Maybe you've heard the following David Foster Wallace parable that goes like this:   There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How's the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What in the world is water?”   We can all identify with these fish because like them we are also swimming around in our own water.    That water is our narrative and it influences everything about who we are and what we do.    Do you know what narratives are running your life right now?    Are you ready to take responsibility for building a new one so you can create a better work and life future?        My guest in this episode is Guillaume Wiatr who is an expert on helping entrepreneurs and businesses build strategic narratives that align their teams and help them innovate.   But his work and model don't just apply to these groups.     There's something very powerful here for you that's going to help you change the water you're swimming in!   By the end of this episode you'll learn:   The difference between story and narrative and how they influence your life How when narratives change, worlds can change  How to build a new strategic narrative to change your life and impact your world    About my guest: Guillaume is the author of Strategic Narrative: A Simple Method That Business Leaders Can Use to Make Everyone Understand Their Business, Get Behind it and Believe In It.  His company, MetaHelm, guides CEOs, founders, and business owners to align teams and accelerate innovation adoption.  A former big-firm strategy consultant, Guillaume has founded four ventures.    He is sought after by senior executives of companies like Alaska Airlines, the Gates Foundation, Generations For Peace, AIG, L'Oréal, Spencer Stuart, GAP, Google, Microsoft, and the US and French governments.   After helping to save a 20M euros venture during the dot-com boom, Guillaume went on a mission to turn every company into a source of inspiration that few can resist.   Guillaume teaches and mentors entrepreneurs at startup incubators, EMLyon international business school, and the University of Washington Master of Science in Entrepreneurship, ranked #3 in the US.   Contact Guillaume:    Website  LinkedIn  Twitter  Youtube  About: The Reframe to Create podcast is hosted by Joy Spencer, an Executive Leadership and Storytelling Coach, Speaker, and Organizational Development Consultant working with professionals and leaders at all levels within organizations.  Joy leverages over 17 years of experience she gained while working to champion change in social justice movements, including those related to global access to essential medicines and consumer advocacy for online privacy.  This work required a dogged commitment to not merely challenging the status quo, but to reimagining and working towards creating an ideal future.  It is this commitment to creating that has shaped Joy's coaching philosophy and approach today. We can't resist definitions here on the On Brand podcast. As Guillaume was quick to note, businesses have many different stories. “Narratives are systems of stories that you intentionally design to bring customers on your journey.” “Strategic narrative is an act of leadership.” Of course, this work should involve the usual suspects from branding and marketing but for your narrative to shape your organization's culture the CEO has to be “holding the pencil” as you facilitate these important conversations. Guillaume reinforced this with a story from his work with Horizon Airlines. “Leadership is not a title,” notes Guillaume. “It's who shows up to participate in a conversation that has an impact on the brand.” What brand has made Guillaume smile recently? In keeping with the idea of bringing about transformation, Guillaume cited the work of Girl's Garage. Il sera renouvelé l'an prochain. Nul doute que l'implantation de l'Ecole de Management dans le quartier des Girondins à l'horizon 2024 rapprochera un peu plus les étudiants des séniors. L'intergénération n'en est qu'à ses prémices...

He is also a lecturer on sales management and entrepreneurship at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai as well as Emlyon business school in Écully, France.Infinity Growth aims to bridge the Western and Chinese mindsets toward entrepreneurship to ensure that they maximize their clients' sales capabilities. Their key indicator of success is in the fact that they primarily attract their clients via word-of-mouth.Because “it's so easy to lose your reputation in China”, Infinity Growth looks at their increasing clientele as a sign that their sales training approach is resonating with and leading to great results among the local entrepreneurs and business professionals they work with.Yoann shares what distinguishes sales in China compared to America and Western Europe, including differences in buyer behavior, the role of public speaking in the business world, and how eCommerce and social media are used differently in the East and the West. Key Quotes:“If there's one thing I came to understand in China, it's to always under-promise and over-deliver. [...] It's so easy to lose your reputation in China, it's insane.” “If I take the angle of B2B sales, I think the main difference [between how sales are done in the West versus in the East] is around trust. In Europe, and even in the U.S., first, you make business, then you become friends. [...] In China, first you become friends, then you make business.”

Earned: Strategies and Success Stories From the Best in Beauty + Fashion

In Episode 11 of Earned, Conor chats with David Benayoun and Adam Bohbot, co-founders of fast-growing, carbon neutral jewelry brand Ana Luisa. In the episode, Adam and David reveal their fateful meeting sharing a cab to a nightclub in Shanghai while both attending business school at EMLYON. After pursuing different career paths post-graduation (Adam entered the VC  world before joining an influencer marketing software company, while David dove into e-commerce and jewelry design and manufacturing), we learn why the two decided to leverage their complementary skill sets and create Ana Luisa in 2018. Adam and David discuss the challenges of entering a market they did not grow up in, and share their experience taking outside investments. They then give insight into Ana Luisa's unique weekly product drop strategy, and divulge their product co-creation process with influencers—a pillar of the brand's DNA. We learn more about how the brand's YouTube strategy powered hyper growth, the inventory planning challenges that resulted, and why Adam and David prioritize influencer partners' “value fit” over follower count.
