The Detroit streets have birthed a number of dynamic legendary artists from Jazz to Blues to Hip-Hop. Motor City native J. Cobb is geared to be added to the roster, as the emerging rap star brings his diverse musical background to everything he creates. Classically trained on the piano, J. was always intrigued by not only classical music, but the sounds of Motown and bridging the gap between his playing music and writing lyrics. His environment also nurtured him greatly. "Growing up in Detroit is what truly made me who I am: humble, hardworking, fearless, and driven," he says. "It's interesting though because I've always felt I existed between these two polar-opposite universes and this really started as a child growing up in Detroit, but attending a private school in a suburb outside the city." J. Cobb brings his truth to his music with no holds barred. "My personal goal is to create the best music I can," he says of his personal ethos. Each project is a reflection of that. https://www.instagram.com/thisisj.cobb/

In this episode of PoPolitickin, we are joined the one and only Ras Kass. John Austin, Watts, California, USA. A keen student of African history, Austin took the name of a king from the ancient kingdom of Shoa. He made his debut in the mid-90s, appearing on a series of mix tapes and earning particular acclaim for 1994’s hard-hitting ‘Remain Anonymous’. The underground success of the track boosted Ras Kass’ reputation, and he performed on ‘Come Widdit’ from the Street Fighter soundtrack. His debut, 1996’s Soul On Ice, took its name from a book by former Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver. The album confirmed Ras Kass’ reputation as one of the west coast’s most literate MCs, with his multi-syllabic delivery earning comparisons to leading rappers such as Rakim. Despite the critical plaudits the album failed to sell, and Ras Kass was pushed into pursuing a more commercial direction. Rasassination eschewed the socially conscious lyrics of his earlier work in an attempt to tap into the lucrative west coast market, but its commercial failure put Ras Kass’ career on the backburner. He teamed up with Canibus, Kurupt and Killah Priest in Hrsmn prior to the release of his long delayed third album, Van Gogh. https://music.youtube.com/channel/UCmNriPWyiSyo4E7gfFLG_pQ

Authenticity in rap is rare. But it’s Brandon “Beejus” Robinson’s forte. The Bay Area-based musician has spent years crafting and developing his style and learning the industry. While many MCs see pursuing music as their way to gain fame and riches, Beejus is more concerned with sharing his free-spirited ways with the world. His undeniable ability to connect with audiences has impressed listeners and concertgoers and positioned him as an entertainer and artist, not just a rapper. Inspired by all walks of life, Beejus’ sound matches his “FreeSpirit” brand perfectly. “I’ll never box myself in.” A motto he’s had since his teenage years fuels his “method to the madness”, but all over the place style of being. His music is deep enough for seasoned music heads to appreciate, while fun enough that the party-goers will sing along and dance as well. While always speaking on positivity and self-betterment, his West Oakland California upbringing adds a very real element that makes his music and persona so relatable and leaves a lasting impression on everyone who hears it. Hip-Hop in its truest form, is poetry, it’s a more reflective view on situations in culture, politics, and it often expresses the artists’ opinion on everyday life. Due to hip-hop’s growing popularity and commercialization, much of that authenticity and artistry has been lost. But then there’s the exception, raised in a small town in New Jersey, called Irvington, MoRuf Adewunmi, better know as MoRuf. Has managed to grow a cult-like following by just being honest, with clever rhymes, and a storytelling ability that remind you of young “Mighty Mos”. It’s safe to say, that his movement: L.O.E., which stands for Love Over Everything, is a return to the golden era of Hip-Hop, when the size of your chain, meant nothing, and the focus was spreading positivity to the masses. To say MoRuf is a breath of fresh air, would be rather cliché, let’s say he’s artist in every sense of the word; reflective, thought provoking, yet entertaining. Bless up!

While I believe we are all given individual talents and skills, and I believe we have a duty to use those talents and skills to the best of our ability, very few of us are blessed with a calling. It is so rare that we are hit over the head with a pre-chosen destiny, that we have no choice but to follow that path all the way through. Some authors, songwriters, and artists experience this. Where they feel as though they are simply a conduit for their medium. It’s exactly why I am doing this podcast. And it is this calling that emerged within one of the founders of conscious hip hop, Speech Thomas. Creating Arrested Development in the early ’90s, Speech saw fame, fortune, and success at a very young age. But that didn’t mean it came overnight. Speech started out like most rappers, speaking about all the typical things. But once he came to Atlanta and found another like-minded voice in the hip hop community, all that changed. Thanks to the influence of groups like public enemy and BDP, the conscious rap genre emerged. And thanks to groups like arrested development, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and many others, a new stream of thought found its place in the hip hop world. This voice was different, this message stood for something and as soon as it was recognized for what it was and the impact it was making, it was promptly shut down. Back to the same stereotypically images the entertainment industry wants you to see, especially that of black life and culture. But Speech never let this slow him down. Despite struggles within the band and a solo career that never materialized stateside, Speech kept with music and the mission. Most recently taking a big leap into the field of Documentaries, Speech has chronicled the systematic exploitation of the black image in a 3 part docu-series out now. And coming out this week is his groundbreaking new documentary “16 Bars”. This full-length feature film takes you inside County jail, spending time with inmates, and producing an album that gives a voice to those who don’t have one. And what a voice! His compassion for his fellow man has given Speech his calling, and that calling keeps him constantly moving, growing, and speaking. Check out my recent conversation with Arrested Development frontman, 2-time Grammy winner, and one of the most conscious humans you will ever meet, my man, Speech….

Growing up in a very religious home where both her parents are pastors they would not allow her to listen to rap music or anything that promoted profanity. She is the second to youngest child of 5 brothers and 1 sister. SheGo was forced to join choirs and sing in churches but also took it upon herself to study the music she preferred listening too. While creating her own sound she found herself dropping remixes on SoundCloud and it gained the attention of her classmates at the several schools she attended. On March 4th 2019 SheGo Turbo released her first solo project “After Hurt”. Her unique flow, and harmonic melodies draws you in the minute you plug her into your speaker.
