Listen to this podcast episode with Guillaume Wiatr, originally from France, now based in Seattle. I'm flying high right now because I was pretty vulnerable in this episode. We used me as an example. Guillaume is a creator of Strategic Narrative, the business strategy consulting and coaching methodology for entrepreneurial leaders and professional service firms. He looks young, but for like 30 years he's worked with some big, big consulting firms. He's founded several companies. He's worked with organizations like Microsoft and the Gates Foundation, AIG. He walked me through some of his methodologies as I'm exploring this inflection point that I'm in my career and my business. We took a gamble by using me as the example and I have a feeling it's going to resonate with you the listener. We jump right into what we mean by Strategic Narrative, his trademark methodology. If you're wondering where you're at in positioning your company or your team's vision and your strategy, this was super helpful for me. This is free advice, some coaching, and a bit of consulting. Enjoy. Guillaume explained strategic narrative is a system of interconnected stories that shape one's mindset, language, and actions to achieve goals more efficiently. Guillaume emphasized building an authentic narrative from the inside-out to avoid distractions, focus on core values, and efficiently reach one's desired future through small consistent actions. Nate aims to scale their impact by growing a team of coaches to serve more leaders, as they successfully did in their hockey development business, moving from sole proprietor to leader. Guillaume stressed developing one's authentic expertise through publishing seeds of ideas continuously to clarify perspective for differentiated impact, like coaching from experience. Guillaume suggested prototyping ideas quickly through publishing to build confidence in one's message and overcome doubts, focusing outward on small actions over big plans. Guillaume recommended cultivating ideas through presence like walks, then publishing seeds immediately online to develop expertise iteratively through feedback in a low-risk yet impactful way. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leading-with-curiosity/message

Maybe you've heard the following David Foster Wallace parable that goes like this: There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How's the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What in the world is water?” We can all identify with these fish because like them we are also swimming around in our own water. That water is our narrative and it influences everything about who we are and what we do. Do you know what narratives are running your life right now? Are you ready to take responsibility for building a new one so you can create a better work and life future? My guest in this episode is Guillaume Wiatr who is an expert on helping entrepreneurs and businesses build strategic narratives that align their teams and help them innovate. But his work and model don't just apply to these groups. There's something very powerful here for you that's going to help you change the water you're swimming in! By the end of this episode you'll learn: The difference between story and narrative and how they influence your life How when narratives change, worlds can change How to build a new strategic narrative to change your life and impact your world About my guest: Guillaume is the author of Strategic Narrative: A Simple Method That Business Leaders Can Use to Make Everyone Understand Their Business, Get Behind it and Believe In It. What is a narrative, exactly? It's more than a story.Stories often have a beginning, a middle, and an end, making them self-contained. Contrarily, narratives are open-ended. The outcome depends on the decisions and deeds of people involved, it has the potential to be a forceful call to action.Guillaume Wiatr, the Principal and Founder of MetaHelm, a company that guides CEOs, founders, and business owners to align teams and accelerate innovation adoption, joins us in this week's episode. His insight that stories engage but narratives mobilize is the groundbreaking subject of his book, Strategic Narrative. We will learn about this framework leveraged by senior executives of companies such as Google, Microsoft, the US, and French Government.Guillaume explains as Mick deeply listens that we'd want a strategic narrative, succinct but thorough, precise but with space for development, one that conveys the strategy, represents the culture, and defines the company's vision. It should describe your brand as a whole rather than a catchphrase or a positioning statement. It should include your past, present, and future locations. What you value in relationships and how you think value is created. It requires a change in perspective that is driven by the leadership team.Download this episode to learn about the actions you can take to transform relationships with your executives, your team, your partners and your customers.Guillaume Wiatr Social MediaWebsite : https://www.metahelm.com/LinkedIn : https://www.linkedin.com/in/guillaumewiatr/YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIxoyfQejqR1lQzY5i61A1QTwitter: twitter.com/GuillaumeWiatrDownload eBook for free: https://www.metahelm.com/getstrategicnarrativebook/Join the Strategic Narrative Essentials For Entrepreneurs: how to mobilize the right talent, customers, and investors with your leadership. His work teaches leaders how to build a strategic narrative. We discussed all of this and more this week on the On Brand podcast. Episode Highlights Storytelling vs. Strategic Narrative. We can't resist definitions here on the On Brand podcast. As Guillaume was quick to note, businesses have many different stories. “Narratives are systems of stories that you intentionally design to bring customers on your journey.” “Strategic narrative is an act of leadership.” Of course, this work should involve the usual suspects from branding and marketing but for your narrative to shape your organization's culture the CEO has to be “holding the pencil” as you facilitate these important conversations. Guillaume reinforced this with a story from his work with Horizon Airlines. “Leadership is not a title,” notes Guillaume. “It's who shows up to participate in a conversation that has an impact on the brand.” What brand has made Guillaume smile recently? In keeping with the idea of bringing about transformation, Guillaume cited the work of Girl's Garage. To learn more, check out the Metahelm website and connect with Guillaume on LinkedIn and Twitter. In this episode, Jordan and Guillaume discuss: Narrative as an interpretation of reality The sum of invention and adoption Internal and external narrative Dimensions of a narrative Key Takeaways A strategic narrative must have a viewpoint or an interpretation of reality. A company stands out more when they have a distinct perspective or an opinion. Innovation is the sum of invention and adoption. It needs a story that will take people from one narrative to the next. The internal narrative is your belief system, values, and the way you operate while external is how you are perceived and what impact you create. Both are essential in creating a cohesive strategic narrative. Establish your origin story and opportunity story. Align people to your perspective - your values and culture, and remember to put less focus on what the product does and more on why people should get it. “A story is something that happened in the past - it has a beginning, a middle and an end. A narrative is more future-oriented. It has a beginning, a middle, but no end…” — Guillaume Waitr Get Guillaumi's Free E-Book: www.strategicnarrative.com Get Guillaumi's Daily E-Mails: https://www.metahelm.com/the-next-narrative/ The Strategic Narrative Workshop - https://www.metahelm.com/workshop/ Get the complimentary guide: How To Select An Executive Coach at www.selectcoach.workplacewarrior.com Get the Am I Abrasive Self Test at abrasive.workplacewarrior.com Connect with Guillaume Wiatr: Website: https://www.metahelm.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/guillaumewiatr/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GuillaumeWiatr Connect with Jordan: Website: www.workplacewarriorinc.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/
Storytelling has been the topic du jour in marketing over the past couple of years. We all know we should use stories more in business, but what does that actually mean from a practical standpoint? In this episode, Guillaume Wiatr and Alastair McDermott discuss a practical approach to using stories in business, the seven elements of a strategic narrative, and how to develop your origin story. They also discuss the four different strategic narratives that can be used in your business, as well as further resources that can help you implement stories in a practical way. “Most people think storytelling & narratives are about communication and marketing - and that's true. But it's also a very narrow understanding: a narrative runs your whole business. If you're a solo entrepreneur, the narrative that you tell yourself about why you're doing this job is extremely important.” -- Guillaume Wiatr “The CEOs & founders are faced with the challenge of changing people's buying behavior. You can't just do that by just telling a bunch of stories. You have to frame your buyer's reality into a new narrative.” -- Guillaume Wiatr
"Innovation only happens if we know how to create new narratives. "People will pay for a story, but they will die for a narrative". - Guillaume Wiatr Join us on todays episode to explore Guillaumes mission to turn every organization, team, and personal story into a movement that few can resist. Find out, amongst many things What is the difference between story and narrative? Why is the company narrative not just a sales and marketing thing? Why is the company narrative the job of the CEO?
