This week we draft a team of the best (and worst) games of 2014 to see what sort of mess we can come up with! While it looks as though 2023 will go down as one of the strongest years for video games in recent memory (Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom... Golum) we weren't always so lucky. While it's tough to pin down an objective WORST year in video game history, we've scoured the releases of the past 30 or so years to try to find the one with the weakest releases. That year? 2014.Sure, it had some strong releases, but it also had a whole lot of duds, and more than a few cases where a great game was launched on a less-than-ideal console. Plus: our thoughts on The Case of the Golden Idol DLC (The Lemurian Vampire) and the recent Microsoft Leaks!Watch our gameplay segments and full video episodes over on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/theretrogradepodcastJoin us on Twitter: @RetrogradePod, @RetrogradeAndy, @RetrogradeMikeyTikTok: @RetrogradePodOr on Instagram: @theretrogradepodcast Or visit our website at www.theretrogradepod.com/Questions, Comments, and business inquiries can be sent to theretrogradepodcast@gmail.comShow Notes: https://www.theretrogradepod.com/episodes/worst-year-in-gaming-history-2014

OBS.

Hello, greetings, bonjour, what's happening. It's Friday. What does that mean? Not much to me. I stopped looking forward to weekends (and bank holidays) a long time ago. Maybe if I was working an ordinary job, I'd be chomping at the bit, right now. But I'm not, but if you are, sick. I'm cool, though.Speaking of jobs, this week's offering is another story from Make Your Own Bed and Hope for the Best. Based on when I worked at HMV at Gatwick Airport. I mentioned last week, that I'd hit a block with this show. I started writing the third part this week but didn't get very far. I'm still very much in that this isn't working phase. I'm loosing heart but will kick-on.I've got a habit of getting stuck into something and then just letting it go. Even when it's quite far down the line. I've done t so many times. I was learning to drive, when I was around 18. Got as far as gearing up to take the test, missed a couple of lessons then just, sort of, gradually, stopped. It's like I go numb to any feelings about it – then sometime later, I get a delayed onslaught of negativity. These are things I've noticed happening over time. So now, I'm trying to read the signs early on, so I can counteract it, which normally involves just keeping it going, even it's in tiny amounts. A mate of mine, Physics B, once told me about this Jerry Seinfeld strategy, of just viewing it all as a chain; as long as you're doing something each day, you're keeping the chain going.  I'm having mixed results.Whilst my gym visits have fallen by the wayside, at least I can say I've kept Lager Time going (and I'm keeping the show going) It's been over six months, now and give or take a few weeks, I've been consistent with it. So well done me and large up all of you who have read, or listened, or shared; thankyou. For lots of us that do this kind of thing; freelance creatives or whatever, COVID cancelled loads of our work and forced a lot of us to re-think what we're doing. I was no exception. With technology, I'm quite often slow to adapt; rarely short of ideas but know-how and execution lags why behind, and I often loose heart because of it. Despite that, I made this list, around April 2020 of things I thought I could do to grow and adapt; I caled it the Level-Up list. The end-point was for me to be able to produce by own content: video's, music, audio, images, books etc.  So I took a bunch of Udemy courses and tried to learn a few things. If you're familiar with my work about education, or even the stuff I've been sharing on here, then you may realise how un-academic I am.It's a journey I'm still on and it's frustrating, as with lots of it, like video, I'm still very much at the beginner stage and I do lose heart, from time-to-time. It's taking a long time to get where I want to go but I am making progress; just very slowly. I've got the Substack up and running, a self-produced music EP, two-thirds recorded, I'm not far off filming a couple of simple point-and-shoot poetry videos and I'm getting better at recording audio. Tortoise and the hare, mate.Speaking of levelling-up, I made this little introduction to the audio, what do you think? It's another step towards stepping-up. Onwards and upwards. Well, that's the ideal trajectory.  As per above, it's thinking about moving onward and upwards, move onwards with excitement, hit an obstacle, fall over, lie on the ground for hours full of self-loathing, days, weeks, then get back up, re-trace my steps, start again, overcome said hurdle, get excited again, find another hurdle, rinse, wash, repeat. Enjoy the story. As ever, if you've listened or read and got this far, thankyou. If you like it, give it a subscribe. Enjoy the bank holiday, same time next week?HMV Despite the redundancy and loosing the apprenticeship: getting the Golum eyes and spanking most of the payout dough on clothes and booze, being skint, unemployed, having to go through the humiliation of signing-on, not hearing back from most jobs, flopping the few job interviews that I had, no qualifications, feeling generally quite useless and that I had no tangible skills to offer anyone and no girlfriend to speak of, life was alright. Honestly. I had a roof, a good family, a few mates and I had music.I was enjoying MCing more and more, I loved writing lyrics and raping them over beats and had started running drum and bass and garage nights in this local club in Horley, called the Liquid Lounge, with my mate Mick from college, where I'd MC. We had no idea what we were doing but we did it anyway. The owner of the club was looking for a regular DJ, so I got my brothers mate, Dean to come down with his mate Nigel, as they were doing a lot of weddings and parties back then.Dean worked at HMV in Gatwick, I mentioned I was looking for a job, they had a job going, so through a blatant case of nepotism and crony capitalism, I landed myself a job there. For a retail shop, the money was good, and I cashed in on the 30% discount; got the Gollum eyes trebling my music collection, within weeks. I'd also started to read books and the discount extended to waterstones, it was a touch and I remember buying my first Michal Moore book there. I was working with people my own age, with similar interests, and it was music. I felt like I'd landed on my feet.Pretty much everyone in my family had worked at the airport at some point. I could walk there from home, which was handy for those 5am starts when transport was limited. Pretty grim in the winter though, dark and cold outside, walking down that infamous alleyway where the street light didn't work, so it was pitch black, only to arrive in the airport like you'd never left, like it never slept.Super bright strip lights hurting my eyes, air-con choking my lungs, constant announcements, brutal early shifts and killer lates, stomach aches from too much caffeine and night and day cells in constant conflict, as I my body clock was always confused. The manager was a wanker too, he made passive aggression into an artform, always spoke to me like I was thick. But aside from that I liked it. I was working with music. All that retail customer service stuff was bollox but at least I was doing something where I had a little bit of knowledge that I could contribute. I enjoyed recommending things to customers and I was learning lots, new artsts, old bands, making mates and having a laugh. The airport employed thousands of people and you'd get friendly with the other staff there. Other retail bods, security, baggie handling. Even the old Bill with their machine guns. You could get things at the airport, loads of little under the counter deals were going on. We'd call it the North terminal crime syndicate, got myself a pair of Nikes one time for £20 cash. Lots of the local bars would run airport nights, you'd flash your pass and get discounted drinks, it was sick.I was in charge of the dance-music section and felt especially proud when I organised it into subgenres: deep-house, funky-house, tech-house, drum and bass, garage, breakbeat, big beat and would get stumped by curve balls like the Prodigy and the Chemical brothers.  What section do I put them in. I got to order stuff, I took pride in it. Sometimes I'd have to open and close the shop and cash up the tills and I liked the responsibility. Of course I made a few mistakes and got in trouble once or twice but I still preferred it to Zepher.I'd started this music promotion course down in Brighton, which I got on by chance, just being in a record shop one day when there the course leaders were giving out flyers. I was too old but they let me join in, I just did'nt get the qualification. We were working on putting an event on at the Ocean rooms, which was big club back then. I'd work the early shifts without a break, burn it over to the station and get a train down there and make it just in time for the afternoon session. And in-between all of that, minus the boozing and smoking, trips to clubs in London andand Brighton, and a surprise FA Cup Final for Millwall, I was still writing lots of lyrics. And Working life was alright. But deep down I knew it couldn't last. The money was good and I was becoming comfortable, which I'd never felt before but I knew that it was dangerous. The airport was full of older-bods who had potential but never amounted to much. They swapped that potential for resentment and would sit in the pubs boring the rest of us to death about how they could've made it, in whatever capacity. I had this gut feeling that I'd have to leave the area. I didn't know how, why or what I'd do, I just knew. This is a public episode. Before we get to the show, here are a couple announcements Join our facebook group! The link is https://www.facebook.com/groups/thehardthingpodcast Help us raise $1,000 for the non profit O.U.R. by going to https://www.gofundme.com/f/overcoming-average Hello friends. As always, we are setting out on our hero's journey. You, the hero, will be challenged in physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual ways. Sometimes you'll be challenged in many aspects at one time. I believe today is one of those days. Jordan Peterson, the famed psychologist, has studied many stories looking for meaning as it applies to psychology. He proposes that each “hero” must delve into hell to conquer the beast, only to then return to the world bearing the fruits of their conquest.   I was speaking with some friends recently, and a friend clued me in on some serious depth within the story “The Hobbit”. For the uninitiated, “The Hobbit” is a tale about a hobbit (or halfling) who is called on a long adventure through the mysterious workings of an aged wizard and a troop of dwarves. This adventure takes the traveling band through dark forests, the clutches of trolls, the webs of giant spiders, the dark caves of goblins and finally to a dragon's lair. My friend illuminated my understanding when he explained that Bilbo, the hobbit, eventually finds himself in a very deep dark hole, having 1v1 faceoff versus a nightmare, aka Golum. Here's what I never realized before though, Golum represents everything wrong with Bilbo, the hero. Golum once was a hobbit, but was corrupted by an evil force.  Bilbo in essence plunges to the darkest and deepest depths of the story, only to find himself face to face with his own nightmare: himself, amplified to the worst aspects of his nature character. Bilbo eventually bests his nightmare, but doesn't vanquish it. This in turn allows the nightmare to return for his descendants, but that should be left for another episode. My point is this. During this month, you and I will plunge to our deepest darkest caves within ourselves and find ourselves 1v1 versus our nightmares. We are going to be talking about our own insecurities. This will challenge yourself emotionally and spiritually. I believe it's important to identify, assess, and overcome our insecurities precisely because that's what our minds and bodies are telling us to do. Often, these insecurities come from parts of ourselves we aren't comfortable with, parts that we try to hide. Yet, they still manifest themselves in our actions. Almost like our insecurities are piles of slime and instead of trying to clean them up and find the source, we just box them up in wooden crates. Eventually the slime leaks through and we wonder what happened. Today, we are going to work on identifying. Today we look for the source of the slime. In my experience, there are a handful of ways that insecurity manifests itself. These are general terms and I might miss one. If I am, please reach out and let me know what you think. Freeze Our first manifestation of insecurity is a general freezing. This can look like paralysis or stagnation where we don't change all that much. This is a neutral way of living that leads to doing nothing rather than making a choice. You can see this most often in people who don't like to make decisions. They instead choose to let the decisions pass, making a decision by choosing to do nothing.  Fight The second manifestation is the fight response. Here we are overcompensating, acting maybe like an animal backed into a corner. This could show up as over-agression, or even just forced positivity. While the freezers don't make decisions, the fighters often make aggressively positive decisions without actually weighing the choices. Sometimes this looks like “keeping up with the...

Who doesn't love Lord of The Rings? It was that epic story that birthed a genre. I've been using the Walk To Mordor app and a pedometer to re-tract Frodo and Sam's legendary journey from Hobbiton to Mordor. As I go, I'm also revisiting the movies and the books. In today's podcast, we talk about the beginning of the story, up until Buckleberry Ferry. So grab some lembas bread and let's go on an adventure! ----more---- Transcript Welcome to Nerd Heaven. I’m Adam David Collings, the author of Jewel of the Stars. And I am a nerd This is episode 22 of the podcast.   Today is the first installment of my Lord of The Rings, Read, Walk and Watch series. If you’ve been following my content anywhere, you’re most likely aware that I’ve been doing a walk to mordor challenge.    Using a pedometer, and an app on my phone called Walk to Mordor, I enter the distance I’ve walked at the end of each day, and the app tells me how far along the legendary journey from the Shire to Mordor I have travelled. There are lots of milestones along the way.   From time to time, I’ll be doing one of these episodes where I dig into the story of Lord of The Rings, discussing it as far where I’ve walked, drawing from both the books and the movies.   I’m not really going to be comparing the book and movie, I’m just going to be drawing from both.   In this installment, I’ll be talking about the beginning of the story, up and until Buckleberry Ferry Lord of the Rings Part 1 The Fellowship Of The Ring was written by J.R.R Tokkien. It was first published in 1954. The movie was written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson. It was directed by Peter Jackson And first released in cinemas on the 19th of December 2001.   The description on IMDB reads A meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.   So. Let’s go on an adventure.   My first experience with Lord of The Rings was seeing Fellowship of the Ring at the cinema. I hadn’t read the book prior to this, and was blown away by the epic scope of the story.   So I’m not a hard-core lifelong Tolkien fan. There are many people who cold run rings around me in terms of their knowledge of the lore of Lore of The Rings. So I’m not doing this as an expert, just a nerd geeking out of a story that I think we can all agree is pretty darn awesome.   Both the book and the movie start off giving us backstory and setup, but they do it in very different ways. The prologue to the novel reads somewhat like a non-fiction book written in universe. No book would ever be published today if it began this way, but there is a certain old-fashion charm to this prologue.   While the book focuses on the smaller details, the history of hobbits, and how Bilbo came to have the ring, the movie delves right back to the creation of the ring and the first battle with Sauron. Important aspects of the world that the books keep a mystery for now.   I think both were the correct choices for the given medium. See, I said the point of this wasn’t to compare the two, but given the different ways they start, it’s kind of hard not to.   This opening sequence for the movie sets up the stakes from the beginning. We know how powerful, and how dangerous this ring is. So when it comes into Frodo’s possession, we already fear for him. These sequences were great to watch. This movie was pretty revolutionary in it’s use of CGI to create huge armies. It was the feat for the eyes when it first came out, and is still impressive today, although no longer unique.   I like the sense of wonder you get as history become legend and legend became myth over 2 and a half thousand years.   The extended version of the movie actually follows the prologue of the book more closely. Narrated by Bilbo. I only saw the extended version about a year ago, so it’s still pretty new and exciting to me.   The set for Hobbiton is awesome. I’ve always loved it. You can’t watch this and not just want to be transported there. And of course the music! It fits the visuals so well and has got to be one of the most memorable pieces of movie music ever. I love it.   The new scene where Bilbo has a panic attack because he can’t find the ring is a nice touch. IT shows the addictive powers that it has over those it owns.   Bilbo and Frodo kind of represent two different responses to the amazing World Tolkien created. Bilbo is tired of living in the idyylic shire. He wants to go and travel, to experience advanture again. Frodo also has some interest in adventure, but he is still in love with the shire. And who wouldn’t be? I can identify with both of them. I’d want to go and see the whole of Middle Earth. But I’d want to know the Shire is still there to return to. If there’s one thing the story shows us at the beginning, it’s that life in the shire is very very good.   One of the best things about being a hobbit would be how much they love food. They also like drinking beer and smoking pipe weed, neither of which interest me, but I loooove food.   Bilbo has some genuine regret about leaving Frodo behind. He’s the only family that Bilbo actually likes.   Biblo’s behaviour regarding the ring stimulates Gandalf’s suspicions straight away. He doesn’t know the full story, but there’s definitely something off about it.   The ring hadn’t been used in decades. When Bilbo uses it to escape, he doesn’t seem to suffer any effects. No scary flaming eye staring at him. But that moment of usage is probably what first gets Sauron’s attention. The ring calls out to him after all these years. Now he must retrieve it. And so, Golumn is captured and tortured.   I like the scene in the movie where Gandalf is researching the ring. I know it’s just him reading to himself, but it adds a real sense of history.   Life continues as it always has back in the shire. They eat, they dance, they sing. It’s a truly joyful moment when we see them in the pub. And then Gandalf shows up to share what he has learned with Frodo. For that one moment, when Frodo says there is no text, I think Gandalf thinks maybe, just maybe he was wrong. But when Frodo says the Elvish writing has appeared, his face just dropped.   So this trinket that Bilbo passed on to Frodo is the one ring. Such a significant and ancient thing. While both Frodo and Galdalf must be feeling a lot of fear and dread in this moment, there’s got to also be a profound sense of wonder that they’d be feeling as well. I know I would. Which, I suppose, is a problem, because it’s just another thing that makes the ring more enticing.   This discovery about the ring comes in parallel with Gandalf learning of the return of Sauron and the regathering of forces at Mordor. Even the hobbits are talking. They know something is brewing in the wider world.   We learn here that the ring is basically sentient. It has a consciousness. It thinks. It has desires. This is because Sauron poured part of himself into the ring. It’s like a piece of his consciousness possessing the inanimate object. Without that, this is just a piece of gold like any other.   When Frodo learns the truth about the ring, his first impulse is to hide it. It’s actually impressive how quickly he formulates a good plan. “Nobody knows it’s here. We just bury it and never speak of it again.” That’s a good plan, and it could have worked, maybe for thousands more years. Except that it’s too late. Because of Golum. Sauron got to Gollum first and has told him exactly where to find the ring. Shire. Baggins. That will take the enemy literally to Frodo’s front door.   This is the point in the book where we get an interesting discussion about mercy, a discussion that happens much later in the movie. Frodo wishes that Bilbo had just killed Gollum back when he found the ring. If he had, their problems would be over. They could hide the ring and Sauron would probably never find it. It actually comes across a little callous, just how quick Frodo is to wish death upon another, even a creature as wretched as Gollum.   Specifically, Frodo says “It’s a pity that Bilbo did not stab that vile creature , when he had the chance.” And Gandalf replies “Pity? It was pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and mercy: not to strike without need. And he has been well rewarded, Frodo. Be sure, that he took so little hurt from the evil, and escaped in the end, because he began his ownership of the ring with pity.” Frodo admits he has no pity for Gollum, and that it is because of his fear. And isn’t that so true of fear, and the things attitudes it leads to. He says Gollum deserves death. “Deserves it,” Gandalf says. “I dare say he does. Many that live deserve death . And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death and judgement  For even the very wise cannot see all ends. I have not much hope that Gollum can be cured before he dies, but there is a chance of it. And he is bound up with the fate of the ring. My heart tells me that he has some part to play yet,  for good or ill, before the end; and when that comes, the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.” I really like this conversation. As for myself, I value things like mercy and compassion, so I love what Gandalf says.   At this point, Frodo just wants to give the ring to Gandalf. He doesn’t want any part in it. And Gandalf immediately refuses. It is far too great a temptation for him. The ring has great power, and if he possessed it, he would want to use that power for good. But the ring would work great evil through him.  This isn’t just a question of power corrupting, something I don’t take as a given. The ring itself is evil. It has its own will. So the ring doesn’t just represent neutral power. To me, the ring has always been a pretty strong representation of temptation and sin. This is seen thematically through the whole story.   Gandalf doesn’t believe he has the necessary willpower to resist that temptation when it comes, and he is very wise to recognise that, so he chooses to excercise that willpower now, and refuse the ring. Better never to possess it.   But what does that say about Frodo? He wants Frodo to keep it. He worries that it will be a great burden to Frodo, of course, but I think he recognises a moral strength in Frodo that most lack, including himself.   And then they realise that Sam was outside the window, and we get that awesome amusing line “I ‘aint been dropping no eaves.” I love that line. It’s not some witty one-liner, it’s just a statement that comes out of a genuine simple misunderstanding.   Gandalf warns Frodo to never put the ring on. It’s use will draw the attention of Sauron’s servents. It wants to be found. And that’s chilling. Anyway, we’ll see how that goes in the future.   And so, here is where my walk actually begins. Frodo and Sam leave Bag End. That’s the starting point on my walk to Mordor app. It’s taken this long just to get to the starting point. But it’s been well worth it.   So within less than a page, we hit my very first milestone. Tookland. It’s just a sentance they says they passed through tookland. This is where Pippin’s family are from.   From here on, the order of events is a little different between the movie and the book, but they both follow the same points. My Walk to Mordor app obviously follows the book.   As they’re walking through a paddock, Sam stops. And he says “This is it. If I take one more step, it’ll be the furthest from home I’ve ever been.” I like this recognition of the significance of this moment. It’s not an expression of fear, or anxiety, about being so far from home. It’s simply an acknowledgement of something that feels significant to Sam. I understand this. I went on my first cruise a few years ago. I was 39 at the time, and I’d never been outside of Australia. This would be my very first time setting foot in another country. I felt like Neil Armstrong. I remember that morning at our first port, Noumea, the capital city of New Caledonia. I stepped slowly down the gangway toward the soil of another nation. I say soil, but it was actually concrete. It was a dreary industrial port, but that wasn’t the point. This was a significant moment for me. Unfortunately, the staff were hurrying us on to get a photo, so I didn’t really get to stop and really take in that moment, savour it, like Sam is doing here.   Even before Saruman is revealed to be evil, there are hints. Isenguard looks very dark and creepy. Sauramon looks at Sauron, and his armies, and he can find no logical way to defeat him. Faced with what he believes is inevitable defeat, he believes the only option left is to join Sauron, because it is impossible to oppose him. Gandalf accuses Saruman of abandoning reason for madness. But it could be argued that Sauramon’s choice here is governed by pure reason. Cold unfeeling logic. Absolute pragmatism. Gandalf has one thing that Saruman lacks. Faith. That there are forces in this world other than the forces of evil, that even in the face of seemingly impossible odds, there is still reason to hope. That even a hobbit, could, in fact, oppose the will of Sauron. It’s illogical. It doesn’t add up mathematically.  But choosing faith is a preferable option to him than giving in to the evil. And I really love that about Gandalf. Also, I gotta say, what was Tolkien thinking, naming Sauron and Saruman such similar names. And given that Saruman  ends up working for Sauron. That’s really on the nose. One of the first things a modern author is taught is not to give characters names that will get confused with one another. Try not to even have two main characters whose name starts with the same letter.   Then we reach my second milestone, the encounter with the black rider. The movie does an especially good job of this. It’s so creepy. Frodo senses something off about the black rider before he even appears. He is, of course, a ring wraith. It’s such a tense moment as it stops near the tree they’re hiding under and sniffs. Frodo is really tempted to use the ring to hide. Even though Gandalf warned him not to. It takes Sam to keep him from doing it. If he’d put it on, it would have all been over. The rider would have sensed the ring more strongly and kill them then and there.   My next walking milestone is a meeting with the elves at the 65 km mark. That’s a fair chunk of walking. And Frodo still hasn’t even left the borders of the shire. At this point in the book, Frodo is getting worried about Gandalf, who was supposed to show up for his farewell party, but hasn’t been heard from. In the movie, the encounter with the elves is brief, Frodo and Sam spy them in the distance but don’t actually make contact. They are already aware that the elves are heading to the harbour, leaving middle earth forever. This makes me think of, and is very likely the inspiration for, the first ones from Babylon 5, going beyond the rim and leaving our galaxy. It’s a powerful trope. It’s like all the magic is leaving the world. Sam says it makes him feel sad. I get that. Sheridan expressed a similar feeling in Babylon 5. Delenn’s response was “now we make our own magic.”   The last milestone I’ll talk about in this episode is Farmer Maggot’s field.   In the movie, Farmer Maggot’s field is where they finally meet up with Merry and Pippin. Keep in mind that this is further than Sam has ever been from home. Keep in mind, they’ve travelled two nights and at least one and a half days. My Walk to Mordor app says it’s 98 km from Bag End. But they find Merry and Pippin casually here stealing crops. It doesn’t quite add up. Have those two travelled two days and slept under the stars two nights just to come here and steal some carrots? It sounds like they do this almost every week.   By the way, it says a lot about hobbits that they so love raw vegetables they rebellious young hobbits would steal vegetables with such glee. It’s not just junk food that they take delight in. They love their vegies too.   Of course, in the book, they go and have a drink with farmer maggot. The stealing of crops is just part of Frodo’s childhood backstory.   The main point of all of these encounters seems to be to remind us that the black riders are dangerous and to re-emphasise that they are actively searching for Frodo.   But there’s a little moment I like when Frodo says “I’ve been afraid of you and your dogs for over 30 years. It’s a pity as I have missed out on a good friend.”   And that’s so true, isn’t it. Fear can make us miss out on all sorts of things, including friendships with people who may not be at all as we feared them to be.   Also, I’d like to point out that while Frodo, Sam, and Pippin got to ride all the way to the ferry in Maggot’s wagon, I had to walk all that way!   Anyway, that brings us to the fifth milestone on my journey. Buckleberry Ferry. So I’m going to leave it here for this time. It’s been a fun journey so far and there is plenty more to come.   Next time I do a Lord of the Rings Read, Walk and Watch, we’ll meet Tom Bombadil.  Until then, happy walking. Feel free to add me as a friend on the Walk To Mordor app, if you’re using it. And I’ll see you somewhere in Middle Earth. Next time I do a Lord of the Rings Read, Walk and Watch, we’ll meet Tom Bombadil.    Feel free to add me as a friend on the Walk To Mordor app, if you’re using it.   Next time on Nerd Heaven, in two weeks time, I’ll be talking about Star Trek Generations, that epic meeting between captains Jean-Luc Picard and James T. Kirk. I’ve got plenty to say about the movie, so I hope you’ll join me.   Until then,  Live Long and Prosper.   Make it so.

The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-312 – Randy Pierce – Mountains, Dogs and Inspiration (Audio: link) [audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4312.mp3] Link epi4312.mp3 Intro Bumper: Chris Russell, a man barely alive…Heh, heh.  Yes I am old enough to have watched the 6 million dollar man when it premiered in 1977.   Well Hello my friends.  Welcome to Episode 4-312 of the RunRunLive Podcast.  This is Chris, your host, and I'm glad to see you.  Won't you come in, grab a towel and sit with me for a bit while you cool down from your exertions of the week? It's been a busy spring for me.  At the end of April I capped a worthy training cycle by running my 17th Boston Marathon.  6 Days later I fulfilled my role as titular figurehead (i.e. Race Director) at the 24th annual Groton Road Race.  Last week I spent a couple days in the hospital to have a special bionic powers installed.   I prefer to think of it as an upgrade rather than a patch.  They didn't fix a bug in my heart, they upgraded me to Chris 3.0.  Now I've got super powers, similar to Peter Parker, or Steve Austin.   This week I rolled out to Phoenix at the crack of dawn Monday for a conference, bopped over to Denver to meet a guy for dinner last night and grabbed the Red Eye back to Boston.  (It was on the way).  As I write this I realize how ridiculously busy that sounds, and I was a bit tired this week, but it's not unusual for me, as you know by now, I run pretty fast in my life, so to speak.  There's nothing here that coffee, running, meditation and denial can't fix.  I don't want to make this about me, but I guess some of you might be interested in the exercise induced A-fib that I have/had and the procedure to have it fixed.  From what I've learned this condition, or this related family of conditions, where athletes develop anomalies in their heart beats, is very common.   Typically they treat it with drugs and tell you to stop being such a type A butt-head, but there's a whole range of pharmacological and surgical solutions as well.   In my particular case the A-fib manifested when I went long or hard, basically any time I loaded my heart.  It developed over the course of 2-3 years and got worse enough for me to figure out something was up and I got a real diagnosis in January.   It manifests as an irregular heart beat in my case and in exercise this means you lose efficiency and power.  The worst case scenario is that your blood pools in the heart chamber causing clots and stroke.   It is caused by anomalous electrical signals that originate in the sheathing of the pipes of the upper right chamber of the heart, in my case.  The procedure that I had is known as cryoablation.  They snake a catheter up through the big arteries in your groin into that chamber of your heart.  I suppose it's a bit invasive but they don't crack your chest open, which is a plus.   When they get the catheter into that chamber of the heart they use a balloon with liquid nitrogen in it to ‘ablate', in this case freeze the tissue where the pipes come in.  In this way they create a dam of scare tissue that block the signals from getting into the heart muscles and, best case scenario, cure the A-fib.  So…yeah…that's what I did last week.  They did all the blood tests, ekg and Catscan on Monday and then I went in Thursday morning for the procedure.  I was a bit of an anomaly myself in the hospital.  Those hospitals, as it turns out, are chock full of sick people.   The nice nurses got me naked and shaved me up.  My wife finally got to have my back hair shaved like she's been trying to get me to do for years.  I don't remember it, but when I woke up they had given me the personal manscape as well.   I know in the mens' magazines this is sexy, but on me it's like Golum on a bad hair day.  The entire area where they went into the groin artery was shaved up leaving Mr.s Happy with cute little Furor mustache.   I was under for the procedure.  Out like a light switch.  I woke up in the afternoon, a bit groggy, but apparently successfully upgraded.  They said everything went well except that I was a bit fibrous in the core and they had trouble feeding the catheter up.  My abdomen is still sore a week later.  I had to spend the night in the hospital.  I had my wits about me and was up and about by early Thursday afternoon so I was left trapped in a room in a hospital full of sick people with really bad food options and a lot of free time on my hands!  I cleared all my email and got caught up on work stuff and watched Netflix.  I can put up with anything as long as there is good Wi-Fi.  Meanwhile a parade of smiling nurses came into my room and asked “Do you mind if I look at your groin?”  To which I'd reply, “Knock yourself out!”  It's the most attention my groin has gotten in decades.  Friday Morning they processed me out.  They told me not to run for a week or to lift anything heavy.  The concern is not for the heart but for the insertion site.  They don't want you rupturing that groin artery because it will bleed a lot.   They also put me on blood thinners.  The good news is that I won't get a clot but I could very well die in a messy shaving accident.  What's the punch line?  I held off running until Thursday morning because my abdomen was still sore and I didn't want to push it.  I walked a bunch through the week.   Thursday morning in Phoenix I put my heart rate strap on and set out with not a small amount of trepidation (that's a big word that means ‘fear').  Yeah, I was, as much as I ever am, afraid of what might happen.  How would my heart react?  Would I pop my groin and bleed out in the gutter? I know it's silly but you have these crazy thoughts, right?  Fear isn't rational.   I walked a 5 minute war up then brought my HR up into Z2 for 15 minutes and it was quite comfortable.  After 20 minutes in I threw in a little Z3/Z4 surge and the heart didn't flip.  I was able to bring it up and bring it down without anything weird happening.   Very encouraging data.  We won't really know until I go long or do a significant long tempo run.  But, all in good time.   To quote the late, great Hunter Thompson, “It got pretty weird, but it never got weird enough for me!”  We have a great show for you today.  I have a great chat with Randy who is a blind runner from my area who talks about his inspirational summiting of all the peaks above 4,000 feet in the NH White Mountains with his guide dog, some of it in the winter!  He also ran Boston this year and we have a number of mutual friends in the local running community.   In section one I tackled the question “What would I do if I had to create a good runner from scratch?”  The script I wrote for this piece is in outline form and I recorded it in a hotel room in Phoenix so it is a bit more conversational than my usual prose.  The second section is a rant about why I can't get a decent salad conveniently in the world.  But – of course I've got my vegetable garden in too. And it is springtime in New England.  I built a new raised bed and used my compost in it.  The soil is a bit ‘young' but I'm going to try growing beans in it.  Beans will grow in anything.   I also built a potato box, which should prove an interesting experiment.  And I've moved my raspberries around and should have a bumper berry crop.  I managed to prune my fruit trees so we'll see if I can actually get some fruit this year.   The hops are up and going crazy already.  I've got some lettuce and cabbagy things in and some herbs seeded.  And I've got my chipmunk traps up.  With any luck I'll be having fruit and veg from my own garden a month or so from now.  On with the show! Section Two – Life Lessons I just want a decent salad! -  http://runrunlive.com/all-i-want-is-a-decent-salad Outro Alright my friends, it's Friday, I'm working on 3 hours of sleep and losing altitude fast, but we have made it to the conclusion of episode 4-312. Congratulations. Now let's move it to the exit before I fall asleep on you.  Now that I've got the green light I have to figure out how to spin up my running again.  My next event is a ½ marathon in the middle of June called the Mayflower Brewery Half Marathon in Plymouth Mass.   And then the Hood to Coast Relay at the end of the summer.  If anyone wants to join that we still have legs available – it's relay and it will be an adventure.   I'll be setting up a fundraising page for that and looking for help. … As you may have figured out I read a lot.  And I don't just read within my areas of expertise.  Yes, I read business books and running books but I also read fiction, biographies, science fiction, short stories and any other topic that I find interesting in the moment.  I would offer this up to you as a life lesson.  Study things you know nothing about.  I'm always pleased by the connections I can make between topics that are on the surface not related. But, my friends, everything is related.  Feed your brain a varied diet and you will see the connections.  So…Watch what I do next…I am going to draw a connection between picking up beautiful women, sales processes and tantric sex.  How about that.  And I'm going to do it without garnering an explicit rating. Feel's a bit like a dangerous high-wire act but what's life without risks? I should note, not that you're going to believe me, but, this is all an academic exercise for me, I'm not in the middle of some bizarre midlife crisis where I jet off to the Caribbean with my secretary.  I don't actually even have a secretary.  Although I do dig the Caribbean. Great SCUBA diving.  The connection between sales process and pick up technique should be obvious.  In both cases you have to have a methodology to approach the target, get their interest by demonstrating high social (or professional) value, build attraction through a push-pull process of demonstrating interest but also challenging.  When you build enough trust you can test compliance and naturally move towards a close.  Simple right?  It is amazing how much a sales cycle and a pickup cycle have in common.  But how do I tie in tantric sex? Here we go.   In all three examples the first thing that you are told to focus on is letting go of the result.  If you are focused on the end result of the process it clouds your ability to execute the process and it prevents you from being in the present moment.   For a sales cycle this means you have to let go of the desire to close the business.  For the pickup artist this means you have to let go of your desire to get the woman.  And for the Tantric sex you likewise reset your focus on the ‘now' and not any particular climactic event.   If you think about it there is an underlying life lesson here.  The ability to live in the present moment and be present to your partners, whether business or social, is your ability to add value and connect. But you can only do that if you are willing to let go of the end result.  My friends, we spend so much time in our lives rushing from one thing to the next, from one goal to the next, from one result to the next that we forget that every moment in itself is truth and purity.  Are you free-wheeling peripatetically downhill to a frenzied end?   Maybe you need to take the time to be present, especially in your interactions with the people in your life?  Don't forget about right now, this moment, and appreciate it.   And If I happen to run into you I will be sure to appreciate it and see you out there.  Closing comments Http://www.marathonbq.com http://runrunlive.com/my-books

Don’t forget about right now, this moment, and appreciate it.   And If I happen to run into you I will be sure to appreciate it and see you out there.  Closing comments Http://www.marathonbq.com http://runrunlive.com/my-books

It’s the Talking Comics podcast post-SDCC. None of the fearless crew made it out to the big show this year, but that doesn’t stop them from discussing some of their favourite pieces of news to come out of it. The second half of the show is dedicated to bringing up a few exciting tidbits from us and from you, our wonderful and loyal listeners. The first half of the show is all comic talk and we jump right into things with our Lightning Round consisting of such books as: Supreme: Blue Rose, Batman and Robin, Daredevil, Invaders, Steed and Mrs. Peel: We’re Needed, Star Trek: City on the Edge of Forever, Mighty Avengers, Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm, American Vampire: Second Cycle, Amazing Spider-Man and Sorrow. Then we get into our Books of the Week and some of those titles are: Ragnarok, Batman, Afterlife with Archie, Storm, The Fifth Beatle, Breath of Bones: A Tale of the Golum, The Thief of Always, Justice League United (aka Justice League of Canada).

Abbey and Sarah review episode 10 - Golum of FOX's Sleepy Hollow We talk about how we feel as Ichabod deals with the revelation of his fatherhood. John Nobel returns as the ever interesting Henry Parish, our resident Sin Eater! We moan yet again about how unimpressed and uninvested we are in Katrina's arc this season. We also see some thread of continuity having seen the creepy ass golum/doll in a previous episode. The prospect of a month haitus is killing us, so we ask for YOUR suggestions of a podcast to do over the holidays!
