S1Ep202 How to Properly Evaluate a Franchise with Turp Ricketts

The Business Growth Show

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 10, 2024 44:56

When evaluating a franchise, many entrepreneurs struggle to figure out where to begin. Selecting the right opportunity isn't just about brand recognition or financial potential—it's about understanding the key factors that can make or break your success as a franchisee. Franchise ownership can be a lucrative path, but making an informed choice requires insight into how different franchise systems work, what support structures are in place, and how those align with your personal and financial goals. Turp Ricketts, President of Franchise Development at HorsePower Brands, emphasizes that one of the most important steps in evaluating a franchise is examining the level of support offered by the franchisor. While brand power may seem attractive, the long-term success of franchisees often depends on the resources available to them. HorsePower Brands, for example, provides call center support, tailored financing programs, and national partnerships that enable franchise owners to focus on growing their business, rather than getting bogged down by administrative tasks. This kind of support is often an overlooked yet critical aspect when determining the true value of a franchise system. Another critical factor is understanding the scalability of the franchise. A strong franchise system provides not only the initial tools for success but also offers pathways for long-term growth. Ricketts points out that evaluating a franchise means understanding how well it can adapt to market changes, whether through innovative marketing strategies or providing the technology and infrastructure that franchisees need to stay competitive. Whether the franchise involves home services or another industry, the ability to expand and scale your business is something that must be factored into the decision-making process. An often-understated element when evaluating a franchise is the franchisee's own ability to execute. While the franchise system can provide all the necessary tools, it ultimately comes down to whether the owner can effectively manage teams, sales processes, and customer relationships. Personal accountability and execution are key to making any franchise investment worthwhile. Many entrepreneurs mistakenly think the franchisor will handle everything for them. While strong systems are crucial, success requires a hands-on approach and the ability to adapt to the demands of the local market. It's also important to assess how well the franchise system addresses common business challenges, particularly in areas such as marketing, staffing, and customer acquisition. One of the most common hurdles franchisees face is balancing the support from the national brand with localized efforts. Franchisees often expect the franchisor to drive all the business through national marketing efforts, but real success happens when owners take personal responsibility for local marketing and building relationships within their community. The ability to combine both local and national marketing strategies is often the key to standing out in a competitive market and avoiding becoming just another commodity. Evaluating a franchise also involves a deep dive into the culture of the franchise system. Ricketts emphasizes the importance of ensuring that the franchise culture aligns with the personal values and leadership style of the prospective franchisee. This can be a key predictor of long-term success. Understanding the culture also means looking at how well the franchisor listens to and supports its franchisees. Is there a collaborative environment where franchisees can share insights and solutions? A franchise system that fosters open communication and continuous improvement can provide a competitive edge in the marketplace. Watch the full episode on YouTube. For anyone looking to evaluate a franchise, it's clear that success lies in more than just selecting a well-known brand. Thoroughly understanding the support structures, scalability, market strategy, and culture of the franchise system are all essential to making the right investment decision. A franchise can be a powerful vehicle for financial growth, but it requires careful consideration of both the franchisor's offerings and your own ability to execute. In this episode, we have the pleasure of hosting the incredible Zach Beutler, Founding Partner of Horsepower Brands, who's a total rockstar when it comes to franchise development. With over 15 brands and close to 5000 territories under his belt, Zach is here to drop some serious knowledge bombs.Territory strategy is absolutely crucial when it comes to building a successful franchise, and Zach dives headfirst into this topic. But hey, let's get one thing straight - territories don't automatically equal moolah. It's all about the placements, baby! Zach spills the beans on how to build up those metro markets with more owners and optimize truck density per metro. Oh, and did we mention that Horsepower Brands averages just over 3 territories per placement? They're all about growing the brand and individual territories, giving the franchis owner more earning potential! Now, let's talk about one of the biggest mistakes in franchising - giving away too much territory. It's like having a big ol' pizza and only taking a tiny bite, ya feel? According to Zach, many businesses make this mistake, building territories that are way too big. But profitable concepts are all about density, baby! Zach spills the tea on how to optimize that Geographical Business Plan (GBP) and operate within a 2.5 mile radius for optimal results. Oh, and he even gives a rad example of splitting Dallas along the George Bush Turnpike border. Talk about mapping like a boss! But wait, there's more! Zach breaks down the key steps to building an optimal mapping strategy. Pre-mapping the country is a must, but don't forget to pay attention to those county rules, my friend. Permitting and licensing laws can be a total buzzkill, so make sure you're in the know. And hey, understanding true demographic behavior is a game-changer. Different income levels require different marketing approaches, so don't sleep on those lower-income sectors. They could be your ticket to some serious revenue!Oh, and let's not forget about multi-packs, baby! Zach spills the beans on how to determine how many to sell. It's all about finding that sweet spot, my friend. And hey, don't go giving away your territory like it's Halloween candy. Territory is a limited commodity, so hold onto it tight. If you need some expert guidance or professional services to nail that mapping strategy, don't hesitate to reach out.Get ready to level up your franchise game with Zach's amazing insights. We are revisiting one of our most top downloaded shows with guests, Zach Beutler & Josh Skolnick of Horse Power Brands. In this episode, Zach and Josh discuss their key learnings from more than ten years of franchising. The largest roadblock to an entrepreneur's success is succumbing to the shoulda, coulda, and woulda's of life. But, whether you're interested in franchising or other business models, Josh believes that in order to go past this, one must leap into the unknown. In this episode, you will learn:•        Zach and Josh – on failures and bouncing back bigger and the brand so much stronger•        The ideal candidate for franchising and the basic process to get fit for a franchise•        Leading with transparency and integrity that care about people's success•         Actions speak louder than words; leap into business ownership•        Build your own dream and take control of your financial future•        And so much more! About Zach Beutler & Josh Skolnick: Josh Skolnick is the co-founder and CEO of Horse Power Brands, a home services franchisor and the parent company of Mighty Dog Roofing. Josh founded Monster Tree Service in 2008 and grew the brand to a multi-million-dollar U.S. network. Zachery Beutler is the co-founder and CDO of Horse Power Brands. He began his career in franchising as a young franchisee with Nebraska-based Complete Nutrition, later becoming a multi-unit franchisee of Color World Housepainting, Inc. The idea of HorsePower Brands began in 2019 when franchise veterans Josh Skolnick & Zach Beutler, determined to disrupt the franchise industry joined forces to form HorsePower Brands. Frustrated by the lack of accountability by franchisors to open and support franchisees the duo wanted to create a platform focused on operational excellence and accountability. Accountability starts with ownership and that's why they own at minimum a controlling interest in all the brands to which their ownership group attaches their names. All steps of selling a franchise opportunity and supporting franchise owners are handled under one roof by their staff. They have developed detailed and transparent franchise development strategies that allow them to responsibly award franchise opportunities to the right people. More importantly, they are open to all the franchise territories they award and have experienced operations teams to ensure their franchisees achieve their financial goals through business ownership.Website: www.horsepowerbrands.comPodcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/cr/podcast/disrupting-the-franchise-industry-zach-beutler-josh/id1499864638?i=1000551225392  Connect with Franchise Freedom...Website:          https://ggthefranchiseguide.com/podcast/Linkedin:          https://www.linkedin.com/company/gg-the-franchise-guideFacebook:       https://www.facebook.com/GGTheFranchiseGuideTwitter:            https://twitter.com/ggrammaticoInstagram:      https://www.instagram.com/gg_the_franchise_guide

Have you ever heard the sentiment that "Failure can be the greatest teacher?" For my guest, Zach Beutler, Co-Founder of HorsePower Brands, failure is what fueled his success in building some of the most desired franchise brands/opportunities in the home services industry today.   At the age of 20, with $20k in his pocket, Zach Beutler invested in his first franchise. But his journey did not come without challenges. He was faced with some tough times, mentally and financially, and found himself having to rebuild his career after having filed for bankruptcy at one point in time.   One quote you will see prevalent throughout all of the HorsePower brands marketing materials is by Mark Twain "Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions."   Today, Zach Beutler and Josh Skolnick have built a company (HorsePower Brands) with eight franchises within its portfolio with the goal of having 25 brands within its portfolio by the year 2025!   Zach and I dive into the value and unparalleled support HorsePower Brands provides its franchisees, including its innovative outlook on "empire building" within its portfolio of brands.
