an AARP membership for as low as $12 per year with auto-renewal. Anyone can become an AARP member and gain access to hundreds of discounts, programs and resources. My brother joined when he was 40. You can join at any age. They have a promo now if you purchase 5 years of membership. That sounds like a good offer if you plan on being a traveler soon.     Today's Special Edition is on AARP Travel I've been an AARP member, which stands for American Association of Retired Persons. I'm on their mailing lists and get a lot of travel information from them. Some years I join and others I don't. They make travel a worry-free experience with partners who are tested.    I recently got a magazine from one of their vendors, Grand European Travel, or GET tours. This vendor has tours in every continent with discounts if you book early for summer travel. I like to look at these brochures and dream about travel, and the places that I will go. Good photography is their high standard. They also claim to be eco-friendly. Each of these tours is with a trained guide.   https://www.aarp.org/travel/   AARP doesn't protect Social Security and Medicare. It prevents any serious discussion of meaningfully reforming these programs, which are in great danger of becoming insolvent. AARP, with its nearly 38 million members, is one of the most powerful lobbying organizations in Washington. AARP members can receive discounts at Walgreens, RiteAid, Kohl's, Goodwill, UPS, and TJ Maxx..The AARP is a massive organization that boasts around 38 million members in the United States. Because of its stature, AARP has the ability to partner with big companies and give their members all of their discounts, benefits, resources, advice, and other things. You can get discounts for restaurants like McCormick & Schmick's, Claim Jumper, Outback Steakhouse, Denny's, Bonefish Grill, Carrabba's Italian Grill and many more. You can also get discounts on entertainment options like Regal movie tickets, Ticketmaster, and Ancestry. There are financial benefits that come with investing in an AARP membership that can be effective in helping you deal with your money and retirement. Some of the benefits you can receive from having an AARP membership include money management links and worksheet and Social Security benefits calculator. This calculator helps individuals to determine when they can expect to start receiving Social Security benefits. The AARP also provides identity theft protection services, which is very important. Today's Mistake-Being frazzled in the airport I was hot, tired and hungry in an airport recently. I wanted to purchase a water bottle. It was $5 bucks. I can't drink water in Mexico unless it's been treated or I will get sick. I was thinking about that as I packed up my wallet to leave. But I almost left the water behind on the counter. That's careless behavior. The cashier called after me, “you forgot your water.” Of course I thanked her. That was kind.   Today's Travel Advice- Room service is overrated.  Instead of ordering room service, many hotels let you order food from around town. Hyatt has a pilot program for snack delivery with GoPuff app to deliver prepackaged and hot mails to rooms in certain of their properties. So far it's going well, they say. See the show notes for the link. Thousands of items delivered fast for as little as $3 fee. Think about ice cream, cookies or yogurt delivery. https://gopuff.com/go Today I want to bring meaning to your travel. Send me your travel tip. On today's episode, I do a deep dive on Dashboard Confessional's second official full-length album "The Place You Have Come to Fear the Most". The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most is the second studio album recorded by the American emo band Dashboard Confessional, released on March 20, 2001, through Vagrant Records. Dashboard Confessional started as an acoustic side project for vocalist/guitarist Chris Carrabba while he was fronting Further Seems Forever. The project's first album The Swiss Army Romance was released in early 2000 through local independent label Fiddler Records. Using his connections within the punk scene, Carrabba was able to perform on a few tours. Though the audience wasn't used to acoustic instrumentation, Carrabba won the crowds over. Eventually demand for the album was exceeding the label's supply, which resulted in owner Amy Fleisher licensing the record to Drive-Thru Records. In October, Carrabba announced his departure from Further Seems Forever. LET'S CONNECT: Kyle's Instagram Kyle's Facebook Email: Kyledevlinfitness@gmail.com
