It's February 1st. You're listening to the President's Daily Brief. Your morning intel starts now. ------ A good day to you, ladies and gentlemen. I've got four briefs for you this morning that are shaping America — and the world. First, the city of Grand Forks, North Dakota has decided to cancel that Chinese mill that was going to be built in their city, just 16 miles from a key air force base. I'll tell you why. Second, an update on attempts to save the Colorado River out west. States who use that water tried to come up with a negotiated deal to share the river's resources but they failed. I'll explain what comes next. Third, some bad news for countries looking to build factories to make their own solar panels. China just banned the export of some key equipment. Finally, an update on Cold War II. America got a couple countries to stop selling China some computer chip technology that could be used to advance Beijing's military ambitions. Later, we close out the podcast with a listener question about Joe Biden sending in tanks and possibly fighter jets to Ukraine. My response involves some old advice from a guy named Dirty Harry. ----- Please remember to subscribe if you enjoyed this episode of the President's Daily Brief. Here is why. In the world of duality we need opposites for defining purposes. I want to tie this into recovery one more time. Do not gauge your recovery success on your emotions. You will feel them all. Yes, do more of what you enjoy, but thank the other side of that for telling you what you don't enjoy. Emily enjoys being crafty and making stuff. Emily doesn't remember seeing any unhealthy alcohol behavior in her home while growing up. Emily was 13 the first time she got drunk. 20 years old and in college Emily got her first bartending job. She met her husband working in the bar in Cincinnati and they have now been together for 13 years. After having her first baby Emily got out of bartending and into alcohol sales. This escalated her drinking. She then got pregnant with her 2nd and went back to bartending after that. As her kids got older there was more drinking and drugs…while still getting up and taking care of her kids and responsibilities. January 2021 Emily quit drinking for 5 months. This year Emily changed jobs, started working at a new bar with good friends. Emily was approaching 1 month sober at the time of her interview. Dr. Erin Haugen grew up on a farm in rural North Dakota. On the advice of her mom, she decided to stay close to home and “try a semester or two” at UND. What started out as a couple of semesters ended up being a number of years as she received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND. Although she attended undergraduate school with the intention of becoming a psychiatrist, in this podcast, she admits that she didn't know what a psychologist was until one of her professors pulled her aside and said “Erin, I actually think you want to be a psychologist instead of a psychiatrist.” At that point, she took a different route and combined her passion for athletics and understanding people and began working with athletes. She soon became very aware of the performance piece that is present for many athletes and this opened the door for her to do more research and eventually jump into the discipline of sport psychology. Dr. Haugen is a licensed clinical psychologist and sport psychologist in Grand Forks, ND. In fact, she is the only sport psychologist in the state of North Dakota who is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC). In this podcast, Dr. Haugen reflects on her academic and professional journey and gives us a glimpse into how it feels to work with athletes from over 20 different sports ranging from recreational to elite (Olympic and professional). Throughout our discussion, she provides advice for those interested in psychology and also offers specific advice to those interested in the field of sport psychology. Dr. Haugen literally travelled coast to coast to gain experience and education in the field of psychology. She provides insight into why she selected the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks for her doctorate in clinical psychology. Dr. Haugen travelled to Connecticut to complete her pre-doctoral internship at River Valley Services/Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown. She completed her post-doctoral residency at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. She then returned home because she had the opportunity to work at the Assessment and Therapy Associates of Grand Forks (ATAGF) and has been working there ever since she received her license. She is not only a clinician, she is also the Director of Continuing Education and Training at ATAGF. During our discussion, Dr. Haugen talks about psychological flexibility and states that it is “an evidence-based principle and it really describes everything that I'm doing all day with athletes.” She proudly describes herself as a “nerdy kid at heart” and has always been interested in people and why they do what they do. I would say she is an “athletic nerd” because she has always been involved in athletics including anything from basketball to track to now focusing on triathlons (with the help of her border collie mix rescue dogs). I also learned that Dr. Haugen swore that she would never be in a relationship with another psychologist yet, here she is, happily married to a psychologist who specializes in couples and relationship work. You can listen to the podcast to find out what kind of fancy psychological terms they use when they argue. Happy New Year! Did you resolve to lose weight this year? Running burns a ton of calories so it should be a great way to melt off the pounds, right? Well, maybe not. Dr. Kyle Flack, a weight-loss researcher from the University of Kentucky, conducts studies on how the body responds to exercise and how much you really need to work out to work off those extra pounds, and it turns out you need to work out a lot more than the current recommendations suggest. Dr. Flack was recently featured in a New York Times article on exercising to lose weight and he shares his research results and provides insights on why weight loss isn’t as simple as burning more calories than you take in. He explains how body chemistry can seemingly work against us, thwarting significant weight loss, especially for fitter people, and why it’s not uncommon for people to actually gain weight while training for a marathon. Through his studies, Dr. Flack has found that people overcompensate for the calories they’ve burned pretty consistently, and he shares what the average calorie overcompensation amount is and how much exercise time is required to overcome it to really drop pounds. He also talks about how long it takes to make exercise a habit, he compares strength training to aerobic exercise for weight loss potential, and also reveals whether it’s possible to build muscle and lose fat at the same time. If your goal is to lose or maintain your weight through your running, this is definitely a must-listen-to episode! Kyle Flack grew up in a small town in Vermont where, as a 4-year starter on the varsity football team, earned All-State honors twice and won two state championships. He left to play college football at Ferrum College in Southwest Virginia, earning a BS in health sciences 4 years later. He continued his education at Virginia Tech in the Department of Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise, where he earned his PhD in 2014. Upon beginning grad school, Kyle also turned over a new leaf in terms of his exercise routine, going from 280-pound power-lifting football player (who got winded walking upstairs) to a runner. He devoted an entire winter and spring to this newfound training, lost 40 pounds, and completed his first marathon, Vermont City Marathon in 2008. From there he was addicted, running two marathons each year for the next 5 years throughout grad school and dropping another 30 pounds. Each marathon was a new learning experience, a new opportunity to get better, and always ended with the goal or running the next marathon faster! After grad school, and after finally reaching that sub-3:30 goal (he did the Marshall University Marathon in 3:27) Kyle shifted his attention to triathlons, which he has been at since 2014. Kyle completed a Post-Doctoral research fellowship with the USDA in Grand Forks North Dakota from 2014 to 2017 and has since been an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky in the Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition since 2017. Kyle is an RD (registered dietitian) and primarily focused on researching weight loss physiology, how exercise may affect eating behaviors, and how exercise can be more appropriately used for weight control. Questions Kyle is asked: 4:52 You are a researcher at the University of Kentucky specializing in how exercise affects eating and weight loss. And you don't just study it, you used running to lose weight yourself. Can you share your experience? 7:27 You were already an athlete with football so it wasn’t like you were obese or overweight and just wanted to lose weight by running? 7:58 Let’s get into some weight loss science. It seems that weight loss should be easy. It’s "calories in and calories out." What makes it more complicated than that? 10:00 When you lose weight, you’re obviously lighter so there’s less of you to move around. Is that correct? 10:30 Why isn't exercise generally effective for weight loss? 11:37 Overcompensating for calorie expenditure due to exercise is not entirely all our fault. This is not entirely a willpower issue or something like that. Our body’s working against us. Is that correct? 14:28 What you’re saying is when you go for a great run and you get all these endorphins flowing, you’re feeling really good, the entire pan of brownies tastes even better, right? 15:15 Many athletes that I’ve coached have actually gained weight when they start training for a marathon. They are burning a ton of calories and for whatever reason instead of losing weight, they gain weight. How is that possible? 19:34 I did a calculator once to figure out how many calories I burned running a mile and it was something terrible like 56 calories, and I’m just like, “What! That’s not fair.” Why is our body doing this to us? 20:17 In a recent study you did, you and your team found that in order to lose fat, the participants in the study needed to burn 3000 extra calories per week. Can you talk about this study? 21:52 In your recent study, were the participants moving less in their normal lives when they weren’t exercising? Were they slowing down? 23:27 The exercise you put the test participants through, was it just walking? Is that what you had them do? 23:51 Any other differences would you expect to find if you did the same study with athletes rather than obese, sedentary people? 25:01 Does the type of exercise matter? How about duration, frequency, or intensity? 26:44 The results of your study show frequency doesn’t matter. That’s good news for the weekend warriors, right? 27:19 You’ve also done some studies about the reinforcement value of exercise and I’d love to hear your thoughts on how we can make exercise a habit that we can stick to. 33:27 You’re talking about a significant amount of exercise, five, six, seven hours a week for most people to get addicted to exercise? 34:11 One thing about exercise studies and nutrition studies, there’s some inherent difficulties in studying human beings because we’re not rats and you can’t put us in cages. So what kind of limitations did you find in some of your studies? What are the challenges that you find in this kind of work? 39:36 Nutrition labels, they don’t have to be perfectly accurate. I’ve heard that you can be 20% off on your nutrition label and it still be okay with the FDA. So calories in aren’t always perfect, right? 40:12 What about strength training? How does that differ from cardio when it comes to weight loss, hunger, the afterburn? We hear that when you strength train, muscles take more energy to sustain than fat does so you’re burning more just standing around if you have more muscle mass. Can you talk about that? 42:59 Can you gain muscle at the same time as lose fat? I’ve heard that that’s not always the case. Is that possible? 44:18 What questions are still unsolved and what kind of research are you looking to do in the future? Questions I ask everyone: 48:39 If you could go back and talk to yourself when you started running, what advice would you give? 49:46 What is the greatest gift running has given you? 50:19 Where can listeners connect with you? Quotes by Kyle: “If you lose weight, we would expect you to decrease your total energy expenditure, but what’s really been found is that if you lose weight, you decrease it more than what we would anticipate.” “We need to exercise more to overcome that obligatory 1000-calorie-a-week compensatory response so we can actually see useful weight loss. So that 150-minutes-a-week recommendation that we hear actually isn’t enough to overcome that compensatory response.” “With aerobic exercise, you can put someone on, ‘You’re going to exercise at this heart rate for 30 minutes,’ and you can do that for everybody and they all have the same workout. But if you say, ‘Okay, you’re going to go to the gym and lift weights for an hour,’ that’s going to look completely different from one person to the next person in terms of muscle activation, what you’re lifting, how heavy, how intense.” Take a Listen on Your Next Run Want more awesome interviews and advice? Meet Keith Broecker, a former Air Force pilot who used his guitar and quick wit to convince a cadre of instructor pilots he was worth keeping around....leading to an aviation career that spans Learjets, Tankers, Spy planes, and your next United flight (eventually). During the podcast, Keith opens up about how the Air Force culture deals with death, how the "dreaded" assignment to Grand Forks North Dakota was actually pretty awesome and how 17 deployments and hundreds of combat hours led him to create songs that resonate with anyone who's been away from family for extended periods. A "product of the 80's", Keith plays "Two Weeks", a song about a parent's feeling when a child joins the military, "Slipping Bonds", a tribute to Air Force pilots who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and "Late November" from the first OE album. A humble talent with a commanding voice that can be heard in San Francisco cul de sacs during the Coronavirus, Keith is everyone's next best friend. Support the show (http://www.operationencore.org)

Project : Constellation is Santiago Silva and Christina Rosebrough. They're an acoustic-folk-rock-pop (and more) duo from Grand Forks North Dakota that's full of inspiration and personality. Their songs are influenced anywhere from old Irish Folk music to modern day punk. They've been racking up the miles the last couple of years playing venues far and wide and making new fans. They even had a tour this last summer in Georgia (and we don't mean the state, we mean the country)! We are so thankful we had the opportunity to sit down with them and chat. We hope you have as much fun listening to this episode as we did recording it. If their fun personalities don't have you convinced to check out one of their shows, we hope their track "Closed Doors" does! There were so many more things we wanted to cover, but we left plenty of opportunity for another episode in the future. Event: Gear West DuathlonDate: Sunday, May 19, 2013Location: Orono High School, Orono MNHotel: Home, sweet home (10 minute drive away!)Weather: 66F, winds at 10 MPH from SSW, light rain (heavy rain right before, delaying start 15 mins)Official Results: Overall Results; Age Group Results; Gender Results; Awards ResultsPrevious Results: Last time I was at this event was 1992, and it was held in the fall at that timePersonal ResultsGoal: Top 5 in AGActual: 3rd in AGOverall: 60th (249 total); 3rd in 50-54 AG (26 total)GarminGarmin results link Pre-CapWhat a long weekend. Friday night was spent driving to River Falls WI for the pre-event technical meeting for Podium Boy's first Modern Pentathlon. 50 mile drive took 1 hr 45 mins. Saturday it was the MP event itself kicking off with fencing at 8AM, swimming at 11AM, equestrian at 2PM, and the combined (shooting/running) at 3PM. Podium Boy came out as Male Youth C Champion (yeah!!) and is now going to Colorado Springs the first week of July to train with the Youth Development team at the Olympic Training Center and then compete in the national event. Podium has work ahead of head, there is a boy in New Mexico that might be a bit better than him at the moment. If you are curious, here is a link to photos from the Pentathlon event. And video:20 13 Great Prairie Pentathlon Highlights from Brian Maas on Vimeo. As for me, Saturday was a very long day including travel time. When I woke up Sunday I was toying with bagging the Gear West Du and just going back to bed. Especially when the weather radar showed a big line of red heading our way. Still, with rain pouring down I left for the event.Heading to the Start LineBecause of the rain, the event was delayed 15 minutes. I chose to run with the competitive wave, which means I got to leave with Wave 1 yet still be available for AG awards. I wanted to do this because I figured it would be very muddy (much of the run course is trail), and footing would be treacherous, especially on the second run. And it was muddy! Sorry, no GoPro videos...that would have been cool...but the battery was charging from the MP the day before. But to give you a taste, here are the flats I used. I used my backup Mizuno's as I knew my Nike LunaRacers would get destroyed. Before the raceAfter the race. Run One (2.8 miles; Garmin said 3.03)Goal: sub 6:30 paceTime: 20.20 (7:16 per mile pace)Did I mention it was muddy? And I fell turning a tight 180-degree turn on muddy grass. Insult to injury.Transition OneGoal: 1:10Time: 1:50Sort of a long stretch from the timing mat to the bike corral, so I'm not worried about being over my goal.Bike (16.6 miles)Goal: 21+ mph avgTime: 47:08 (21.1 MPH Avg)The bike wasn't that bad, as the rain stopped. What was bad was I had my first calf cramps of the year. I easily lost 60-90 seconds, maybe more, trying to shake those out. I was surprised as I had not had any this racing season. Maybe it was the slipping and sliding in the mud.Additionally, while I really like my new racing helmet, it got pretty steamy in there on climbs and the face shield did fog up a bit. But it cleared quickly. Transition TwoGoal: 1:10Time: 1:18At least the calf muscles did not cramp up while changing into the flats.Run Two (2.8 miles; Garmin said 3.03)Goal: sub 6:50 paceTime: 21:48 (7:47 per mile pace)The calf muscles were extremely tight as I started the second run. More of an old man shuffle. It took a good 1/2 mile before I can get into a normal stride. The second run felt better than the first, but after 250 people went through the course the first time, the second time was a swamp mud fest. I kept expecting to see lost shoes stuck in the mud.On the second run, before the mud flatsPost-CapThis does not bode well for Apple and possibly qualifying for Worlds. I will need to finish in the top 6 in my AG, and as of now I count at least seven people that can beat me. I'm just too slow on the run right now, which has always saved me from my slow bike splits.AwardsI chose to use my AG 3rd place result into the hat for the $500 gift card. I didn't win, bah!Next RaceMay 25 - Apple Duathlon (world duathlon regional qualifier). I'll have to finish in the top six in my age group in order to qualify for World Duathlon champion in August. In reviewing the participant list, this will be a long-shot at best.On DeckJune 1 - Dewey Kvidt Duathlon, in Grand Forks ND. I've yet to sign up, but am planning to go. I've wanted to try this event for a number of years. This would be my 7th straight racing weekend and 12th race of the young year.
