He's one of those theoretical physicist turned neuroscientist, and he has studied a wide range of topics over his career. Most recently, he has become interested in what he calls the "edges of consciousness", which encompasses the many trying to explain what may be happening when we have experiences outside our normal everyday experiences. For example, when we are under the influence of hallucinogens, when have near-death experiences (as Alex has), paranormal experiences, and so on. So we discuss what led up to his interests in these edges of consciousness, how he now thinks about consciousness and doing science in general, how important it is to make room for all possible explanations of phenomena, and to leave our metaphysics open all the while. I recently saw the documentary, Aware: Glimpses of Consciousness, and I felt that it would be a perfect conversation for the show because of how it digs into multiple layers of consciousness and asks a lot of big questions and answers, a couple of questions. But you're also left with questions at the end of films, which is always a good sign to keep the conversation going.Frauke Sandig and Eric Black have done a number of other projects together on a common theme of social, environmental, and psychological consciousness. Set to be theatrically released in the US and Germany in September 2021, Aware confronts the "Big Questions", cutting a window into a realm previously held tight by philosophy and religion: AWARE follows six brilliant researchers, approaching the greatest of all mysteries from radically different perspectives, from within and without: through high-tech brain research and Eastern meditation, by scientifically exploring inner space through psychedelic substances and by investigating the consciousness of plants. Scientists are arriving at new insights - some have been integral to Indigenous knowledge for millennia.AWARE opens as a science film but emerges well beyond the explicable, ultimately leading one on a voyage upon the ocean of consciousness, a contemplative, sensual, cinematographic meditation. The networks of consciousness are reflected in 'grand' imagery revealing the vast interconnectedness of Nature - from the smallest organisms to the world of plants and animals and on to the cosmos. We explore the depths and crevasses of the topic of consciousness and how we are impacted by it inwardly and outwardly through meditating, psychedelic research, etc.The duo has done exceptional work highlighting stories or topics that challenge our subjective experience and implore the viewers to look harder, think deeper, and act better. It was a pleasure speaking with Frauke and Eric. Enjoy!

This is one in a periodic series of episodes with Alex Gomez-Marin, exploring how the arts and humanities can impact (neuro)science. Artistic creations, like cinema, have the ability to momentarily lower our ever-critical scientific mindset and allow us to imagine alternate possibilities and experience emotions outside our normal scientific routines. Might this feature of art potentially change our scientific attitudes and perspectives? Frauke Sandig and Eric Black recently made the documentary film AWARE: Glimpses of Consciousness, which profiles six researchers studying consciousness from different perspectives. The film is filled with rich visual imagery and conveys a sense of wonder and awe in trying to understand subjective experience, while diving deep into the reflections of the scientists and thinkers approaching the topic from their various perspectives. In the mind expanding documentary AWARE: Glimpses of Consciousness a number of intriguing questions are What is consciousness? Is it in all living beings? What happens when we die? Why do we seem to be hardwired for mystical experience? In these times of existential crisis, there has been an explosion of research into consciousness. After four centuries of silence, scientists are confronting the “Big Questions”, cutting a window into a realm previously held tight by philosophy and religion: AWARE follows six brilliant researchers, approaching the greatest of all mysteries from radically different perspectives, from within and without: through high-tech brain research and Eastern meditation, by scientifically exploring inner space through psychedelic substances and by investigating the consciousness of plants. Scientists are arriving at new insights – some of which have been integral to Indigenous knowledge for millenia. AWARE opens as a science film but emerges well beyond the explicable, ultimately leading one on a voyage upon the ocean of consciousness, a contemplative, sensual, cinematographic meditation. The networks of consciousness are reflected in 'grand' imagery revealing the vast interconnectedness of Nature - from the smallest organisms, to the world of plants and animals and on to the cosmos. AWARE invites one to experience the awe and mystery of life as the researchers do, to dive in with them, returning to see the world anew, to review long-held beliefs and assumptions and initiate one's own oceanic journey. Ultimately, to be aware one is aware. Joining us to talk about this beautiful film are the co-directors and co-writers of AWARE: Glimpses of Consciousness Frauke Sandig and Eric Black. Since we last spoke, we've had a lot happen at our beloved Aston Villa. The club lost. The club were relegated. Joleon Lescott said stupid things. Board members resigned. Stan Collymore threw fits. Fans threw fits. Takeover talk re-emerged. And everything looks to be suitably insane. So why is it that everything feels so... boring right now? Jack and Robert dive into the week and focus on the big issues. With relegation guaranteed and no actual concrete takeover news, it's tough to really care about the club. Eric Black is still in charge and the same useless players are still around. Wheeee. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
