Buon ascolto
Last month, Dr. Lee-Hwa Tai taught us about what oncolytic viruses or "OVs" are. So naturally we followed up with a trainee to learn about some cool research going on in the field. Dr. Reza Rezaei, a recent PhD graduate, studied OVs and now is taking it further to learn how we can combine OVs with CAR T/NK cells during a postdoctoral fellowship. In the second half of the episode we are joined by our podcast's own content creator: Lauralie Short. Lauralie did her master's in OV research so her and Grace provide some clarification on some of the more technical and difficult to understand OV topics. -- Interested in learning more about immunotherapy? Welcome to Vamp-tober! For this year's October theme, Cinema on Tap will be taking a deep dive into vampire movies. To start, we're going way back to the beginning, and discussing the OVs: 1922's Nosferatu and 1931's Dracula. Both of these films are adaptations of Bram Stoker's genre-defining novel and hugely important in film history. F.W. Murnau's silent film has lived on as one of the most influential films of the silent era, while Tod Browning's film kickstarted the Universal Monsters series and made an enduring impact on popular culture. Is Max Schreck or Bela Lugosi the better vampire? Which is the superior film? Will Producer Lalo survive watching his first silent film? All these questions and more will be answered on the show! Plus, get our quick review of The Substance and Scott's thoughts on Megalopolis! What's your favorite vampire movie? Let us know at cinemaontappodcast@gmail.com

Wait, viruses as cancer therapy?? That's right! Oncolytic viruses or OVs are a newer and promising type of therapy that uses viruses to take down cancer in a safe manner. But how the HEK do they work? This month we sit down with Dr. Lee-Hwa Tai from the University of Sherbrooke, Quebec to discuss all about OVs. Join us as we dive into how OVs kill cancer, their current status in the clinic, how safety is managed, exciting research in the field, and more! -- Interested in learning more about immunotherapy? Percassi Retail gestisce in Italia e all'Estero brand come Nike, Lego, Victoria's Secret, Saint Lauren, Gucci e Starbucks.

Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Brian Stultz, Henry Patton and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses mostly of football recruiting. Hugh Freeze and his staff have brought so many highly ranked (and talented) players on campus during the past two weeks. Will this yield tangible dividends soon? Caleb and Bryan think so. Bryan can't wait for the schedule reveal Wednesday. Auburn played host to six OVs last weekend and five more OVs are on campus today. So much interest! The Fightin' Pearls added another transfer for the 2023-24 season, but this one didn't come with a lot of fanfare. Henry explains why that's not a problem.

On this week's episode of Reimagining Cyber about launching the OWASP Verification Standard (OVS), Stan Wisseman and Rob Aragao talk with Tom Brennan, CIO for Mandelbaum Barrett law firm and North America Executive Director for CREST. The three of them talk about the history of CREST, the new OWASP Verification Standard (OVS), and its connection with the OWASP Application Security Verification Standard (ASVS).CREST was established in 2006 as an international non-profit organization that represents the global cyber security industry. The organization's goal is to help create a secure digital world for all by quality assuring its members and delivering professional certifications to the cyber security industry through a rigorous quality assurance process so others can have confidence in the cyber security services they consume. CREST Americas offers programs across six cyber security communities, which include: government, regulators, buying community, service suppliers, training and academia, and professional bodies.Recently, CREST collaborated with the Open Web Application Security Project, better known as OWASP, to launch the OWASP Verification Standard (OVS). OVS is a new quality assurance standard for the global AppSec industry. It is designed to provide mobile and web app developers with superior security assurance and accredited organizations with improved access to the expanding application development industry. Brennan gave an overview of OVS's ability to execute and deliver assessments related to the different levels of the OWASP Application Security Verification Standard (ASVS). ASVS provides a source for testing web application technical controls and provide developers a list of secure development requirements. Its aim is to normalize the variety of coverage and level of rigor accessible in the market to verify web application security by using a commercially workable open standard. By including ASVS, CREST was able to support the open-source community to build and support global standards.Brennan believes that OVS is useful to many organizations, as long as they meet the qualifications needed. It gives you the opportunity to conduct assessments against existing codebases and determine where issues may exist before the buyer gets involved in code quality issues or licensing problems. Brennan also goes to say that “OVS allows not only the Americas, but for organizations around the world [to] demonstrate taking something that is a global, acceptable best practice by the OWASP individuals and experts… [so it] can be utilized in a commercial way very easily and quite honestly very accepted.” OVS is providing a global standard of expectations for consumers of software.

The 2020 election season for the Black community saw a lot of disunities especially when it came to the Joe Biden/Kamala Harris ticket. Some Black men and Black women cried out for ‘quid pro quo' something for their vote, all the while others attacked them for in some way supporting Trump. OvS discusses why this approach was misguided.

Dr. Carolini Kaid, Ph.D. is the Co-Founder & CSO at Vyro Biotherapeutics (https://en.vyrobio.com/), a Brazilian biotechnology company focused on developing cancer-killing, or ‘oncolytic' viruses (OVs) designed to target pediatric and adult brain cancer. Dr. Kaid is also a Postdoctoral Fellow at Center for Human Genome and Stem Cell Studies, at The University of São Paulo (USP), a public university in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, which is the largest Brazilian public university and the country's most prestigious educational institution (https://bv.fapesp.br/en/pesquisador/6...). Dr. Kaid has her Ph.D. in Cancer Genetics, a Master's degree in Cancer Biology, and an undergraduate degree in Genetics, all from USP. Dr. Kaid completed 10 years of experience in cancer biology research, including CNS tumor research, tumor stem cells, and advanced therapies. During her MsC, Dr. Kaid worked with miR-367 as a biomarker for aggressive pediatric cancer and potential therapeutic target, which led to the 2015 Award of Scientist and Entrepreneur of the Year, by Nanocell Institute. As a PhD student, under the mentorship of Dr. Oswaldo Keith Okamoto, she acquired a broad background in pre-clinical models, with specific training and expertise in cell culture, brain histology, molecular genetics, stereotaxic surgery, and stereology. Her PhD Thesis, was awarded with Brazil's Best PhD Thesis 2020, resulting in two patent applications and pre-clinical findings that opened opportunities for future translational studies to evaluate new putative biomarkers of aggressive stem-like tumor cells in refining diagnosis, patient stratification, and early detection of relapsed disease. Her work also revealed novel therapeutic approaches, using an miR-367 inhibitor and the oncolytic Zika virus, both targeting the stem-like tumor cells that could benefit patients affected by CNS tumors lacking effective treatment. Recently, as postdoctoral fellow at Human Genome and Stem Cell Research Center, under Dr. Mayana Zatz supervision, she continues to investigate alternative immunotherapies with a focus on oncolytic viruses and is coordinating a veterinary clinical trial using the oncolytic Zika virus in dogs with advanced brain tumors.

Luister gerus verder: See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Riaperture attività: avanti piano o troppo in fretta? Important Events 1799 Today is the birthday of the British botanist, pomologist, pioneer orchidologist, and flower show organizer, John Lindley. Lindley's dad was a nurseryman, and he ran a commercial nursery in England. Despite his array of botanical talents and knowledge, the family was constantly under financial duress. Growing up in his father's nursery, helped Lindley acquire the knowledge to land his first job as a seed merchant. This position led to a chain of events that would shape Lindley's life. First, he met the botanist William Jackson Hooker. And, second, Hooker introduced him to Sir Joseph Banks. Lindley worked as an assistant in the Banks herbarium. In 1938 after Banks died, when the fate of Kew Gardens hung in the balance, it was Lindley who recommended that the gardens belonged to the people and that they should become the botanical headquarters for England. The government rejected Lindley's proposal and decided to close the garden. But, on February 11, 1840, Lindley ingeniously demanded that the issue be put before the Parliament. His advocacy brought the matter to the people; the garden-loving public was not about to lose the Royal Botanic. And, so, Lindley saved Kew Gardens, and William Hooker was chosen as the new director. From his humble beginnings to his incredible standing in English Botanical History, Lindley is remembered fondly for so many accomplishments. For 43 years, Lindley served as secretary to the Royal Horticultural Society, which is why the RHS Library is called the Lindley Library. And, there are over 200 plant species named for Lindley. There is "lindleyi", "lindleyana", "lindleyanum", "lindleya" and "lindleyoides". Lindley once told his friend, the botanist Ludwig Reichenbach, "I am a dandy in my herbarium." Without question, Lindley's favorite plants were orchids. Before Lindley, not much was known about orchids. Thanks to Lindley, the genus Orchidaceae was shortened to orchid – which is much more friendly to pronounce. And, when he died, Lindley's massive orchid collection was moved to a new home at Kew. Lindley's friend, the botanist Ludwig Reichenbach, wrote a touching tribute after his Lindley died. He wrote, "We cannot tell how long Botany, how long science, will be pursued; but we may affirm that so long as a knowledge of plants is considered necessary, so long will Lindley's name be remembered with gratitude." And here's a little-remembered factoid about Lindley - he was blind in one eye. 1806 Today Meriwether Lewis described a tree he referred to in his journal as "Fir No. 5." The tree in question was the Douglas-fir. Later, on February 9, Lewis added more details about the fir and sketched the distinctive bract of the cone in his journal. On their way back across the northern Rocky Mountains of Idaho and Montana, Lewis and Clark would encounter the inland variation of the species, the Rocky Mountain Douglas-fir. The Douglas-Fir gets its name from the botanist David Douglas, who was the first to grow the tree in England successfully. When Douglas met an early death, his friend and teacher, the botanist John Goldie, planted a Douglas-Fir next to his house to remember his young friend. The lifespan of a Douglas-Fir Tree ranges from 500 to 1,000 years. And, Douglas-Firs are very large trees - reaching heights of 60 feet tall and up to 25 feet wide. In the wild, they sometimes reach over 200 feet tall. This massive tree is too big for residential landscaping. The bark of a Douglas Fir gets thicker over time, and that dense layer of bark enables the tree to survive forest fires with only some blackened bark. 1806 Today is the birthday of the Austrian botanist and explorer Friedrich Welwitsch. Welwitsch found a second home in the country of Portugal, where he served as the director Of the botanic gardens in Lisbon. Welwitsch had some amazing experiences during his lifetime, but the pinnacle was clearly the day he discovered the Welwitschia mirabilis. The mirabilis refers to its unusual form. Portugal had to send him to Africa to collect plants - which he did for seven years. In 1860, Welwitsch discovered a strange-looking plant that is actually a tree - a conifer and a gymnosperm - in terms of botanical classification. The Africans called it "Mr. Big." The Welwitschia is endemic to Namibian deserts, and it's also present on the Namibian coat of arms. When Welwitsch discovered this unique plant which can live for more than 1500 years and bears only two leaves in its entire lifecycle, he was so astonished that he "could do nothing but kneel down and gaze at it, half in fear lest a touch should prove it a figment of the imagination." Imagine a two-tentacled octopus with very long arms and a red floral bouquet for a head, and you have the Welwitschia mirabilis. Welwitschia's two leaves grow continually throughout the life of a plant. The pair of leaves are broad, leathery, and belt-shaped. Incredibly, some specimens, tested with carbon 14, are over 2000 years old. There is a spectacular photo of Welwitsch seated behind a large welwitschia mirabilis. He's wearing a pith helmet, and the plant's leaves are clearly many times longer than Welwitschia's arms and legs, which are mostly obscured by the plant. In 1862, Joseph Dalton Hooker described the plant in The Gardener's Chronicle as "the ugliest yet botanically magnificent plant in the world among centuries-old plants." 1896 Today the New England Botanical Club was founded by seven Professional and ten amateur botanists. The club was established to study New England and Alpine Flora. Dues were set at $2/year. The late 1800s ushered in several scientific organizations - like the American Philosophical Society, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the Massachusetts Audubon Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. What distinguished the New England Botanical Club was the fact that it welcomed amateurs as well as professionals. The early meetings were held in member's homes. Charles Sprague Sargent of the Arnold Arboretum was reputed to be a wonderful host. The club began as a gentleman's club; it would not officially admit women until 1968. Focused on botany, the group went on regular field trips - and they published a scholarly Journal called Rhodora. The group was looking for a one-word title, and so they held a vote. The options were Rhodora, Oakesia, Wasonia, Bigelovia, Gayia, and Nova anglia. The name Rhodora was created to reflect the clubs focus on studying the flora in the natural range of Rhododendron lapponicum - with the common name Lapland rosebay. Today, the NEBC is a non-profit organization that promotes the study of plants of North America, especially the flora of New England and adjacent areas. 1935 Today is the birthday of the influential landscape architect and author James Van Sweden. Van Sweden was an early pioneer in developing a new look and feel for American Landscapes, and his style is called The New American Garden. signature elements of the new American Garden are broad sweeps of flowering perennials and wild grasses. In 1975, van Sweden partnered with Wolfgang Oehme, and together they started their firm now known as Uehme van Sweden or OvS. Many gardeners remember that James created a purple Meadow for Oprah Winfrey's South Bend Indiana estate. In his book, architecture in the garden, Van Sweden wrote, "As I pulled up to Oprah Winfrey's front door for the first time, my immediate impression was that her house was divorced from its setting. Built in an elegant French-Chateau style, the house was visibly uncomfortable with the matter-of-fact Midwestern farmland that surrounded it. Nothing had been done to ease the transition from one to the other— the house and the site weren't talking. Over the next four years, we worked together to create an architectural context around the house, including newly-installed terraces and walls. The materials we selected, brick framed with the Limestone, echo the house, yet this architecture also conformed to the surrounding countryside, adopting its long, horizontal lines. In this way, we quite literally pulled out into the site." Van Sweden's books include The Artful Garden: Creative Inspiration for Landscape Design (2011), Architecture in the Garden (2003), and Gardening with Nature (1997). Unearthed Words Here are some words about February: "Probably more pests can be controlled in an armchair in front of a February fire with a garden notebook and a seed catalog than can ever be knocked out in hand-to-hand combat in the garden." — Neely Turner, State Entomologist & Vice Director, Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, 1927 - 1968 Come when the rains Have glazed the snow and clothed the trees with ice, While the slant sun of February pours Into the bowers, a flood of light. Approach! The incrusted surface shall upbear thy steps And the broad arching portals of the grove Welcome thy entering. — William Cullen Bryant, American Romantic poet, A Winter Piece I stood beside a hill Smooth with new-laid snow, A single star looked out From the cold evening glow. There was no other creature That saw what I could see-- I stood and watched the evening star As long as it watched me. — Sara Teasdale, American Lyric poet, February Twilight Grow That Garden Library Winter World by Bernd Heinrich The subtitle of this book is: The Ingenuity of Animal Survival. The author of numerous bestselling and award-winning books, Bernd Heinrich, is a professor of biology at the University of Vermont. He divides his time between Vermont and the forests of western Maine. From flying squirrels to grizzly bears, and from torpid turtles to insects with antifreeze, the animal kingdom relies on some staggering evolutionary innovations to survive winter. Unlike their human counterparts, who must alter the environment to accommodate physical limitations, animals are adaptable to an amazing range of conditions. Examining everything from food sources in the extremely barren winter landscape to the chemical composition that allows certain creatures to survive, Heinrich's Winter World awakens the largely undiscovered mysteries by which nature sustains herself through winter's harsh, cruel exigencies. The Happy Huntsman's Tree is an Oak tree that honors the 8th Earl of Harrington - Charles Augustus Stanhope, who died on this day at the age of 73. When he died, Charles was one of the largest landowners in England, with estates totaling over 13,000 acres. Charles was the first business person to open a store in London under his own name. Selling fruit from his garden, his store closed after a few seasons. Gardeners would be delighted by his home at Elvaston Castle, which was settled among the most magnificent topiary; trees shrubs and hedges were fashioned into men, animals, pyramids, and fans. Even though one of his arms was useless, Charles was an active person. He was one of the pioneers of polo in England, and he also played as an old man. Vanity Fair published a caricature of him playing polo - sitting atop his horse with his potbelly and white flowing beard. And, Charles was an avid Huntsman. He was a master of the South Knot Hunt for over 30 years. During hunting season, he hunted six days a week. His obituary said that he never missed a hunt unless he happened to be laid up with broken bones from a fall. At Elvaston castle, there was a little workshop where Charles liked to tinker with projects. At the end of his life, Charles was badly burned while working there. He was making a picture frame, and he accidentally bumped his left hand against the pipe of a stove. After treating it with oil, he developed blood poisoning and died. Charles left specific instructions in his will that upon his death, his hounds should be let out to hunt. Family lore says that when Charles was buried, the hounds bounded into the graveyard and gathered around the oak tree near the family crypt. They would not leave and could not be coaxed away. The tree the hounds were fixated on was dubbed the Happy Huntsman's Tree. There's a small plaque beneath it oh today it still stands in the graveyard of Saint Bartholomew's Church Derbyshire ("Dar-bee-shur").

How Intel docs were misinterpreted by almost any OS, a look at the mininet SDN emulator, do’s and don’ts for FreeBSD, OpenBSD community going gold, ed mastery is a must read, and the distributed object store minio on FreeBSD. Headlines Intel documentation flaw sees instruction misimplemented in almost every OS A statement in the System Programming Guide of the Intel 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer's Manual (SDM) was mishandled in the development of some or all operating-system kernels, resulting in unexpected behavior for #DB exceptions that are deferred by MOV SS or POP SS, as demonstrated by (for example) privilege escalation in Windows, macOS, some Xen configurations, or FreeBSD, or a Linux kernel crash. That presentation was focused on the OpenBSD version of the port, and I breezed past the detail that I also had a version or Mininet working on FreeBSD. Because I was given the opportunity, I’d like to share a bit about the FreeBSD version of Mininet. It will not only be about what Mininet is and why it might be interesting, but also a recounting of my experience as a user making a first-time attempt at porting an application to FreeBSD. Mininet started off as a tool used by academic researchers to emulate OpenFlow networks when they didn’t have convenient access to actual networks. Because of its history, Mininet became associated strongly with networks that use OpenFlow for their control channels. But, it has also become fairly popular among developers working in, and among several universities for research and teaching about, SDN (Software Defined Networking) I began using Mininet as an intern at my university’s network research lab. I was using FreeBSD by that time, and wasn’t too happy to learn that Mininet wouldn’t work on anything but Linux. I gradually got tired of having to run a Linux VM just to use Mininet, and one day it clicked in my mind that I can actually try porting it to FreeBSD. Mininet creates a topology using the resource virtualization features that Linux has. Specifically, nodes are bash processes running in network namespaces, and the nodes are interconnected using veth virtual Ethernet links. Switches and controllers are just nodes whose shells have run the right commands to configure a software switch or start a controller application. Mininet can therefore be viewed as a series of Python libraries that run the system commands necessary to create network namespaces and veth interfaces, assemble a specified topology, and coordinate how user commands aimed at nodes (since they are just shells) are run. Coming back to the port, I chose to use vnet jails to replace the network namespaces, and epair(4) links to replace the veth links. For the SDN functionality, I needed at least one switch and controller that can be run on FreeBSD. I chose OpenvSwitch(OVS) for the switch, since it was available in ports and is well-known by the SDN world, and Ryu for the controller since it’s being actively developed and used and supports more recent versions of OpenFlow. I have discussed the possibility of upstreaming my work. Although they were excited about it, I was asked about a script for creating VMs with Mininet preinstalled, and continuous integration support for my fork of the repository. I started taking a look at the release scripts for creating a VM, and after seeing that it would be much easier to use the scripts if I can get Mininet and Ryu added to the ports tree, I also tried a hand at submitting some ports. For CI support, Mininet uses Travis, which unfortunately doesn’t support FreeBSD. For this, I plan to look at a minimalistic CI tool called contbuild, which looks simple enough to get running and is written portably. This is very much a work-in-progress, and one going at a glacial pace. Even though the company that I work for does use Mininet, but doesn’t use FreeBSD, so this is something that I’ve been working on in my free time. Earlier on, it was the learning curve that made progress slow. When I started, I hadn’t done anything more than run FreeBSD on a laptop, and uneventfully build a few applications from the ports tree. Right off the bat, using vnet jails meant learning how to build and run a custom kernel. This was the easy part, as the handbook was clear about how to do this. When I moved from using FreeBSD 10.3 to 11, I found that I can panic my machine by quickly creating and destroying OVS switches and jails. I submitted a bug report, but decided to go one step further and actually try to debug the panic for myself. With the help of a few people well-versed in systems programming and the developer’s handbook, I was able to come up with a fix, and get it accepted. This pretty much brings my porting experiment to the present day, where I’m slowly working out the pieces that I mentioned earlier. In the beginning, I thought that this Mininet port would be a weekend project where I come out knowing thing or two about using vnet jails and with one less VM to run. Instead, it became a crash course in building and debugging kernels and submitting bug reports, patches, and ports. It’d like to mention that I wouldn’t have gotten far at all if it weren’t for the helpful folks, the documentation, and how debuggable FreeBSD is. I enjoy good challenges and learning experiences, and this has definitely been both. Thank you to Ayaka for working to port Mininet to the BSDs, and for sharing her experiences with us. If you want to see the OpenBSD version of the talk, the video from AsiaBSDCon is here, and it will be presented again at BSDCan. **iXsystems** [iXsystems LFNW Recap](https://www.ixsystems.com/blog/lfnw-2018-recap/) 10 Beginner Do's and Don't for FreeBSD 1) Don't mix ports and binary packages 2) Don't edit 'default' files 3) Don't mess with /etc/crontab 4) Don't mess with /etc/passwd and /etc/groups either! 5) Reconsider the removal of any options from your customized kernel configuration 6) Don't change the root shell to something else 7) Don't use the root user all the time 8) /var/backups is a thing 9) Check system integrity using /etc/mtree 10) What works for me doesn't have to work for you! We've all seen the threads on mailing lits, USENET news groups and web forums about the relative merits of Emacs vs vi, including endless iterations of flame wars, and sometimes even involving lesser known or non-portable editing environments. And then of course, from the Linux newbies we have seen an endless stream of tweeted graphical 'memes' about the editor vim (aka 'vi Improved') versus the various apparently friendlier-to-some options such as GNU nano. Apparently even the 'improved' version of the classical and ubiquitous vi(1) editor is a challenge even to exit for a significant subset of the younger generation. Yes, your choice of text editor or editing environment is a serious matter. Mainly because text processing is so fundamental to our interactions with computers. But for those of us who keep our systems on a real Unix (such as OpenBSD or FreeBSD), there is no real contest. The OpenBSD base system contains several text editors including vi(1) and the almost-emacs mg(1), but ed(1) remains the standard editor. Now Michael Lucas has written a book to guide the as yet uninitiated to the fundamentals of the original Unix text editor. It is worth keeping in mind that much of Unix and its original standard text editor written back when the standard output and default user interface was more likely than not a printing terminal. To some of us, reading and following the narrative of Ed Mastery is a trip down memory lane. To others, following along the text will illustrate the horror of the world of pre-graphic computer interfaces. For others again, the fact that ed(1) doesn't use your terminal settings much at all offers hope of fixing things when something or somebody screwed up your system so you don't have a working terminal for that visual editor. DigitalOcean Digital Ocean Promo Link for BSD Now Listeners Distributed Object Storage with Minio on FreeBSD Free and open source distributed object storage server compatible with Amazon S3 v2/v4 API. Offers data protection against hardware failures using erasure code and bitrot detection. Supports highly available distributed setup. Provides confidentiality, integrity and authenticity assurances for encrypted data with negligible performance overhead. Both server side and client side encryption are supported. Below is the image of example Minio setup. Architecture Diagram The Minio identifies itself as the ZFS of Cloud Object Storage. This guide will show You how to setup highly available distributed Minio storage on the FreeBSD operating system with ZFS as backend for Minio data. For convenience we will use FreeBSD Jails operating system level virtualization. Setup The setup will assume that You have 3 datacenters and assumption that you have two datacenters in whose the most of the data must reside and that the third datacenter is used as a ‘quorum/witness’ role. Distributed Minio supports up to 16 nodes/drives total, so we may juggle with that number to balance data between desired datacenters. As we have 16 drives to allocate resources on 3 sites we will use 7 + 7 + 2 approach here. The datacenters where most of the data must reside have 7/16 ratio while the ‘quorum/witness’ datacenter have only 2/16 ratio. Thanks to built in Minio redundancy we may loose (turn off for example) any one of those machines and our object storage will still be available and ready to use for any purpose. Jails First we will create 3 jails for our proof of concept Minio setup, storage1 will have the ‘quorum/witness’ role while storage2 and storage3 will have the ‘data’ role. To distinguish commands I type on the host system and storageX Jail I use two different prompts, this way it should be obvious what command to execute and where. WeI know the FreeNAS people have been working on integrating this Best practises for pledge(2) security Let's set the record straight for securing kcgi CGI and FastCGI applications with pledge(2). This is focussed on secure OpenBSD deployments. Theory Internally, kcgi makes considerable use of available security tools. But it's also designed to be invoked in a secure environment. We'll start with pledge(2), which has been around on OpenBSD since version 5.9. If you're reading this tutorial, you're probably on OpenBSD, and you probably have knowledge of pledge(2). How to begin? Read kcgi(3). It includes canonical information on which pledge(2) promises you'll need for each function in the library. This is just a tutorial—the manpage is canonical and overrides what you may read here. Next, assess the promises that your application needs. From kcgi(3), it's easy to see which promises we'll need to start. You'll need to augment this list with whichever tools you're also using. The general push is to start with the broadest set of required promises, then restrict as quickly as possible. Sometimes this can be done in a single pledge(2), but other times it takes a few.
