Welcome back to another episode of The TechTual Talk. This episode will focus on the truth about IT helpdesk and its correlation with cybersecurity. Nigel joins the show today to talk about his early career, transitioning from helpdesk to Cyber Threat Intelligence/vulnerability management in 10 months, A Day in the Life of a cyber threat intelligence analyst, salary expectations and much more.If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a comment below. #helpdesk #threatintelligence #vulnerabilitymanagement Until 2021 Nigel worked as an IT consultant, and gained skills in risk management/mitigation strategies and network administration. It's through these experiences he learned about cybersecurity, and recognized that this was a career path he was passionate about. Though he's worked hard to develop his cybersecurity skills, Nigel recognize that his time spent as an IT consultant will always provide him with a beneficial perspective in the Cybersecurity world. He intends to carry this with him and share this combination of technical skills into my next role. During Nigel's time at Fullstack Academy's Cybersecurity bootcamp, he gained experience as a Cybersecurity Analyst and was successful in developing strong networking skills and an understanding of the OSI model, network protocols, and ports. Learning the fundamentals of general security practices, NIST standards, and information security management has provided him with the foundation of technical skills he's certain will aid him in this role. After successfully completing his courses with Fullstack Academy' he continued his studies through a variety of online simulations. He earned the security plus and one month later acquired his first security position as a security analyst II in threat intelligence and vulnerability management.Nigel socials:Twitter- CyberCloutTikTok- CybercloutttYouTube- CyberCloutInstagram- Cyberclout_0:00 Intro23:30 How to determine your Cybersecurity path33:00 What is Cyber Threat Intelligence and Vulnerability Management51:44 Nigel Tripled his salary by leaving helpdesk and getting into CybersecurityCheck out my Advance your cybersecurity course on linkedin learning here: https://linkedin-learning.pxf.io/mgP3x1Get your coaching, new resume, and more here: https://techualconsulting.com/offeringsGrab My ebook for Free using code "help" at checkout: https://techualconsulting.com/digitalproductsNeed a Consultation or Resume Click here: calendly.com/techtuaulconsultingCheck out The TechTual Talk Podcast: https://thetechtualtalk.comFollow me on social media: https://techtualconsulting.start.page/Check out my desk setup here: https://techualconsulting.com/desksetup Check out my latest cybersecurity resume mistake video here:https://youtu.be/6B2B__-FbwEWatch these playlist:Cybersecurity Jobsearch Tips: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLx70gNuaEAlAEhuWvqnd9I1P3JU7aEIme TechTual Chatter Reactions: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLx70gNuaEAlBe-NXtW0l6KYUYUyx9QON3Support the showIf you enjoyed the show don't forget to leave us a 5 star review, to help with the algorithm :)Contact me: henridavis@thetechtualtalk.comSocial Media: https://techtualconsulting.start.page
Amazon Web Services at its annual re:Invent conference, which began yesterday, said it will be water positive by 2030, returning more water to communities than it uses in its direct operations, according to a press release. Table Space, a co-working space provider, has raised $300 million in fresh funding, Economic Times reports. And the high-end versions of next year's iPhones may not have physical buttons and use haptic tech, according to some of the latest rumours. Notes: Amazon Web Services at its annual re:Invent conference, which began yesterday, said it will be water positive by 2030, returning more water to communities than it uses in its direct operations, according to a press release. In India, AWS supports water replenishment projects with the non-profit organisation WaterAid that include rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and piped water installations in communities in Andhra Pradesh and Hyderabad, Telangana. In more AWS news, Tata Consultancy Services has opened a quantum computing lab on AWS to help customers explore, develop, and test business solutions and accelerate the adoption of quantum computing, considered one of the most promising technologies of the decade, the Indian IT services company said in a press release. The new TCS Quantum Computing Lab on AWS will offer a virtual research and development environment using Amazon Braket, a fully managed quantum computing service from AWS. On the ecommerce front, Amazon is shutting down its wholesale distribution business in India, the latest in a series of closures as a tough 2023 is anticipated with a global economic slowdown. Amazon said Monday that it is discontinuing Amazon Distribution, its wholesale ecommerce website available in small neighbourhood stores in Bengaluru, Mysore and Hubli, TechCrunch reports. Amazon Distribution was designed to help kiranas, the neighbourhood stores in India, pharmacies and department stores secure inventory from the e-commerce giant, according to TechCrunch. Table Space, a co-working space provider, has secured nearly $300 million from private equity fund Hill House Capital to expand its operations across India, Economic Times reports. The deal was closed in October this year and the funding will be received in two tranches, according to the report. Simplilearn, an up-skilling edtech platform provider, has acquired US-based bootcamp education company Fullstack Academy, as it looks to expand into the US, Economic Times reports. Simplilearn acquired Fullstack from publicly traded US edtech company Zovio, which has over the past few months been taking steps to dissolve the company, according to ET. The latest rumours about Apple's next iPhones have the company ditching physical buttons in favour of haptic feedback. The iPhone 15 will also likely have USB-C charging ports. There could be a periscope zoom camera for at least one iPhone 15 model, Dynamic Island for all four 2023 iPhones, and a new 3nm chip for the Pro models, Phone Arena reports. And Tom's Guide, a popular tech news and analysis site, pointed out that the well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's prediction last month that Apple would abandon physical buttons for two high-end iPhones seems to have been validated by an investor note from analysts at investment bank Barclays. This week's episode is the first of a 2 part series of Technically Human. Over the next two episodes, I speak with six women/nonbinary/trans individuals about their experiences transitioning into the tech industry after leaving established careers. They share their stories about what led them to decide to leave their established careers and retrain as technologists through the Grace Hopper Coding Academy, a program specifically targeting women/nonbinary/trans individuals who want to learn how to code so that they can pursue careers in the tech industry. We discuss the challenges that women/nonbinary/trans individuals face when pursuing careers in tech. We talk about what tech represents for those who have been historically excluded from it, and their decision to launch their new collective, "Intercode," a platform that seeks to establish a community for Womyn+ in tech to share their stories and forge new connections. Serena Chang is a Fullstack software engineer and professional dancer in New York City looking to combine both these passions in her next career. Chang was dancing as one of the lead roles in the off-broadway performance, “Then She Fell” and prepared to go on an international tour prior to the performance shutdowns due to Covid. Looking for another creative and technical pathway, she became immersed in coding and the endless creative possibilities it offered to interface with humans. Kelsey Roy is a Software Engineer who is seeking to implement socially conscious practices in the tech sphere. She has held previous roles as a Data Analyst and Operations Manager and as a Project Management Consultant. Kelsey is devoted to a career working for mission-driven organizations with diverse and collaborative environments that make a positive difference in the world. Related to her passion for supporting DEI efforts in tech, she is also interested in the ethics surrounding AI, machine learning, and computing in general. Jazma Foskin is a Fullstack Software Engineer who recently graduated from the Grace Hopper Program at Fullstack Academy. She is an Army Veteran who is passionate about learning, traveling, and growing. Combining technology and creativity has allowed her to work on passion projects that are aiming to push the Black and LGBTQIA+ community forward. As a Black woman, Jazma is continuing to be a representation so that others may see themselves in her and understand they too no matter their starting point can accomplish their goals. Diana Viglucci (they/them) is a full stack developer, community-builder, and lifelong learner. They like writing code that brings people joy, helps them learn something new, or that makes resources more accessible. Diana completed their technical training at the Grace Hopper Program, where they were best known for their Stackathon-winning rat tracker app. Prior to transitioning into tech, they worked in community-based nonprofit programs, supporting individuals and their families as they navigated mental health issues, career changes, and LGBTQ+ identity. A cum laude graduate of Cornell University, Diana finds joy in making art, spending time in nature, and turning off their phone for hours-long stretches. Their work is grounded in person-centered, trauma-informed, and intersectional perspectives - and always will be - because software is for people. Violet Cutler (She/They) is a trans woman living in Philadelphia. She has been an artist and performer for more than a decade. She has also spent that time organizing DIY events in the queer and trans community and really values community building. She spent the last 4 years working in a food coop. She co-organized a successful union campaign when Covid struck. Despite this success, the dangers of the pandemic drove her to look for another way to support herself. In August of 2021, she quit her job and began studying to get into the Grace Hopper Program at Fullstack Academy. She graduated in April 2022 and looks forward to a career in Tech and Game Development. Her priorities moving forward are accessibility of the web and creating spaces in tech for other marginalized identities. Jessica Donig (she/her) is a Fullstack software engineer with a background in social entrepreneurship. Prior to attending Grace Hopper, Jessica co-founded a nonprofit, worked as the first employee of a YC-backed startup, and conducted clinical research at Stanford University. From the time she entered the startup world in 2015, Jessica wanted to learn to code, but the lack of female representation in the field had made her hesitant to do so. Now that she has completed her coursework, Jessica is passionate about helping other nontraditional engineers—especially women—see themselves in tech.

No list of great hacks would be complete without the Samy worm that ran amok on Myspace back in 2005. As Rachel points out, lots of hackers start out as experimenters, naturally curious coders who enjoy learning the rules and seeing how far they will bend before they break. If any hack made it's way into the mainstream consciousness over the last decade, it was WannaCry. It introduced a mainstream audience to the concept of ransomware and, because of the impact it had on critical hospital equipment, showed just how far software has embedded itself into our society. If you want to learn more about the Fullstack Cyber Bootocamp, you can check it out here. We discuss how the number of women in bootcamps has changed over time, if all-women bootcamps are good or bad for the problem, and how women can use bootcamps to make a transition into tech. David Yang is the co-founder and lead instructor at Fullstack Academy, and has 17 years of programming experience. The summer after graduating high school, David became the youngest software engineering intern to ever be accepted at Ernst and Young, and went on to earn bachelor's degrees in computer science and electrical engineering. Before founding Fullstack, he worked as a software engineer at Microsoft and Yahoo, among other companies, and taught at Columbia University as an adjunct professor. In our conversation, we talk about whether a coding bootcamp or college degree is the best choice for aspiring techies. He tells his own story, including what led him to create Fullstack, and gives advice on how to prepare for coding bootcamps, succeed, and impress employers after graduation.

Fullstack is an immersive software engineering school or "coding bootcamp" in lower Manhattan and Chicago. Seeing that coding is a skill with increasing career applications, David Yang and Nimit Maru founded Fullstack in 2012 through a collaboration at Y Combinator. David and Nimit met on the first day of freshman orientation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After graduating in 2004 with degrees in computer science and electrical engineering, they have joined forces on at least five startups and worked together at Yahoo.
Realizing the need for a more rigorous and accelerated curriculum for software engineers, Nimit Maru founded Fullstack Academy. He also founded its sister school, the Grace Hopper Program, which is the world's first tuition-deferred coding academy for women. Prior to Fullstack Academy, Nimit and his co-founder, David Yang, graduated from Y Combinator. He also worked as a software engineer at Yahoo! and got his business degree from Wharton. Aside from seeing how the tech scene in the Bay Area and in New York differ from each other, Nimit has also seen how much coding bootcamps have gained credibility and recognition (especially among large tech companies) over the years.
We had a great conversation with Kevin Hurley, a recent graduate from Fullstack Academy. Kevin is a high school math teacher who caught the coding bug and decided to switch careers. He's exactly the kind of self-motivated technologist that will thrive our the tech economy. So, if you are thinking about jumping into the tech space, or you're a CTO looking to hire talent from "outside the box" -- then come have a listen. One more thing ... if Chevy Chase is reading this description, we assure him that in this episode there will be NO math.
Alan and Jim spend a fun hour talking with Zeke Nierenberg, Academic Director/Chicago from Fullstack Academy. Fullstack teaches qualified non-programmers to code using an immersive 13-week program. Our bias going into this conversation was Alan's belief that you can't learn to code in 13 weeks. Zeke managed to school us both with Fullstack's point of view. Come have a listen and and decide for yourself.
“Javascript is like English – it hitched itself to the most powerful horse in the history of mankind, the web, and it has really exploded since then.” Fullstack Academy is a 13-week immersive program for students to learn software engineering. Their flagship course focuses primarily on Javascript and the associated frameworks used to build real-world web applications.
