On this special 400th episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, Christopher and guest Al Ramadan discuss their new book, "The Existing Market Trap." They explore the pitfalls businesses face when trying to innovate within established market categories, emphasizing that fitting new ideas into old frameworks stifles innovation. They advocate for category design, which involves creating new market categories rather than competing within existing ones. They also introduce the "13 deadly sins" that entrepreneurs often commit, offering insights to help avoid these common mistakes. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Al Ramadan on Understanding the Existing Market Trap The "existing market trap" refers to the tendency of businesses to try to fit new ideas into old categories. This approach often stifles innovation and growth, as companies focus on competing for market share rather than creating entirely new markets. Al and Christopher argue that this mindset is fundamentally flawed and that true innovation comes from redefining problems and opportunities rather than fitting new solutions into outdated categories. Some of the consequences of the market trap include financial loses, Constantly competing in saturated markets can lead to exhaustion and disillusionment among founders, and loss of strategic direction by the company. Al Ramadan on The Power of Category Design Category design is a business strategy that focuses on creating new market categories rather than competing within existing ones. This approach allows businesses to escape the constraints of established market definitions and pursue groundbreaking innovations. Why is Category Design Important? Category design is essential because it empowers companies to reshape the market landscape rather than simply compete within it. Instead of fitting into existing frameworks, successful businesses create entirely new categories that address previously unmet needs, unlocking fresh opportunities for innovation and growth. This strategic approach also plays a critical role in building belief, both internally and externally, in a company's vision. By shaping perception and defining a unique space, category design helps generate demand, positioning the business as a leader rather than a follower. The 13 Deadly Sins of Category Design Al and Christopher introduce the concept of the "13 deadly sins" that entrepreneurs often commit when scaling their businesses. These sins serve as cautionary tales for founders who may be tempted to chase after existing market demand rather than focusing on creating new opportunities. Several common pitfalls can hinder a company's success in the market. One is the Engineer's Dilemma, where teams become overly focused on technical features instead of addressing broader market needs. Another is the Obviously Better Fallacy—the mistaken belief that having a superior product alone guarantees market success. Finally, the Horizontal Tool Illusion occurs when a company tries to serve everyone, rather than honing in on a specific market segment. These missteps can dilute value, confuse customers, and ultimately prevent a product from gaining traction. On this episode of Lochhead on Marketing, we enjoy the first of many visits from Al Ramadan in 2024, as we talk about moving from being a Category Contender to a Category King. We'll dig into what is a category contender in what it takes to win the 18-to-36-month epic category battle that every tech startup faces. So if you're an entrepreneur or marketing leader who wants to go beyond competing to actually create and dominate your own market, you're in the right place. Welcome to Lochhead on Marketing. The number one charting marketing podcast for marketers, category designers, and entrepreneurs with a different mind. Al Ramadan on Tech Industry Category Development and Dominance Christopher and Al discuss the concept of being category contenders, reflecting on past research and their book on category kings. They emphasize the dominance of one company, earning around 76% of the economics in every tech category, despite skepticism. They outline the three phases of category development: define, develop, and dominate, taking approximately 15 years. They note outliers like open AI and Google's swift battles, contrasting with Salesforce's longstanding dominance. They highlight the importance of category design, likening it to a fast-paced battle where one company wins all, stressing its critical role in the tech industry's landscape. Market strategy in a competitive industry Al and Christopher discuss marketing strategies in a competitive industry, emphasizing the importance of a winner's mindset and setting the agenda. They share a scenario where a leader in a crowded field differentiates by framing the problem uniquely, focusing on end-user needs rather than feature sets like competitors. Both highlight the futility of incremental strategies and the significance of capturing mindshare by empathizing with customer problems. They term this the "Battle Royale" for mindshare, where winning means addressing the core problem effectively, rendering feature comparisons irrelevant. Christopher also stresses the pivotal role of understanding customer problems in securing market dominance. Category design and understanding customer needs Al and Christopher discuss category design and understanding customer needs. They highlight the importance of framing the problem uniquely to differentiate in a crowded market. Christopher shares a scenario where a leader in a competitive field focuses on customer needs while competitors emphasize feature sets. They critique the common focus on technology rather than customer-centric solutions, illustrating with examples from Gartner's history and Google Plus. They emphasize that categories are about customers' problems and opportunities, not just technology, stressing the significance of defining the problem scope to win in category battles. In the episode our host Preethy Padmanabhan had an insightful discussion on the book Play Bigger with Maryanne Morrow, Chairman, Founder and CEO of 9th Gear. Maryanne shared how she is creating a new category within the Fintech space. "Play Bigger" is a business book by Al Ramadan, Dave Peterson, Christopher Lochhead, and Kevin Maney that explores the concept of category design as a strategic approach for companies to achieve long-term success. The book argues that companies should aim to create and dominate their own product category rather than competing within existing ones. It emphasizes the importance of defining a unique and compelling category narrative that sets a company apart in the market. The authors provide numerous case studies and real-world examples of companies that successfully implemented category design, such as Uber and Salesforce, to illustrate their principles. Ultimately, "Play Bigger" offers a strategic framework for businesses to become category kings and disrupt their industries.

The story we've been told our entire lives is that as we get older, we decline physically. But what if we could become more legendary as we age? We discuss this and so much more with our legendary guest, Steven Kotler. Science-based Human Performance Guru Steven Kotler is back in his fantastic new book Gnar Country: Growing old, Staying Rad. Steven lays out how cutting-edge discoveries in embodied cognition flow science, and network neuroscience have revolutionized how we think about peak performance aging. In this radically different conversation, you'll learn how to embrace peak performance aging in your life. This is a fun, fascinating and deeply insightful conversation with one of our favorite thinkers. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Steven Kotler writes a book about me The conversation starts off about the new book that Steven has written, called Gnar Country. Christopher expresses his gratitude to Steven for writing the book and acknowledges his admiration and respect for him. However, Christopher also tells Steven that it has challenged his comfortable outlook on life. The book centers around the idea of not being "dead before you're dead," encouraging readers to embrace mission-style challenges in the second half of their lives. Steven clarifies that he doesn't mean Christopher has to go surf Mavericks, a famous surfing spot known for its enormous waves. But rather that engaging in difficult and fulfilling activities can be transformative. For Steven, the second half of life is presented as an opportunity for growth and exploration. Getting back to Gnar Country Christopher, who had been easing into a more relaxed lifestyle, confesses that he was getting used to being "dead" in a figurative sense – finding comfort in smoking at home, enjoying the garden, and taking leisurely walks. However, after reading Steven's book, he feels inspired and reminded of the adventures he used to embark on with his friend Al Ramadan. Christopher mentions how he and Al would take annual trips for adrenaline-fueled activities like surfing, skiing, and scuba diving. Coincidentally, as Christopher reads the book, he receives an email from Al Ramadan, proposing a future surf and dive trip for their group of friends. This timing strengthens Christopher's belief that the universe, through Steven and Al, is nudging him to return to thrilling and challenging adventures in “Gnar country”. Steven Kotler on Park Skiing in your 50s The conversation then focuses on Steven Kotler's experience of teaching himself park skiing at the age of 50. This is despite conventional beliefs that learning such skills becomes impossible after a certain age. Steven explains that there has been scientific research done in the past 20-25 years that challenges the traditional view of aging, which assumes a gradual decline in physical and mental abilities. He emphasizes the "use it or lose it" principle, stating that with continued training and practice, individuals can maintain their skills far longer than previously thought. As a skier himself, Christopher initially finds it incredulous that Steven attempted to learn park skiing in his 50s. He recounts a personal experience of attempting a park maneuver in his early 40s and how risky it was as he continued. Christopher expresses his surprise at Steven's determination and adventurous spirit, acknowledging the challenges and potential dangers associated with park skiing. This further showcase Steven's pursuit of pushing boundaries and defying age-related limitations by taking on the challenge of park skiing in his 50s, which is pretty rad, in our opinion. To hear more from Steven Kotler and how to live in Gnar Country, download and listen to this episode. Bio Steven Kotler is a New York Times bestselling author, an award-winning journalist,
Join me on the Fast Track to Grant Writer: www.teresahuff.com/vip The Link Between Competition and a Scarcity Mindset Competition is at the heart of every grant application, and a scarcity mindset can come from a position of competition. Many nonprofits work on a very limited budget, so the struggle with a scarcity mindset is common. After all, you wouldn't be applying for grants if you already had the money, right? Nonprofits applying for the same grant are likely providing parallel services to a similar demographic, so the unfortunate reality is that organizations fighting for the same cause are competing with one another for funds and therefore, feeding the sector-wide scarcity mindset. In today's podcast, retired Army Colonel Dr. Vincent Lindenmeyer helps us think creatively to work collaboratively with otherwise competing organizations so both teams can overcome the scarcity mindset and get more done. What Collaboration and Grant Funding Look Like Together During his 26 years in the US Army, Vince specialized in engineering, logistics management, and strategic studies, so he knows what creative collaboration looks like. He now applies his knowledge and experience to the nonprofit sector. As principal of Beacon 4sight Group, Vince helps women, veterans, minorities, persons with disabilities, and the formerly incarcerated start nonprofits and businesses to create economic growth for equality and justice. Many of Vince's clients begin with little more than a dream, but he helps them get their nonprofit started in 90 days. He knows the power of creative collaboration to overcome scarcity. Like-minded organizations need to share resources, time, and talent to create in-kind partnerships based on trading complimentary skills and backgrounds. 7 Empowering Benefits of Working Collaboratively Wonderful things can happen when organizations work together: Extra personnel Everyone gets more done when you have more hands on deck working toward the same goals. Share tips and tricks Share knowledge to solve problems and work more efficiently. Stronger bottom line Struggling nonprofits become stronger by giving and receiving resources and expertise. Larger network Collaboration breeds collaboration, so when you partner with an organization, you will also get to work with their connections. Stay in your lane Collaboration means sharing complementary skills to boost each other's weaknesses so you can focus on your strengths. Increased visibility and community awareness When you get more done together, both organizations get a piece of the spotlight to bring awareness to both your cause and your brand. Celebrate your wins together Collaboration means having more to celebrate and more people to celebrate with! If we truly want to make things better and improve our mission, then we have to cooperate. It's not about us. It's not about the scarcity. It's so much more. We have to work together. We have to ask ourselves how we can give back to the community and improve each other's mission, whether or not it comes back directly to us. That's the starting point for understanding category design in any business setting. The authors of Play Bigger did not invent category design, but these gifted marketers gave this term and its underlying disciplines a name by studying more than five thousand businesses. In this conversation, co-author Al Ramadan explains what category design along with some of the book's biggest ideas: the 6-10 rule, points of view, and different vs. better. You'll also hear why Mark believes this book can be a replacement for strategic planning and why he loves chapter 10 of Play Bigger.
The Off the Lip Radio Show presents Al Ramadan from Save the Waves and Dr. David Revell who is a coastal geomorphologist with more than 25 years of experience studying marine, coastal, and estuarine processes, and who spearheaded the engineering of the San Lorenzo River Mouth in Santa Cruz CA.
Want to know the true secret to growing a business? Psst, it's the customers. This week's episode will make your company start caring about its customers. Today's guest is Mark Donnigan, Virtual CMO at Growth Stage Marketing. Listen in as Mark joins host, Casey Cheshire, and shares his hack on building a better relationship with your customers through excellent business strategy. Busted Myths: Companies can have a great strategy and never lose customers. Takeaways: Learn your competitor's tools, then learn their process, and then implement it. It is all about driving more usage and purchase of their solution. It is not actually about selling our products. Just because you hire someone who is good on paper does not mean that they are going to be great. Actions speak louder than words. Get on sales calls and go to sales calls. This will help you learn about your customers and about other businesses. No matter what you have going on with your business. The customers most likely will not care. They only care about what they will get out of it. They only care if it has anything to do with them. Marketing podcasts are a great way to get real-time marketing information. Marketing books are typically made within the year while podcasts are made almost every week. Diversity of thought is required because without it, we would fail. We would not execute meetings well it will lead to no business impact. It's more important to get any information to your customers. Make it readily available, and make it easily accessible for your customer. Quote of the Show: “The customer does not care about us. They only care about them.” (11:28) Book Recommendations: Play Bigger by Al Ramadan, Dave Peterson, Christopher Lochhead, and Kevin Maney Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markdonnigan/ Website: https://growthstage.marketing/ Podcast: https://www.owltail.com/people/ORNFP-mark-donnigan/appearances Company Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWivu309kk1u1P9jrcv3jLA Ways to Tune In: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-hard-corps-marketing-show/id1338838763 Amazon Music/Audible: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/37228621-2f9c-4905-a223-1844effb49dd Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1vVLpNI1LssMTiL6Kdsamn Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-hard-corps-marketing-show Google Podcasts: https://play.google.com/music/m/Im7mytmu2wa2mekhoeixlja5hpe?t=The_Hard_Corps_Marketing_Show YouTube: https://youtu.be/5MrbOivXAz8

On this episode of Lochhead on Marketing, our guest Al Ramadan talks about what's at stake when it comes to category battles, how you can spot the category challengers who can become category kings and queens, and what they need to become category leaders that earn 76% of the economics. There comes a time in every startup's life, where they face an epic, typically 18-to-36-month category battle. As we reported in our first book Play Bigger, the company that wins that battle earns 76% of the total value created in the category as measured by the market caps for public companies and valuations for private companies. What that means is, in any space, one company earns two thirds of the economics, which makes that category battle, which is typically 18 to 36 months long, arguably the highest stakes game in business. This episode will be available on both Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different and Lochhead on Marketing, because we think it is that important that everyone must hear about it. So without further ado, let's dive into this dialogue. Play Bigger: Looking back, and its impact today Al Ramadan comes into the conversation bearing data about the businesses and companies we've observed when writing Play Bigger, as well as some new players that have achieve the same feat since then. To recap, Al Ramadan and Christopher Lochhead wrote a book back in 2014 called Play Bigger, which talks about category design and how it can make you become a category leader in your chosen space. One of the things they've found out in the course of their research is that Category Leaders tend to corner 76% of the value of said space. Though when they wrote Play Bigger, the world was nowhere near as digitized as it is today. So a lot of the research was based on tech companies back then. But now, as more and more categories are behaving like tech categories due to digital scalability and digital reach, these findings are becoming true for every category. Category Kings to Category Leaders Al Ramadan shares that he and his team looked into the 35 Category Kings that they have observed back in Play Bigger, and check on their current situation in the market sphere. In Play Bigger, we originally published a set of research and tracked 35 Category Kings in the tech space and their market caps at the time were 465 billion and those same companies today are now worth 1.9 trillion. “If you track what happened to those 35 kings, as we call them back then, between the year of 2014 to the year of 2021. You want to know what the numbers are? At the time in 2014, the entire pool of the 35 category kings were valued at 465 billion. They are now valued at 1.9 trillion. That is, they've created more than $1,000,001.5 in market cap and the annual for those people who care about this stuff like Investors and Financial people. The compound interest growth rate of those kings. Market cap wise, is 22.46%.” – Al Ramadan Given this data, it begs the question of how many understand that this is the new dynamic, and how many entrepreneurs and marketers still think that it's a big leap of faith to follow. Al then joined Macromedia and Adobe, where he spent almost ten years changing the way people think about great digital experiences. Dr. Aaron Fritts interviews Aidoc cofounder Elad Walach about launching a company in the artificial intelligence (AI) space and applying AI in radiology imaging. --- SHOW NOTES In this episode, our host Dr. Aaron Fritts interviews Aidoc founder Elad Walach about launching a company in the artificial intelligence (AI) space, applying AI in radiology imaging, and his vision to build an AI enterprise system for healthcare institutions. Elad begins by sharing the story of how he met Aidoc cofounders Michael Braginsky and Guy Reiner as roommates when they all served in the Israeli military. All three shared a passion for technology and desired to make a difference in the healthcare sphere. Through brainstorming, they identified a clinical need to process radiology data faster and help radiologists prioritize high risk findings. He emphasizes that the technology is not designed to address a single type of disease. Instead, it is a platform that has received regulatory clearance to detect many different diseases. When hiring other Aidoc team members, Elad describes his perspective on hiring based on potential, rather than experience. He seeks out “superstars” because he believes in their ability to learn and blossom within the company. Next, Elad recounts the difficult fundraising process that the company faced when AI was not widely known yet. He advises entrepreneurs to think of their company's story as their “first sell,” and have a commitment to debrief, obtain feedback, and reiterate the pitch after every presentation. Finally, Elad shares his vision for the future of AI in healthcare. It is crucial that entrepreneurs display professionalism and responsible practices in order for healthcare systems to entrust them with patient data. On the clinical side, radiologists would benefit from AI exposure and education during their official training pathway. Finally, the growing number of AI healthcare companies will help progress the overall field, since each company can be a trailblazer in different areas such as regulatory standards and reimbursements. --- RESOURCES Aidoc: https://www.aidoc.com/ Your Vital Signs, On Camera (Pulse Camera): https://news.mit.edu/2010/pulse-camera-1004 Deep Medicine by Eric Topol: https://www.amazon.com/Deep-Medicine-Artificial-Intelligence-Healthcare/dp/1541644638 Play Bigger by Al Ramadan: https://www.amazon.com/Play-Bigger-Dreamers-Innovators-Dominate/dp/0062407619
I'm in the middle of rebranding my business. There are so many things I can do, so many things I want to do, yet I also want my brand positioning to be clear and attractive. I want others to love my brand as much as I do. As I'm working on this, I see a cartoon by Gaping Void that says, “Don't be the best in the world at what you do. Be the only person in the world at what you do.” Seeing that makes everything click. I think, “Yes! That describes my work which is unique in so many ways.” I already kind of am the only person doing what I do. And I really want to highlight that… but I need help. So my husband Mark, who I've grabbed in my excitement, says to me, “We gotta talk to Peter. This is his zone of genius.” That first conversation with Peter changes everything. What he does is revolutionary in so many ways. And I've brought him onto the show today to discuss exactly what it is that he does and how he helps redefine business. If you want to know: What is category design, how does it help you understand your audience better, and what is the most common challenge when people start approaching business with this new way of thinking? How do you use it to attract potential customers or clients? And how did a customer survey company use category design and find itself worth several billion dollars more than competitors like Survey Monkey? Get a pen and your replay button ready because this episode is chock full of priceless lessons you'll want to listen to again and again! What you will learn in this episode: How to rethink your business positioning and make it unique How POV storytelling in marketing messages differs from conventional marketing How to use category design to spark intrigue in your business Who is Peter? As a graduate of Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Peter Goldie has spent the past decade as an angel investor and used his knack for creating and launching market-dominating products to advise on business, strategy, and marketing. He honed his marketing expertise while in Brand Management at Procter & Gamble where he built revenue for brands such as Crisco, Pringles, and Ivory. Now his firm advises companies on the emerging concept of category design for business. In addition, Peter founded two startups and has held several operational roles at different companies over the years. He served as GM and SVP at the top digital e-commerce agency Fluid and was the GM and VP at Macromedia where he helped make Flash the most distributed software worldwide. He also took on the position of GM at Alias/Wavefront where he assisted in the creation of the Computer-Aided Industrial Design (CAID) category and the launching of the world's leading 3D animation product, Maya (which won an Oscar for scientific and technical achievement). We're joined by the famed Al Ramadan, author of the seminal book “Play bigger: how pirates dreamers and innovators create and dominate markets” which first introduced Category Design to the world. The book has since sold more than one hundred thousand copies and been heralded by people like Marc Benioff of SalesForce and Jim Goetz of Sequoia. We're diving deep on category design, how it has evolved since inception in 2016 and how it's being applied by forward thinking VCs throughout Silicon Valley and the world. In this episode you'll learn:– What is Category Design and why it's so central to creating the major outcomes we're all chasing in VC- What Al Ramadan would wish he had done differently when first launching the book and category of “category design” - How some of the best VCs employ category design in their work with startups- What's next for the category of “category design” and what we should be keeping our eyes peeled for.

In Lochhead on Marketing episode 127, we talked with Al Ramadan, Co-founder of Play Bigger Advisors and co-author of Play Bigger, the book. On that episode, we unpacked the upcoming Rivian IPO. Now that Rivian has gone public, we thought it would be cool to get together again, and unpack what happened through a category design lens. Specifically, how Rivian was able to use their IPO not just as a financing event, but a category-defining event. Welcome to Lochhead on Marketing. The number one charting marketing podcast for marketers, category designers, and entrepreneurs with a different mind. The Rivian IPO: An Update after the Launch Al Ramadan recaps what Rivian IPO was during the public offering, which had a market cap of $60 billion at the time. This was already a very impressive number, considering that it was still an IPO. What people didn't anticipate is that after Rivian's launch, they blew well past that and now sits over $100 billion in valuation. As a result, they are now the third largest automotive company behind Tesla and Toyota. All in all, it is an incredible IPO, and one to observe in the future as it develops. Betting on Potential vs Performance Despite all that, there are those who are still skeptic of what had happen, and consider it as a fluke or a big risk. But it all boils down to betting on the potential of an idea, rather than just prior performance. Right now, some investors are seeing things in a new light. “I think it's hard for investors to understand because that's been just been the way they are. They look at multiples of revenue or multiples of trucks shipped, or all of those other vital metrics within an organization. But the new investors I think, are starting to look past that.” – Al Ramadan Paving the Way into a New Category What Al finds interesting is that currently, 70% or more of the market cap for the electronic car category is cornered by Tesla. Yet Rivian might have to potential to great its own category within it, and be the category king for it. Because Rivian is not just planning on the electronic cars and trucks. They are also including everything else that comes along with it. We're talking charging networks and stations, dealerships, and the like. It's taking into consideration the whole ecosystem, as supposed to just that one product. “So if you go into this with the mindset of like, I'm going to value this as an automotive industry as it was over the last 125 years, you're gonna miss big time.” – Al Ramadan To hear more from Christopher and Al and their thoughts and updates on the Rivian IPO, download and listen to this episode. Bio Al Ramadan is a co-founding partner of Play Bigger Advisors and coauthor of the book, Play Bigger. He also co-founded Quokka Sports, which revolutionized the way people experience sport online. Al then joined Macromedia and Adobe, where he spent almost ten years changing the way people think about great digital experiences. At Adobe, Al led teams that created the Rich Internet Applications category and helped develop the discipline of experience design. In the early ‘90s he applied data science to Australia's Americas Cup — an innovation in sports performance analytics. His work in sailing led directly to the idea for Quokka. He lives in Santa Cruz, California. We hope you enjoyed this episode of Lochhead on Marketing™! Christopher loves hearing from his listeners. As we all know, Context is everything. Around here, we believe that thinking about thinking is the most important kind of thinking. So if you want to design a different future, the context of your thinking matters. In this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we discuss context and much more with Kevin Maney. Kevin Maney is the co-founder of Category Design Advisors, where he and his partners advise CEOs on how to design and dominate market categories. He is also one of the godfathers of Category Design, and one of the co-authors of Play Bigger, alongside Al Ramadan and myself. We talk about a lot of topics that will help frame your think, and why the barriers to entry for Category Design keep dropping. We also discuss why Category Design is more important now than it was in 2006. To know why that's the case, stay tuned to this episode. Kevin Maney On Playing Bigger It has been five years since Play Bigger came out, and there have been a lot of changes in Category Design over the years. Kevin suggests that they should get together again and pool together what they have learned over the years. That said, Kevin has noticed a few things that were big drivers of why category creation and design is so important. Some of them they have touched on in Play Bigger, but did not have the bandwidth to delve deeper into. These drivers are what Kevin and the others have been explaining to CEOs over the past years, so they can be aware of how important it is in dominating the market. Though the most obvious catalyst in the recent years has been COVID. COVID has accelerated the amount of category breakthroughs, mostly brought about by necessity. “One of the things that always happens in these times of crisis or radical change like wars, a pandemic, or other things that truly shake up the world (is that) everybody starts doing things in different ways, or looking for new solutions. And it really opens up the possibility of creating new things and new categories that didn't exist before, solving old problems in new ways or, or addressing problems that have never existed before that arise because of what's going on.” – Kevin Maney Kevin Maney on the End of Friction In any business or market, there will always be friction present. One of the friction Kevin talks about is the friction of geography, and how that can affect the market. Because of such frictions, most people are limited to choose what is available, instead of the category leader for that market. Fast forward to today, and those frictions are slowly being removed. Now that people have access to a wider variety of the market, they will tend to gravitate towards the category leaders of said category. Which makes aiming to be a category leader is a must now, lest you get left behind. “The more that the friction of geography disappears, the more we can all choose the global, or at least national category leader of any particular category. So that makes it all the more important in whatever business you're in to try to be that category leader, or you're really just going to get sucked down the drain.” – Kevin Maney The Prevalence of Disintermediation Today The conversation then shifts to how different things are done today compared to just a few years back. In a way, there's more disintermediation nowadays compared to the .com era. One of the way it's very visible now is how we consume entertainment. With the advent of different social media platforms, normal people can interact directly with their idols, rather than having to go to concerts or shows. On the entertainers themselves, the old formula is getting discovered and debuting on TV or film. Nowadays, people could go viral on their own efforts, or at least without the backing of a major corporation and such. All this because we have reduced the friction required to make things possible. In the early 2000s, you'd need a lot of equipment, money, and know-how to shoot a simple video,

The electric vehicle category is a giant new mega category that is completely changing the transportation landscape. Rivian is a startup who has yet to ship a product, yet somehow is pioneering a differentiated category in EVs. It is also on the verge of what will likely be a massive, multi-billion dollar IPO. In this episode of Lochhead on Marketing, Al Ramadan and I unpack all of it through the category lens. He has been blogging about this lately, so it seems fitting to invite him and have a conversation about it. If Al's name sounds familiar, that's because he and I co-founded Play Bigger Advisors, and coauthored the book, Play Bigger together. So sit back and enjoy this dialogue between two category design enthusiasts as we share our thoughts on Rivian's new upcoming massive IPO. Al Ramadan on Rivian and the Upcoming IPO Al shares his thoughts on Rivian, and what they are doing for the Electric Vehicle category. He describes its founder as something of a combination of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, and thinks he is a remarkable entrepreneur. He then talks about the upcoming IPO they have planned to release around Thanksgiving. “A couple weeks ago, they announced that they're going to do this IPO around Thanksgiving. And it's an IPO, not a spec. All of the other EVs are going out with specs. And the zinger was that the market cap was going to be $80 billion. Bigger than GM, bigger than Ford. But it was just this moment in time where you look at this thing is like, “what, they haven't shipped the vehicle”. And they've valued more than Toyota's entire SUV line and Ford or GM, it just doesn't make (sense). That's just crazy. And so the category designer in me sort of took over and started dissecting all of their filings and I came up with a few insights that I think is worth sharing. ” - Al Ramadan The Potential of the Rivian IPO For something that has not even shipped the product yet, it seems amazing that they are valued so highly. For it to do so well at this point, it must've hit all the right notes and laid out its potential to be able to grab the attention of investors and consumers. “What they miss always, is what the real drivers of market cap are. Which is, number one: what's the potential for this category? Number two: do we believe that this company can prosecute the magic triangle company; product, company, and category and earn 76% of the economics? And number three: when we look at their numbers, metrics, financials, etc., are we comforted about the first two things? And if the answer to all of those is that you got a company who's designing a market category, that right now looks like that has the potential of almost infinity.” - Christopher Lochhead Al agrees with this points, and further explains how this new IPO is changing the vehicle industry, and how the transactions and support will be implemented once it comes out. Up until now, most EVs still operate in the traditional car dealership model. Rivian seeks to create a new category centered not just on the cars, but the services provided with it. Reactions to the Rivian IPO One of the things that piqued Al's interest was how certain people or companies reacted when the valuation for the Rivian IPO went out. One particular instance was Elon Musk tweeting about it, saying that they should at least put out a product before the IPO. It seemed illogical that someone like him would be alarmed by this, especially if you're perceived as being the king of a certain category. Yet for a brief moment there, it seems that he has shown concern over the matter, and saw a challenger on the rise. According to Al, it's right that he would be concerned. Because if you look at it, Rivian seems to be taking the Electric Vehicle category and evolving it to something that can make their current category obsolete in the future. While the implementation of which remains to be seen, it's definitely enough to be concerned about.

Because if you chase everything that comes along, you're gonna be wasting a lot of time and it's almost impossible to do any real business unless you know exactly what you're looking for to a very high degree of specificity.” “I talk about the 3 Ps, passion, persistence, perseverance. Find something you love to do, do it always and get better at it. Overcome the roadblocks. They'll eventually almost never really stand in your way from getting further. And if you could find that thing that you're passionate about, it takes care of the other Ps. And if you could find that one thing that you're passionate about, you don't mind doing it consistently. Naomi Rozenfeld is the EVP of Revenue at Wix Answers, where she leads the global Marketing and Sales strategy. Naomi is passionate about helping companies and start-ups provide best-in-class customer experiences and transforming the way companies provide Customer Support. She was previously the Director of GTM at Wix Answers and Head of Product Marketing at Wix.com. Prior to joining Wix.com, Naomi was an Entrepreneur and founded two travel start-ups. Questions Could you share with us a little bit about your journey? Could you just share with us a little bit about what Wix provides and how you're able to meet your customer's expectations based on what the market is looking for? In terms of customer experience and Wix being able to fulfil that for their customers, what are some of the ways that you differentiate yourself from other service providers that give that same kind of service? Could you share with us maybe what's one online resource, tool, website, or app that you absolutely cannot live without in your business? In your journey, in your professional journey and even in your personal journey, are there any books that have had the biggest impact on you, books that have really inspired you? Maybe could you share one or two with us? We have a lot of listeners who are business owners, some of them are managers in organizations where they are charged with the responsibility of enhancing customer experience, building customer loyalty, and they feel they have great products and services, but they lack the constantly motivated human capital. If you are sitting across the table from one of those persons, what's the one piece of advice that you would give them to have a successful business? Could you share with us maybe one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about - maybe something you're working on to develop yourself or your people. Where can they find you online? Do you have a quote or a saying that during times of adversity or challenge you'll tend to revert to this quote, it kind of helps to get you back on track or keep you focused on what you need to achieve or get through? Highlights Naomi’s Journey Naomi shared that quite a long time ago; she started her journey as an entrepreneur. She always had this dream to build her own business, be her own boss. And she set out on that journey; she would say a pretty young age. She started her first startup, she was always very passionate about the travel space, it seemed ripe for disruption, or there were a lot of startups trying to tackle a lot of everyday problems that people had when it came to traveling. She founded her first startup with two other founders, which quickly actually turned into a full on business that was just running already by itself. They had won a really big tender from the Jerusalem municipality for travel and very quickly just became a business. She sold her shares there and she went on to found the second startup with another founder, also in the travel space, trying to tackle a completely different problem, which was more about travel marketplaces and just travel ideas. And that one pretty much hit her in the face. She would say about a year into it, her co-founder and her had very different views of how they wanted to take that startup forward. And she’d found herself pretty much one year with a startup that she put a lot into just basically fizzling. So, she pretty much hit that 99% statistic of startups failing. And at that point she had a friend who she’d known from one of the accelerator programs that she was part of that said to her, “Hey, I know that they're trying to build a product marketing team at Wix, would you be interested if I connect you to somebody?” She was kind of broke looking for a job that was a little bit more stable and going to provide her with a little bit more stability. And she said, “Sure, why not?” Her idea was to go to Wix maybe for a couple of years, save up again and go back to being an entrepreneur. And here she is, six and a half years later, still at Wix. What Does Wix Provides And Meeting Customer’s Expectations Naomi shared that Wix is a pretty well known as a cloud-based web development company that makes it easy for anybody to have an online presence. And that could be everything from creating your website online, your portfolio, regardless of what business or vertical you're coming from. And also to provide you with all of the tools that you need in order to maintain and to run your business on a daily basis. So, everything from managing your bookings to your payments, to your customers and all of that communication is pretty much what Wix is known for in the industry. And she had pretty much started in the marketing department, heading the product marketing team there. And there's always been a very, very huge focus as a SAS centric company on product. And everything that they did in terms of marketing was about how do they enable their users, how do they inspire them? But there was always a very strong connection to the product. And she would say about a couple years into her journey at Wix, she had heard about this new B2B product, something completely different than what they were doing at Wix. Wix is a very successful and large B2C company, today they have almost 200 million users around the world and there was this new initiative starting kind of inside of Wix that was looking to go to market. And basically what it was, was looking to take their home-grown, in-house built platform that they use for customer support at Wix, and to start basically offering that to other businesses. She was super intrigued; she met with Elad Eran who is the CEO of Wix Answers. And he was basically running this project from day one. And she had met him for a cup of coffee, and she had heard about his vision. She would hear about customer support as something that was completely new to her. And she had known a lot about marketing, a lot about obviously like web tools being part of Wix and suddenly there was this new product that was completely unrelated to Wix, for total B2B in terms of its business model and its needs that was looking to basically launch out of the larger wix.com. And she heard about his vision, she heard about this story and at that point, her knowledge on support was maybe Zendesk. She had known that Zendesk was a tool that you use, obviously for customer support for more than that, she didn't really know. And she was so intrigued and excited to hear about where they saw this product going and that the same pain point that Wix was trying to solve for many years ago and building out this own in-house technology that was now also very relevant to other businesses 10 years later, she really want in on this. And, pretty much from that point, the rest is history and she has been with Wix Answers since that point. What Are Some Ways Wix Differentiate From Other Service Providers Naomi stated that this is a really good question, in terms of tooling and obviously looking at this industry, which is a very saturated space and a very competitive one at that. Any business, regardless of how big or small you are, you're always going to need tools to communicate with your customers, that's really pretty much like the heart of every business is communicating with your customers and supporting them. And she thinks what really is different about Wix Answers is the story that kind of lies behind how this product came to be. And it's a lot like AWUS when you think about it; the only difference is that they didn't really create an industry. They were a real business that they were growing super fast. Wix was at the point of this tipping point of explosive growth; their users were growing by the millions. They were a SAS centric company; they really needed ways to connect the product teams, the marketing teams with the user voice. And from day one, they've always been very centered around capturing that user voice in terms of their future roadmap, their strategy, and really understanding where they were going as a company. They looked in the market for tools and nothing really was able to capture all of that, nothing was really able to connect all of those dots or put knowledge at the hands of their users in the way that they had imagined it, nothing was really kind of connecting support to the internal part of the organization. It was always those traditional help desks, where you expect your users to go open a ticket, get a reply, and then you just solve that ticket and you're done with that. And they saw it as much more, they knew that their product teams are their future roadmap would had to be connected to the users. So, they set out on this journey to build this tool. Now, if you look in the market today, there's a lot of different solutions that offer basically everything, you can connect all of your different channels. You obviously can have a lot of timeline view of your customers, but what really sets Wix Answers apart is the way they built the foundation of it. So, all of your channels are just seamlessly connected into one single timeline. So, regardless of whether a user or a customer starts to chat with you, and then they want a call back, or they want to get an email, or you want to follow up with an article, everything is just the seamless transition between channels. And that's just pretty much a by-product of them building their own in-house technology. So, they don't have third-party apps, and they don't have third-party vendors that are integrated into their platform. Everything is just pretty much built in into one really cohesive product and platform. And the end result is that your users have a much more seamless transition between any of your channels. You obviously have much pure and better customer data and just data at all. And the agents have one interface that is like that single source of truth about your customers. And that she would say is pretty much one of the biggest differentiators that they have today. And when it comes to like scale and doing things in high volume, they know a thing or two about that in terms of growing really quickly. And there's a lot of businesses that they talked to today, whether they're startups or even really large scale operations that do things at high volume. And when you're trying to do something at high volume, and you need to move the needle just a little bit, even if it's just 1% or just a small fraction of making changes that has really large implications. And what they found is that even smaller organizations like startups that were very lean and needed to move really quickly were suffering from the same thing that really large businesses were suffering from. And that was just a high dependency on development and high cost of running their operations, because they really needed that R and D dependency in order to move or to execute anything within the support organization. And the way they had engineered and designed this platform was that pretty much, if you want to make a change between now and tomorrow, you want to launch a new channel, you want to change your entire help center. You have to pivot, or you need to just really quickly adapt, you're able to do that without having to go to a project manager, who's going to build it out or plan it for you. You don't really need the developers to obviously start building that out for you and then launch. And that ability to go faster than ever, and to move and to iterate in a much faster way is really, really impactful for businesses today, especially when support and CX is really like the heart of any business and organization. Me: I agreed, totally agreed. So, Wix has definitely been able to bridge that gap for a way that customers can communicate with their clients in a very easy, seamless, frictionless way. And people don't like to jump through hoops, the less steps that they have to take the, the much better experience that they have. And you want them to feel motivated to interface with your platform. App, Website or Tool that Naomi Absolutely Can’t Live Without in Her Business When asked about an online tool that she cannot live without in her business, Naomi stated that she’s not sure that she’s going to be that creative with this one. It might actually sound a little bit mundane, but she feels that LinkedIn has pretty much changed her life and so many people around us. She remembers when she started at this, business cards were a big deal, they still are. She has a whole bunch of business cards sitting in her bag waiting to be given out probably the next conference, if they'll have one in the near future given this whole COVID situation. But LinkedIn really made it easy to get to people that you would otherwise have a hard time getting through to. And she finds that so many interesting conversations, partnerships, relationships have just started on LinkedIn, and it's just become like a tool that she really can't live without, regardless of whether if it's on a personal connection level or even within their business. Just reaching out to people and striking up a conversation around subject matter that's important to you, it's just really become easier than ever thanks to LinkedIn. Books That Have Had the Greatest Impact on Naomi When asked about books that had the biggest impact, Naomi stated that there's a book that she read actually many years ago, it was about 5 years ago. She read this one with her son, they made it kind of like an everyday thing that she would read to him chapters in this book. And it's actually written by RJ Palacio and the book is called Wonder, and it's actually a children's book. She always thinks that somehow children's books always have like very interesting messages about life in them and this one really kind of got to her. It was a story about a friendship and just how raw human relationships and how complex they can be sometimes. And obviously this was written for probably children between the age of 10 to 12, but it was just a really wonderful book that was just drawing a lot of depth in terms of human nature, friendships, fear, courage and that one kind of stuck with her. Another book that she actually just finished as of recently, that's more in the adults playing field is called Play Bigger: How Pirates, Dreamers, and Innovators Create and Dominate Markets by Al Ramadan. And this one's a very interesting book as well, they kind of title it as how pirates and dreamers, innovators can create and dominate markets. And what she really, really loves about this one is that a lot of the way we look at things is just the mindset. And sometimes to really succeed at something, you just need to change the conversation or change the category, or just change the way you approach something. And it just really comes from this place of not being the follower, but just trying to find different ways to lead. And that's been a book that she will probably be revisiting again, very well-written and some really good ideas in that one. It's called Play Bigger. Advice for Business Owners to Have a Successful Business When asked about advice that she would give a business owners to have a successful business, Naomi mentioned definitely focus. It sounds really simple and she can say first-hand, she has always struggled with this herself. Also, in the businesses that she has built and also with the teams that they lead today, especially when you're working with talented people that have a lot of different ideas and especially when you're building any new business, you want to pretty much just tackle it all. And she would just say that sometimes focus is something that actually really motivates the teams, it sounds a little bit contrary or counter-intuitive because you can have a lot of really great ideas and people get highly motivated by them, but then trying to tackle too much too soon or not, all of your areas of strengths can sometimes be very de-motivating to teams and people that are helping you obviously grow your business and create the strategies and taking things forward on a daily basis. So, focus has tended to be something that, where she feels when there needs to be a push to motivation, just to look at everything, look at that one area that you can really do well at, obviously involve your teams, talk to them, and that focus has a tendency to kind of invigorate that sense of like, “Okay, we're really going to go after this. We're going to tackle it and we can really win.” What Naomi is Really Excited About Now! Naomi shared that there's a lot of things that are going on right now. There's definitely a project that she thinks they've been working on really, really hard that she knows is a cross team effort and was something that was really new and different that they were trying to launch. And it's a new community that they're going to be launching next month, that's going to actually be in the space of customer experience, and they're looking to really create a whole new conversation with people and connect them in a way that they haven't really been connected before in this space. And it's been something that they've been planning as a team for a very, very long time carefully considering the leaders, the brands, the emerging technologies and companies that they really wanted them to be part of this conversation. And she knows it was a huge cross team effort that they've been basically putting a lot of resources and focus on that. She would say that that's something that right now they're super excited about, and it's going to be a really big one for them in terms of successfully launching this next month. Where Can We Find Naomi Online Naomi shared listeners can find her at – LinkedIn – Naomi Rozenfeld LinkedIn – Wix Answers Website – www.wixanswers.com Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Naomi Uses Naomi shared that there's something that kind of stuck with her, she thinks more so as a woman and as a woman in business, also as a mother, she has two boys, but also a girl. So, she understand that the way that we want to sometimes lead things and prove our independence, sometimes we need to push a little bit harder than some of our counterparts. And there's definitely a quote that kind of stuck with her from Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It went something along the lines of, “My mother always told me to be a lady. And for her, that meant to be your own person, be independent.” And that's something that she pushed through on a lot is just being really, obviously your own person, to be independent, but also from the aspect of being a woman and what that means today, especially in the business world and leading teams and to see women obviously in positions of power and making really big decisions, that for her is like a quote that goes really far. 2020 has been a whirlwind for us all so far. With Covid-19, Black Lives Matter and the economy, it can feel overwhelming as senior executives and entrepreneurs with what we can do (and not do). But if we allow ourselves to be vulnerable and open, the opportunity for growth opens. Today we're joined by Martin Enault, the co-founder and CEO of Intellitix. We discuss what role we play as leaders in the mental health dialogue, what we've learnt from our personal mental health journeys and what we should strive for in entrepreneurship going forward. A creative business leader with an explorer's ingenuity and drive, Martin Enault embraces new ways of experiencing the world and doing business differently. As any good developer can tell you, if you release a product you feel good about, you waited WAY TOO LONG to get said product on the market. Last summer, Nori’s product team was spending time onboarding farmers, building up auctions and a spot market, but they didn’t have a defined launch date. And they were trying to build out the Nori marketplace in its entirety—before customers had the opportunity to use it. So, what initiated the team’s pivot to an iterative process on an accelerated timeline? Michael Leggett is Nori’s Director of Product, Jacob Farny is the team’s Principal Product Designer, Jaycen Horton serves as the Principal Blockchain Architect, and Software Developer Richie “never writes code with bugs” Farman. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, the Nori product team joins Ross for a product update, walking us through what they’ve been working on and how their priorities have shifted since last summer. They describe how participating in Techstars inspired the decision to sell carbon removal for cash, driving them to think iteratively to get a product out much sooner. The team explains their greatest challenges leading up to the Lightning Sale and in the migration to the ongoing Live Sale, discussing why serialization and working on the blockchain make their job more difficult. Listen in to understand the Nori product team’s audacious goals for Q1 (and beyond) and learn how they are working to scale the sale of NRTs moving forward. Coaching has seen a huge rise in the last few years. But with this rise, comes a need to better understand what the fundamental role of coaching is. In this week’s episode, Dr Sheri Jacobson helps uncover the difference between therapy and coaching, how to find the right coach for you, and coaching in a workplace setting. Sheri started her therapy training in 1997, so with an extensive background, including working for the NHS and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, she’s the Founder of a UK-wide marketplace, Harley Therapy, where it’s their mission to connect the public with experienced and committed practitioners working to alleviate emotional difficulties and promote psychological health. A great deal of talent and resources are dedicated to the development of technology that makes the lives of the privileged even easier. What if that kind of energy and investment was redirected to problems like conservation and climate change? How can we inspire more entrepreneurs to focus on the sustainability space? And what can we do to support the startups that are working to make the world a better place? Zach Nies is the Managing Director of the Techstars Sustainability Accelerator, August Ritter serves as Program Director of The Nature Conservancy’s partnership with Techstars, and Hannah Davis is the Program Director of the Techstars Sustainability Accelerator. On this episode of Reversing Climate Change, August, Zach and Hannah join Alexsandra, Jason and Christophe to discuss the origin of The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) partnership with Techstars and share the idea behind the program—to create a community of mission-driven companies and help them achieve a year’s worth of progress in just three months. August weighs in on what TNC and Techstars look for in a company, Hannah shares the purpose behind the Mentor Madness component of the program, and Zach addresses the role of VC money in expanding the possibilities for tech teams in the sustainability space. In this show, I'm going to be talking to you not only as speakers but as marketers of your message. That's because I've had students raising the question of how long you should be sharing the same presentation before you change things up? I have some strong views on this. I believe there are some fundamental marketing principles that come into play when you are considering this question as a public speaker. The students that asked about this were potentially going to make a big mistake and I don't want you to fall into the same trap too… Enjoy! Sarah Tuneberg thinks it’s incredibly unproductive to argue about whether a particular flood or drought was caused by climate change. The fact is, catastrophic events are happening more and more frequently, and we have to take action to mitigate the risks. So, how can we use the data available to us to promote this kind of disaster resilience? Sarah is the Cofounder and CEO of Geospiza, a software company that helps corporations visualize, understand and take action around climate risks. Sarah has 10-plus years of experience in emergency management and public health, and she is committed to developing data-driven, evidence-based solutions to reduce risk and enhance resilience, especially for the most vulnerable. Sarah earned her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Georgia and her Master’s in Public Health from Tulane. Today, Sarah joins Ross and Christophe to share the Geospiza origin story and discuss what inspired their pivot from serving state and local governments to large, multinational corporations. She offers an example of how a client is using Geospiza software to make strategic business decisions and describes how climate risk is changing the insurance industry as well as contract law. Sarah also addresses ongoing development in risky areas and explains who is likely to bear the brunt of climate change. Listen in for Sarah’s insight around why we don’t take action around disaster resilience and learn why she believes there is nothing natural about so-called natural disasters. I recently met with a business owner who wanted to find out more about sales funnels. When I met with them, they talked me through their business and told me that they were failing to get traction with the courses they were selling, and they thought sales funnels would help. IMHO there was a reason they were failing to get traction and not having a sales funnel wasn’t it. In this show I want to share about market positioning and category design, concepts which I think could help the business owner I spoke to and maybe you too. There are some great examples of entrepreneurs and visionaries who have successfully made their company stand out through deliberately and in some cases, accidentally, creating a category and putting themselves at the top of it. I often talk about helping you and your business stand out and I’m hoping this episode gives you more food for thought and another angle to come at this from. I will also cover sales funnels so that if you haven’t come across them you can see where and when they might fit into your business. Enjoy! What we’re going to cover: The classic mistake the business owner and many of us make from a scarcity mindset. What are sales funnels and how they work best. Need based business design. Why being ‘better’ is bad. How you can condition the market to have an epiphany. Why articulating the problem best makes you a winner. Why self-anointment isn’t the same thing and can undermine you. What we can learn from Amazon, UBER and Dyson Thanks for listening! To share your thoughts: leave a comment below. Share this show on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. Today we have Christopher Lochhead who started his first company at 18 and retired 30 years later. He is a three-time public company CMO, best selling author, and host of Legends and Losers Podcast. He was a co-founder of Play Bigger Advisors, served as Chief Marketing Officer of Mercury Interactive, a $1B software company that was acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 2006 for $4.5B. He is coauthor with Al Ramadan and Dave Peterson and Kevin Maney of Play Bigger: How pirates, dreamers, and innovators create and dominate markets. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: [1:25] Jeremy introduces his guest, Christopher Lochhead. [3:00] The world doesn’t need more bullshit. [12:30] Where is podcasting going? Is it oversaturated? [17:00] Christopher talks about his Father-In-Law and his fruit orchard. [22:30] What was the motivation for writing the book, “Play Bigger?” [27:20] A healthy disregard for the status quo. [29:00] Christopher talks about getting kicked out of school. [32:00] The value of entrepreneurship and the evolution of Silicon Valley. [36:00] What did Mercury Interactive do? What made it stand out? [42:00] Why you should strive to be a “Category King.” [45:00] Christopher talks about rolling out BTO. [50:30] Testing products and ideas often fail to lead a to breakthrough. [53:30] A great example of creating a new category. [56:30] Position yourself or be positioned! [59:30] Categories make brands not the other way around. [1:02:30] Until someone reimagines the problem, nothing is going to change. [1:06:30] Christopher talks about his work with One Life. [1:10:00] How to connect with Christopher and what inspires him. [1:12:30] Christopher describes all the items he has in his office. In this episode… What does it mean to become a category king? Is it wise to branch out and create a new category to become it’s de facto leader? Why is this better than challenging existing competition? You’ll hear the answer to these questions and much more from special guest, Christopher Lochhead on this episode of Inspired Insider. In his conversation with Jeremy, Christopher opens up about his time at Mercury Interactive, why the world doesn’t need more bullshit, what inspired him and his partners to write Play Bigger, and so much more! There is a ton of great insights that Christopher has to share, don’t miss a minute of it! Be honest, aren’t you sick of all the bullshit that gets passed around as “Cutting edge” and “Innovative” these days? If that’s you, you aren’t alone! It seems that there is a growing number of people who are ready to kick curated sound bites to the curb in search of a more authentic and genuine existence. Helping to lead that charge is accomplished business leader and podcast host, Christopher Lochhead. Christopher is a no-nonsense kind of guy who loves to tell stories and ruffle a few feathers. What can you learn from Christopher's refreshing approach? What is in the cards for the podcasting industry? Is the market truly over-saturated as many people claim or are the party just getting started? It seems like everyone and their neighbor has a podcast these days, what role does the low overhead aspect play in the equation? Avid podcaster, Christopher Lochhead is convinced that podcasting is just at the beginning of it’s run. He sees a massive potential for podcasting to grow and evolve due to the fact that new categories and creative ways of telling stories continue to pop up left and right. The message of defeating the competition has been drilled so hard into the minds of business people that many have failed to see the immense opportunity to be found in the alternative. The alternative approach as described by Christopher Lochhead is to completely sidestep the competition and create a brand new category. This is the approach that Google, Netflix, and Apple took and those companies have shaped our economy and our society in ways they would never have if they played it safe! What are you waiting for? Stop playing it safe! Muster up the boldness to get out there and become a Category King! Let’s face it, you have to be a little discontent with life to be an innovator or entrepreneur. The question is, do you continue to feed off of that discontent or is it simply the spark that starts a chain reaction. Christopher Lochhead strongly believes that leaders who want to make a lasting impact need to stay discontent with the status quo. Don’t settle! Push the envelope, break barriers, and think outside of the box! Either you position yourself in the marketplace or the marketplace will position you. Learn from Christopher’s helpful insights and go even further by checking out his podcast and his book, links to both can be found in the resources section at the end of this post! Innovations in data have brought about the age of personalized products at scale. How does this fit into the greater concept of unscaling? How is it so different from the age of scale? How will blockchain actually protect our privacy? On this episode, Kevin Maney shares some of the key insights from his latest book including living your life as a personal enterprise and personalized education. This new group of inventions is enabling something very different in this idea of scale. -Kevin Maney 3 Things We Learned Early innovations led to the concept of scale Inventions of the 19th century created the conditions that brought about scale. That set in motion the idea of economies of scale, where the ultimate goal of a business was to generate profit from selling one thing to the most people. Healthcare will shift towards a more personal solution So far healthcare has been a mass market product but it's going to be affected by the market-of-one model. This means the healthcare system can actually get to know your individual health patterns and gear a more personalized treatment towards them. We're heading towards the model of a personal enterprise Because of the data and the network that we are all a part of, each person will be able to leverage whatever they are good at. They will also be able to connect to a market for what they do and be able to make a living. When mobile, social and cloud started happening, they led to the creation of enormous amounts of data that is enabling something very different in the idea of scale. It's not going to be mass markets anymore, but rather markets-of-one on a massive scale. This will flow through many facets of human life, from healthcare to education, and cause us to shift back to how things were pre-1880, where services were personalized and geared towards the individual. Automation will play a large role in this shift, allowing it to be done profitably. It won't be via craftsmanship, but through business. Guest Bio Kevin Maney is a best-selling author and award-winning columnist. Maney co-authored, with Al Ramadan, Dave Peterson and Christopher Lochhead, the 2015 book Play Bigger: How Pirates, Dreamers and Innovators Create and Dominate Markets, published by Harper Business.
