When was the last time you asked yourself what your spirituality/faith is for? On this episode, Petra risks rattling a few cages with a message that doesn't sit alongside what wider society often tells us. Joining Petra to explore the purpose of faith is Arch-Bishop Justin Duckworth and Kate Hall (@ethicallykate on Insta). Petra and Justin unpack their discussion that they had on Aotea/Great Barrier Island over summer. If you've been wondering what this conversation that we've been teasing since the start of the year is, here you go! Producer Sam went looking for someone who puts their words into actions, and found Kate Hall, who goes by @ethicallykate online. Petra and Kate talk about what it looks like to let your values influence your actions, and how this can actually be super life-giving! Haere mai! Music: Anchin Kfu Ayinkash by Hailu Mergia and the Dahlak Band (used to end Justin's interview) Alright by Kendrick Lamar Stormy by Gabor Szabo (played during communion) Summer's End by Julie Byrne (played during the candle reflection) Losalamitoslatinfunklovesong by Gene Harris (played to end Kate's interview) No Ordinary Life by Matt Corby Interlude by Julie Byrne (played during the benediction) The sacred text in this epsiode is Twenty-One Elephants by Scottie Reeve (pages 36-37)
Considering the number of people who are constantly chasing after contentment, you'd think someone would have found a tried and true formula by now, right? Unfortunately, it seems we need to keep looking, if such a formula even exists (which after making this episode of Sunday Sanctuary seems increasingly unlikely). Trusting in a comment he once heard that it's more interesting to hear from someone still working it out as opposed to someone on the other side, producer Sam steps forward to share some of his wrestle with contentment. Sam introduces Petra to his friend Cole and the two have a conversation about finding contentment in the midst of their very different lives. Later on, Petra talks with Rev. Spanky Moore about what he has learnt and noticed about contentment. Spanky charts his journey from playing in a punk band and through his radio career before landing up as an Anglican priest and tells Petra about one life-changing conversation he had at age 25. Haere mai! Sacred texts: 'The Dude abides' scene from The Big Lebowski 'Alleyway conversation' scene from Before Sunrise (an incredible film!) Music: Take Five by Dave Brubeck (played during Sam's boat story) East Cape by Headland (played during Sam's boat story) Le Petits Gris by Khruangbin (played during Sam and Cole's conversation) Sun Rays Like Stilits by Tommy Geurrero (played at the end of Cole's conversation) Actually by Rozi Plain (Can't Get No) Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones (played during communion) Getting to Me by Caroline Rose Anchin Kfu Ayinkash by Hailu Mergia and the Dhalak Band (played at the end of Spanky's conversation) memory as miniatures by Rachika Nayar (played during the benediction)

Hailu Mergia is one of Ethiopia's most virtuoso keyboard magicians. On the accordion, keyboard, piano or melodica, he conjures up playful and mystical melodies. He is inspired by traditional folk songs of his homeland and underlays them with modern funk and jazz grooves. Imagine you get into a taxi, and at the wheel is a legendary keyboardist from Ethiopia! Hailu Mergia spent almost 20 years ferrying customers around Washington DC, jamming on his instrument while waiting for the next ride. His unusual career began in the rural province of Sheva, where he was born in 1946. In the 70s, he became part of the Walias Band, the house band at Addis Ababa's hip Hilton Hotel. He experienced first-hand the difficult time around 1974 when Emperor Haile Selassie was overthrown by the DERG regime. To get around the curfew, his Walias Band simply played non-stop from midnight to five o'clock. In the 80s, he moved to the USA, where he kept his head above water with various jobs, but never forgot his love for music. In 2013, he made a comeback after the label "Awesome Tapes From Africa" reissued his classics. In the soundtrack, he tells us about companions like Mulatu Astatke, role models like Jimmy Smith and about the turbulent times in Ethiopia in the 70s. | Shownotes at www.wdr.de/k/soundtrackvon Von Adrian Nowak.
Ethan Brown means so many things to both me and the world. Besides the titles of son, brother, father, husband, friend, bartender, boss, and expert, he has earned the right to be called kind, thoughtful, clever, witty, warm, and a bucketful of other things, too. He's the portal to what's hip. He's a vehicle for what's hilarious. He's the embodiment of passionate when it comes to the things he loves, and his presence is the elixir you need to right yourself.Ethan blew my mind with his selection of badass records, except for that he really didn't.That is -- right, wrong, or otherwise -- I had a natural expectation that what he would come up with would leave me feeling like a musical novice, and I was not off the mark in unintentionally thinking that that would be the case.I mean…It's hard to believe that I've somehow managed to churn out 14 of these sons o' guns, and not one guest has disappointed me. In fact, I've really, really enjoyed every last one of the conversations and the records that accompanied them. All of them have been fun; a large majority have been surprising and educational. And if you like nice, round numbers like I do, the 15th installment wound up being the perfect slot for Ethan in that each privilege I get in the form of hanging with a fantastic human while chatting life and music refuels the tank that often feels somewhat depleted upon the conclusion of producing a finished episode. And it seems as though laughter is the primary component in the fuel of said recharging; no one has made me laugh harder than Ethan, and that's a tribute to his electric personality.Ethan and I have seen the other side of midnight together a time or two, and each of those occasions were both some of the best nights I've ever had and precursors to the worst mornings rememberable (or barely rememberable). I recall one evening at a Waldo watering hole in which we were having shots of some concoction called Five Alive.I know. Makes you think akin to fruit punch, right? Nope. Pretty gross, actually. But we had more than one a piece. And the next day we agreed to forever call those red beverages, Hello and Have a Shitty Tomorrow. On another occasion, I had to be retrieved -- due to overindulgence -- from his housewarming party, and between his front porch and my then-fiancee's car, I lost my keys and stepped directly in the mud I'd been attempting to avoid. Pretty sure a portion of the evening (once safely home) was spent on the bathroom floor.Anyway, Ethan picked Hailu Mergia's Tezeta, Super Ape by The Upsetters (a Lee "Scratch" Perry outfit), El-P's Fantastic Damage, Too Hard to Swallow by UGK, and GZA's Liquid Swords. And if you're anything like me, first glance at that list might yield a heavy dose of, Huh?! Turns out, the thing's a pile of gems. And that's kinda the point of this whole deal. I enjoyed this conversation so much. Hope you do, too. Thanks for stopping by. If you happened to share this episode with a friend, I wouldn't be mad at ya'. And if you're viewing on the YouTube channel, it'd sure be swell if you hit “like,” and “subscribe” on your way outta here. Oh, and by the way, if you happen upon Ethan out there on them streets, please refer to him by his true given name, Pipecock Jackson. Thank you. That is all.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the intro/outro audio clips. They are samples from Coolbone's cover of the Bill Withers tune, “Use Me,” and it's off of their 1996 record called Brass-Hop, c/o Broadcast Music, Inc.

Admittedly, our apologies for posting this so late as it got lost in the shuffle, but this is a lovely program broadcast on Children's Day so we thought we'd take dead aim at the exhausted parents who'd put up with a day of taking their wildlings to restaurants and other civilized places while also putting it on for the parents-to-be with a selection of romanticisms, disco funk, and various other love phantasms to help things along. Dan Lloyd of course joined us once again with a smattering of new rock joints paired with some nostalgic childhood-centered songs from various eras to close things in his own emphatic and creative way. As broadcast August 26, 2021 with a boatload of room to stretch the legs on the podcast ride. Tonight we paid tribute to Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe" to start off, which went to #1 on the Billboard charts on this date in 1967 for a four week ride at the top. More importantly, we finished by double dipping with The Rolling Stones in tribute to drummer Charlie Watts, who passed away earlier this week. The man was not the flashiest guy on the beat by any stretch nor the most technical, but he was always in the pocket to a tee and did what was required for one of the greatest bands of all time in his own way. We also release our latest playlist in August's rendition of The Damyang Drop, so we covered the funkier & more soulful joints in part 1 & 2 for our Sampled funk & soul first hour.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Clydie King – Ode to Billie JoeBob & Fred – I'll Be On My WayJungle – Can't Stop The StarsPatti Jo – Make Me Believe In YouRoxy Music – Love Is The Drug (Todd Terje edit)Part II (33:16)Moondog feat Rob Burger – Bird's LamentCamille Yarbrough – Take Yo PraiseHailu Mergia & The Walias – Endegena El Michels Affair – Fazed OutTortoise – A Simple Way To Go Faster Than Light That Does Not WorkWeather Report – River People (Live)Los Porcos – Porc Noise Complaint Part III (69:24)Rolling Stones – Honky Tonk WomenParquet Courts – Walking at a Downtown PaceSame Fender – AyeThe Bronx – Mexican SummerBoston Manor – Carbon MonoDave Hause – Surfboard Part IV (100:19)Royal Blood – Sad But TrueDeviates – WastedThe Copyrights – HalosLaura Jane Grace and the Devouring Mothers – Apocalypse Now (& Later)Roger Taylor – We're All Just Trying to Get By ft KT TunstallRolling Stones – Gimme Shelter

As broadcast July 8, 2021 with bonus beats for you podcast measurers. We pay one week overdue tribute to "Stakes Is High," a landmark album released by De La Soul last week in 1996. An album whose reverberations can still be very felt today, we rocked some beats & lo-fi stuff for the entirety of part 1. In the 2nd half of our Sampled funk & soul first hour, we marked this date in 1972 when "Lean On Me" by Bill Withers went to #1, and got a couple of new joints from Izo Fitzroy & Lady Wray in, then finished with a couple Ethiojazz & Zambian soul classics from the 1970's. Dan Lloyd joined us after the jump and with pickins pretty slim due to the 4th of July holiday in the US, he also went with a few new cuts while also going through some tunes that he did not play on the show just due to the volume of stuff coming out, especially in May & June.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Dela – Stakes Is HighPete Rock – For The PeopleOddissee – Beach Dr.Jazz Liberators – Clin D'oeilDigable Planets – Black EgoPart II (31:10)Bill Withers – Lean On MeBill Withers – I Can't Write Left-HandedIzo Fitzroy – Everybody Knows This Ain't RightLady Wray – Games People PlayHailu Mergia & The Walias – TezetaAmanaz – Khala My Friend Part III (61:54)Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes – StickyThe Ophelias – Neil Young on High ft Julien BakerPoppy – HerPuppy – AngelThe Wallflowers – Who's That Man Walking Round My GardenTom Petty and the Heartbreakers – 105 Degrees Part IV (91:57)Death From Above 1979 – Free AnimalThe Armed – A Life So WonderfulKing Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Catching SmokeAdult Mom – Frost'68 – Bad BiteFaye Webster – Cheers
As broadcast July 1, 2021 with extra tape for the podcast. On this date in 1979, Sony introduced the first Walkman to the world, and it was never the same again. The age of headphone culture and the mixtape was upon us & was a seismic cultural shift all over the world. Great funk & soul music in our first hour, with special attention paid to new albums from Tyler, The Creator along with Hiatus Kaiyote that dropped last Friday. We also have our newest edition of The Damyang Drop coming out tomorrow, so we highlighted some selections from that as well. For our second hour AMPED rock feature, Dan Lloyd showcased some great new tunes from Quicksand & The Bronx, along with a killer Metallica cover from St. Vincent, who just can do no wrong at this point.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Dyke & The Blazers – Funky WalkRoger Fakhr – Had To Come Back WetRenee – Lay Me DownThe Chequers – Get Up, Stand UpDeath Hawks – Hey Ya Sun Ra Part II (30:51)Hailu Mergia – Yefkir EngurguroErasmo Carlos – Minha GenteTyler, The Creator – MASSAHiatus Kaiyote – All The Words We Don't WaySteve Earle – Meet Me In The AlleywayThe Ironsides – SommerSurprise Chef – Have You Fed Baby Huey Today Part III (63:16)Quicksand – Missile CommandThe Bronx – Curb FeelersSt. Vincent – Sad But TrueBlink 182 – Stockholm SyndroneGeese - Disco Part IV (95:02)The Vaccines – Back in Love CityNoun – In the ShadeMudhoney – Who You Drivin' Now?Iron Maiden – Run to the HillsLess Than Jake – Need Some ShakingJourney – The Way We Used To Be

Hailu Mergia is a master accordionist and veteran bandleader, arranger, and keyboardist, originally from Ethiopia. He became famous in his homeland in the 1970s, playing with the Walias Band and the Dahlak Band. In the 1980s he defected to the US and did not play in public for decades. But all of that changed recently!

Nick’s kicks us off today talking concerts. All of a sudden it feels like spring has settled in, but then, just underneath that, the faint awareness that we’re really in a new place for some unknown time to come. So, what about those concerts and all the artists that depend on them for their livelihood. How long before it’s safe to start those up again? A random article in Taste of Country cites an expert as predicting that it won’t be until the Fall of 2021. What? … When? This reminded Greg that his buddy Wayan Zoey, Production Manager at Brooklyn Bowl, would be great to bring some on-the-ground perspective to the conversation. He brings a lot of that and we were really glad to have him on.Wayan’s Song: Butcher Brown - 918Greg also brings us, not only another round of “Review the Review”, but a brand new theme song (killing it Greg!)! This time we tackle Jenn Pelly’s review of Fiona Apple’s latest album “Fetch the Bolt Cutters”. A fantastic album, to say the least…but a 10/10? From Pitchfork? What’s going on here? Let’s “Review the Review”!Song: Fiona Apple - Under the TableLastly, Jay has curiously managed to remain work-day productive and tonight he finally comes cleans on his secret. Apparently all you have to do is listen to the music mentioned on this nearly-every-work-week-day/daily newsletter called Flowstate (nope, they didn’t pay for that)…oh, a year’s worth of daily meditation is also super helpful. Anyway, awash in his efficient workflow last week, Jay discovered this Ethiopian musician and has really gotten into his 1985 release “Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument”. It’s a great album and also an interesting story.Song: Hailu Mergia - AmbaselWe hope everyone is doing as well as possible right now. This may not be ending soon, but it really will be over someday, not in a blink, but in steps and retreats and then, eventually, a slow fade... and then all we’ll have left is the scar of the memory. Just hang-in there and do the best you can. It’ll be nice to tell it like that one day to a young person trying to imagine what it must have been like, “We just hung-in there..and did the best we could”.
Along with a blast of new and homegrown talents, episode five charts the extraordinary musical journey of Ethiopian keyboard player Hailu Mergia, from the golden age of Ethio jazz in Addis Ababa to several fallow years driving a cab in Washington and onto his rediscovery and glorious return in 2013...

Hailu Mergia was a famous recording and performing musician in Ethiopia in the 1960s and 1970s. He moved to the DC-area in the 1980s and became a cab driver. Today, Mergia lives in Fort Washington, MD, still drives a cab (the Dulles route), and records and releases traditional and original music. We discuss his life then and now, and play selections form his recordings, past and present.

Some of it is dance-y, some of it is poetic, some of it is straight FUNKY while some other songs merely flirt with synths and drum machines. Easily one of my favorite episodes so far, not only will you learn about something COMPLETELY different, you'll have a great time doing so! Been around the world and ay ay ay… I can’t find my Winky. Hello listeners, here’s a special exotic episode of Winky and the Stain, featuring all manner of tunes and artists that the Stain really likes but couldn’t cram into any themed shows because he doesn’t understand the language they’re in. Hopefully this will demonstrate our sensitive, multicultural side. Despite the uniformly poor pronunciation. Well, I've got good news and I've got bad news. The bad news first: I'm sick! Which means I don't do a whole lot of talking (secretly good news?). The good news, though, is that this week we're celebrating 26 EPISODES!!!! Why is that so cool, you ask? Well, to simply put it... if I do one episode a week... and there are 52 weeks in a year... That must mean... My golly! Scarlo Wapittaluigi's International House of Music is six months old! Oh my has the time flown by. Well, I raise my cup of echinacea tea to another six! Thank you all so much for listening! Oh, and as a special bonus, I tacked on an extra half-hour of music for ya. Enjoy! Jazz It Up !!! #220 - 05.11.2015 by Simone Vimercati An eclettic mix of new, old and classic sounds with no time and one common thing: Jazz Music. This is the aim of "Jazz It Up !!!". A selection where Jazz is mixed but without borders and limits of time and genres, which often bring this music to be a niche's phenomenon for experts and purists. During this appointment, I give you a cocktail of pleasant and good quality music that goes from instrumental to vocal jazz, from soul to funky, from latin to rare grooves or new electric sounds. This is also to show everybody that jazz is not a musical genre, but a style, an attitude to express ourselves through the music. This attitude keeps on evolving and it has no limits. It is a music that embraces many listeners' generations: from the youngest, who can discover the past's giants through new artists, to the the eldest who will get amazed by listening to the music's evolution of jazz, soul and funk. I wish you a good listening: let you cherish by "Jazz It Up !!!". "Jazz It Up !!!" radioshow is available through radios, web radios, platforms for streaming on-demand and podcast.
