In the third episode of Humboldt Waterkeeper's special series on communities at risk from sea level rise, we hear from long-time residents and relative newcomers who share their thoughts and concerns about sea level rise. We are also joined by Laurie Richmond of the Cal Poly Humboldt Sea Level Rise Institute, which is a network of academics, tribes, government agencies, NGOs, private consultants, and civic and community groups working to envision the future of our region. How will we adapt to increased flooding and rising groundwater in low-lying areas? Whether we decide to protect certain areas, relocate critical facilities, or figure out how to live with rising water levels, major changes are on the horizon. The good news is that we have time to plan, and a lot of people are thinking deeply about these issues. Many thanks to Hilanea Wilkinson, Maurice Viand, Lia Stoffers, Weeramon Sudkrathok ("Cake"), Laurie Richmond, and to Jessie Eden, who produced this episode with funding provided by the California Coastal Commission Whale Tail Grant Program.   For more info:Cal Poly Humboldt Sea Level Rise Institute's Digital Commons (reports and publications on sea level rise)California's new Sea Level Rise Guidance Wiyot Tribe's Climate Adaptation PlanEpisode 1: Is Humboldt Bay the Canary in the Coal Mine for Sea Level Rise?Episode 2: Can We Clean Up Humboldt Bay Before the Sea Rises?Support the Show.

In this episode I spoke with Trent Van Epps, who is part of the Ethereum Foundation and a key member of Protocol Guild (PG). PG is a collective of 152 Ethereum core protocol contributors who are curated to receive public good funding from ecosystem sponsors. In turn, this is meant to balance incentives for contributors to work on the Ethereum protocol and prevent high contributor turnover.During the interview we discuss  how Ethereum is actually governed more publicly than people realize, the need for alternatives to venture capital, and how other digital commons like the Linux OS is governed. We also deep dive into how PG works and why their vision for public goods funding is different than others. If you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform. - First off, tell us a bit about your background, you were a developer prior to focusing on Law. Why the change and do you feel that technical background helps you in your legal and academic career?- Before we dive into the specifics of the paper and topics, what led you to focus on this issue for research and publication?- You penned an article about how modern digital infrastructure is built on a "house of cards". Can you elaborate on that?- Your paper is broken down into several sections, so let's step through those and dissect each area a bit.- You touch on the unique aspects of OSS from proprietary code and discuss the benefits and also the risks. Can you discuss some of those?- You claim that OSS should be designated critical infrastructure and arguably under areas such as the IT Sector. First off, why do you think it should be, and why do you think it already hasn't been?- In part II of your paper you went into topics around the origins of OSS security issues and barriers to resolution. What are some of the major issues and barriers to resolving them?- You touch on economic theory such as the least-cost avoider. What exactly is that, and why do you think software vendors in this case are best-suited to fix some of the core OSS security issues?- In part III of the paper you discuss some of the current interventions and efforts. Can you touch on what some of those major efforts are?- You discuss emerging things such as the Open Source Software Security Act as well as the OMB Memo requiring vendors to self-attest to NIST's SSDF and even provide SBOM's. What are your thoughts on these emerging requirements?- How do you think we balance the need to keep the spirit of OSS, in terms of being open to everyone, cultivate a society of citizen developers and a thriving FOSS ecosystem while also pushing for more rigor and governance? Do we risk constraining the ecosystem and limiting the Federal government (and industry's) access to small innovative software projects and initiatives?

Why must new and innovative ideas come to market through old and undemocratic platforms? Cory Doctorow joins Money on the Left to discuss what Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) means for building digital commons. Award-winning science fiction writer, prolific blogger, and long-time digital activist, Doctorow explains how MMT has shaped his ongoing work in the realms of digital rights management and anti-monopoly politics. He walks us through his important critical genealogy of Intellectual Property law as well as his contribution to the urgent anti-monopoly accord called the “Access to Knowledge Treaty.” Next, we get a quick preview of two new science fiction books he is completing, both of which engage MMT as a central component of their plots. Finally, Doctorow indulges our curiosity about his aesthetic practice of posting sundry pop and other ephemeral imagery to social media.Theme music by Nahneen Kula (https://www.nahneenkula.com)Research help from Lina Reyne.Link to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/MoLsuperstructureLink to our GoFundMe: https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/money-on-the-left-superstructure

On episode two, I had the immense pleasure of taking part in a wide-ranging conversation with Jesse Darling, a Berlin-based artist whose work has been featured in numerous exhibitions at key galleries and museums, including the Serpentine Gallery and the Tate Britain. I mostly listened, as Jesse generously served sharp, insightful observations on how we define technology, the fallacy of the digital commons, and life as an artist in an increasingly precarious world. Jesse's lived experience of exploring embodiment through performativity, from online sex work to playing in bands, allows for insights into issues such as how we all are forced to run our own business and brand, not to mention our sex lives, from our computers and phones. I left the conversation with a shift in my perception of the world; Jesse's words illicit profound awareness of the fragility of things in the same manner as their visual work. Jesse DarlingGravity Road (Artforum)NTGNE (Serptine)-->People we mentioned:Cameron Rowland (Wikipedia) Nora N. Dr. Bob Cunningham doesn’t teach accounting as much as he teaches individual people who happen to be students. A three-time College of Business graduate (1973, MBA 1985, DBA 1996), Cunningham is Louisiana Tech’s second Executive in Residence and the first to tell you that his faith calls him to make connections with people, specifically students, in ways that instruct and encourage in an atmosphere of authenticity and inclusion. He was the president of his high school class in the late 1960s in Ringgold, came to Tech—and flunked out. But a couple of calls from home gave him the will to try again, and then several Tech professors reached out, convinced him they cared, encouraged him to chase the successful soul that was inside—and he did. He talks about those experiences—not all of them uplifting—and how the sum total, along with a love of accounting, entrepreneurial spirit, and his desire to see students succeed, led him back into the classroom and back into the lives of business students. Panelists Matt Broberg | Venia Logan | Sean Goggins | Georg Link Guests Ray Paik Manrique Lopez Valerio Cosentino Sponsor Linode (https://www.linode.com/) Show Notes [00:02:33] We start here with learning about what measurement tools exist in the CHAOSS project. [00:07:06] Georg gives us some context on how Bitergia, GrimoireLab, Bitergia Analytics, and CHAOSS all relate to each other. [00:09:01] Manrique fills us in on why Open Source is relevant to what they’re doing with Bitergia and GrimoireLab. [00:10:37] Since Venia is the co-creator of one of the metrics, Matt is wondering when she looks at the GrimoireLab tool chain, how does that add value to what she’s looking to achieve with it? [00:12:41] Ray has a question for Manrique and Georg and wonders what have they benefited from joining CHAOSS and what have they been able to gain from being a part of a larger community? Also, have there been other benefits that they have gained from working with other software communities related to metrics? [00:16:04] Venia mentions how she wants to applaud Bitergia for how much they advertise CHAOSS and Bitergia being completely separate entities and she explains. [00:17:55] What is the goal of using GrimoireLab and what are some examples of people using it right now? [00:22:56] Ray tells us how he uses GrimoireLab. Also, Venia gives us her thoughts on dashboarding. [00:32:22] Sean is curious to know what kinds of choices are made in the design of the GrimoireLab technology to prohibit, prevent, or create some of transparency around anything that might be used to measure and individual? Also, since Git Log stores his identifying information organically, how do they handle that technically? Manrique answers these questions. [00:00:00] Matt asks Valerio if he has any stories or ideas that come to mind on how he chose to write the software that would be interesting to somebody that may not be as deep in the code as him? [00:39:12] Valerio is a mentor for Google Summer of Code participants and he’s going to tell us a little about what that is. Picks [00:48:00] Georg’s pick is a book by Benjamin Birkinbine called, “Incorporating the Digital Commons.” [00:48:50] Venia’s pick is a term that she always uses all the time from Chris Mercer, MeasurementMarketing.io which is, “The truth is in the trend, the power is in the pattern.” [00:49:42] Manrique’s picks are quotes he uses in his presentations. One is, “If you can’t measure it, you cannot improve it.” Another one is, “Without data you a just a person with an opinion.” [00:51:21] Ray’s pick is a great book called, “The Tyranny of Metrics,” by Jerry Z. Muller. [00:52:40] Valerio’s pick is valuable advice. He says,” Metrics are important, but you need to contextualize them, and you should not understand just the metric itself, but the people who contribute to your project. When you look at the data you should have an understanding of your community to see if you are not misrepresenting or misunderstanding the data you have. [00:53:24] Sean’s pick is a technical plug to a project called PlaidML. They have a cute logo too ☺! [00:54:25] Matt’s pick is that he recently upgraded his Linux laptop to Fedora 32. It’s fun to use! Andreas Unteidig, Marco Clausen Who has access? Who designs? Who uses and who profits of collaboratively produced content? In this talk, we want to argue that these questions are not only equally relevant to the physical as well as the digital space, but increasingly interdependent. This is powerfully exemplified in many prevailing smart city visions, in which highly profitable dreams of streamlining, control and efficiency are being cultivated – predominantly by a handful of global enterprises. Within the European MAZI-Network, we are querying alternatives to these corporate, top-down implemented and centralized futures. We seek to support and amplify these alternatives and we work on the development of counter-proposals, by connecting academia with urban activism in four different pilot studies across Europe. In Berlin, the Design Research Lab of the University of the Arts is partnering with the Nachbarschaftsakademie (Neighborhood Academy) within Prinzessinnengärten: At Berlin‘s Moritzplatz, we are testing how affordable and open hardware together with open source knowledge can act as a toolkit, enabling local communities to create their very own “internet outside the internet”, and to employ network technology beyond the prescribed application of Facebook or Google. To learn from practice, we are developing a locally constrained, community owned and maintained WIFI network with a set of custom designed applications. With this, we aim at providing a network for exchange, information and participation, and ultimately at the  amplification of Berlin‘s critical urban practice through technology. By applying the Neighborhood Academy‘s core concept of “collective learning”, this process is decisively participatory and involves a wide range of actors and initiatives that are engaged in the struggles for the right to the city – both in spatial and in digital terms. With this, we go beyond the mere development of technology and open up spaces for discussion on the interdependencies of Digital Commons, Urban Struggles and the Right to the City.
