What do parents communicate about failure?

More than one in 10 children ‘almost always' or ‘often' fear failure. But where do they learn this from? This fear can often pass from parents to children. Parental communication about failures and setbacks plays a critical role in shaping a child's perception of mistakes. In her research Dr Elizabeth Peterson found that: Clear action plans without discussion of collaborative resources increased children's fear of making mistakes.  When mothers acknowledged their child's emotions and discussed collaborative problem-solving, there was a notable decrease in the child's fear of mistakes. Many mothers minimally acknowledged or dismissed their child's emotions (40%), rarely discussed action plans (55%), or collaborative resources (79%). Effective parental communication involving emotional acknowledgment and collaborative problem-solving can help reduce children's fear of making mistakes. In this interview we discuss the consequences of this research for the classroom and how we as teachers can have positive conversations with our students about failure. You can find Elizabeth's paper here: Peterson, E. R., Sharma, T., Bird, A., Henderson, A. M. E., Ramgopal, V., Reese, E., & Morton, S. M. B. (2024). Failure - a word that is taboo in education and yet is part and parcel of the learning experience. As teachers, dealing with errors in the classroom can fundamentally change so much of the learning experience. The beliefs teachers and students hold about failure and errors changes behaviour and can cause students to persist and grow or to avoid risk and challenge. This term Psychology in the Classroom will be exploring Failure with the help of researchers and the British Journal of Educational Psychology(BJEP). During his fellowship at Trinity in collaboration with Professor Ruth Barton, he is mapping Dublin's history of silent era cinemas. Bio I am a film historian with a background in filmmaking, specifically in the camera department on TV commercials and music videos (back when you were more likely to find them on MTV than YouTube). I'm a historian because I like old stuff, and digging around both online and in archives, to find out things about the past. Probably because of my own history as a cameraman, a lot of my work focuses on the intersection of what academics call "Industry Studies" and "Reception Studies," which is just a fancy way of saying that I am interested in the people that made or showed films and the various types of communities that ended up watching them. In the case of the Ed's Coed article, for instance, Elizabeth Peterson, the University's Cinema Studies Librarian and myself worked together to write a history of the making of Ed's Coed, a feature-length romantic comedy made by some sixty University Oregon students here on campus in the late 1920s.

She emphasizes the significance of SEL in helping students become more emotionally aware and socially competent, and offers strategies to help music teachers promote SEL concepts. These not only enhance students' musical abilities but also help develop empathy, communication, and emotional understanding among them, creating a safe and caring learning environment. See if your definition aligns with hers… Other topics we discussed included the need for teachers who are inspired, and the very real fact that inspiration is not a switch that can be flipped on, BUT it CAN be nurtured in ways that are truly meaningful for significant and enriching benefits in the classroom for students and for us, as well. We went on to learn about ways in which Elizabeth has explored ways to grow inspiration that are real, and fun, and truly rewarding on many levels using art, even tho she does not consider herself an artist in the common understanding of that word. SEL is a big buzz word in education. We've heard how powerful it is and how it needs to be implemented for our students, but what about the teachers? SEL, or social emotional learning, is a LIFE LONG process. It's where we gather this knowledge, skills, attitude that really support us in managing our emotions, navigating those social interactions, and really just regulation in general. It doesn't stop being important once we get to doing our adult life. I believe that SEL for teachers is one of these components that is missing in our current system because the power of SEL is in its ability to improve well-being and effectiveness, even for us as educators. When we have a SEL practice or reflection time, we can better handle these challenges and demands of teaching, where we are more satisfied with our jobs, but also impact us to the point where we have better classroom management and better student outcomes, which is just a ripple effect into our classroom, school, and community culture. That's why I am joined in this episode by Elizabeth Peterson of The Inspired Classroom to talk all things Teacher SEL (or SEAL as she likes to refer to it) and the power that it has on really overcoming, recovering from, and preventing burnout. Elizabeth Peterson loves helping caring, creative teachers bring the arts practically and meaningfully into their classrooms. An arts integration specialist with degrees in Arts, Leadership and Learning, she hosts theinspiredclassroom.com. Elizabeth is the creator of SEAL, Social-Emotional Artistic Learning: a unique and holistic method of integrating the arts with SEL. What if the truest thing about us is that we are loved beyond what we can imagine? In her work and in our time today, that is the reality Elizabeth Peterson invites us into. Elizabeth Peterson is a certified spiritual director and yoga instructor, with fifteen years of experience working in retreat ministry. Elizabeth seeks to create safe and sacred spaces for individuals and groups to reflect on their own lives, become more aware of God's presence, and live from their truest identity as Beloved. In today's conversation, Elizabeth explains how engaging God through yoga helped get her through a very difficult season, why she engages spiritual direction and yoga in her work and how they complement each other, and she highlights the importance of connecting with our bodies in our spirituality and overall wellbeing. My hope is that this conversation and Elizabeth's insights might open us all up more fully to endless love, the foundation on which our soul stands.

Welcome back to the Not So Wimpy Teacher podcast! In this episode, I'm chatting with long-time teacher and author, Elizabeth Peterson, about how valuable the Arts are to students and how to integrate them into your classroom in simple ways. In her 20 years of teaching, Elizabeth has been a huge proponent of using the Arts to help students with social and emotional learning.  Episode 69 Takeaways: + You don't have to be a musician or an artist to integrate the arts into your classroom in a helpful way + Teaching kids active listening is all about being active with your ears and brain, not just active with your body + Have "Listen Alouds" where you play a piece of music during snack time and let your students identify sounds, emotions, themes, etc. + Take "Brain Breaks" with your class and have them stand up, stretch or even dance to get their whole body moving + Try "Friendly Friday" and let your students use their creativity to make an encouraging card or note for another classmate + Consistency with these small additions is key The good news is you can even implement these ideas in a virtual classroom! Do your movement break on a zoom call by sharing your screen with the class and playing a Go Noodle or YouTube video for them to dance to. Do your listen aloud in your virtual classroom. Have kids write encouragements to each other on a google comment thread. The more your students see YOU expressing creativity with confidence, the more they will feel comfortable themselves. Integrating the Arts into your classroom can have a powerful effect on your students, helping them process and express their emotions in a productive way. Aas we continue to evolve in the Golden Era, there's no denying that our bodies are experiencing a journey unlike ever before. Our nervous systems, adrenals, and hormones are navigating through the changes and now, more than ever, is it important for us to take responsibility for our lives as we go forth and increase our hue-man potential. We are inherently intuitive human beings. We know what we need and what we are ready to release. Traverse the pitfalls of life with two would-be, can’t-be, won’t be lovers in "To Protect the Innocent." *** Elizabeth Peterson is an educator, mathematician, and playwright who can be found between New England, Scotland, and Canada. She likes logic and words, and her favorite words are syzygy, eleemosynary, and logodaedaly. You can read her theatre reviews and thoughts on the world at her website, https://mathematicalmedievalist.wordpress.com/. It was a real treat for us all to hear her dulcet voice in place of my usual droning.  Hopefully, we’ll hear even more from her soon, both as a voice actor and as an author.  *** Subscribe via iTunes.
