Rick Welch sits down with Christopher Beth and Eric Ogea to discuss effective ways to minister to others in the world. Christopher Beth is the Founder, Chief Storyteller, and Director of The Bucket Ministry, a nonprofit sharing God's love through the gift of safe, clean drinking water. A former business consultant, Christopher felt called to ministry after a 2012 mission trip to the Brazilian Amazon, where he witnessed the devastating effects of unclean water. Hearing God's call to “help them,” he founded The Bucket Ministry in 2015, which has since expanded to over 20 countries, providing water filters and the Gospel to those in need. Christopher lives near Dallas, Texas, with his wife, Sheri. They have two grown children, Savannah and Griffin, and several grandchildren. To learn more or assist The Bucket Ministry, please visit the below links:The Bucket Ministry Website: https://thebucketministry.org/Give One, Get One Program: https://thebucketministry.org/give-one-get-one/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebucketministry/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bucketministryVimeo: https://vimeo.com/user46098807If you'd like to become a patron of the Burros Patreon page to get exclusive content, please visit: www.patreon.com/theburrosofbereaIf you'd like to learn more about us, please visit our website at: www.burrosofberea.com Thanks for listening!
Capitalism gets a bad rap as a ruthless, dog-eat-dog system, but in reality, it's the most effective way to create shared prosperity. Unlike socialism, which focuses on redistributing wealth, capitalism multiplies it. Take Peter Thiel's $500,000 investment in Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. At the time, Thiel was the wealthier of the two. But as Facebook scaled, Zuckerberg became exponentially richer than Thiel—while Thiel still walked away vastly wealthier than before. That's the power of investment: it creates more wealth for everyone involved, rather than just shifting it around.Year Of The Opposite - Travis Stoliker's Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The Difference Between Helping and HurtingThe problem with socialism—and even well-intentioned charity—is that it often weakens the very people it's trying to help. Giving someone a fish feeds them for a day, but teaching them to fish feeds them for a lifetime. Yet capitalism takes it further—it builds the fishing industry, funding boats, bait companies, and supply chains that allow entire communities to sustain themselves indefinitely. On the other hand, if we contrast that with TOMS Shoes' “Buy One, Give One” model. The idea was simple: for every pair of shoes sold, they donated a pair to someone in need. It sounded great—but in practice, it wiped out local shoemakers in many African and Latin American countries. By flooding the market with free shoes, TOMS put local businesses out of work, leaving communities more dependent rather than self-sufficient. What seemed like generosity actually eroded economic independence—because giving isn't always helping.Charity Without Investment Creates DependenceThis doesn't just happen on a macro level; it happens in personal relationships too. Think about a family member who struggles with addiction or gambling. Giving them money doesn't fix their problem—it fuels it. Paying off their debts or covering their rent doesn't make them more responsible—it teaches them that someone else will always bail them out.Real help isn't a handout; it's an investment in transformation. Just like an entrepreneur needs mentorship, capital, and a path to self-sufficiency, struggling individuals need accountability, discipline, and real stakes in their own success. Without personal responsibility, no amount of outside aid will create lasting change. The True Social Good of CapitalismThis is why capitalism isn't just about making money—it's about creating opportunity. When you invest in a person, a business, or a system, you're not just providing resources—you're building capacity. You're giving people the ability to create, grow, and become self-sufficient rather than remain dependent. The beauty of capitalism is that it aligns incentives and scales effort. It doesn't just redistribute fish—it builds a fishing economy. It's socialism reimagined—not as a static transfer of wealth, but as a system where success fuels more success. The more we understand this, the more we can use capitalism to empower rather than enable—to build instead of just give. And that's what makes it the only system of shared wealth that truly works. Get full access to Year Of The Opposite - Travis Stoliker's Substack at www.yearoftheopposite.com/subscribe

Justin Wolff is a Social Entrepreneur who has built his career by blending commerce with cause. As the CEO and Co-Founder of Junk Theory and former Co-Founder and Chief Giving Officer (CGO) at Yoobi, Justin has built impactful brands by transforming narratives and driving change. At Yoobi, Justin created and oversaw the Buy One, Give One program, building meaningful impact centered around what students needed most, and what teachers were most likely to spend money out of pocket for. To scale the giving program at Yoobi, Justin forged strategic partnerships to ensure donated school supplies reached those in need nationwide. He infused a giving spirit into Yoobi's culture, influencing decisions across design, marketing, and operations. By its second year in business, Yoobi was providing more than 1 million kids per year with free sets of school supplies, right here in the U.S. To date, Yoobi has provided more than 7 million kids across the US, and counting. In 2023, Justin launched his second brand, JunkTheory, which aims to end the plastic era in beauty – a category that produces over 120 billion pieces of plastic packaging per year. Clean skincare, he believes, should start with healthy formulas, but must also consider what those formulas come packaged in. JunkTheory is the first clean skincare line where nothing goes in the trash, and everything is packaged in metal – the most recycled material on earth. Prior to his life as an entrepreneur, Justin was a project finance attorney – leveraging his passion for the environment by specializing in the clean energy space, where he helped develop utility-scale wind and solar farms around the world. In This Conversation We Discuss:[00:41] Intro[01:51] Building impact brands with purpose and innovation[03:44] Redefining sustainable & ‘clean beauty'[05:05] Solving recycling challenges with aluminum[07:16] Why great products outweigh great packaging[09:24] Combining sustainability with original formulas[10:19] Launching organically with limited resources[12:34] How product efficacy drives customer retention [13:16] Episode sponsors: StoreTester and Intelligems[16:28] Digital strategies with performance marketing[18:43] Building impact partnerships for brand awareness[19:32] Organic growth sets the stage for paid success[21:33] Growing a genuine audience without shortcuts[22:37] Time for paid ads and time to let products speak[24:06] Try Junk Theory and contribute to a cleaner planetResources:Subscribe to Honest Ecommerce on YoutubeMost recyclable, earth-powered skincare junktheory.com/Follow Justin Wolff linkedin.com/in/justin-wolff-6b563913/Book a demo today at intelligems.io/Done-for-you conversion rate optimization service storetester.com/If you're enjoying the show, we'd love it if you left Honest Ecommerce a review on Apple Podcasts. Dave Heath is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bombas. Prior to the launch in 2013, Dave dedicated two years to rigorous product testing and refinement to create the best performing and most comfortable sock available, while staying true to their mission of helping those in need. Dave holds a BA from Babson College with majors in Marketing, Management, and Entrepreneurship. Previously, he led business development as one of the founding employees at UrbanDaddy followed by joining the new media acquisitions and strategy team at Yucaipa Companies. As a true serial entrepreneur, Dave has founded three companies, with one successful exit, and has invested and consulted on a range of start-up businesses from concept, through launch and continued growth. Dave has been featured on ABC's Shark Tank, NBC TODAY Show, CBS This Morning, ABC Good Morning America, Bloomberg TV and in The New York Times, and was named EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2017.In this episode of The Retail Pilot, Dave Heath joins Ken Pilot and discusses the journey of starting a mission-based sock company and the challenges and successes along the way. He shares insights on the importance of focus, sustainable growth, and using time to your advantage. Dave also talks about the power of partnerships and collaborations that align with Bombas' mission. He emphasizes the need for authenticity and staying true to the brand's values. Additionally, he discusses the role of technology in marketing and the future of the company. In this conversation, Dave Heath discusses the potential of AI in e-commerce and its application in various areas such as asset creation, site updates, and site merchandising. He also introduces Constructor, an AI-powered site merchandising tool. The conversation touches on the use of AI in customer service and the importance of understanding the customer experience. Additionally, Dave shares his favorite streamed shows and provides a promo code for Bombus products.Key Takeaways from this episode of The Retail Pilot with Dave Heath, CEO of Bombas:1. Entrepreneurial Journey and Problem-Solving Approach: Dave Heath's journey began with a desire to work for himself, learning various skills and exploring different industries, always with the intent of eventually starting his own business. His approach was less about the industry and more about identifying and solving problems. He noticed the lack of socks in homeless shelters, leading him to start Bombas with a mission to donate a pair of socks for every pair sold.2. Socially Conscious Business Model: Bombas was established with a buy-one-give-one model, similar to TOMS Shoes, to address the significant need for socks in homeless communities. Over time, this model evolved to include not just socks but also underwear and t-shirts, the top three most requested clothing items at homeless shelters.3. Founding Team Dynamics: Dave Heath, along with co-founder Randy Goldberg and two others, formed a cohesive team where each member possessed specific skills that complemented one another. Their self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses helped them work effectively together, aligning their shared values and visions for the company's ethical growth.4. Sustainable Growth Strategy: Bombas adopted a deliberate, focused growth strategy rather than chasing rapid expansion. They avoided excessive fundraising and maintained profitability from the outset. They prioritized methodical growth, aiming for sustainability and quality over immediate scale. This approach allowed them to retain control and avoid unnecessary stress associated with continuously raising capital.5. Multi-Channel Distribution Strategy: Despite primarily being a direct-to-consumer (D2C) brand, Bombas strategically entered the wholesale market after reaching a certain revenue milestone. They carefully selected appropriate retail partners, ensuring the brand fit and maintaining their status as the top-selling sock brand in every store they entered. While primarily D2C-focused, they've recognized the value of being present where customers shop, gradually expanding into various channels without diverting too many resources from their core business.6. Product Distribution Strategy: Dave Heath emphasizes a focus on strategic distribution channels like Nordstrom rather than vending machines, as the latter may not significantly impact Bombas' growth due to low sales volume.7. Brand Strategy & Collaborations: Bombas values collaborations that align with their mission. Dave highlights partnerships with Sesame Street, Disney princesses, and LGBTQ+ initiatives, showcasing the brand's commitment to giving back and staying mission-driven.8. Marketing Approach: Bombas employs a multi-channel marketing strategy, using various platforms like TV (including connected TV), Facebook, Google, and more. They leverage different channels to reach diverse audiences, considering each channel's effectiveness for specific demographics.9. Competition Perspective: Bombas sees larger commodity incumbents like Hanes, Fruit of the Loom, and Gildan as primary competitors. They aim to capture market share from these established brands by positioning Bombas as a premium mass-market brand known for comfort and quality.10. Tech Integration: While Bombas utilizes technology, such as AI tools for customer service and site merchandising, they prioritize being an apparel company that uses technology, not a technology-driven company. They cautiously approach integrating tech, focusing on customer experience and efficiency without compromising their core values.
At a time when even faith is politicized it is essential to our nation that the national nonprofit Faith in Public Life persists. It is a safe space for leaders from diverse faith traditions to find common ground and speak out in support of a more just democracy. For almost 20 years FIPL has spoken up for equity and inclusion as champions of LGBTQ equality, immigration rights and strategies for reducing gun violence. Its focus now is on safeguarding voters and election administrators and all who participate in civil life from political violence. And it is supporting the right of all people to comprehensive reproductive healthcare. In this episode of Power Station, Faith in Public Life CEO Jeanné Lewis shares how she is driven by her own faith and a passion for empowering those who have not experienced the confidence and agency needed to act and lead. She further lives her values as a member-owner of Community Grocery Cooperative, a new economic model for bringing groceries to Washington DC's under-resourced Wards 7 and 8. Jeanné exemplifies what it means to believe in the power of the collective to strengthen our democracy. Hear her.

Under Vicki's leadership, Monroe became known as a student-centered school that values both student and adult collaborative learning. In 2020, Vicki Published Lead With Instructional Rounds: Creating a Culture of Professional Learning, a Lead Like a Pirate Guidebook, with Dave Burgess Consulting. This book shares the journey of a difficult school merger and how it healed and grew into a healthy school culture using a unique school-centered approach to instructional rounds. In 2021, Vicki was part of a 100 author collaboration to write 100 No-Nonsense Things That All Teachers Should Stop Doing and 100 No-Nonsense Things That All Administrators Should Stop Doing, both published by Pushing Boundaries Consulting.Currently Vicki trains and develops schools to implement her grassroots approach to instructional rounds with a strength-focused lens that empowers school staff to learn and grow from and with each other. If you are listening to this podcast, there's a good chance you are a motivated educator looking for ways to improve your teaching and the classroom experiences of your students. And often that drive to improve comes with a price tag, one that's frequently and unfortunately left to the teacher to pay. My guest today is Dr. Kate Good, and we talk about how she made her vision of flexible seating in her classroom come to life through crowdfunding. Kate is a Dual Language Immersion instructor and teacher mentor in Portland, Oregon. She opted to teach as a summer job 13 years ago, and since then, her teaching career has led her to classrooms in three states and two countries. Kate and I overlapped in graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill, where in 2018 she completed her PhD in Romance Studies. Kate planned to teach Spanish literature at a college or university. Two years later, though, she found herself in a middle school immersion classroom, populated with heritage speakers.Today Kate shares how she re-envisioned her post-pandemic classroom seating arrangement, how this change has positively affected her middle school students, and how she managed to raise the money from outside of her school and without dipping into her own personal bank account to make it happen.Below are links to some of the sites mentioned by Kate in the podcast. 1. You're familiar with the model that we're talking about today. You buy something, and with your purchase, something—whether an item or money—is donated to a person or organization. Buy one, give one. But what if those on the receiving end aren't actually getting anything they need?In today's episode, we're sharing three examples of buy one, give one corporate philanthropy (TOMS, Warby Parker, and Bombas). We're going into how each philanthropic concept came about, how this model can have negative effects, and ways to approach the model that are more helpful to those in need. What's in this episode:[05:21] Understanding buy one, give one philanthropy and cause marketing[08:03] How TOMS (shoes) was built on cultural appropriation and actually has negative impacts on the countries it “serves”[17:05] How Warby Parker (glasses) has done a better job of transparency with their model and actually working with organizations on the ground in the places that they serve[20:25] How Bombas (socks) started their organization out of a need they recognized (rather than a sock company with a marketing ploy) and how they're not as overt about their buy one, give one philanthropy[28:10] The implications of this kind of corporate philanthropy, and how consumers can continue to demand transparencyFor full show notes, resources, links and to download the transcript, visit our website: https://thenonprofitreframe.com/Do you love our show and want to hear even more from us? No LeBron James on Friday, but as Darvin Ham noted, this was a very winnable game, anyway. Well, that didn't stop the Lakers from losing! 120-114 was the final against Sacramento. The Lakers fall now to 2-10, and with Brooklyn coming to town on Sunday and LeBron potentially missing another game, the team is running out of time to right the ship and play their way back into the Western Conference playoff race. (Seems crazy to say that 12 games into the season, but they're 2-10, so it's not really crazy at all.)Anthony Davis wasn't a factor in the fourth, but was it his fault? Sacramento overloaded hard on Davis, sending two or three defenders at the slightest hint he'd catch the ball, and the Lakers simply had no counter. Meanwhile, DeAaron Fox went off for the Kings, having his way against multiple Lakers defenders and picking up critical buckets down the stretch. The Lakers closed the first half horribly, then blew a lead late in the second. This one, LeBron or not, needed to be in the win column. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Carlos Rodón is a slam-dunk qualifying offer candidate for the San Francisco Giants. Rodón will decline his $22.5M option, then the SF Giants will give him the one-year, $19.65M QO, which he'll also reject (since it's worth less than the option he'll already have declined). But what about a far more borderline case: Joc Pederson? Pederson's value, according to what teams spend per Win Above Replacement in free agency, was roughly $15M to $16M in 2022. On first glance, $19.65M being so close to those numbers makes it seem like the Giants might give the offer to Pederson. But they almost certainly will not.The reason? It seems highly unlikely that the Giants will lock themselves into nearly $20M, early in the offseason, to a defensively challenged platoon player, even though they may ultimately want him back and his production may be worth roughly that price. The SF Giants must improve dramatically this offseason, and locking up so much cash into a lateral move that doesn't improve the defense seems like it would be a huge risk. Pederson would likely accept the Giants' qualifying offer if they gave it to him, which could be viewed as a positive in some respects. The San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies advancing to the NLCS proves the point host Ben Kaspick made when Juan Soto was acquired by the Padres at the trade deadline: the Giants don't need to concern themselves so much with what the other teams in their division are doing. The Phillies finished in third place, with 87 wins, behind two teams that won 101 games (the Mets and Braves). Both of those teams are eliminated, and the Phillies are the last team standing from the NL East. Clearly, having two powerhouses in your division doesn't mean you're necessarily doomed.Lastly, we learned over the weekend that Bruce Bochy interviewed for the Rangers' managerial opening. What would it mean for SF Giants fans to see Bochy managing another team after he "retired" a few short years ago? It would certainly be tough to see, but Gabe Kapler has brought a lot of positive change to this organization, specifically with his cutting-edge coaching staff that has helped players improve and fostered a culture of perpetual development at the major league level.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Nikhil Arora and Alejandro Velez started Back to the Roots by asking the same question in their business class–how can you grow mushrooms from used coffee grounds? So instead of taking their jobs in investment baking, the 2 friends began their journey of building an organic gardening brand for the next generation. Back to the Roots is America's #1 organic gardening company and doubled its business 4 years in a row. They offer a wide range of grow kits, seeds, soil, and more to empower people to experience the magic of growing their food from inside their homes. How valuable is your time? Are you conveying that value to your potential clients? In the first five years of running my business, I spent way too long thinking I was the only one who could handle important communications with current and potential VIP corporate clients. Taking inspiration from Cyrano De Bergerac, today I'm sharing a mindset and process that enables a team member to take on the heavy-lifting of client communications. There's so much energy and attention that swirls around during a launch, and I cannot thank you enough for helping create the momentum that we did! I've talked a lot about launching with ease and joy, generating magic and serendipity, not muscling through book marketing. I've also talked about sprinting through the finish, and the overwhelm that comes from wanting to give a big creative project every last drop of energy to help it succeed.Today I'm sharing my strategy of sending the first 1,000 serendipity seeds out into the world. Jenny Blake is an author and podcaster who helps entrepreneurs move from friction to flow through smarter systems, powered by Delightfully Tiny Teams. Her third book, “Free Time,” launches March 22 — and it's just in time for me! It's easy to get caught up in just getting things done without really stopping to think how it could get done faster or better, or if you're really the right person to be getting it done at all. And "Free Time" is made specifically for people who are struggling with busywork, what Jenny calls the bottleneck in the way of your profit and potential. After reading the book, I've been thinking about my business and what I do in it completely differently, and I'm so excited for the rest of the world to get ahold of this. Anyone who preorders a hardcover or ebook edition prior to 3/22/22 is eligible for the https://itsfreetime.com/bogogo (Buy One, Get One, Give One) bonus. They can submit their receipt to receive instant, early access to the audiobook edition, with instructions on how to gift one early copy of the audiobook to a friend. What is “Free Time?” We talked to Jenny back in https://www.conniewsteele.com/episodes/76 (episode 76) to discuss career pivoting, a topic that only got more important as the pandemic continued and we saw some huge changes to the workforce. She offers an easy-to-follow framework with The Pivot Method, and that's one of the reasons we really appreciate Jenny as a podcast guest and an author — she always offers concrete systems and tactics that anyone can leverage. “Pivot” was about adapting to change. If change is the only constant, how do we get better at it? And how do we more strategically map what's next, particularly by starting with small pilots and experiments. “Free Time” is about optimizing what's here now. So within our current role, how can we reduce the level of overwhelm, burnout, and busywork that we typically face in our business? Many business owners and even leaders of organizations have had this need to control everything where we become the Chief Everything Officer. There is often a fear that if these activities are not within our domain of control, then we're not going to get to the outcome you want. Which then leads to stress and stress is a systems problem. The ultimate goal of “Free Time” is what Jenny calls High Net Freedom. This is freedom of choice; what we work on, when we work on it, and with whom. You're optimizing for time and energy, not just money. The “Free Time” Framework: Align, Design, Assign The Free Time framework is composed of three stages intended to help you spot important trends in how you work so that you can simplify, streamline, and de-stress. 1. Align. The first stage is about aligning a project or an area of the business to your values, energy, and strengths. The goal is to understand what is giving your energy and what is taking it away. It's about figuring out, should you be doing this in the first place? And if something about the work is not aligned, how can you realign it and recalibrate? Think about how you are systematizing the spirit of your business and remember there's no point in optimizing something that no longer needs to be done. Your values are an important piece of this because they provide the logic for you and your team to make the relevant tradeoffs and decisions when there are tough choices to make. But it's important to communicate that logic to everyone else because they have to understand what those values truly look like in practice. 2. Design. The second stage asks us to be really intentional about the ideal outcomes and impact, and even designing a process for how you want to work on something. This is where you start to think about how to map out what to do and how to do it. You can't just decide you want to stop doing busywork and drop it all. You have to be intentional and design how...
