The Biden Administration has no solution to control the influx of migrants through the Mexico border. Meanwhile, baby formula is available for migrants crossing the border as there are shortages across the US. Biden's FDA shutdown an Abbott formula manufacturing plant, putting American's last with no plan to bring in replacement supplies. US troops are being sent to Somolia, with defense officials promising not to engage in fighting. Cammack decries the use of forces in places with no critical threat to the US. The EPA is holding up approving a Citrus Greening solution, claiming a lack of funds to review the latest proposed and promising treatment. Saving Florida's citrus industry is a high priority for all of the state's bipartisan representatives in Congress, and Kammack is one of Florida's leading agriculture proponents. Eastern Tropical Pacific reefs demonstrate resiliency to warming temperatures. A 44-year long study showcases no change in coral reef abundance between Baja California and the Galapagos Islands. The reason why? These corals grow quickly and are symbiotic with heat tolerant algae. The findings on these Eastern Pacific reefs may help inform the future for coral reef survival in other parts of the world. A huge breakthrough in the fight against “Citrus Greening,” a disease that is wiping out citrus trees all around the world, has just occurred. California researchers have identified a gene in an exotic Australian citrus fruit, called a fingerlime, that produces a peptide that acts like a natural antibiotic in the tree that makes it resistant to citrus greening. This natural antibiotic is now being synthesized in the lab to be sprayed on the citrus trees to help stop the negative impacts of this devastating disease. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02257-w?utm_source=Nature+Briefing&utm_campaign=2a2293db4f-briefing-dy-20200730&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c9dfd39373-2a2293db4f-44498949 https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/07/200723143637.htm https://www.npr.org/2020/07/27/895775625/exotic-australian-fruit-may-help-save-floridas-citrus-industry

Graciela Lorca studies genetic systems to find positive and negative microbial interactions that lead to disease. She talks about her discovery of chemical inhibitors for the citrus greening disease bacterium, Liberibacter asiaticus, and how a specific strain of Lactobacillus johnsoniimodulates the immune system and may help prevent development of diabetes in people. Subscribe (free) on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Android, RSS, or by email. Also available on the ASM Podcast Network app. Julie’s Biggest Takeaways Citrus greening disease, or huanglongbing, is a disease of citrus trees causing a major epidemic among citrus farmers around the world. The disease causes trees to sicken and eventually die, and is best diagnosed by PCR amplification of the bacterial DNA from the bacterium that causes the disease, Liberibacter asiaticus. Because the disease spreads through the tree at different rates, it’s important that many samples be tested for accurate diagnosis. Quarantining the disease has proved difficult, as undiagnosed roots can transmit the disease if they are used to hybridize with canopy plants. The disease becomes even harder to contain under bad weather conditions: the high winds of recent hurricanes can scatter the insect vector, the Asian citrus psyllid, leading to infection of new orchards. Although L. asiaticuscan’t be cultured, Graciela performed a screen on L. asiaticustranscription factors that were produced by E. coli. These were tested for inhibition by a chemical library, and discovered that a common treatment for gout, benzbromarone, inhibited protein activity. This discovery was confirmed using in vivoinfected plants and by expressing the gene in related bacterial species, Graciela and her team predict the protein plays a role in responding to osmotic stress. The protein target of the chemical differs widely between citrus greening disease and gout, but the protein-chemical interaction is similar enough to allow protein inhibition. Is there a link between the microbiome and diabetes? 10 years ago, Lactobacillus johnsoniican rescue animals that are predisposed to diabetes. L. johnsoniiinactivates a host enzyme, IDO, which regulates proinflammatory responses. Activated immune cells can travel to the pancreas and attack beta cells, leading to diabetes. Regulating the proinflammatory response by administering L. johnsoniias probiotics offers the opportunity to control development of diabetes in predisposed people.   Links for This Episode MTM Listener Survey, only takes 3 minutes. Unfortunately, during this our #ForestHealth month, we’ve highlighted one challenge to our citrus industry in “Cankers Are Key” and this week we will focus on another challenge to our citrus trees. Citrus greening has been confirmed in several locations across the gulf coast, coastal bend and south Texas. Species Spotlight The Texas Persimmon Diospyros texana is also known as Chapote or Mexican Persimmon and is a semi-evergreen Texas native. Usually found on Rocky and dry sites in Central and South Texas, west to Brewster county, the Texas Persimmon requires well-drained soils.
