A special in-person episode, recorded at the National Park Friends Alliance Fall Meeting, featuring Yosemite Conservancy President & CEO Frank Dean and Yosemite National Park Superintendent Cicely Muldoon. Frank and Cicely provide a unique moment for Who Runs This Park by showcasing the incredible partnership between Yosemite and the Yosemite Conservancy, offering insights into the vital relationships between national parks and their friends groups. This fun and laughter-filled conversation takes you behind the scenes of some fascinating stories, including the origins of the Starbucks in Yosemite Valley. We discuss the evolving and improving relationship between Yosemite and climbers (timely, as it's Rocktober!), the challenges and rewards of managing a park with over 800 miles of trails—including the iconic John Muir Trail (JMT) and Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)—and the significance of Yosemite as the birthplace of the conservation movement, where "it all began" for the National Park Service. We also explore the power of leading with empathy and humor, reflect on Cicely's 40 years of service with the Park Service, and reminisce about Frank and Cicely's friendship, which began nearly 35 years ago during the 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in Alaska. You can follow Who Runs This Park on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube, email us at info@whorunsthispark.com, or check us out online at whorunsthispark.com.Sign up for the Who Runs This Park newsletter at linktr.ee/whorunsthispark.Who Runs This Park is hosted and produced by Maddie Pellman, with music by Danielle Bees.

Hello friends! Welcome to The Good, The Bad and The Pure Evil. On this episode I look at the Exxon Valdez Oil spill of 89. Happening March 23 1989, the Exxon Valdez was heading for Long Beach with 53 million gallons on oil onboard. From poor decisions and poor equipment the ship hit the Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, tearing open 8 hulls and pouring 11 million gallons of oil into the waters. Clean up began immediately but failed, Exxon would blame the captain, the state of Alaska even the Coast Guard. The fact remains all involved including Exxon were not prepared to handle a spill of this size, because of this long term and short term effects hamper the area, marine life and the residents and clean up crew.

Randy Rogers is the president of Telefilm, Inc., a Los Angeles based production company. His career spans four decades of working in the newspaper, television and motion picture business. During that time, he has covered every type of major news event from George McGovern's 1972 election bid to the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in 1989. His company, Telefilm, has handled the promotion of the world's biggest motion pictures including The Matrix, Harry Potter, Pearl Harbor, Batman, Superman, Shrek, Toy Story, Iron Man and Indiana Jones. Growing up in the western Pennsylvania steel town of Johnstown, Randy asked for his first camera from a Green Stamps catalog on his 10th birthday. That camera started him on a life long path as a photographer. His first part time job in 1969, as an usher at the State Theatre, subtly foretold where that path would be heading. A newly-formed global network of cruise port residents, civil society organizations, and labor & crime victim advocates came together during the COVID 19 pandemic to demand “no return to business-as-usual” for cruising. What do They do? The Global Cruise Activist Network provides a forum for building relationships and alliances, and taking collective action. Our focus is on organizing, sharing information, skills and resources, and building a “big tent” coalition. Who They Are For decades, the cruise industry's business model has depended on burning huge volumes of highly polluting fuel, dumping in the ocean, underpaying its lowest-paid workers, and avoiding labor, tax, environmental and criminal laws. Cruise ships continue to put the social, cultural, economic, public health, and environmental health of port communities at risk. Cruise companies have failed to protect the health and safety of passengers and workers, and have contributed to climate change. In response, advocates seeking justice both onboard and ashore have come together to form The Global Cruise Activist Network. As a global network, we are aligned around the values of health, safety, security, conservation, and equity. We want clean air, clean water, and healthy, resilient communities. We want fair and just wages and working conditions for workers. We want to protect wildlife and the climate. Despite our common cause and our commitment to think globally and act locally, we are also diverse. Some are abolitionists, advocating degrowth and an end to the cruise industry. Some work to restrict cruise ships' size and frequency. Others call for reform - for the cruise industry to act more responsibly. We support individuals' and communities' right to self-determination: to ban cruise ships entirely, restrict or limit them, or push for their reform. All are welcome. Meet Karla Hart of Juneau Alaska started looking critically at the cruise industry when a job put her in close contact in 1984. She ran tourism businesses from 1987-1997, was a founding member of the Alaska Wilderness Recreation and Tourism Association after the 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill, and served alongside cruise executives as a Governor's Appointee to the Alaska Tourism Marketing Council in the mid-1990s. Her home is miles away from the cruise port in downtown Juneau, but it is under a shortcut flight route for helicopter tours to the Mendenhall Glacier. Relentless noise in August of 2019, coupled with explosive cruise growth, inspired her to start organizing an in-person global networking conference of cruise activists. Online searches quickly connected her with Ruth Starr in Maine, who was also interested in forming a broader cruise activist network. While the global pandemic inspired the two to change course from planning an in-person conference to coordinating online network — the Global Cruise Activist Network was born. David and Rachel discuss the background of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
Mike tells Sarah that America’s most devastating oil spill was not, in fact, a DUI. Digressions include “Titanic" (obviously), the Cuyahoga River, Jennifer Lopez and marshmallows. The Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 killed hundreds of thousands of seabirds and brought commercial fishing in some of Alaska’s most productive waters to a standstill. It’s often talked about as an unprecedented, unthinkable event, but it was, in fact thinkable, and people tried to prevent it.
Unlike in the lower 48 states, Alaska Natives were not corralled into circumscribed reservations, but rather became incorporated into the Native Claims Settlement Act, making them shareholders of their “corporation.” Dune Lankard describes his monumental achievement in preventing the proposed clear-cut of over 700,000 trees in the wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill by suing his people – the Eyak Corporation – for the right to vote for conservation over development. Lankard’s many conservation triumphs are driven by his innate care for all creation, inspired by his childhood memories of a subsistence way of life in an unparalleled paradise. She is also the founder of three nonprofit organizations that deal with lingering harm from man-made environmental disaster. http://www.rikiott.com/ Watch these youtube reports from James Fox independent film maker and reporter; http://www.youtube.com/user/jamescfox
Guest: Riki Ott, Marine Biologist/Author of Not One Drop: Betrayal and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. In 1989 the landscape and coastal communities of Alaska/Prince William Sound and beyond changed forever following the Exxon Valdex Oil Spill. What happened? How did this effect the communities along the coast? Why did the litigation process take 20 years and the compensation only pay 10 cents on the dollar for the losses?
Riki Ott is a marine pollution scientist, author and activisit. She speaks here about her recent book Not One Drop: Betrayal and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in 1989 in Prince William Sound, Alaska. In this interview, she goes beyond the damage caused by oil tanker spills and by the oil industry as a whole (through extraction and automobile exhaust) to look at the bigger picture: how corporations are able to amass money and power, which in turn are destroying democracy. Ott speaks about how the courts ordered the Exxon Corporation to pay economic compensation to the citizens affected by the spill – for example, the pink salmon and herring industries collapsed – but the emotional cost of the spill, the damage done to Native culture and the way of life in Cordova, were not considered a “real” loss.Ott began to realize that the issue was greater than an oil spill: the crux of the matter is that corporations are granted human rights which are allowed to trump private lives. Corporations became persons in the eyes of the law in 1886. These corporate persons have since then usurped many personal rights that the Founding Fathers only intended for real human beings. For example, corporate persons can use First Amendment protections to pour money into political campaigns. Ott has launched a campaign (see ultimatecivics.com) to support repeal of the 28th Amendment, which would strip corporations of their human rights and hold corporations accountable for the consequences of their actions.Ott also addresses the damage that oil does in terms of health and political instability. Current medical research links polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (the “backbone” of oil) to asthma and reduced lung capacity in children. Oil spill workers show similar symptoms. PAH’s are persistent and bioaccumulant. Ott believes that oil corporations have suppressed this information. Governments have not envisioned a future beyond oil, although oil is a toxic substance that causes damage every step of the way from extraction through combustion.Recorded February, 2009
Twenty years ago this month, nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled into Alaska's Prince William Sound after the oil tanker Exxon Valdez grounded on a reef. It was and still is the single largest spill to ever occur along the coastal U.S. Join us in this special podcast as we talk with Dr. Alan Mearns, senior staff scientist with NOAA's Office of Response and Restoration. Mearns was involved in the initial spill response for the Exxon Valdez accident, and spent years leading a project that continues to monitor the long-term impact of the huge oil spill.
Aired 07/15/08 In late summer1989 I spent a week living among and interviewing the fishermen and citizens of Cordova, Alaska. Once they'd realized that federal, state and corporate entities were moving too slowly to save their fisheries, many of them had moved heroically to import and place booms around the most vulnerable areas. Fishing was destroyed for that year so many of them were employed by Exxon in that summer's massive cleanup efforts. Though the luckiest among them earned the newly coined designation - “spillionaires,” the natural, social, and economic fabric of Cordova and Prince William Sound have never been the same. Last month, 19 years after the spill -- and two days after climate change scientist James Hansen told Congress that ExxonMobil and other fossil fuel CEOs "should be tried for high crimes against humanity and nature" for their role in delaying the global response to climate change -- the Supreme Court reduced a $2.5 billion punitive judgment against Exxon for the Valdez disaster to $500 million. Exxon made more than $40 billion in profits last year. RIKI OTT and I took a look at the long sad aftermath of the oil spill -- with an eye toward the broader context of corporate power versus nature and humanity. OTT believes this is the civil rights movement of our day.
