Big change starts with small actions. When we act with purpose and kindness every day, we create ripples that can change the world. In this inspiring episode of Reflect Forward, I sit down with Masami Sato, the visionary Founder and CEO of B1G1, an organization transforming businesses into powerful forces for good. Masami shares her incredible journey from growing up in Japan, feeling disconnected, to becoming a global entrepreneur committed to creating win-win connections and impact across the world. She explains the philosophy behind B1G1, where everyday business transactions lead to meaningful, high-impact projects—like providing life-saving water or planting trees with every purchase. Masami's vision is simple yet profound: small, consistent actions can create massive ripple effects of kindness and change. Masami shares why she believes the power of small actions and why “thinking big” should always be paired with “acting small” to truly transform the world. She illustrates this beautifully by sharing the example of Miren, a swim school owner who links every swim lesson to providing access to clean water for children worldwide. We also explore the importance of kindness in business, the role of long-term thinking, and how family values can inspire sustainable leadership. Masami challenges traditional business models, emphasizing that real success is about positively impacting lives, not just maximizing profits. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to redefine success, cultivate a purpose-driven organization, and lead with kindness and impact. ‘What if every time you do business, something great happens in the world?' This is the question that Paul Dunn's mentee and co-founder of B1G1, Masami Sato, asked him and which subsequently changed the course of Paul's life forever. Before this point Paul believed there were only two intentions to focus on as an entrepreneur; deliver amazing value to those he was privileged to serve and to have fun doing it. Now Paul says there is a third thing. That something great happens in the world as a result. Welcome to the 'Gina Gardiner & Friends Show' - this episode features my guest, Masami Sato whose theme was 'B1G1.'
An amazing conversation with Masami Sato ranging from her shy young global backpacker days, cooking with strangers, connecting with generous entrepreneurs around the world and her beautiful contributions in our latest book, How to Talk to Strangers: to Decrease Anxiety, Build Confidence and Make a Bigger Difference in the World
Host Helen Lee continues her interview with Masami Sato, Founder and CEO of B1G1 whose original name stands for BUY1GIVE1, where “every time somebody purchases something, something could be given to benefit others, to create a positive impact.” It has become an initiative that helps businesses embed social impact into their everyday operations. This global giving initiative is rapidly expanding into a global movement that makes business giving easy, effective and meaningful by focusing funds towards more than 500 carefully selected high-impact giving projects. Masami is also a best selling Amazon author with the books ‘Legacy : The Sustainable Development Goals in Action', ‘Joy : The Gift of Acceptance, Trust and Love', and ‘Giving Business – Creating the Maximum Impact in the Meaning-Driven World.' A two time TEDx speaker and frequent podcast, event and media interviewee, Masami spreads her message of philanthropy and a new way of global business and is now the latest treasured guest of Transform and Thrive. Helen and Masami discuss the culture of B1G1 and its exponential growth, the concepts of targets and goals, the mechanism of B1G1 and what happens when you join and how we move forward together, openly supporting one another towards a better future and an improved humanity. KEY TAKEAWAYS Even though B1G1's growth has been phenomenal, there is still much more room for growth due to the proliferation of the huge number of SMEs still out there that can join the initiative. The 2025 target for B1G1 is 12,000 businesses, but as it is already growing exponentially, Masami is not limited to this number as she is already looking for innovative new ways to reach and enrol the millions of small businesses still out there. Regardless of all our projections and planning, the future is never truly foreseeable. We can have targets, but less measurable goals such as fixing climate change, are very difficult to pinpoint as complete and successful. When you become a B1G1 business you have access to their platform with your own account. With that you can find the impact activities from around the world that you can contribute to and link to your business transactions automatically, directly linking the number of business actions taken to a given activity. These businesses can create milestones to celebrate once they have reached a certain level or number of giving transactions so they can note their success with the amount of positive effect they have had instead of traditional KPIs and financial markets. BEST MOMENTS ‘We definitely need more people like her in our world right now, who are not merely pontificating on what's right or wrong, nor slamming what they deem to be wrong or bad without really contributing towards the change that they and we all want to see in our world.' – Helen ‘By 2030, by the completion of the Sustainable Development Goals come to fruition, we need to achieve all of these important things, so all of the programs together. We have a limited time to achieve these things before things get too late.' - Masami ‘I have an optimistic part and a conservative part. The conservative part makes me go ‘ok let's come up with a reasonable KPI. Overdelivering and under-promising is a natural inclination I have but at the same time, actually being open to the exponential ideas and goals is also very important.' – Masami ‘That daily success is actually very important, because that part we can ensure, but the future one might, kind of, change.' - Masami ‘The initiative has a subscription model. Businesses are contributing a small fee to the membership subscription. This helps us to drive our initiative and cover all of the costs too, so we make sure that when businesses are providing a tree then what they contribute, 100% of that will go to the project.' – Masami ‘As long as we are open, our hearts are open and our minds are open we learn from each other and support each other.' – Helen ‘More than anything else I think she has done a tremendous job in building B1G1 with Paul and her team and the members and is a fine example of how we can all contribute and collectively come together to make our world work for the majority of us.' – Helen ABOUT THE HOST HELEN LEE Founder & Principal Coach of Lee Heiss Coaching, Helen Lee coached thousands of clients worldwide and multinationals in Asia-Pacific in the last three decades. Host Helen Lee interviews Masami Sato, Founder and CEO of B1G1 (BUY1GIVE1), a global giving initiative that is rapidly expanding into a global movement. By helping businesses embed the process of giving right into their everyday operations, B1G1 makes business giving easy, effective and meaningful by focusing funds towards 500 carefully selected high-impact giving projects. Helen and Masami discuss how she became an entrepreneur and change maker, the start of B1G1, the power of small, positive life philosophy and the changes we need to make within ourselves to step forward. This includes Masami's idea of harnessing gratitude for the positives in our business, making full use of the power of collaboration among many worldwide and turning this combined positive energy into a force for good! Do check out https://b1g1.com/ and if it resonates with you, do be part of that force for good in this particular way, for the wellbeing of humanity and our world! KEY TAKEAWAYS Masami was born in Japan, with hard working parents in the corporate world. Shy and not outspoken but very curious, her first international journeys taught her how similar people throughout the world are and also how kind. When she became a mother, she thought about all the children in the world not as lucky as her own and this spurred her on to become an entrepreneur to fund philanthropic efforts with her own food company. By breaking down into small, daily activities, the need to fund giving activities becomes habitual and simple, with more businesses being able to access these giving models, creating a larger groundswell of philanthropy and a movement of kindness and giving. As recently as May 2021, B1G1 had already facilitated more than 193 million giving impacts. Yet, amazingly, the numbers have now surged to more than 303 million in just over a year! The message of B1G1 spreads exponentially from business to business through their contacts with each other. Instead of seeing lack and limitation within ourselves, that add up to a sense of powerlessness to make a difference and inaction to take any steps to help transform our world, we can all take small actions daily and collectively create a massive impact. We are starting to recognise the flaw in the model of short term profit maximisation and we are starting to think about long term implications. Awareness of the negativity of the old models is growing. Masami truly embodies the Higher Intelligence that we are being called to align with and focuses on all that is important with such grace, energy and determination by simply doing what we can each day instead of obsessing over what we cannot do, and with the support and contribution of her husband Paul Dunn who is Chairman and Co-Founder of B1G1, their team and members. BEST MOMENTS ‘I was very touched and inspired by how like, no matter how little some people had, there was so much generosity.' – Masami ‘Then I thought, what if instead of trying to do a big thing, one day, what if we did something small every day, from today? That was the start of the idea of B1G1.' – Masami ‘We always see ‘big' things in the media and everywhere. Quite often, those big things could be negative big things, like climate change or war, or refugees being displaced and all that kind of overwhelming big issues. Then, we feel powerless, sad or negative.' – Masami ‘Actually our day to day actions, when we do it together, rather than alone, can be very powerful. And by transforming our regular habits, we could actually really transform our destiny. That's why the power of small is important.' – Masami ‘Because of what you've done it's growing to that point where it can grow even further and really fast now, is that true?' – Helen ‘Because humans are afflicted with this concept of not being good enough, this false idea of not being good enough. So, it holds us back, this idea of perfection.' – Helen ‘It's very difficult to make a judgement on what's better or what's more important. What we can do instead is to appreciate the fact that all these things could be important. But the difference is bringing together different actions, different aspirations, different people, different experiences and ideas, is really more important in enabling us all to move forward. I think that actually makes our journey more enjoyable and meaningful.' – Masami 'As we become braver, understand things more, respect each other and not jump onto judgment but really reflect what we can do today, and put in place certain actions, rather than feeling overwhelmed by things we cannot change. If all of these businesses start to align together with the new set of values, then we can actually change this world and create greater sustainability. But it is a critical time, whether we will have time to turn things around.' - Masami ‘If we could all come together with different intentions but also with the shared understanding that we are in it together, we are not individuals. As a whole we share this place together and if this place cannot exist anymore, none of us will be here.' – Masami ‘Her views carry what I call the essence of Higher Intelligence, which I have talked about quite often in my various episodes, especially the solo ones.' - Helen ‘We all have access to this Higher Intelligence and are called to increasingly align with and embody it now. So, this is a very heartening interview for me, to see it embodied and exercised in this courageous lady.' – Helen ‘It is a simple, powerful and delightful approach for all of us to adopt, to get off our behinds and contribute positively towards creating our collective destiny and world.' – Helen ABOUT THE HOST HELEN LEE Founder & Principal Coach of Lee Heiss Coaching, Helen Lee coached thousands of clients worldwide and multinationals in Asia-Pacific in the last three decades. Gina Gardiner and Friends - Fraser Hay & Masami Sato
Host Helen Lee continues with Part 2 of her interview with Paul Dunn, Chairman of B1G1 (BUY1GIVE1) Business for Good, a global giving initiative that has grown into a global movement to introduce a new change making model for a newly transforming world. Humanity has been immersed in a culture of what we can get, much more than what we can give, when the essence of our true nature is love and a generosity of spirit. But there is an increasing number of business leaders worldwide who are influencing the shift and return to our natural caring and giving aspects. And Paul Dunn and his wife Masami Sato have been doing just that through B1G1 in the last 15 years. Being caring, giving and loving coupled with making a difference as an integral part of our daily lives not only help us personally but makes good business sense as well, as they and other leaders have shown and Paul speaks about in this episode. Helen and Paul discuss a new attitude to ageing, enjoying every moment, combined impacts, the future of business and governments, the lessons of history, the motivations of social enterprises and the progress of B1G1. KEY TAKEAWAYS We have been living in a culture that focuses on what we can get, with a scarcity mindset installed in most of our methods and systems. Paul and his wife Mesami Sato offer through B1G1 a new model which provides small and medium businesses worldwide an opportunity to install a giving system to more than 500 carefully selected, high impact projects that they can choose from. B1G1 is now growing exponentially in terms of its number of members and giving impacts they create together, making a real difference to lives of many worldwide. We can also look forward to all companies becoming social enterprises in 15 years' time, and come together to be a collaborative force for good. Paul is 28,771 days old at the time of this recording, no longer celebrating birthdays but marking every day we are alive on this planet. The opportunity that we have to capture moments daily during our time here deserves more than being measured in years. If we see only the worst in history, it destroys our capacity to take action. Yet there are so many points in history where people behaved magnificently, and inspiringly. Acknowledging these points can help us act (to do good and make a positive impact) in even small ways and we don't even have to wait for the future, but live for now, do things now, make our world a better place now, each in our own way. Businesses come alive with truly engaged employees and enthusiastic operations when they become social enterprises. Profit can be uninspiring for many in the corporate world, but creating global changes can truly energise and motivate leaders and employees greatly. More than 301 million giving impacts have been achieved by B1G1. This illustrates the growing impact of social enterprises. An impact can be a planted tree, a child provided with schooling, water provided to a community and anything that raises a smile. BEST MOMENTS ‘Whatever that business activity may be, they can be committed to doing good for someone or something, some place in the world, be it planting a tree, saving someone from sex trafficking, providing clean water or building a school, etc.' – Helen ‘Reality is that there's a lot of stuff going on. “To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic, it is based on the fact that human history brings a history of not only cruelty but also of compassion, of sacrifice, of courage and kindness.”' – Paul ‘Very often people wonder what kind of impact or difference they can make, just them. It's about our gathering together that creates that impact.' - Helen 'The government was doing a survey and the survey basically said ‘do you think we should offer tax incentives for social enterprises?' I'm sure the people doing the survey expected me to say yes. My response was that in 15 years we will ALL be social enterprises.' – Paul ‘Why wouldn't I be living the legacy everyday?' – Paul ‘Our lives would be greatly enriched if we did this and be driven by something much greater than ourselves.' – Helen GUEST INFO Paul Dunn is Chairman of B1G1 (BUY1GIVE1) which helps businesses embed giving right into the heart of everyday activities and makes business giving easy, effective and meaningful. Have you ever wanted to be the hero the world needs? Well, now you can. Because everyone can be a changemaker, no matter how big or small you feel your impact can be. Last year, thanks to our Become a Force for Good Event guests, together we were able to provide the following, just for turning up!
Host Helen Lee continues her discussion of a new style of business for a transformed world with an interview with Paul Dunn, Chairman of B1G1 (BUY1GIVE1) Business for Good, a global giving initiative that has grown into a global movement. B1G1 helps businesses embed giving right into the heart of everyday activities and makes business giving easy, effective and meaningful. It focuses on connecting small to medium sized businesses with more than 500 carefully selected high-impact giving projects. Paul is a four time TEDx speaker, winner of the Global Lifetime Achievement Award for Service to the Accounting Profession, entrepreneur, master presenter and keynote speaker. Known for building great businesses, he was also featured in Forbes, alongside Richard Branson in a 2014 feature on Disruptive Business Ideas That Worked. Helen and Paul discuss the origin of B1G1, the philosophy of world change through business and what he; Founder, CEO & his wife Masami Sato; his team and a growing number of members have achieved for the world. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul gets out of bed every morning to help business owners and their teams create more impact on our world and in their businesses than they ever could have imagined possible. “What if we were able to create a world where every time business was done, something great happened in the world?”, Masami asked Paul in 2007 to consider. "Imagine if every time someone bought a cup of coffee, a child in need got access to life-saving water? Or when an author sells a book, a tree gets planted?", Masami explained. This momentous conversation 15 years ago gave birth to their setting up B1G1 with a vision of life-changing impact being created every time a business sells a product or service. Today, we can go beyond being only profit and even purpose driven to being impact driven. We can also move from solving for problems to solving for potential, just as Nature does and Paul refers to, in this episode. What B1G1 does is let you look at micro impacts that have incredible outcomes. All of us at some point know that there is something more, but what we often don't know is how to achieve it. Rather than doing something big in the future, we can do something small right now, every day. This is the philosophy of B1G1. This is the power of small. Paul, Masami and their team run B1G1 from Singapore. Together with their members, they have amazingly created more than 301 million giving impacts to date. Both the number of members and impacts are growing exponentially as well. B1G1 members can choose from more than 500 high impact giving projects under the categories of education, environment, food, health, shelter, income generation, human rights, and life enhancement. Check out https://b1g1.com/ for more information and if you feel called to do so, become a member making your own impacts on the world today. You can select from 4 levels of membership. B1G1 has grown from being a business to being a movement. It is about creating a world that is full of giving by shifting the spirit of businesses to that of a giving one, thereby helping the entire organisation or team transform in the process. "We are all at our best when we are giving," as Paul points out. It allows for a specific transaction-based giving model to small and medium enterprises worldwide. Helen has created a global group online program called ‘Invincible You : The Hero's Journey' to support everyone in the world rise and thrive during these phenomenal and challenging times. It is based on the methodology she created more than two decades ago (honed and upgraded over the years), that has since impacted thousands of people worldwide from Chairmen and Presidents of conglomerates to children and the whole range in between. BEST MOMENTS ‘We were talking about the distinction between talking about things and actually doing things. So, chairmen are often thought about as thinking about things. And, by the way, it's very important for chairmen to do that.' – Paul ‘“The storyteller sets the vision, the values and the agenda for an entire generation yet to come.” (Steve Jobs, 1994). When I read that I realised that all of the things that we do are not about us, it's about something greater than us.' - Paul ‘All of a sudden, once you get that new understanding, what happens is you just see things that were there all the time but you never saw them before.' – Paul ‘I'd like to know what's the difference for you before B1G1 and after. Because it was life changing, right?' – Helen ‘If you ask me that now, I would add “to recognise that you can just create an enormous difference in the world by doing awesome things once you look at the world in a new way.” I would refer to that as you can become impact driven as opposed to purpose driven. When that happens you get what happened to me and that is you just become curiouser and curiouser and curiouser, and in that curiosity you continue to find just incredible realisations that you didn't have before.' – Paul 'The pandemic has taught us that we are all connected. It's no longer about me, it's about we. In episode #114 of Productivity Mastery, we welcome Masami Sato - a radiating and inspiring personality with a mission to help businesses around the world make a positive impact through their daily business activities. Masami Sato shared a lot with us, including:
Today's guest is Paul Dunn, a 4-time TEDx speaker, master storyteller and one of the most well-read people I know! He is a Senior Fellow in one of the World's Leading Think Tanks and consults to and mentors leading-edge businesses around the world. He was honoured as a Social Innovation Fellow in his new home of Singapore; something he shares with film-star and philanthropist Jet Li and Walmart Chairman, Rob Walton. He was one of the first 10 people in Hewlett Packard in Australia. He then created one of Australia's first computer companies and then The Results Corporation where he helped develop and grow 23,000 small and medium scale business enterprises. His programs are used by an estimated 226,000 companies around the world and he continues to push the boundaries. He featured in Forbes Magazine alongside Sir Richard Branson in a global piece on ‘disrupters' in business. He is the co-founder of B1G1: Business for Good, the history-making Global Giving Initiative that's already enabled businesses to create over 281 Million giving impacts globally. Paul shares an incredible story about something that happened involving him after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. It precipitated his meeting with Masami Sato that led to them co-founding B1G1, but it profoundly shifted his thinking on what he believed was the secret to success in business. He then tells the story of Masami Sato, who he was mentoring, sharing the idea that directly led to B1G1 starting, which has now led to a global movement that has created over 281 million impacts (as at May 2022). We talk about the idea of “possibilities” and Paul shares an insight from the book, Teeming, by Dr Woolley-Barker. One of the major learning points is that we need to understand that nature does not solve problems. Nature always looks for potential. An idea that perhaps humans can learn from. He shares his thinking on the two types of companies that exist: standard companies and standout companies, through the lens of legacy Another book he references is Cult Status by Tim Duggan and the idea that of seven things leaders can work on to gain cult status, number 1 is to define the impact you want to have. And define it in terms of the number of lives that you will touch. Paul shares a rousing quote from Steve Jobs about how powerful the storyteller is. It's a quote that makes you really think about the potency of storytelling for generations to come. For those who don't know B1G1, Paul explains how it works and the profound impact it creates for everyone involved. Get in touch with Paul... https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulb1g1/ https://b1g1.com
Masami Sato is one of the coolest people you're likely to meet out there. Seldom in my life have I had a conversation where I found myself so whole-heartedly agreeing with everything that was said. Masami has used her extensive life experience to build and improve a number of businesses, bringing care and humanity to everything she's touched. 14 years ago, she got the brilliant idea to find a way to inject giving into EVERY company out there, creating here company B1G1. Through it, she makes it painfully easy for companies to do good, without drastically changing what they've been doing. She's facilitated hundreds of millions in giving around the world and been recognized by major media and more. All episodes: beattheoftenpath.com Watch this episode on YouTube

We're probably all familiar with the term “Buy 1, Get 1,” but what about “Buy 1, Give 1”? B1G1 founder Masami Sato shares what inspired her to create this global giving initiative and social enterprise by partnering with businesses all over the world and helping them create an impact through their projects. Thirteen years later and as of this interview, B1G1 has already partnered with 3,000 businesses and created 220 million impacts (and counting)! While traveling the world and being exposed to different situations, Masami already felt the inkling to want to be part of the solution to many of the problems she encountered. But, it was not until she had her first child that she realized she really wanted to do something to help. And so, she opened up a food business. Years later, it dawned on her that instead of being afraid to start something big, she could start doing small things daily. Then, B1G1 was created. Initially selling one meal for every meal packet they sold, she decided she wanted to help other businesses make an impact as well and turned B1G1 into a social enterprise. Through the NGOs they work with, they are able to identify the issues people face as well as the solutions or high impact projects that can be done to address these issues.Though money is a common way of measuring impact, in B1G1, they measure impact through impact, habit, and connection as well as the length of time people have access to resources and, of course, they make sure their impact is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. Speaking of money, they actually bootstrapped the company in its early days, but thankfully, they now get to enjoy doing what they are doing and focus on helping people and businesses. There are two sides to B1G1, the company side, which entails them being listed as a B Corp, and the charity side, through which they find partners, list their projects, and hand out contributions. And in order to be sustainable, they utilize a business membership model or subscription-based model that their members pay a monthly fee for. Now, what kind of businesses work with B1G1? Well, they partner with big and small businesses alike, and Masami also shares how they vet the businesses that would like to partner with them and, once they've set up a partnership, how they help each other out.Though the pandemic brought about new challenges, luckily, the fourth quarter of 2020 was actually record-breaking for them. And so, with trials and tribulations come victories as well. This is why Masami reminds us to appreciate the journey and not to focus too much on the destination. In 10 years, Masami is optimistically ambitious and hopes that B1G1 partners with 1 million businesses.Masami's key lessons and quotes from this episode were:“What if instead of trying to do something big in the future one day, what if we did something small but did it every day?” (7:17)“In B1G1, we focus on three things that we think can be integrated in [the] business-giving space, which is impact, habit, and connection.” (15:14)“As a social enterprise, the model itself is that our mission is really about transforming how businesses do what they do. And as a result, we want to inspire all those businesses to feel that what they are doing is actually really meaningful and important in the world, so they add value to their customers and clients through what they are doing already.” (19:40)“When we tap into that feeling of why they are doing what they are doing and then introduce B1G1 as a way for them to create their legacy and also to make their business much more meaningful, and purposeful, and rewarding for them as well as for their team if they have other teSupport the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/impacthustlers)

Care More Be Better: Social Impact, Sustainability + Regeneration Now
Show Notes:In this episode, Corinna Bellizzi connects with Masami Sato, founder of B1G1 (Buy One, Give One) a not-for-profit organization that matches companies of all sizes with NGO's they've vetted, developing programs that give 100% of the allocated funds to the charity in question. They talk about Masami's life journey, and how as she traveled the world, she noticed the inequities in different countries, and how those with so little to give often gave the most. This left an indelible mark in her perspective, especially as she became a mom, and resulted in her founding B1G1 in 2007 to propel more positive action into the world. Today, this novel organization serves over 3,000 companies around the globe from high-end New York City restaurants to your favorite local business. About Our Guest - Masami Sato:Masami has authored four books including, ‘JOY - The gift of acceptance, trust and love', ‘GIVING BUSINESS – Creating the maximum impact in the meaning-driven world' and ‘Better Business, Better Life, Better World'. Masami's career has followed her diverse talent and skills having been a teacher, translator, natural food chef and farmer, author, award-winning entrepreneur and mother of two teenagers. She is a two-time TEDx speaker and is frequently invited to international events, podcasts and interviews. In our latest Conversation of Change podcast, we've got Masami Sato, who is the co-founder of B1G1 (@buy1give1), a social enterprise in Singapore and Non-Profit Organisation in the US. They help SMEs achieve more social impact through implementing giving activities. “Imagine every time you had a cup of coffee someone has access to life saving water; or every time someone reads a book, a tree gets planted. This is the world of B1G1.”
In this episode of the Social Lights Podcast, podcast host and Social Mediology founder Kate vanderVoort chats with Paul Dunn, the co-founder of accountants for good and B1G1 business for good. About Paul Paul is a four-time TEDx speaker. He is a senior fellow in one of the world's leading think tanks and consults with the mentors of cutting-edge businesses around the world. He was honoured as a social innovation fellow in his new home of Singapore, something he shares with film star and philanthropist Jet Li and Walmart chairman, Rob Walton. He was one of the first 10 people in Hewlett Packard in Australia. He then created one of Australia's first computer companies, and then the Results Corporation, where he helped develop and grow 23,000 small and medium scale business enterprises. His programs are used by an estimated 226,000 companies around the world, and he continues to push the boundaries. He is featured in Forbes Magazine alongside Sir Richard Branson in a global piece on disrupters in business. He is the co-founder of accountants for good and B1G1 business for good, the global giving in initiative. B1G1 has already enabled businesses to create over 220 million good giving impacts globally. BIG IDEA 1 “Entrepreneurs, in particular, do things that allow them to make more impact, so it becomes this lovely flywheel that is based on impact” (03:34) Paul says that there are three key ideals that can impact your sense of direction. The first one is having some sort of North Star, something that drives you, that is bigger than yourself and that is the key. The second thing is to understand something that we have always known and is that we are all connected, we've always been connected, but we realize it now. Finally, the third one is asking yourself the right question. Was that the right track? to be able to know what the best for you and your business is. He explains that in B1G1 they are playing a significant part in that, in terms of making it easier than ever before for entrepreneurs to do it and to add meaning and purpose to what they do. As a business leader, once you get that big North Star, which involves meaning and purpose, it is not about you anymore, it's about something bigger than you and that will be your guide. BIG IDEA 2 “Imagine every time you buy a cup a coffee, a child gets access to life-saving clean water” (12:32) Paul explains how B1G1 was created and that when he was mentoring his now co-founder Masami Sato, she approached him one day with a brilliant business idea. She told him: “I want you to imagine a world where every time business is done, something great happens in our world”. This idea excited him, and he wanted to know more about it, “you want to buy a TV because you want a better or bigger picture, imagine how would it be if, when you did that, someone who could not see got the gift of sight”. At that moment he realised that this was the best idea he ever heard in his life, so he asked her if he could keep mentoring her for the rest of her life! He clarifies that sometimes people start saying that they are lost, what he recommends to people is to look outside, look at some of the issues that you, as an entrepreneur could have an impact on. It is finding a way to hook your business onto those ideals. This also translates to potential customers, investors or team members who hear what you are doing, and then they start saying I want to be part of that as well. The larger the purpose the more people are likely to come on board, the more likely your business is to be a magnet for talented individuals. The existing members or stakeholders within your business are more likely to be engaged and involved. It becomes this beautiful sort of virtual cycle, where the people you are influencing getter better and as result so does the world we live in. BIG IDEA 3 “Three words that are central.” (35:57) Paul explains that the way they create a community...

On today's edition of The Aid Station I talk to one of the most inspiring people I know, Masami Sato, in Singapore. Masami is the Founder of an amazing organisation called B1G1 which has created over 200million giving impacts with its focus on "Business for Good". Masami shares the inspirational story of how she founded B1G1 and the incredible "Power of Small" - making giving an integral part of our daily lives with small contributions instead of waiting until we can afford to make a bigger contribution. A theme that punctuates the conversation is that of gratitude. Appreciation for the small things and what we already have which also includes the opportunity that Covid-19 has given for Masami to run more regularly in beautiful Singapore. One of the key focuses has been staying connected to the over 400 worthy B1G1 causes in 34 countries which included speaking to every one of them to see what help they needed. One of the outcomes was a wonderful story about a charity in Kenya making face-masks. Listen for Masami's thoughts on leadership which she believes doesn't necessarily need to come from high profile people. Paul Dunn is a widely respected business leader and four-time TEDx speaker. He was one of the original employees of Hewlett-Packard’s Australian division and went on to found a marketing firm that has assisted the growth of countless businesses. He is a disruptor both in business and in generosity, with the non-profit organization he chairs, B1G1 (Buy One Get One), enabling corporations to easily give back right into their business structures, creating over 164 million giving impacts to date. In this episode, Paul discusses the tragedy that spurred him to donate on the spot, why so many companies are hesitant to give back, and his belief in “the power of small.” Show Notes: How did Paul get to where he is? Not through a Joseph Campbell’s “hero’s story”but thanks to incredible luck. He was headhunted from an early age and took inspiration from Silicon Valley culture. Frequently worked with accountants and developed a unique perspective on the profession despite not being part of it. Met a man named Pastor Silva, who related his experience with the 2004 Indian ocean tsunami that left his students orphaned and homeless. Was inspired to donate to the man and cover the children’s housing and needs. Realized in that moment that his life was no longer merely about business but giving value to the people he worked with. Believes it’s every businessperson obligation to be generous and help out. Encounter with a deputy chef who had her own By One Give One program pushed him farther down the path to founding B1G1. What does Paul think is a key element of any business or organization? To have systems that delight and inspire, pushing others to contribute and be the best selves they can be. What is “the power of small”? When you forge connections not with your product but with the outcomes your product can provide to your users. What was the most challenging part of starting and growing B1G1? Gaining the cooperation of organizations and companies to assist with this initiative. Finding a way for B1G1 to be sustainable in and of itself. Why does Paul think so few businesses factor giving back into their business models? The vast majority of businesses are typically smaller scale, and so the money they could give away is instead used to sustain themselves. B1G1 is designed to work with smaller business models like these; the challenge is gaining traction and attention. Businesses owners tend to also become obsessed with legacy and giving away eventually rather than in the moment; Paul wants them to “live” a legacy rather than “leave” one. What’s one story involving B1G1 has especially affected Paul? The RIO Group, which focuses on recruitment, worked with local petrol companies in Australia to produce non-sniffable gasoline, reducing the amount of recreational gasoline sniffing by 94%. Who has been the most impactful person in Paul’s journey to do well and achieve financial success? Masami Sato. Who has been the most impactful person in Paul’s drive to do good? Once again, Masami Sato. When Paul is having a bad day, what does he do to get himself out of his funk? Reads through his gratitude journal to remember what he’s grateful for. What book does Paul recommend to those seeking a more successful path in life? https://charlesduhigg.com/the-power-of-habit/ (The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg) https://thestoryoftelling.com/books/ (Meaningful by Bernadette Jiwa) What is the best piece of advice related to happiness Paul has for our listeners?
