Should we worry about space junk falling from Saskatchewan skies? Why are we building a rocket ship launch pad in Nova Scotia? What would it take to build a human settlement on the moon, or even Mars? Who's winning the space race, China or the West? Space expert Elizabeth Howell answers our spacey questions.
When we think about Martian explorers today, we mostly hear about two rovers that trawl small zones of the planet: the Opportunity rover that exceeded a marathon's distance in 2015, and the Curiosity rover that is trying to track down habitability in the planet's ancient past. Neither of these rovers would have been possible, however, without the Marnier 9 mission, that began in 1971. Written by Elizabeth Howell. Narration by Dr. Nicholas B. Breyfogle. From Borderline to Beautiful: Hope & Help for BPD with Rose Skeeters, MA, LPC, PN2
Borderline Personality Disorder is no longer considered a chronic illness. You can lead a great life with a sensitive, intense, hyperbolic... or any temperament for that matter with hard work, grit, endurance, tenacity, and the willingness to get uncomfortable. Check out this article for confirmation of this assertion: https://ct.counseling.org/2022/10/not-a-monster-destigmatizing-borderline-personality-disorder/ In this episode, I define and demystify dissociation and offer a first step strategy to understand one's own dissociative profile. The key to better understanding dissociation rests in normalizing it. Check out these resources that were referenced in the podcast: One of the leading psychiatric scholars in the treatment of dissociation is Dr. Elizabeth Howell. In her book The Dissociative Mind, she contends [2]: Chronic trauma...that occurs early in life has profound effects on personality development and can lead to the development of dissociative identity disorder (DID), other dissociative disorders, personality disorders, psychotic thinking, and a host of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse. In my view, DID is simply an extreme version of the dissociative structure of the psyche that characterizes us all. Dissociation, in a general sense, refers to the rigid separation of parts of experience, including somatic experience, consciousness, affects, perception, identity, and memory. Shane Stewart, DMBA Certified Financial Planner, discusses what will happen in the new Congress. 9:35 - Poland Missile/ABC News On Tuesday, a Russian-made missile killed two Polish persons on NATO soil. The Polish President called it an “unfortunate accident” and President Biden said it was unlikely the missile was fired from Russia. The effect of social determinants of health (SDoH) and systemic racism on obstetric health care outcomes is one of the most important challenges in reproductive health care. At the SMFM Annual Meeting in February 2022, the President's Workshop addressed Social Determinants of Health and Obstetric Outcomes. The goals of the workshop were to review the current evidence on the relationship between SDoH and obstetric outcomes, to discuss the epidemiological analysis of SDoH in obstetric settings, to review how SDoH manifest their effects physiologically, and to discuss interventions and strategies to mitigate the detrimental effects of adverse SDoH. In this podcast, workshop leaders Drs. William Grobman and Elizabeth Howell review key points from this SMFM event. This podcast is the second in a series developed by the SMFM Research Committee about the role of research in achieving health equity.

Millions of people are consuming podcasts, tv shows, and movies about the psychopathic killer. What does it mean? What is a psychopath exactly, and are they always malicious killers? You might be shocked to find what our specialists have to say about that question. This week, we have two guests: Dr. Sheldon Itzkowitz and Dr. Elizabeth Howell. They have published a fascinating--and, at times, horrifying--book on psychopaths and why it is so important for specialists to take the threat of psychopathy seriously. We talk about why we are so interested today in psychopathic killers and why we are throwing watch parties for True Crime podcasts. I learn a valuable lesson about language, and I tell them about a terrible video involving a man on the subway in NYC that came across my YouTube feed. This leads us into a conversation about whether or not we have become a herd of prey animals who are only happy when we know we are not the ones being hunted. While COVID-19 continues to dominate news headlines, another crisis lurks unabated and largely unaddressed: climbing maternal deaths. Among industrialized nations across the globe, the United States stands out as the most dangerous for pregnant women. Over 700 women die each year, 60% of them from preventable causes, during pregnancy or delivery. And Black women are 3 times more likely to die than White women. Perhaps surprisingly, it didn't used to be this way. For much of the 20th century, the US enjoyed an almost unmitigated decline in its maternal mortality rate, driven by scientific advances and improvements in general living conditions. But in the late 1980s, that progress began to stall. The maternal mortality rate in 1987 was 7.2 deaths per 100,000 births; by 2017, that rate had more than doubled. Today, the US is the only country in the developed world to see its maternal mortality rate go up; American mothers are 50 percent more likely to die in childbirth than their own mothers were. And it has the highest maternal mortality rate of any wealthy nation in the world. What's provoked such a dramatic rise in America's maternal mortality rates — just as the rest of the developed world has pushed its' down? Why are women of color disproportionately vulnerable? And what can we do, at the hospital level and the state and federal levels, to redress maternal health inequities? Few are better poised to shed light on these questions than Dr. Elizabeth Howell, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. Dr. Howell is a practicing ob/gyn and a nationally recognized leader in redressing maternal and child health disparities. And on today's episode, together, we begin to unpack America's maternal mortality crisis. For more, check out the below: - to learn about the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act - to watch Dr. Howell's TEDMED talk - to understand the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health's (AIM) safety bundles, and - to get a “primer” on maternal mortality in the U.S., from the Commonwealth Fund And to learn more about Civic Rx, go to civic-rx.org.
SUMMARY Canadian astronaut, author, and CEO Dave Williams in Leadership Moments from NASA: Achieving the Impossible examines the resilient culture and diverse leadership styles at NASA. In an organization where decisions can literally be matters of life and death, leadership styles matter! Using oral histories and interviews, Dave Williams and his co-author Elizabeth Howell help us understand many triumphs and tragedies spanning more than 50 years of space exploration. We learn how NASA was able to send a man to the moon in less than a decade of John Kennedy's announcement and how it continues to daringly push the limits of space exploration with confidence and courage. Despite all its setbacks, NASA has persisted as a place that continues to attract the best and brightest minds. KEY LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS Listen to your team; encourage people to speak up. Hire a diverse workforce using a competency-based model; empower bright, capable employees to use their expertise. Avoid the pitfall of “not saying we were wrong when we were wrong.” Organizational resilience and agility are critical and are often built through bouncing back from failure. QUOTES FROM WILLIAMS “The NASA culture defies the limits of traditional leadership by creating peak-performing teams where each individual strives relentlessly to build their competency, to build trust and to create strong links in a chain that binds the team together.” “Leadership is the art of influencing others.” “The perspectives on leadership at NASA…have been validated through the results that were achieved with their widespread utilization over the past 60 years of human spaceflight.” BUY Leadership Moments from NASA: Achieving the Impossible RECOMMENDATION Learn of Williams's personal experiences in space and NASA leadership in his memoir, Defying Limits: Lessons from the Edge of the Universe. Dave Williams: Leadership Moments from NASA Dave is an astronaut, aquanaut, jet pilot, emergency physician, scientist, CEO, and bestselling author. He is the former Director of Space & Life Sciences at NASA's Johnson Space Center and has flown in space twice on Space Shuttles Columbia and Endeavour. Dave holds the Canadian spacewalking record and was the first Canadian to live on the world's only undersea research habitat. He is the recipient of six honorary degrees, the Order of Canada, and the Order of Ontario. Along with Elizabeth Howell, he is the author of Leadership Moments from NASA: Achieving the Impossible*. In this conversation, Dave and I discuss some of the key events from NASA's history since its inception. We highlight three principles that Dave has uncovered in his research of interviews with NASA leaders over the years. Plus, a few practical tips that can help all of us lead teams more effectively. Key Points Introspection is a key and necessary practice for all leaders to hold — and often pays off in unexpected ways. Speaking up and listening up are critical values that helped support many of the NASA successes over the years. Cultural norms, such as senior leaders showing up regularly at all levels of the organization, can help ensure that communication is actually happening. NASA is an example of the movement away from a single, heroic leader and towards leadership, followership, and teamwork. Welcome to the Space Economy podcast and the final and 10th episode in our special series Doing Business in the Solar System hosted by Elizabeth Howell. While this may be the last podcast in the Doing Business in the Solar System, I'm happy to announce that Elizabeth will be back in the fall hosting a new podcast for SpaceQ, making it the third podcast we produce. More details on Elizabeth's podcast will be revealed in September. Today's podcast: It's notoriously hard to predict the space exploration economy. Twenty years ago, space tourism was a pipe dream and no company had yet sent a cargo ship to the International Space Station. These days, tourist flights and cargo ships are becoming more common. Are there any lessons we can draw to think ahead to say, 2050? Joining us is Michael Dodge. He earned multiple law degrees, and is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of North Dakota's Department of Space Studies.

This is the fifth of ten episodes in our special series Doing Business in the Solar System hosted by Elizabeth Howell. For many years, Canadian orbital dreams were restricted to launching things in other countries. But a Maritime Launch Services proposed launching facility in Nova Scotia secured nearly $11 million in Canadian investment dollars this spring. Its location takes advantage of the Earth's rotation to boost rockets into equatorial orbits. The facility is at an early stage, so early that Transport Canada says it isn't yet ready to comment. But we do have Kenneth Hodgkins, president of International Space Enterprise Consultants to talk about the subject. Mr. Hodgkins used to be the Director of the Office of Space and Advanced Technology at the US State Department, and was in Ottawa a few years back talking about Canada as a launching state.
In this episode of the Space Economy podcast we discuss asteroids as a resource with Dr. Dante Lauretta. This is the fourth of ten episodes in our special series Doing Business in the Solar System hosted by Elizabeth Howell. Asteroids and comets are abundant resources in our universe, but there are a lot of challenges in mining them. They’re scattered throughout the solar system. We don’t have a good survey yet of what each small body contains. And even if we do know what’s out there, how will we get the resources out? To learn more, we’ll speak with Dante Lauretta, leader of the sample return mission on NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft. Dr. Lauretta is also a professor of Planetary Science and Cosmochemistry at the University of Arizona’s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.
April 12 is a special day in the space business. It's the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's historic human spaceflight in 1961. In Episode 1, we'd like to take you through a historical journey telling you the differences between then, and now. Doing Business in the Solar System is a new 10 part series on the Space Economy podcast hosted by Elizabeth Howell, SpaceQ's Associate Editor. The series will air every other week in-between our regular episodes.

Their book documents our quest to find life on the Red Planet. Long-time viewers of the WSH will remember Elizabeth as one of our regular contributors from several years ago. Elizabeth Howell, PhD, is one of the few people who has lived on a simulated Mars base. An award-winning journalist, she regularly contributes to Space.com, Forbes, and SkyNews. She witnessed five human space launches — three from Florida and two from Kazakhstan. She also pretended to be a Red Planet astronaut in 2014, on Crew 133 of the Mars Society's Mars Desert Research Station in Utah. Elizabeth holds an undergraduate degree in journalism from Carleton University and two postgraduate degrees in space studies from the University of North Dakota. She lives with her husband in Ottawa, Canada. Nicholas Booth worked for Astronomy Now magazine, wrote about science for British newspapers, and was a technology editor on The Times (London). He is the author of true-life detective stories about spies and fraudsters, including Zigzag: The Incredible Wartime Exploits of Double Agent Eddie Chapman, published by Arcade, and The Thieves of Threadneedle Street. He lives in Cheshire, England, with his wife and their two cats. Elizabeth Howell is a space writer, science consultant and writing teacher based in Ottawa, Canada. She writes about space, science and astronauts, and has even BEEN an astronaut in a simulation on Mars!** Elizabeth writes hundreds a stories a year on the space business, from conferences, from live events and from my own home. You can see her work daily in places like Space.com, Forbes and SpaceQ. Elizabeth’s notable projects include: Elizabeth journeyed to Kazakhstan twice to report on two International Space Station launches: Expedition 56 and Expedition 58. She documented living on a “Mars” base for two weeks. And, Elizabeth attended three space shuttle launches (like this one), and talked to numerous astronauts about how to prepare for spaceflight. *She participated in the Mars Desert Research Station. Run by the Mars Society- researchers go there for 2 weeks with isolated conditions to work and learn and adapt to the environment. She rocked the research. Not so much the cooking… About writing her latest book: “Canada Arm and Collaboration” about the Canadian space program, and it will be published in October. It will be my 3rd book about science that will be out earlier this year… What really made the book easy to write form me- because book writing is terrible- it’s a lot of work and a lot of research- it was the result of 25 years of passion from the Apollo 13 movie just pouring out. what I really wanted to highlight was the behind the scenes work the astronauts do.” – Elizabeth Howell from Casual Space About the story behind the story: “The challenge is that there’s not very much coverage because there’s only about 6 of us (covering space) across the country (in Canada), so I’ve trying to attend as much as possible trying to tell the stories of both the astronauts from the launch, but they do all of these cool things on the ground that nobody talks about! They do underwater missions! They do geological field work! They do inspirational events for children! They have conversations with our Prime Minister! I like to be there and report when they are doing things in between (missions). About being a writer: “I was quite good at writing, it just seemed to come naturally to me. I had this ability to sit down and translate complex ideas into really cool stuff!” About inspiring her students: “There are many ways to do something. If you want to be an astronaut, I tell students that I’ve gone and simulated being an astronaut, I’ve gotten a degree where I was studying astronaut behavior. I’ve written and talked to so many astronauts over the years, so I basically have come as close as I can!” Where to find Elizabeth and her work: https://elizabethhowell.ca/ On Twitter: @Howellspace Books: https://elizabethhowell.ca/books/ The Science of Time Travel: The Secrets Behind Time Machines, Time Loops, Alternate Realities, and More! The rediscovery of trauma in the analytic field coupled with the the development of the concept of dissociation is the focus of a new book edited by two preeminent clinicians, Sheldon Itzkowitz and Elizabeth Howell— The Dissociative Mind in Psychoanalysis: Understanding and Working with Trauma (Routledge, 2016). In this interview, we discuss how this edited book was undertaken and current and historic views of the role of trauma. The authors contend that the concept of trauma itself has been dissociated in the profession, essentially since the disavowal by Freud of infant sexuality. It is only since the relational turn in psychoanalysis that trauma has once again moved to the forefront of clinical work. Here we discuss some of the historic implications as well as several of the twenty two authors' chapters in this well edited and concise book. On this episode, we invite back Elizabeth Howell as we talk about last week's decision to place shuttles in Cape Canaveral, Florida; Los Angeles, California; Chantilly, Virginia/Washington DC; and New York City, New York. We talk about a press conference with Assistant Administrator of the Office of Strategic Infrastructure, Houston being upset about not getting a shuttle, and out opinion on their locations. Thank you as well to James Cook, Scott Orshan, and @Aries419 for sending us your input. We then discuss the allocation of Endeavour's Canadarm to a lucky Canadian institution and predict where it might go. Lastly, we talk about a story which fooled Mark a few weeks ago, but makes for some entertainment this episode. Be sure to check out Elizabeth Howell at the Ottawa Business Journal by visiting http://obj.ca and at her own site, Pars3c, at http://pars3c.com Host this week: Sawyer Rosenstein. Panel Members: Gene Mikulka, Mark Ratterman, and special guest Elizabeth Howell Show Recorded - 4/17/2011
Elizabeth Howell from the Ottawa Business Journal and the award winning Pars3c Spaceflight blog joins Mark Ratterman and Gene Mikulka in this weeks Talking Space Installment. Don't worry, Sawyer Rosenstein and Gina Herlihy will be returning! Grist for this week's mill includes Coverage of STS 134 preparations at the Kennedy space Center along with two unfortunate events; the first fatal accident at Launch Complex 39A and the discovery of an illegal controlled substance just shy of the KSC secure area. The MESSENGER spacecraft became the first robotic emissary from Earth to go into orbit around Mercury. We discuss MESSGNGER's mission and the implications for planetary science going forward. An agreement was forged last week that commits the European Space Agency to supporting International Space Station operations through 2020. The panel discusses the implications for that agreement, what it means for the Station going forward and possible future international agreements between nations. A report by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) indicated that if Canada is not too careful, it could loose its edge in robotics. The Shuttle and Station Remote Manipulator System (RMS) and the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator or DEXTRE robots have made significant contributions to the success of the Shuttle and Space Station programs.
