Don Tran is a former special operations Marine, and is the co-founder of Deep End Fitness. Prior to joining the MARSOC, or Marine Special Operations Command, community, Don was a water survival instructor, where he first began learning the skills that he developed over his career and brought to Deep End Fitness. Don was also a JTAC - a Joint Tactical Attack Controller, which is a specialty within US SOCOM that involves the coordination of combat aircraft in close support of ground operations. He finished his time as a Marine Raider in a leadership role as a team operations chief and spent additional time at 4th Force Reconnaissance Company before leaving active duty in 2018. From there, he shifted full time into his work at Deep End Fitness, where he and his team teach physical fitness and water confidence, integrating the training methods he learned and developed as a maritime special operator. At BTE, we're big fans of the work that Don and his crew are doing at Deep End Fitness, and we encourage our clients to train at their facilities for in-person coaching on the critical skills in the water that they'll need to excel in their selection courses. The concepts that they're teaching have been at the heart of maritime special operations culture for a long time, and it's great to see those benefits becoming more mainstream and reaching not just other competitive athletes, but people from all walks of life seeking to become more fit while learning to better understand and manage their bodies and stress responses. Prime Hall served in the Marines from 2005 to 2017, with his initial deployment being in the infantry for the first four years. He later transitioned to becoming a water survival instructor, where he drew on principles of military water survival for the basis of his programming. Hall relays the story of an individual who survived for 20 hours in the Gulf of Mexico after falling off a Carnival cruise ship, which exemplifies the incredible efficacy of military water survival. Prime also discusses his work with his company Deep End Fitness, a program that certifies instructors in this survival methodology and provides branded programming for health clubs, YMCA's, JCC's, and so on. Additionally, he dives (get it?) ;) into the Underwater Torpedo League (UTL), a unique sport he created while in the military to help his squad gain confidence which has garnered substantial attention and a growing community of players. Hall states, "The biggest draw we see are individuals that have a fitness enthusiast, or water enthusiast background with a business acumen . . . that's kind of where we see the highest performing programs across the country . . . and when it comes to the UTL, it's created a huge value proposition for the licensees because now some of them compete on one of 12 teams we've founded!" Key themes discussed 1. Water Survival: Military principles, SAFE methodology. 2. Deep End Fitness: Licensing program, 30 location currently, aiming for 100 by the end of 2024. 3. Training and Instruction: Virtual programming, personalized training, in-person mentors. 4. Underwater Torpedo League (UTL): "Full-contact" under water sport, co-ed teams, a force multiplier. 5. CrossFit Affiliation: Hybrid licensing, value proposition, building community. 6. Franchise Growth: Master licensees, international expansion, ongoing capital raise. 7. Life Lessons and Mottoes: "Make it happen", "When in doubt, focus out", breath control. A few key takeaways: 1. Prime is known for his expertise in water survival training derived from his military experience. He explains how his training process, based on principles of military water survival, helps individuals gain confidence in the water, even if they don't know how to swim. 2. He discusses the Deep End Fitness program and its innovative approach to fitness. The program is being licensed to individuals and health clubs across the US as a performance program that complements other physical activities. 3. The UTL is an underwater sport that involves full-contact gameplay at the bottom of a pool using torpedoes. The league serves as an exciting force multiplier that adds value to licensees and creates a community around the Deep End Fitness program. 4. Finally, Prime shares some insightful military and performance philosophies, such as "When in doubt, focus out" to navigate stressful situations and the importance of breath for cognitive control. These philosophies offer practical guidance that can be applied not only in water-based activities but also in everyday life. Click here to download transcript. This week in the studio my guest started out life with a sometimes troubled childhood, but quickly got a glimpse at the future of service when his grandparents enrolled him in a military academy. While attending the academy my guest realized that work without purpose was meaningless. Joining the Marines in 2005 he once again got off to a bumpy start, until he again discovered that he was not performing at his full potential and got to work becoming the best possible version of himself by being selected into the famed MARSOC Raiders. He has combat deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan where he suffered not only physically but also found that the scars of war follow you well past your time in service. My guest is an Entrepreneur, CEO, Master Trainer, and Author. He not only received his Masters Degree, but was also awarded Top 100 MBA's in the Country. On top of all that he is the Founder and CEO of the Underwater Torpedo League, Deep End Fitness, and Co Founder of the Marine Raider Challenge. It is with great respect and honor that I introduce you to Prime Hall….
In this episode, Dr. Matt sits down with Don Tran who spent 12 years serving in special operations in the marines as a marine raider. Today we welcome Don Tran and Prime Hall onto the podcast. Don and Prime are former Marine Raiders from within the special operations community and underwater survival instructors. Together they have leveraged their years of training and learning and brought what they found to be an essential method of training that was missing from within the fitness community. They utilize their unique approach to stressful situations to help achieve their mission of promoting a positive shift in mental and physical health. One of the key techniques they employee is their F.R.E.E system: Focus, Relaxation, Economy of movement, and Efficient breathing. This coupled with their other methodologies have allowed them to see marked benefits in participant performance both in and out of sport, as well as benefits when it comes to other mental issues such as depression and anxiety. In fact they are days away from publishing their study on the subject that was performed with Arizona State University. We are excited to have them on the show, and are looking forward to visiting them in Southern California to experience all of this first hand. https://www.deependfitness.com/ IG: @DEF_Nation ••••• EPISODE SPONSORED BY: RXSG: https://www.rxsmartgear.com/ Whether you are just starting out in your fitness journey or you are an avid workout enthusiast, a jump rope is one of the most essential pieces of equipment you should have in your workout arsenal and I cannot recommend RX Smart Gear jump ropes highly enough. Not only are they dedicated to constantly improving and challenging the community with their variety of ropes, but they are dedicated to the education when it comes to their ropes and promote proper movement and technique patterns which we love at Power Monkey Fitness. They've recently launched their new Frevo rope, made of a high impact polymer that can withstand a 50# dumbbell impact.
