The Anglo Celtic Plate eh, you've heard us talk about it tons. It's now nearly upon us and we think it's about time to speak to two of our pals who'll be heavily involved on race day as well as both pre and post race! First, John, freshly off the Jet 2 flight from the Canaries joins Steven to catch-up. With his sun-drenched enhanced warm glow John finds out from Steven how his foray back into racing at the Inverness Half Marathon panned out. Was there PB's to celebrate? How many selfie's did he get asked for? What was the shwank to non-shwank ratio? All the important questions ye might say. Then it's over to Steven to get the lowdown from ACP race organiser Adrian Stott and Team Scotland Manager Debbie Martin-Consani. We delve into a bit of the history of the event first held in 1995 taking a trip down memory lane at some race highlights. Adrian treats us to his top 3 moments in the previous 26 editions of the ACP as well as recalling the late great Don Ritchie's ways of coping with a bad patch during his record breaking efforts at the distance. Debbie recalls her own appearance in the race and reminds us just how tough running 100k on the road is. Brutal is overused, but you guessed it, it's brutal. Relentless type 1 fun! Debbie then gives us some insight into the Scotland team for the 100k as well as focussing on some of the top talent making it's way to Perth on Sunday 3 April from the England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland teams. Adrian and Debbie also let us into their top tips in the 100k open race as it's revealed that the field is every bit as stacked as it could be. With the 50k and 100k open races also on the agenda we're left with a rallying call to get to the North Inch in Perth with your cowbells in tow and make some noise for the athletes taking on the 1.5 mile loop. We're up to high-doh and we think you should be too! It's not too late to sign up! It's March, time for another treat, let's go Episode 13, Season 2!! And it's a huge huge welcome back to the pod to Debbie Martin-Consani. Ultra runner Debbie first appeared on YHRF in Episode 4 of Season 2. She was busy prepping for The Spine Race (it got postponed) whilst juggling the social media rigours of the wonderful Marcothon. We catch up with Debbie this time around about all the stuff we failed to cover last time round, and that's heaps! With her wealth of knowledge and experience in the world of running how could we resist from picking her brains once again? We talk running tours of the Glasgow Mural Trail in the city she loves, joining Dan Lawson during his iconic LEJOG attempt, Team GB 24 Hour racing, her favourite races....ever, coping with 100 mile race curveballs, Anglo-Celtic Plate managerial duties, virtual racing (and rainbow buffs), competing in the gruelling Tour De Geants, Steven & Debbie find they share a trainer addiction and we even slip in an(other) blether about the Kinlochleven Chip Shop. We find time to touch on a more serious topic too, that of female solo running and how Debbie feels about it along with some of her tactics to ensure she's keeps safe out on the streets, trails and hills. Steven challenges Debbie to run to the moon, does she accept though? Remember hang on until the end as we coax out Debbie's favourite local dialect word and assess if it's a worthy entry into the YHRF dialect dictionary! It's another fun filled chat full of laughs & precious tips, hints and inspiration from a lady who leaves an indelible mark on everyone she meets with her enthuisiam and commitment to achieving great things. Other members included Wardell Piper, Joyce Jones, Ursula Herring, and Debbie Martin. Though they never had a major Top 40 hit, they did generate two big Soul hits "Armed and Extremely Dangerous" (#11) and "The Player" (#7). Salsoul Records who had acquired their back catalog released "Let No Man Put Asunder" from their 1977 album Delusions, which was highly regarded and considered their best. That song was later sampled by Mary J. Blige sparking renewed interest in the group who had a massive influence on 90's House Music from renowned DJs Todd Terry, Danny Tenaglia, and David Morales. Soon the majority of their hits were remixed by other well-known DJs including the more recent faithful renderings by Dr. Packer (a personal Party Favorz favorite). After listening to this set multiple times, it became clear to me that these songs are better suited for House Music and now Funky House no matter how simple some of them may be. There's no denying the infectiousness of tracks like "Doctor Love," "Love Thang," and "Ain't He Bad." The songs included in this tribute set are timeless classics no matter how they were received at the time of their release. After all, good music is simply just that and these ladies deserve all the accolades they've received. Season 2 keeps rolling, the guests keep showing. You're in for a festive treat as we welcome to the podcast ultra 'ultra marathon runner' Debbie Martin-Consani. Now, we could've spoken to Debbie for hours on end, her passion, insight and humour for running seem absolutely boundless. So, instead of having an epic 5 hour long podcast we focussed on two things, the Montane Spine Race and Marcothon. Two topics Debbie is more than qualified to chat about!! Debbie's only race of 2020, yes she raced in 2020, was the small matter of 268 miles long. The Montane Spine Race starts in Edale in Derbyshire and finishes in Kirk Yetholm in the bonnie Scottish Borders following the Penine Way National Trail. It's run in deepest darkest January, so daylight is at a premium and the 2020 edition had a guest appearance from Storm Brendan. Listen to the tale of Debbie's race, it's truly inspirational. The second part of the show focuses on Marcothon!! The much-loved challenge of running either 3 miles or 25 minutes (whichever comes first) every day for the month of December. Debbie is the founder of this amazing movement. Hear from the source about how Marcothon came about, how it grew (and grew and grew) and how it pretty much fills a month of Debbie's time every year! Whilst simultaneously she trains for the Spine Race 2021, oh yes, Debbie is going back for more Spine tingling fun!! Grab a brew, go for a run, head out for a walk, whatever way you listen enjoy! Debbie is an inspirational ultra-runner, Mum and fulltime marketing professional. Debbie became a part of the Montane athlete team in 2011 and has represented Scotland and Great Britain in 100K and 24-hour races. In 2014 Debbie Won the 2014 Montane Lakeland 100 and in 2015 placed 2nd in the shorter, and perhaps harder, Lakeland 50. Her 10-year journey with over 40 ultra-races includes classics such as the West Highland Way Race, GUCR, Transgrancanaria and Spartathlon. Following these successes, she finished the Montane Tour Des Géants in 2017, saying; “I doubt I will do many things in life that could possibly compare to TDG. I unearthed layers of myself I didn't know I had. There were moments I felt I was just torturing myself, but I never wanted to stop. The drive to finish overpowered everything” A massive leap into the unknown, she finished in 127 hours; an outstanding achievement considering the TDG is classed as one of the 5 “hardest runs” in the world. Containing 24,000m / 78,700ft of ascent (the equivalent of climbing Everest nearly three times) within its 205 miles / 330km, competitors need to be at the peak of their physical ability and mentally agile enough to cope with up to seven days of unpredictable and changeable mountain weather across an entire region of the Italian Alps. Add to this sleep deprivation, altitude acclimatisation and a cut-off time of only 150 hours. Little wonder only 50% of competitors complete the race. Debbie’s previous performance – and goals – are indicative of an athlete with the highest levels of physical and mental strength and will inspire you to get out in the mountains.
