Should we be thinking about social media as risky behavior, equal to drinking alcohol, doing drugs, unprotected sex and operating heavy machinery? Sciencedirect.com defines risky behavior as: “Risk taking is any consciously, or non-consciously controlled behavior with a perceived uncertainty about its outcome, and/or about its possible benefits or costs for the physical, economic or psycho-social well-being of oneself or others.” In other words, it's behavior that can cause harm to yourself and others. My guest Bailey Parnell is an expert in keeping our kids and us safe on social media and brings a wealth of research and information to the topic. Our kids are especially vulnerable on social media for many reasons. So where do we start? First, we need to take a look at ourselves and how we consume social media. Do we use it to numb ourselves, to compare, or is it a fun pastime? Our kids are watching us so let's make sure we take a moment to notice how, when and where we interact with it, and lead by example. It's important that from the moment our kids have access to a device, we start talking about the risks to their safety and others. As our kids get older and want to be connected on social platforms, it's important to have boundaries and talk to them about what drives social media and how powerful and damaging social currency can be. Bailey says the research shows that how we respond to what we see on social media is dependent on how good we are already feeling about ourselves. So if we are feeling low, it can make you feel lower and if you feel good, you aren't as affected. This means we need to invest in our kids' sense of self (and our own) outside of the online world. In this episode, Bailey and I talk about: How teens are wired for comparison and risk-taking behavior How girls are more frequently targeted for harassment How to talk to your kids using a harm reduction approach App suggestions for parents to help you navigate the social media world. Bailey has generously given three helpful resources to the Parent Toolbox: 1. Having "The Talk" With Your Kids... About Social Media (12 Examples and strategies) 2. 12 Strategies to Improve Social Media Use 3. Social Media Addiction Assessment Download these resources from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.com About Bailey Parnell Bailey Parnell is the Founder & CEO of SkillsCamp, a soft skills training company, and was named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. There are so many important conversations happening right now around the world when it comes to race and social equality. No matter who you are and what your background is there is more to learn. Scotty and I have been investing time into learning more about our white privilege and how we can anti-racist while being an ally for those around us. We are so thankful to have people like Dominique in our lives. Dom takes us through real world scenarios as a Black Influencer and highlights ways we can support the movement in a positive way. A public servant by day, my blog, www.styledomination.com, serves as a creative outlet highlighting my deep interest in fashion and beauty with a focus on humour. After all, you need a sense of humour to spend $2000 on a handbag. Style Domination is simply a play on my name. My blog highlights how I “Dom-ify” my clothing, so really, it's more of a focus on “Style Domification” of current trends and classic pieces alike. Promise – I don't pretend to dominate anything! In the early part of 2015, my husband suggested I start a blog featuring all of the fun things I get up to. What started as a medium to share my crazy adventures and love of style soon turned into a go-to destination for beauty advice and reviews, fashion, and lifestyle, and soon expanded to YouTube. Since launching my blog, I have been featured in Flare Magazine, the Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Life Magazine, Krowd Magazine, among others. I have also worked with many notable brands such as Ford Canada, Lincoln Motors of Canada, ALEX & ANI, Westin Hotels, Charlotte Tilbury, L'Oréal, Yves Saint Laurent Beauty, Givenchy Beauty and Giorgio Armani Beauty. In addition to blogging, I now speak to groups in the Ottawa area about how to boost confidence and self-esteem through style, along with giving back to the community through charitable work. In 2017, I was named a Person 2 Know by the United Way Ottawa, and was an Ambassador for The Ottawa Hospital. This week's conversation is between Emily Ramshaw and I...(oh and a second guest). When first I set out to interview Emily, I had a pretty decent sense of what we would be chatting about: Like how she landed her first real job as the Assistant Fashion News Editor for Flare Magazine at the age of 22, her glamorous life as the Senior Editor for the Convetour in New York, what brought her back to Toronto, and what compelled her to be working as the Content Lead for Bumble Canada. We chatted about all that. But what also ended up unfolding was an organic conversation about her experience going to an all-girl high school, the transition from working for a big publication to a fashion start-up, the double-edged sword of being someone always looking forward, and so much more.Emily is definitely not one of the people addicted to comfort. Quite the opposite actually. Although she probably thinks luck has a lot to do with her success, I believe her courage to always challenge herself and her strength to embrace the unknown have contributed to where she is today. That Kid in Fourth Grade Who Really Liked the Denver Broncos by Chris Zabriskie is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Source: http://chriszabriskie.com/uvp/Artist: http://chriszabriskie.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
