In this episode of The Tech Leader's Playbook, Dr. David Yang shares his entrepreneurial journey, discussing the challenges and successes he faced while building multiple companies. He emphasizes the importance of understanding customer pain points and the three essential elements—referred to as the 'three magic crystals'—that contribute to startup success. The discussion also touches on the significance of market needs, the excitement of innovation, and the necessity of having the right team to navigate the complexities of launching a business. In this conversation, we dive into the future of AI and robotics, discussing the implications of emotional AI, the potential for non-biological companions, and the ethical considerations surrounding AI consciousness. They explore the changing landscape of work in an AI-driven world, emphasizing the need for re-skilling and finding new purposes. When citizens demand change and feel they are not being heard, they protest on the streets. Thanks to social media and TV coverage, we see protests every night on the news. But has the frequency or the character of protests changed? Who is protesting, and what makes them take to the streets? David Yang and Noam Yuchtman are two of the authors of a new review of the literature on protests. They tell Tim Phillips what they discovered. Find dem ved at klikke her. Tak skal du have, Steven.
Welcome to another episode, recorded at The Extraordinary Travel Festival in Armenia two months ago. And in this one, you can meet Romaine from Jamaica, David from Taiwan, and Odette from the Philippines. They have just completed the 193 UN Nations list and were all the first in their country to do so. Romaine Welds Romaine Welds is Jamaican-born and raised, and he migrated to the US in 2007. This was, in fact, his first time flying and travelling to a foreign country. Currently, Romaine lives in San Francisco and works full-time with an American airline, which has enabled him to travel the world. As a child, Romaine loved watching National Geographic shows, where he would dream himself away to far-away places. And never in a million years did he imagine that he would one day be accomplishing the goal of having visited all the countries in the world nor becoming the first Jamaican and Caribbean to do this. His last country was Antigua & Barbuda, even though Hurricane Fiona postponed it for a few weeks. Fiona was a powerful storm that caused massive damage and disruption across the Caribbean in September 2022. She left a trail of destruction, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and infrastructure damage. And interrupted Romaine's trip to Antigua & Barbuda. By the way, if you want to hear more about Romaine's last country, I've done three episodes from there. It's episodes 130-132 in your podcast app… Find them here. David Yang Our second guest is 57-year-old, David Yang. He's from Taiwan and has worked in International Business Development in the consumer electronics, video gaming, and toys industry. He visited many countries as part of his job. He's the first Taiwanese to travel to every country in the world, but he also lives in the US. He started to work on his remaining countries around 2016 after meeting a fellow traveller who convinced him to go for them all. At the time, he had a third of the countries to go to and completed the goal in July this year. Now he's working on a new goal – to complete 300 of Travel Century Club's list, and right now, he has about 19 left. The official TCC list of countries and territories has a total of 330 as of January 2022. So, I guess that he will go for the complete list after the 300. Odette Ricasa The last “193 baby” is 77-year-old Odette Ricasa, who became the first Filipino to travel to all the countries in the world as she arrived in her last UN country, Iraq, in August 2022. She also finished visiting all seven continents back in 2015. She's an active member of the “Philippine Global Explorers” travel community, where she heads the US West Coast chapter, and also a successful artist with over one hundred paintings, a motivational speaker, a talented piano player, and an author of six travel books. Odette has been travelling a lot longer than the two gentlemen at the table. Voice message From a Listener I got a voice message from a listener, Steven Ramsey, an American who lives in Bandung, Indonesia. He tells me that he listens to The Radio Vagabond while driving around on his scooter. Thank you so much, Steven. Great to hear that I'm with you on your scooter. I hope you're not getting confused listening to an episode where I'm walking around in an area with a lot of traffic. It might make you look over your shoulder if there's the sound of a big truck or a horn in the episode. I don't want to be responsible for any accidents. So, please be safe. But it's also what I do when I'm driving around on a scooter here on Koh Lanta, Thailand, where I am right now. I just take my Bluetooth headset and stick them in my ears before putting on the helmet. I can use Google Maps to give me directions so I know where to make the right turns. Actually, I started doing this when I was in Indonesia. Not in Bandung but on Bali. And I'm sorry to say that that's the only place in Indonesia I've been to so far. I'm sure many people would say that you haven't really been to Indonesia if you've only been to Bali. It's like, I get a little bit bummed when I hear of people who have to Denmark and have only been to Copenhagen. There's so much more to see… I really want to explore more of Indonesia, and I will take you up on a visit when I do. I was curious about how an American ended up living in Bandung, Indonesia – and not in Bali like so many other American nomads I know. It's a long story that I'm going into right now. But Bandung, Indonesia, is now on my list, so I can visit him and get that story. I enjoy hearing from you guys, so if you also want to send me a voicemail, go to TheRadioVagabond.com and scroll down to the bottom. Here you'll see a little button saying, “SEND VOICE MESSAGE”. There's also my WhatsApp number, so feel free to send me a voice message with WhatsApp – as Steven did. If you prefer to write, you can also go to the contact form on TheRadioVagabond.com/contact and write me a message there. Either way, please let me know what you're doing right now as you listen to these words. Follow the 193 Babies You can follow Romaine on Instagram as @TravelingTheWorldWithRomaine, David Yang is best found on Facebook, and I've also put a link to Odette's books in the note section of your podcast listening app. Next on The Radio Vagabond On Sunday, I get to meet another one of my heroes, and this time one that I'd been following for years. Paul Barbado, aka Barbs from Geography Now. Every time I'm going to a new place, I put on the episode he has from that country, so I get a lot of background on the place I'm going. You can start looking forward to hearing my conversation with Barbs – on Christmas Day. But you'll hear from me again already in two days in our Flashback Friday episode when we go to a mosque in Dubai. And then, maybe a new diary entry about my life right now on Saturday. Yes, I started doing a new type of episode where I speak for 10 minutes about what I'm doing right now. I did the first one on Saturday. Please find it in your podcast app. My name is Palle Bo. See you.
There are only three people who have visited every country twice. Gunnar Garfors from Norway is one, and one of our guests today, Slawek Muturi, is another one with that super rare accomplishment. In fact, he's visited more than 150 countries three times. The other guest today is Mette Ehlers Mikkelsen, who is very close to visiting her last country. And she's very unique too because she's a single mother who travels with her children. Of the few people who can claim they have gone to every country in the world, only 10% are women – and only three of those women are mothers. Slawek Muturi Slawek has been travelling independently since he was a student as he took to the rails in Europe. His first long overland trip took place in 1989 as he travelled from Poland to Kenya in a Land Rover. Slawek is half Polish – half Kenyan, so this trip connected his two homelands. In 2009, he completed the quest of travelling to every country in the world. And since then, he has done it one more time. Slawek travels on a shoestring budget, and he likes to travel like a local and only carries a small backpack. Mette Ehlers Mikkelsen Mette is one of the most-travelled mothers in the world, and as mentioned, most of the time travelling with her three kids. A week after I met Mette in Armenia, she went to Somaliland with her two oldest kids, Lærke and Nicolai. That brought Lærke on 116 countries, one more than me – and I am not 19 years old like her. A few weeks later, Mette went to Eritrea with her youngest daughter, Ella. Next from Armenia In the next episode from Yerevan, Armenia, you can meet Romaine Welds, David Yang and the 77-year-old Odette Ricasa. Romaine from Jamaica, Odette from the Philippines, and David from Taiwan have two things in common. They all just completed the 193 UN Nations list and were the first in their country to do so. So, they were dubbed “The 193 Babies”, and you can meet them all in the next episode. My name is Palle Bo. See you.

I'm back with fresh material. I know that I've been away a lot on that front this year, but now I'm back with new episodes from exciting destinations in the beginning of January. We start with a miniseries recorded in Yerevan, Armenia, in October. Here I attended the first-ever Extraordinary Travel Festival and got a chance to speak to some extraordinary travellers. You will get eight episodes between now and the new year. Two episodes every week – and you'll still get flashback episodes every Friday. So, we're going to be busy. Here are the people you can meet in the miniseries: Boris Kester, Charles Veley, Daniel Shachory, David Yang, Francis Tapon, Gus Rosted, Mette Ehlers Mikkelsen, Odette Ricasa, Paul Barbado, Romaine Welds, Slawek Muturi, and Tony Giles. But we start with Hungarian, Ildikó Szabó and Norwegian, Gunnar Garfors. Ildikó Szabó She was born and raised in the countryside of Hungary and was a late starter in travelling. She was 18 years old when she first left her home country for the first time, and it wasn't until she was almost 22 when she first set foot on a plane. At the age of 25, she went on my first solo trip outside of Europe when she backpacked in China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and the UAE. And then, she really caught the travel bug and decided to persuade a career in aviation. In 2018, at 36, she achieved her goal of visiting every country in the world as the first Hungarian and amongst one of the youngest female travellers achieving this milestone without any sponsorship. Gunnar Garfors Apart from being an anagram for Ungarn (Hungary), Gunnar is a journalist, public speaker and bestselling author who has visited every country twice. And he was the first person in the world to do that. He holds many records, but an interesting one is a Guinness World Record that he set in 2012 with Adrian Butterworth by being the first to visit five continents on the same day. Gunnar has written several books, with the first one called “How I ran Out of Countries.” Garfors also writes on his travelblog, garfors.com. Like me, he's worked in the radio industry for many years – in fact, we found out that we've attended the same radio conferences in the past. Now he's funding his life and travels as a writer and a public speaker. He grew up as the oldest of seven children in the tiny village of Naustdal on the Norwegian West Coast. Currently, he lives in Oslo – when he's not on one of his many journeys because he still feels there's a lot to see. Extraordinary Travel Festival As mentioned, I met Gunnar and Ildikó at the Extraordinary Travel Festival in Yerevan, Armenia. It was the first conference of its kind, and we all agreed it was an incredible event. It's still up in the open where the next Extraordinary Travel Festival will be, but according to Ric Gazarian, who is in charge of organising it, he's working on doing the next one in 2024. I did so many interviews in Yerevan, and in the next episode, we will feature another extreme travel legend, Charles Veley. He did something not many people have done: He got a chance to visit the world's most remote island, Bouvet. How I ran Out of Countries”. Extraordinary Travel Festival How Many Countries Are There In The World video Support Counting Countries at Patreon The new Counting Countries Merch Store Mette and I had been connected on Facebook via Every Passport Stamp, but we recently crossed paths in Jeddah for an evening of dinner and shisha with a group of extreme travelers. We were connected by former guest Henrik Jeppesen who was aware that both of us were traveling in KSA. While I was aware that Mette was a seasoned traveler, over dinner I heard more of her stories and thought she would be a great fit for Counting Countries. After my conversation with Mette, I will be checking in with Thor Pedersen again, of Once Upon A Saga. I have been documenting Thor's journey to every country in the world and all of the challenges he has been facing with this pandemic. You will hear a snippet of this conversation but my patrons will hear the entire conversation. The next episode will be the 100th episode. Our first episode was in 2016. I would like to thank everyone for their support of Counting Countries, especially my Patrons: Phillip Jones, Simen Flotvik Mathisen, Steph Rowe, Ted Nims, Bisa Myles, Thor Pedersen, and Adam Hickman for supporting Counting Countries. In the 3+ years that M4Edge has been around, we've aired over 50 episodes and, as listeners know, we usually ask our guests to give us their view of the future 20 years hence. Sometimes the answers are somewhat expected, sometimes they're a little humorous, and sometimes they're deeply thought provoking. As a holiday present, this episode offers a compilation of some of our favorites. We won't go so far as to say that this is a "best of" set, since we left out some great ones. But we've reached across the catalog, from our very first to our most recent episode, and offer you here some of our guests' views on the future of manufacturing, material design, food and agriculture, artificial intelligence, human resources, business analytics, robotics, clean energy, autonomous driving ... you know, M4Edge stuff. Stay tuned and stay curious as we retool our show in 2022!

According to the U.S. Centers For Disease Control (CDC), in 2018, over 36,000 people were killed, and over 2 million were injured, from motor vehicle crashes, costing the nation $44 billion in medical expenses and work loss. The American Automobile Association (pronounced "Triple A") is a federation of motor clubs throughout North America, and is a privately held, not-for-profit national member association and service organization, with over 60 million members in the United States and Canada, and provides a variety of services to its members, including roadside assistance and others. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety is a not-for-profit, publicly supported charitable research and education organization dedicated to saving lives by preventing traffic crashes and reducing injuries when crashes occur. Initially emphasizing projects related to safety patrols and driver education, today the Foundation has expanded its scope of work and has long been recognized as a leader in traffic safety, with a focus on four research priorities: Driver behavior and performance, Emerging technologies, Roadway systems and drivers, and Vulnerable road users. Dr. David Yang, is Executive Director at AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (and assumed this role in October 2016) Previously, Dr. Yang worked for the U.S. Department of Transportation and private consulting firms. Dr. Yang has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers and government reports on many transportation topics. He is an associate editor for the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems: Technology, Planning, and Operations and serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Transportation Science and Technology. Previously, he served as the chair of Transportation Research Board's Users Performance Section. Dr. Yang attended Purdue University and received his Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees in the field of civil engineering.
Speaker: David Yang, Assistant Professor Economics, Harvard University The conventional wisdom suggests a misalignment between autocracy and technological innovation. In this project, we examine whether there exists a political and economic alignment between the monitoring aims of autocracies and the innovative aims of AI firms. We gather comprehensive data on firms and government procurement contracts in China’s facial recognition AI industry. We find two results. First, autocrats benefit from AI: local unrest leads to greater government demands for public security AI, and increased AI investment suppresses subsequent unrest. Second, AI sector benefits from the autocrats: the contracted AI firms innovate more both for the government and commercial markets. Taken together, these results indicate a stable equilibrium between the autocrats and the AI sector. Using a directed technical change model, we show that autocrats’ demand for AI not only could enhance its stability, but may also sustain growth and bias innovation towards data-intensive sector when economies of scope from government data are sufficiently large. David Yang is an Assistant Professor of Economics. His research focuses on political economy, behavioral and experimental economics, economic history, and cultural economics. In particular, David studies the forces of stability and forces of changes in authoritarian regimes, drawing lessons from historical and contemporary China. David received a B.A. in Statistics and B.S. in Business Administration from University of California at Berkeley, and PhD in Economics from Stanford.

David Yang (CEO of Fullstack Academy) talks about the full journey of Fullstack Academy from founding to acquisition. We talk about what it takes to scale a coding bootcamp as well as the four C's of learning when it comes to designing a powerful and lasting educational experience.
Today's guests on the EdTech Startup Show are Nimit Maru and David Yang, co-CEOs of Fullstack Academy. Fullstack Academy is an innovative software development school with campuses in NYC and Chicago. Fullstack has graduated thousands of students working across every part of the technology ecosystem from first funding to FANG-sized. Fullstack also created the "Grace Hopper Program" - the first deferred-tuition coding bootcamp for women.
Having founded — and led to success — a number of successful startups and GSD Venture Studios, the show will revolve around interviews with thought leaders, bringing them together to speak about trends and directions in global technology and AI. And the first episode will offer a peek into the future of Emotion AI and Going Global, featuring AI serial entrepreneur, Dr. David Yang, CEO and Co-Founder of Yva.ai and Founder of ABBYY. Based in Silicon Valley, David is a member of the Band of Angels and has the most captivating journey that brought him to where he is today. He started his first company, ABBYY, back in 1989 when he was in his 4th year as a student at MIPT. The company became a global success over years — today, ABBYY has over 1,000 employees and is a leading developer of Artificial Intelligence, Content Intelligence, Optical Character Recognition, and Text Analytics software with offices in 11 countries. Thousands of companies and more than 50 million users in 200 countries rely on ABBYY applications and solutions. David has become a leading authority of the use of AI for employee engagement — his current company, Yva.ai, explores new applications of machine learning and AI to revolutionize employee engagement, happiness and productivity in the current context of global companies, remote teams, and increased need for solutions to accommodate the changing landscape of business and people operations. About GSD Venture Studios: We travel the world investing in resilient teams bold enough to #GoGlobal. For too long self-motivated entrepreneurs have navigated the minefield of challenges to launching a global company with very little support. The last thing you should bet on in this situation is an unproven team that you don't trust. GSD Venture Studios travels to every corner of the globe inviting resilient teams to establish partnerships that ensure organizations grow the right way, without games or gimmicks. Unlike traditional investors, we take senior operational (often co-founder) roles in these companies, capitalizing on our trusted reputation, experiences, and network to drive explosive growth. Follow us! Twitch: twitch.tv/pintparty5 Twitter: @PintParty Instagram: @pint.party This episode is dedicated to the memory of The Hawthorn Hotel. 1868-2020 Gone but not forgotten. This one is proper spicy. Like, this is the ghost pepper of episodes. I gathered a select group of Pint Party People because they all have something in common with each other that none of the others do, including me, the description of the episode. This connection gives them a unique insight into something everyone wonders about but never dares to ask. Follow us! Twitch: twitch.tv/pintparty Twitter: @PintParty Instagram: @pint.party This is an episode for the Pint Party wiki. Dave and Michael take the wheel this week and tell stories of their formative years that have shaped who they are today. Then the gang talk about Olympic skateboarding. Also there's some discussion about laundry. What do you want? We’re in lockdown, the washing machine is the biggest source of drama in our lives right now. Follow us! Instagram: @pint.party Twitter: @PintParty Twitch: twitch.tv/pintparty Heads up: This is the spiciest episode of Pint Party we’ve ever made. Don’t worry, we all still love each other. This week, John learned how passionate Dave is about the sanctity of sport. John had a silly idea of dedicating a different sport to each month of the year, where an entire season of a sport was played in that month. His intention was to come up with some jokes about how to market different sports months and sprinkle in some research he did about AFL big-wigs saying it was an interesting idea. What actually happened is John unwittingly stumbled into one of Dave's angry buttons. You never stop learning and now John knows not to press that button. Enjoy the spice. John is joined by: David Yang, and Lochie Beazleigh Talking points for this episode include: - 0:20 | Dishwasher Duty - 13:33 | Best Bubble to Be In - 28:05 | Nation Building - 33:15 | Sports Festivals - 52:50 | Skype Crowds

Follow us! Instagram: @pint.party Twitter: @PintParty Twitch: twitch.tv/pintparty At Pint Party, we’re not afraid of the B.S, we embrace it. Usually we use the B.S in moderation betwixt the banter. This week we decided to stop measuring and go all in. This week the gang spin a fiction about Golf's role in life. Later there is some solid, hard-hitting debate about the government's role in regulating glory holes. Also Lochie graduated from university and David has an angry list. John is joined by: David Yang, and Lochie Beazleigh. Of every single episode of Pint Party we have ever recorded, this is the only one we would recommend listening to twice. Listen to it before experiencing Hamilton and then have a listen to it after. The first time is a good primer for how to get into Hamilton and the second listen is as a fancast. We also talk about some other stuff at the start and at the end but the meat of this episode is all Hamilton. John is joined by: David Yang, JJ, and Ricki Needs. The Bant Boys are back in lockdown once again and for most of us it’s a minor inconvenience but for Dave it means having to look forlornly upon pictures of his father getting swole in his home gym while Dave withers without weights. Ricki proves that you’re never too old to find yourself spending all night playing minecraft, and John regales the lads with the ballad of some local lads getting caught by the cops because of a succulent Kentucky meal. John is joined by: David Yang, and Ricki Needs. Talking points for this episode include: 0:22 | Daddy Yang Gets Swole 08:01 | Ricki Discovers Minecraft 12:25 | Skip to 23:21 if you like NSW 23:21 | Dandy Boys Done Dirty 40:35 | Loot Sticks Follow us! John was supposed to do most of the talking this episode. His plan was to talk about Ketchup flavoured ice cream, while certainly not a pleasant concept it was one John believed would be an appropriate followup from last weeks Mountain Dew flavoured Doritos. Instead, you get 11 minutes of a hungover Dave and Ricki talking about Marmite scented Lynx followed by a discussion on their after grog bogs. There’s a tangent about grammar pluralisations and Possums too but we know you’re not here for that. You want the filth and that’s okay, that’s why we love you. In a classic return to form for Pint Party, the gimmick gang have a nuanced discussion of language and how it evolves with a culture in the context of how one with a daddy kink may express a desire to be spanked. Also consistent with the brand the discussion devolves into just discussing fetishes. The gang also vigorously debate who has the best hot chip in the Australian quick service restaurant industry. To part the curtain a little bit, John does plan out these episodes (mostly) and what to talk about so that there’s never a dull moment unless John makes it dull talking about Euro Truck Simulator 2 (which he didn’t do this week! That’s just an example!). However there are times when he lets the banter flow along its path of least resistance and only intervenes once it runs its course. This wasn’t one of these episodes, John had things to say and Ricki wanted to talk about them as well. Instead we went into our childhood and talked about Game Boys and Dragonball Z. Our guest is David Yang and he is the founder of a company called YVA, which is the subject of today’s show, but he’s no novice in startup world. David has founded TWELVE companies, starting in 4th grade, and including ABBYY which you may not have heard of but is actually pretty huge; it has offices in 11 countries and more than thousands of enterprise customers in 200 countries , so you can be sure that David thinks YVA has some serious potential. The World Economic Forum named him as one of the top 100 World Technology Pioneers. David’s resume and story are fascinating, but that’s not what makes this episode so good. It’s because YVA represents much of the great potential of AI but also embodies a lot of what makes people really uncomfortable about AI’s power. YVA is an AI offering in what’s called “People Analytics” which to me sounds vaguely Orwellian, but it’s a real domain and there are other companies in that space. David calls YVA an “MRI scanner for organizational health." It improves the quality of life at a company, improves efficiency, and generally makes the company a better place to work. But of course, in order to get that data, like an MRI, YVA peers deep inside, and analyzes many, many things you do at work, for example not just what words you use in your email or instant messaging app, but when and how often and to whom you write. M4Edge is about tech that can change how the economy functions, and YVA goes right to the heart of our workplaces. Is this big brother and too intrusive or is this simply a more efficient way to doing what HR does anyway, all while making employee’s performance and company performance better? As you’ll see at the end of the episode, David is very Gung-Ho about having AI in our lives. Do you think you’ll be as comfortable? Will you have a choice?

How do drivers react to ADAS features in their vehicles today? How many drivers know the limitations of technologies that are supposedly as simple as blind spot warnings in their vehicles? SAFE Greg and Pete explored these questions at AVS 2019 with Dr. David Yang, Executive Director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety was founded in 1947 as a not-for-profit research and education organization focused on saving lives through preventing traffic collisions and reducing injuries when crashes do occur. Dr. Yang chatted with us about some of the fascinating research they are undertaking across four priority areas: driver behavior and performance, emerging technologies, roadway systems and drivers, and vulnerable road users. The summer after graduating high school, David became the youngest software engineering intern to ever be accepted at Ernst and Young, and went on to earn bachelor's degrees in computer science and electrical engineering. Before founding Fullstack, he worked as a software engineer at Microsoft and Yahoo, among other companies, and taught at Columbia University as an adjunct professor. In our conversation, we talk about whether a coding bootcamp or college degree is the best choice for aspiring techies. He tells his own story, including what led him to create Fullstack, and gives advice on how to prepare for coding bootcamps, succeed, and impress employers after graduation.

Fullstack is an immersive software engineering school or "coding bootcamp" in lower Manhattan and Chicago. Seeing that coding is a skill with increasing career applications, David Yang and Nimit Maru founded Fullstack in 2012 through a collaboration at Y Combinator. David and Nimit met on the first day of freshman orientation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After graduating in 2004 with degrees in computer science and electrical engineering, they have joined forces on at least five startups and worked together at Yahoo.
Realizing the need for a more rigorous and accelerated curriculum for software engineers, Nimit Maru founded Fullstack Academy. He also founded its sister school, the Grace Hopper Program, which is the world's first tuition-deferred coding academy for women. Prior to Fullstack Academy, Nimit and his co-founder, David Yang, graduated from Y Combinator. He also worked as a software engineer at Yahoo! and got his business degree from Wharton. Aside from seeing how the tech scene in the Bay Area and in New York differ from each other, Nimit has also seen how much coding bootcamps have gained credibility and recognition (especially among large tech companies) over the years.
