S1Ep230 Simplifying the Franchise Decision Process with Ryan Zink

The Business Growth Show

Play Episode Listen Later May 8, 2025 43:36

Choosing the right franchise can feel like navigating a maze with no clear path—and high stakes at every turn. With hundreds of opportunities and little transparency, would-be franchisees are often left to rely on sales pitches, outdated directories, or gut instincts. The result? Missed opportunities, mismatched investments, and costly mistakes that could have been avoided. For those serious about franchising, the need for a better way forward is urgent. That's where Ryan Zink steps in. With over 20 years of experience in the franchise world—including three private equity exits, co-founding Complete Nutrition, Franchise FastLane, and now leading as CEO of Franchise Sidekick—he's reshaping the franchise decision process from the ground up. His mission is simple: help more people buy the right franchise, reduce risk, and set them up for long-term success. Rather than focusing solely on selling brands, Zink has taken the buyer's perspective. The goal isn't just to match people with a franchise—it's to equip them with the tools, insight, and structure they need to make informed, confident decisions. At Franchise Sidekick, that means vetting brands against a 150-point checklist, assessing everything from leadership and support systems to profitability and scalability. It's not just about who's selling; it's about whether the opportunity is worth buying. This structured approach to the franchise decision process is designed to reduce friction and increase transparency. Zink highlights how most prospective franchisees don't know what questions to ask—or who to trust. They're stepping into a world where financials vary widely, support is inconsistent, and expectations are often misaligned. Franchise Sidekick offers a solution: a process that empowers buyers through education, data, and strategic matchmaking. Zink also emphasizes the importance of brand readiness. Not every franchise is built to scale—and many don't have the systems, leadership, or support to sustain growth. By working closely with franchisors, his team ensures that only brands meeting specific criteria are positioned in front of qualified buyers. That alignment is key: a great candidate with the wrong brand is a recipe for frustration on both sides. The conversation also touches on what makes a great franchisee—not just financially, but mentally. Zink points out that while many people want to be business owners, not everyone is ready to operate within the structure a franchise requires. Success in franchising comes from following the system, trusting the process, and staying accountable. The right candidate has clarity on their role, knows what they're looking for, and is willing to put in the work. In today's fast-paced franchise industry, where private equity is accelerating brand growth and more people are entering entrepreneurship than ever before, the need for structure and support has never been greater. Simplifying the franchise decision process is about more than efficiency—it's about creating lasting success. When people are matched with the right opportunity, backed by the right support, they're more likely to thrive—and so is the brand. Ryan Zink is doing more than helping people buy franchises. He's changing how the industry thinks about the decision itself. And for those ready to take the leap, the difference between guessing and knowing can define the entire journey. We are revisiting one of our most top downloaded shows with guests, Zach Beutler & Josh Skolnick of Horse Power Brands. In this episode, Zach and Josh discuss their key learnings from more than ten years of franchising. The largest roadblock to an entrepreneur's success is succumbing to the shoulda, coulda, and woulda's of life. But, whether you're interested in franchising or other business models, Josh believes that in order to go past this, one must leap into the unknown. In this episode, you will learn:•        Zach and Josh – on failures and bouncing back bigger and the brand so much stronger•        The ideal candidate for franchising and the basic process to get fit for a franchise•        Leading with transparency and integrity that care about people's success•         Actions speak louder than words; leap into business ownership•        Build your own dream and take control of your financial future•        And so much more! About Zach Beutler & Josh Skolnick: Josh Skolnick is the co-founder and CEO of Horse Power Brands, a home services franchisor and the parent company of Mighty Dog Roofing. Josh founded Monster Tree Service in 2008 and grew the brand to a multi-million-dollar U.S. network. Zachery Beutler is the co-founder and CDO of Horse Power Brands. He began his career in franchising as a young franchisee with Nebraska-based Complete Nutrition, later becoming a multi-unit franchisee of Color World Housepainting, Inc. The idea of HorsePower Brands began in 2019 when franchise veterans Josh Skolnick & Zach Beutler, determined to disrupt the franchise industry joined forces to form HorsePower Brands. Frustrated by the lack of accountability by franchisors to open and support franchisees the duo wanted to create a platform focused on operational excellence and accountability. Accountability starts with ownership and that's why they own at minimum a controlling interest in all the brands to which their ownership group attaches their names. All steps of selling a franchise opportunity and supporting franchise owners are handled under one roof by their staff. They have developed detailed and transparent franchise development strategies that allow them to responsibly award franchise opportunities to the right people. More importantly, they are open to all the franchise territories they award and have experienced operations teams to ensure their franchisees achieve their financial goals through business ownership.Website: www.horsepowerbrands.comPodcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/cr/podcast/disrupting-the-franchise-industry-zach-beutler-josh/id1499864638?i=1000551225392  Connect with Franchise Freedom...Website:          https://ggthefranchiseguide.com/podcast/Linkedin:          https://www.linkedin.com/company/gg-the-franchise-guideFacebook:       https://www.facebook.com/GGTheFranchiseGuideTwitter:            https://twitter.com/ggrammaticoInstagram:      https://www.instagram.com/gg_the_franchise_guide

104 My Most Up To Date Immune Protocol

Health Mysteries Solved

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2021 22:32

The Investigation As we head into cold and flu season during the second year of the pandemic, it's important to provide support for your immune system - especially if you have an autoimmune disease like Hashimoto's, Lupus, MS, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Type 1 Diabetes, Addison's, Grave's, and Celiac disease.  As someone with Hashimoto's and who works with a lot of people with Hashimoto's I've created a protocol that I have been updating month after month and here is my latest version. This protocol is great for overall immunity and best of all, it is absolutely safe and recommended if you have an autoimmune disease as well.    Herbs & Supplements to Avoid with Autoimmunity I always need to remind those with autoimmunity that the supplements you often hear about for supporting the immune system can do real damage if you have an autoimmune disease. These supplements stimulate the immune system. For those with autoimmunity, an overstimulated immune system can lead to flare ups.  Here are the commonly suggested supplements to avoid: Echinacea  Astragalus  Reishi (or other immune supporting mushrooms) Elderberry My Autoimmune-safe Immune Support Protocol Here are the things that I take to give me the best chance for avoiding the flu, colds and other viruses as well as how I use them to decrease symptoms if I do get sick. These are my go-to recommendations:    Vitamin C For general immune support, I usually recommend for an average, 150lb adult, a dosage of 1000 - 2000 mg of vitamin C per day. I personally use C+Biofizz from Designs for Health which you plop in water for a fizzy drink (if you prefer capsules, try their Stellar C). Please note that if you experience loose stools when taking vitamin C, you may want to try liposomal vitamin C because it helps the body absorb through the mucous membranes in your mouth first (just remember to keep it refrigerated.)  If you are already sick, vitamin C can be very helpful in decreasing recovery time from infections, cold, flu or other viruses. You can increase your daily dosage but make sure you divide it and take it over the course of the day. That might mean taking 500 to 1000 mg of C (it can be powder, liposomal or capsules) every 30-60 min to bowel-tolerance (until you get diarrhea which is when your body says it's saturated and had enough). You would then restart it later in the day or next day. Do this for a few days when you are sick. There is a ton of research about high dose vitamin C in helping fight infections. Alternatively, you could look at getting a vitamin C infusion through an IV for prevention or treatment.    Vitamin D Vitamin D is imperative for many different things but specifically supporting your immune health. Many people have low vitamin D and it tends to decrease during our shorter winter days here in the Northern Hemisphere.  You can determine how much vitamin D you need by checking your levels through a blood test. Ideally, you want to be in the range of 50-80 on that test (the lab range is wider, typically 30-100).  If you don't know your vitamin D levels (and you're not regularly supplementing) the typically recommended daily dose is 5,000, IU.  If you are already sick, you will want to make sure that you are also taking vitamin K with your vitamin D to prevent calcification of tissues and organs. You can either take a vitamin K supplement or a multivitamin with vitamin K.  I use Vitamin D Supreme which is a capsule but if you have issues with fat soluble vitamins, you could try a liquid form of vitamin D or, if you also struggle with energy issues, you could try Hi-Po Emulsi D3 from Designs for Health.    Zinc & Quercetin There has been a lot of talk about Zinc online and in the media lately as a great way to boost your immune system during the COVID pandemic and into cold and flu season. What many people don't realize is that Zinc mainly stays outside the cell and you want it inside the cell for optimal immune support. One natural way to do that is by taking it alongside Quercetin. I take Designs for Health's Quercetin and Nettles blend and I recommend 250 milligrams to about 500 milligrams daily.  Quercetin is something that I've added to my protocol a bit more recently because I'm seeing such great results. When combined with zinc, it's great for both prevention and also healing from infection. Please keep in mind that extended use of zinc can cause a copper deficiency so you want to make sure you are balancing these two minerals. If you are taking zinc for a long time, consider supplementing with copper or a multivitamin that contains copper. To be extra sure that you aren't deficient in copper (which can have serious health repercussions), a hair analysis will reveal both your copper and zinc levels. If you already have recent hair test results, you would want to look at, not just the individual zinc or the copper level, but actually, the ratio of the two. Ideally, the zinc to copper ratio should be right around 8. If your levels are lower than 8, then you can use more zinc. If you are above 8, you would need to supplement with copper.   Garlic (Allicin) This one is a favorite because it really works and I typically don't see any side effects. Garlic has both antiviral and antimicrobial properties which means it can work on bacteria, yeast and other bugs in addition to viruses.  For general immune support, I don't recommend it long-term (unless your practitioner has you on a specific protocol).  Instead, consider garlic for immune support when you've been around someone who's sick, you've been exposed to a virus or when you feel like you're coming down with something. It can be difficult to get enough garlic in food form so supplementing is best. There are many on the market but my absolute favorite is Allimax. It's a potent (and patented) allicin extract which has all the benefit with way way less of that garlic odor.  I recommend 4-6 capsules a day for the duration of illness or for a few days if exposed or feeling off. I also give this to my kids when they come home with a runny nose or they've been exposed to a virus and it's really fantastic.    SPM's and Liposomal Glutathione Two things I've added recently to my immune support protocol are SPM's and liposomal glutathione.  SPM's stands for Pro Resolving Mediators and they literally go in and resolve inflammation. I think it's one of my most favorite vitamins these days. SPM is great at dealing with all types of inflammation so the immune system is more balanced. I use 1 per day for overall immune support and balance and up to 6 per day if you are sick for about a week. What is really neat about SPM's is that I have found it to work really great for autoimmune flare ups such as Hashimoto's flares and any other up ticks in autoimmunity. You would take 6 per day for about 7-10 days and then can lower to 1-3 per day for maintenance. I use it myself and really love it. There are two brands that I recommend for SPM. The first is Metagenics SPM Active which is a bit more potent but also a bit more expensive. I also like Designs for Health's SPM Supreme, which is less expensive but because it has slightly less and you have to take a bit more of it.  Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant and immune balancer that you can take every day. I typically recommend a teaspoon a day but if you're sick, you can increase that to one teaspoon twice a day.  There are a lot of different brands to choose from and after trying pretty much everything out there, I use Apex's Trizomal Glutathione. I find it to be the most potent and best absorbed out of all of the ones that I've tried. And it tastes better than some of the other glutathione I've tried.  Fermented Beverages for Gut Health Our microbiome is another key for balancing the immune system so it's important to support gut health. One thing that I've been getting really good results from is a fermented beverage called R's Koso. This Japanese fermented drink is made from more than a hundred different vegetables, fruits, and plants. In other words, it's full of plant fibers to feed the bugs that help keep our gut flora happy. Often we eat the same things day in and day out but our gut health needs more variety to stay healthy which is why this drink is so great. You can try it out at rskoso.com and use the promo code INNA10 to save 10%    Liquid Silver (Silvercillin) This last supplement has been on my list for a while and I still love it. Silvercillin is a powerful antimicrobial and it can be used orally or topically. I recommend taking 1-2 TBSP orally a few times a day when you are sick or if you know you've been exposed. I don't recommend this for long term use but it's great to have around the house. You can even use it topically to treat rashes, burns, cuts and even acne.    Healthy Immune Habits Nasal Rinse One habit that I think really helps to support my immune system is nasal irrigation. Some of you may have heard of a neti pot for clearing your nasal passage. I use something similar called the NeilMed but I find it easier to use. I like to add a tablespoon of Silvercillin mixed into the distilled water and salt solution I use for my nasal irrigation. It's a really great way to boost antimicrobial activity.    Stress Reduction Another important habit to adopt to help support your immune system is to be aware of your stress levels. Your immune system can't function optimally if you are in a chronic stress state. So, take a minute to reduce your stress by taking a few breaths, reframing things or even looking out at the sky and nature. It can really help to quiet the stress response.    Save on Immune Boosting I have all the products on my practice website Complete Nutrition and Wellness. Often when we think of health issues as a symptom of an unhealed betrayal we think on the grand scale of things, including cancer and heart disease. But did you know that everything from IBS, to skin issues, headaches, and chronic fatigue, could be a symptom of something greater? If you have experienced any type of health issue, there is a very good chance that an unhealed betrayal could be at the root of your symptoms.  Inna Topiler is a certified clinical nutritionist practicing a functional medicine approach to health, founder of Complete Nutrition and Wellness, Host of the Health Mysteries Solved Podcast, and so much more. While Inna did not start out to work in functional medicine, it was after a slew of her own health issues and a disappointment with the traditional treatment she received, that her passion to help others get to the root of their underlying health issues and reclaim their health began to take hold. Today Inna is here to give us a look at the connection between your head and heart and explore the vital roles these connections play in your ability to live your life to the fullest. Chronic illness can be a result of your body betraying you, and it is only by directly addressing these unresolved betrayals that you can remove the physical manifestation of betrayal and start healing your betrayal through loyalty.  If you are struggling with physical symptoms that you just can’t make sense of, Inna wants to encourage you to look into your past betrayals, start understanding the connection between the mind and the body, and acknowledge your symptoms so that you can breathe healing towards it. Now understanding what was happening, it was really really empowering for me.” (11:28) “If there is anything going on in the body that normally may not be a problem, it will be an issue because of that weak immune system that we created because of the stress, which is really due to this old betrayal piece that people don’t realize.” (17:42) “We shouldn’t be afraid to bring up the negative if we are doing it in a way that’s controlled. Almost that we are highlighting it for deletion, that’s how I like to see it.” (22:34) “Once we feel it, the goal is not to blame it or make it go away. [32:00] What to look for in a franchise [36:30] Discovery Day [37:40] Things you want to know [38:35] Best business decision Ryan has ever made Why would you want to consider outsourcing franchise development? As an emerging franchisor, the process of franchise development can seem daunting. Maybe you don’t have a regional developer in place that can help build out your franchise. Or the expansion you’re looking for just isn’t happening. But the number #1 reason we see franchisors looking to outsource development is that their passion lies in supporting and building relationships with their current franchisees. And you know what? This is 100% how it should be. When you invest in training and relationships with your existing franchisees you have a greater return on your investment. This is where Franchise Fastlane would come in as an FSO. The company acts as an extension of you. They would do the research and the work to find you quality franchisees to help take your company to the next level. Listen on as Ryan and I discuss franchise development and his passion behind founding Franchise Fastlane. Things to consider in the beginning phases of your franchise There are very few people who actually enjoy the development process—you have to be built for it. Your biggest challenge when diving in is deciding on what kind of growth you’re looking for. The biggest con may be that you have to be primed for the rapid growth of your business. If you just aren’t ready for that, odds are an FSO may not be the best fit for you. Ryan recommends, instead, to start with your close friends and family who trust you and your business model. They can be the early pioneers that test your process and validate that it can be profitable. You have to consider that there are a lot of risks that have to be assessed for those buying into a new franchise. Your brand isn’t recognizable yet, so are they going to have to invest in marketing? Will they recoup their additional investment in infrastructure? All of these things can make it difficult for you to recruit franchisees. But if you have a great system in place and are ready for growth—but just don't have the sales force to do it—definitely consider outsourcing your growth. Keep listening as we talk about the options in-depth. A Franchise Sales Organization that is doing its job will make sure your business is a good fit If you’ve already established that you are ready to roll out nationwide, you’d take the next step. The franchise consultant or sales organization will thoroughly vet your company to make sure they can actually help you. They look for things such as sufficient experience in franchising and if you can monetarily support the onboarding franchisees. Ryan’s team would then spend ample time with your current franchisees. They want to know if progress is being made with your franchise. They will cover every inch of your business model. They will learn the ins and outs, the good and the bad, and where attention may be needed. A FSO also needs to understand the time commitment a franchisee would be making as well as profit expectations and whether or not those were met. If you don’t have set processes and practices in place, you may need to go back to the drawing board and get a better plan in place. Remember, they have to not only be able to pitch your franchise to a candidate, but also find the best fit for your team culture. Continue listening as Ryan and I discuss what systems they’re looking for and types of businesses they would lean towards working with. What a Prospective Franchisee should keep in mind when going through the development process If you’re an entrepreneur hoping to buy into a franchise, what would be the benefit of going through an FSO? While many people prefer to go directly through a franchise, you need to remember this: 60% of inquiries about a franchise opportunity go unanswered. An FSO or consultant is vested in the franchise they’re working for, but also passionate about finding great franchisees. You will get the time and attention you deserve from us, guaranteed. We are doing the exact same job a regional developer with a franchise would be doing but not directly working within the franchise. Keep in mind that we’ve also already done all of the hard work up front—we know if this is a good organization for you to buy into. We’ve thoroughly vetted them, understand their company culture, and are uniquely positioned to be a resource for the franchisor and prospective franchisee. It isn’t just about the money. We also want to get to know you, who you are, what your experience is, and how involved you want to be. Keep listening to the rest of the podcast as we talk about more things you’d like to know—and the best business decision Ryan’s ever made. Health Mysteries Solved
010 The Case of the Embarrassing Eczema and Rash w/ Beth Mosher

Health Mysteries Solved

The Case: Karen is 31 and eats a very healthy diet. She started to experience eczema, rashes, and itchy skin as well as anxiety. Doctors prescribed topical steroids and antihistamines but these only masked the symptoms. Here condition escalated to swollen eyes and hives on her face. The Investigation When I met with Karen I suspected that her diet was to blame for her condition even though she was eating really healthy. I just knew there was something in her diet that was causing the problem; something was causing a histamine reaction. But, I also suspected it likely wasn’t a traditional food allergy. I brainstormed  with my partner at Complete Nutrition and Wellness, Beth Mosher. She’s a clinical nutritionist who has been studying nutrition and how it relates to health and human development for almost 20 years. I knew that together, we could solve this health mystery. We knew that it wasn’t a specific food allergy or sensitivity so we had to look at how else food could be impacting her. Allergic Reactions can be to Components of Foods Some people may have traditional tests that prove they are not allergic to a certain food but that does not necessarily mean that they won’t have an allergic reaction to a component of this food. Certain components of foods, particularly plant foods, produce histamine reactions. High Sulfur Foods Sulfur is found in a variety of foods in varying degrees. Leafy greens have a high amount of sulfur, especially spinach and kale. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli also contain sulfur. Protein can contain sulfur, specifically eggs and shrimp. Fermented foods including pickled foods, beer, and wine also contain high amounts of sulfites. Sulfur Can Cause a Histamine Reaction Many foods contain sulfur and while some sulfur is important for the body to function optimally, too much can create a backlog. When the body tries to metabolize this backlog of sulfur it can produce substances that create a histamine reaction. This can manifest as itchy skin, hives, swelling, or eczema. Genetics Also Plays a Role Not everyone who eats sulfur-rich foods is going to have this histamine reaction. Every body is different. One person may eat a diet high in sulfur with no adverse reaction because they are not predisposed to it genetically. Sulfites Can Build Up in the Body Sulfites can be quite toxic when they backup in the body (because they are not being properly processed) and can be converted into ammonia. Symptoms like hives, itchy skin, swollen lips and eyes, and eczema can appear to come out of nowhere. People who have not changed their diet at all might not think that food could be the cause because nothing has changed. However a diet (like the paleo diet) can cause sulfur build up overtime, which can reach a point where the body can no longer metabolize it and the result is a histamine reaction. Early Signs of Sulfite Buildup Sulfur generally produces a histamine reaction including hives, rashes, and itchiness around the eyes. However, a sulfur buildup in the early stages can present as headaches, itchy skin (without hives or rash), or digestive issues. Feelings of anxiety can also be a symptom of sulfur overload as metabolizing sulfur can release ammonia which in turn elevates cortisol (the stress hormone). Reducing high sulfite  foods and managing sulfur in general when these early signs show up could help reduce the chances of a full histamine reaction. Detoxing Sulfite Overload When detoxing the body of excess sulfites, it’s a good idea to take Epsom salt baths every day or every other day. Place a cup and a half of Epsom salts in a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes. This helps the body metabolize the backlog of sulfites and get the toxins out. Charcoal tablets may also help to absorb the ammonia and carry it out and molybdenum can help the SOUX enzyme process sulfites more efficiently. Testing for Sulfite Overload There are a few tests that can be done to prove the skin irritations are caused by a histamine reaction caused by sulfur overload. One is an organic acid test done through urine. There are also genetic tests that can be done. However, most people prove out the cause by lowering their consumption of sulfite rich  foods and seeing if the symptoms subside. We Need Sulfur Many high-sulfur foods are extremely healthy and our bodies need sulfur. However, if it is not processing it into sulfate (do to a blockage in the pathway caused by a buildup) then we need to address that. It’s important to find a balance and to be aware of the warning signs that there might be a backlog of sulfites in the system. Mystery Solved Our suspicions were confirmed with Karen after we ran an organic acid test. What we found was that despite eating a lot of sulfur-rich foods (like green drinks and veggies), her body was not converting that into sulfate which meant that her body was instead, creating ammonia. This led to her skin issues and likely released cortisol which could explain her heightened feelings of anxiety. It might sound crazy for a nutritionist to say, but the prescription was for her to decrease her green juices and other sulfur-rich foods. She also took regular Epsom salt baths to help with the detoxification process. Her body (and skin) responded within a week to these changes.  Now she’s careful about how much sulfites and high sulfur foods are in her diet. Eliminating Health Mysteries For Karen we were able to find that missing piece of the health puzzle and help her regain her healthy skin.
