First the British superstar had to overcome a blip right at the start as he fell to his knees on the beach before rising to play catchup. Yee and Wilde, who seemed to be joined by the hip after exiting the water side by side and spending the majority of the bike ride together, were inseparable throughout the first three laps of the run, before Yee eventually got the better of the Kiwi in a sprint to the line. Defending world champion Leo Bergere of France got back on a podium with third, as Les Bleus swept 3-4-5 with Pierre Le Corre and Dorian Coninx enjoying strong races. Swim – Dévay leads the way Over the course of a choppy sea swim off the coast of Sardinia, the men's race didn't follow the same script as the women's competition just hours earlier, with the majority of the field coming out of the water within touching distance. Over the first lap, Frenchman Dorian Coninx led the way, with the South African duo of Henri Schoeman and Jamie Riddle hot on his heels coming out for the Australian exit at halfway. Hungarian athlete Márk Dévay, a former World Aquathlon champion, was also up there, as was WTCS leader heading into today, Vasco Vilaca. By the end of the swim, things where more of the same at the front, with Dévay keeping things honest as he lead out of the water, with Riddle, Schoeman, Coninx, Vilaca and a number of others close by. Most importantly, Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde, two of the pre-race favourites, were just +0:15 down out of the water and in perfect position. Further back, Olympic champion Kristian Blummenfelt was just over half a minute behind at the back of the second group, with compatriot Gustav Iden ten seconds further back at +0:47 and Richard Murray of the Netherlands the last out of the water a minute down after Spaniard Mario Mola withdrew. Bike – Blummenfelt left stranded Out of transition, there was a mad scramble to make the front pack, as two dozen athletes, including Wilde, made it into the front pack, with the second group featuring the likes of Blummenfelt. The chase pack, sensing danger, worked hard over the first lap to close the gap, but was unable to, with the gap then quickly blowing out. After three laps, the gap was well over half a minute, with Wilde drilling the pace at the front of the lead group, as the chase group struggled to make back any time despite featuring the firepower of the likes of Blummenfelt and Swiss Simon Westermann, who on multiple occasions tried to drag the chasers along. By halfway, the gap was up to +0:50 with the front pack showing no signs of slowing, as Belgian Martin Van Riel, returning from a long period out with injury, returned to the front of a WTCS bike pack for the first time in close to a year. Off the bike, the gap back to Blummenfelt and the rest of the chase pack was +1:15, with the front pack, thanks to the hard work of the likes of Van Riel and Wilde, enjoying a comfortable buffer coming into transition. Lasse Lührs (GER) – 1:38:04 WTCS Cagliari 2022 results: Classy win for Georgia Taylor-Brown By Helen Gorman 8 Oct 2022 Georgia Taylor-Brown added another WTCS win in Cagliari on Saturday to extend her lead in the 2022 Series. Taylor Knibb had the extra factor on the bike, which dictated the outcome of the race in Sardinia, Italy. Taylor-Brown benefited from Knibb's hard work and then used her superior run strength to secure her third WTCS win of the season and extended her lead in the overall Series. Knibb was rewarded with bronze as Beth Potter and Cassandre Beaugrand found themselves on the wrong side of the beak and too far back to factor in the medal positions. Beaugrand ran, dived and swam away from the rest in the choppy sea before Maya Kingma and Vittoria Lopes took over, particularly on the second lap. Lopes was first to hit the timing mat after 1500m in 19:39 while Summer Rappaport, Beaugrand, Kingma and Sophie Coldwell and just about everybody else except Taylor Knibb, were bunched up with her. Potter and Taylor-Brown were 9th and 10th out, but there was really nothing separating them as they all burst into transition. Bike – All aboard the Knibb train The short transition was executed cleanly and quickly by everyone and a huge bunch left transition. The pace looked to be on from the start, but Knibb overcame a 30-second deficit from the swim and caught them by the third of 10 laps. She hit the front, blew the pack apart on the fourth lap and it was a rare moment that she wasn't on the front for the rest of the cycle leg. The British trio of Taylor-Brown, Coldwell and Waugh rode in the front group of 11 athletes, but Potter and Beaugrand were dropped. By the time the leaders hit T2, the group had put 1 min 44 seconds into the chase group, which contained Potter and Beaugrand. Advertisements Run – GTB takes control The group of 11 leaders were separated by no more than a second coming into transition, but it wasn't long before Taylor-Brown hit the front along with Knibb and Emma Lombardi. By the third of four laps, Taylor-Brown hit the front and stayed there to cross the line in front to claim another excellent victory in 2022. She said: “I just tried to run my own race and tried to stay in contact with that bike group. Taylor made it really hard but it worked in our favour because we got a really good gap. “I forgot how hard she rides, but it's good, she really gets the group going and we're all trying to hang on to her wheel. “I started speaking to the girls on the first two laps (of the run), ‘lets work together because this could be the podium.'” On extending her Series lead over Flora Duffy, who wasn't there today, she said: “It's all going to come down to Abu Dhabi now.” Lombardi was delighted to win silver, her first ever WTCS medal, she said: “I'm really enjoying racing against the best in the world, it's fantastic.” Beaugrand ran up to eighth place and moved in to third position overall in the Series. (Aug. 17, 2021) – IRONMAN today announced changes to the 2021 and 2022 editions of the IRONMAN® 70.3® World Championship based on the continued global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel and border restrictions are expected to prevent as many as half of the athlete field from being able to attend the 2021 Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission in St. George, Utah. As a result, the race will shift to a single-day event with both men and women racing on Saturday, September 18. Additionally, the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship that was set to be held in Taupō, New Zealand will also now be held in St. George, Utah, giving the travel-restricted athlete community an opportunity to race in the “Land of Endurance” with a two-day format from October 28-29, 2022. World Championships Ironman Kona will not take place this year, moves to February 2022 After it was revealed earlier today that Ironman is offering athletes the option to defer their Kona slots from this year to 2023, 2024 or 2025, there is now much more far-reaching news: it is rumored that the Ironman World Championship in Kona will not take place this year and has been pushed to February 2022. That rumor comes from a source known to the Triathlon Today editors who is in close contact with the Ironman organization. The news is expected to be officially announced very soon. “It is the government in Hawaii that has made this decision. Due to the high infection rate in Hawaii, it will be decided that the World Championships will not take place this year either. This will be confirmed by Ironman very soon.” What's New in the 303: Metzler, Knibb, Pallant-Browne Added to Collins Cup After Good Showings at IM Boulder 70.3 The Collins Cup is now set and IRONMAN Boulder 70.3 no doubt had an impact as Justin Metzler, Taylor Knibb and Emma Pallant-Browne were all chosen as Captains picks to join their respective teams. Metzler finished 5th in Boulder and Pallant-Browne and Knibb were first and second respectively helping them earn a spot. Also of note, added to the US team is Olympic silver medalist Katie Zaferes. World Championships Ironman Kona will not take place this year, moves to February 2022 After it was revealed earlier today that Ironman is offering athletes the option to defer their Kona slots from this year to 2023, 2024 or 2025, there is now much more far-reaching news: it is rumored that the Ironman World Championship in Kona will not take place this year and has been pushed to February 2022. That rumor comes from a source known to the Triathlon Today editors who is in close contact with the Ironman organization. The news is expected to be officially announced very soon. “It is the government in Hawaii that has made this decision. Due to the high infection rate in Hawaii, it will be decided that the World Championships will not take place this year either. This will be confirmed by Ironman very soon.” What's New in the 303: Metzler, Knibb, Pallant-Browne Added to Collins Cup After Good Showings at IM Boulder 70.3 The Collins Cup is now set and IRONMAN Boulder 70.3 no doubt had an impact as Justin Metzler, Taylor Knibb and Emma Pallant-Browne were all chosen as Captains picks to join their respective teams. Metzler finished 5th in Boulder and Pallant-Browne and Knibb were first and second respectively helping them earn a spot. Also of note, added to the US team is Olympic silver medalist Katie Zaferes. August 6th, Littleton: Sasha Underwood started her solo bike journey today and is planning to ride the Colorado Trail in ten days. That’s over 50 miles of single track, hike-a-bike, not easy riding every day. All of that while carrying everything she needs; clothes, food, tent, sleeping bag, tools, stove, hydration supplies, and a lot of mental toughness and grit! She did mail ahead some food to a couple of towns along the way but otherwise is self supported. Sasha has been working for weeks to figure it out. She has a detailed guide book that shows all possible water sources, detailed terrain profiles and shows her how to get around several wilderness areas that don’t allow cyclist. That is why it’s 550 miles, one detour adds about 70 miles near Kenosha Pass and there are a few others. Sasha has completed Ironman’s, guided visual impaired athletes and completed no shortage of amazing things. But the mental toughness required for this journey is unparalleled. Chatfield 70.3 Athlete Guide With all of my athlete's races being cancelled (the most recent being last week's IM Boulder 70.3), I decided to design our own makeup Boulder 70.3 (Highlands Ranch style). I've called it CHATFIELD 70.3 and designed a course that is contained within Chatfield. The Gravel Pond is 900 meters from one end to the other, and 1800 round trip. 1.2 miles is 1931, so 1800 is going to be pretty close. I rode from the Santa Fe side of Chatfield to Titan Rd - the new road that winds it's way though newly paved roundabouts. It's 10 miles from one end to the other. 2.75 laps is 56 miles of smooth road and traffic with a max speed of 35 and no real intersection other than the roundabouts The run course is inspired by the IRONMAN BOULDER RUN Flux Capacitor and Back to the Future and has 3 out and backs (or fingers) from the Transition Area. From T2 athletes head east on "the Queen K" of Chatfield (Chatfield State Park Rd} to the Model Air Field Rd at 3 miles and turnaround heading back toward the Transition Area. That part of the course is black pavement, exposed and goes out to an airport. On the second out/back, athletes will continue west and then north on the sidewalk path to the south edge of the Swim Beach Parking and turn around at 8.25 miles and return to the Aid Station at 10 miles. On the final out/back athletes head out of the transition area south on the dirt road adjacent to the Gravel Pond on go to 11.5 miles and turnaround back to the Finish Line at 13.1 miles.. Tim O’Donnell finished 2nd in Kona at the Ironman World Championships, breaking 8 hours to finish in 7.59.40.One of the most consistent performers on the Big Island, Tim has finished in the top ten six times in the last eight years. This year’s result was all the more sweet for him after a difficult year marred by injury - broken ribs following a horrific high speed bike crash kept him away from racing the early season. Once they come back, time seems to accelerate. I get up to the hot corner to take pictures of the pros coming riding into T2 and then running up Palani and down the Kuikini Hwy. The female pros roll in within 20-30 minutes of the first males. Shortly after the first females head into T2 the lead males are coming back from Ali'I Dr and out onto the Queen K. By the time the female pros are down Ali'I, the men are heading into the energy lab. By the time the women are coming back from Ali'I, the men are coming out of the energy lab. I wanted to interview Heather Jackson and did not catch her there, but I did get off a question at the pro conference. What we are going to do now is take you to a series of 3 finish line interviews and then go right into the men's pro conference and the women's conference. When we come back, we'll talk about the rest of the evening. The rest of the afternoon was spent tracking our Colorado age-group athletes and celebrating with them at the finish line and getting there pictures. We did the final post of the evening around 1am. The next day we split up. I went to scout out University of Hawaii Hilo for my daughter while Bill and Khem went to the Coeur Sports brunch and then worked processing pictures and what not until we left for dinner and the airport. Our return home was eventful. On Sunday evening we had a mechanical issue at the end of the runway and had to go back to the gate. By 10, they kicked everyone off the plane and announced that they were going to get the part we need from Oahu. The part arrived around 1am, but did not work. At 2:30 they cancelled the flight and then we got in a line to get reticketed and pick up our vouchers and luggage. We got a rental car and drove to the Fairmount, which turned out to be awesome. Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei Breaks Marathon World Record - A record that seemed untouchable for years fell in 2:14:04. The run whacked 81 seconds off the previous women’s mark. “I kept saying, ‘Tomorrow is my day,’” she said. “I wanted to be the second Kipchoge — the Kipchoge for women. I focused on that.” Kosgei even made a last-minute decision to switch her shoes to match the ones Kipchoge ran in, the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly NEXT%. She had planned on wearing an earlier version of the Nike Vaporfly shoe. Kosgei, who also won in Chicago last year, ran 2:14:04 on Sunday. Radcliffe ran 2:15:25 at the 2003 London Marathon, and the record had long seemed untouchable. For years, she was the only woman to have run a marathon in under 2 hours 17 minutes. The IRONMAN World Championship is really the cherry on top for me this year and I am considering it more of a "victory lap". I qualified for Kona at IM Boulder this year and then the following week proceeded to start the Leadman race series (5 trail events over 3 months ending with the 100 mile run in Leadville, Colorado back in August). Been a long and busy year so I am excited to just be there in Kona with family and friends supporting. What is your favorite career IRONMAN memory so far Drinking beers on State Street with family/friends the night before qualifying at Wisconsin back in 2013. That and running down Ali'I Drive. So much emotion and feelings in those last couple hundred yards. Is this your first time competing in Kona and if no how many other times have you done so? No. This will be my 2nd time back in Kona, hoping for some redemption this time around. If someone were watching that is new to the sport, what would you tell them is the coolest thing about being a triathlete and competing in this venue. I think there is something to be said about sharing this course (and the day) with the world's best athletes. Coolest thing about this venue...everything you see on TV, the magic and mystique of the island is so true. What do you think is the hardest thing about doing an IRONMAN? Like training for any endurance sport/event, knowing when to hold back to stave off injury and/or burnout. The hardest thing about actually executing the IRONMAN race is pulling everything together (pacing, nutrition, race strategy, etc.). For me, It's HOW you manage those variables and unknowns that are thrown at you on race day that separate you from having a great race to an okay race. Niki Leo What are you most excited about in competing in Kona? I am most excited to experience the legend course, to personally feel the heat, humidity, and winds that are so infamous. I am also excited to see in person, at one time, many of my heroes in the sport. Triathlon is genuinely one of the only sports in the world where you get to compete on the same field of play as the professionals...and do that with all of them is going to be amazing. I am truly excited about just being able to have this opportunity. What is your favorite career Ironman so far? That is a hard one...Louisville 2018 where I qualified will probably always be special because I realized a dream come true. However, my first Ironman--Arizona in 2011--will probably always be my favorite because my love for the sport was all so pure then-- a lesson in ignorance is bliss. The celebratory feeling that I could actually do something like a full Ironman...there is always that doubt...and then you cross that finish line and you cannot believe it...the feeling is so indescribable unless you've done it. It is also the only time I ever felt that way...after finishing the first, knowing you could do it, the others after that were amazing but I knew I could finish because I had before. Is this your first time competing in Kona? Yes. I have always wanted to qualify and came close a couple of times however, in 2018 after my first DNF (ever) in Ironman Boulder--which was supposed to be my 11th IM--I did IM Canada (which turned out to be #11). Destroyed about the DNF at Boulder, I registered for Louisville (12) to get onto the Legacy list. Well...I finished second (missing first by 6 seconds) and qualified! If someone were new to the sport, what would I tell them is the best thing about being a triathlete and competing at this venue? For sure, triathlon has saved me in so many ways...it has given me something to live for and something to always work towards. It has given me the feeling few will ever experience in their lifetime--that feeling of wanting so badly to stop and yet, feeling the most alive I ever feel. It has given me direction when I have been lost--depression, eating disorders, cancer. It has given me determination and grit to endure--pain, injuries (which all have come as result of getting hit by cars...multiple times). It has given me a family and friends that I would not otherwise have in CO since I moved here not knowing anyone. It has given me perspective that I'm human--changing and adapting everyday is required to lead a balanced life. The venue itself will cause you to doubt yourself, to face failure, to determine what your priorities in life are, and it will make you feel more alive than anything else in this world if you dare take yourself there. What do I think is the hardest part of Ironman? The time it takes. The energy it takes at times. The fear you have to overcome to test yourself. And to do it for YOU. That first one is always about YOU...then you "drink the kool aid" and for some reason, it changes. I have a love/hate relationship with Ironman because of this. I think the family and culture it creates can be amazing but I have also seen it destroy people. It can be so intimidating so I think the hardest thing is not to lose yourself and don't lose sight of what Ironman is in your life...that is, it is a hobby/sport you enjoy and unless you are a pro, it does not define you. As a professional, he has earned 50+ podium finishes including over 22 wins at major events throughout the world. Among the wins are nine Ironman 70.3 victories, three 140.6 wins, and six Armed Forces National Championships. At the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, Timothy finished 4th in 2018, 6th in 2016, 3rd in 2015, and 5th in 2013, finishing as top American in 2013 & 2015. O’Donnell’s sporting career began when he joined his first swim team at the age of five in Roseville, CA. He began to shine in the pool during his high school years while attending Wyoming Seminary Prep (SEM) in Kingston, Pennsylvania. At SEM O’Donnell was captain of the varsity swim team, set multiple school records and earned repeated district championships and all-state honors. O’Donnell then attended the United States Naval Academy (BS Naval Architecture, 2003) where he swam on the Varsity team for two seasons before fully committing to the sport of triathlon. Today I am interviewing Rian Smoak. Rian is a Triathlete and has competed in multiple marathons and triathlons, including the Ironman Championships in Hawaii, which is the Mecca of all Ironmans. After Rian crossed the finish line in Kona he knew he needed to provide an opportunity for someone else to have that feeling, who maybe couldn’t finish on their own. This started the partnership with his teammate Bryce. Bryce has Cerebral Palsey and is in a wheelchair. CP makes him unable to walk or use his legs. Through an incredible friendship they are taking the triathlon world by storm. Rian is giving Bryce the opportunity to cross finish lines. Rian and Bryce have competed in multiple races together. This consists of Rian pulling Bryce in a boat on the swim portion, pulling Bryce behind his bike, and pushing him in a race stroller on the run. This Saturday they will be tackling a FULL Ironman at IM BOULDER. You will be so inspired to hear Rian talk about why he knew he had to use his passion for racing to help someone else, how he changed his attitude when it comes to competition. Two week's later she backed it up with another win at IM Boulder on June 10th with a 9:16:12. Six weeks later she races Challenge Prague half iron distance with a 4:22:03 to finish 2nd. Not only is she fast and tough, she's smart as a whip. Kirsty graduated summa cum laude from Villanova University in 2005 with a BSc in Mathematics and Statistics. During her time at Villanova she was a 4 time NCAA All-Academic recipient, 4 time Big East Top Scholar, 2 time XC All-Mid Atlantic, and captain of the women’s cross country team in 2004. The 4-decade battle for the world’s most iconic endurance race Per The New York Times, the Ironman Triathlon puts on more than 260 races in 44 countries and is valued at nearly a billion dollars, making it one of the world’s most premiere sports brands. Now, over 40 years later, the people at the forefront of its creation haven’t seen a dime, and the legal triathlon continues. It all started in Hawaii... Long before the Spartan or Tough Mudder, naval officer John Collins and his wife, Judy, thought to combine 3 of the toughest endurance races: On Feb. 18, 1978, the first “Hawaiian Iron Man Triathlon” was born. There were 15 participants. John wrote a 3-page rule book with 10 major rules that boiled down to: “Swim 2.4 miles! Run 26 ¼ miles! Bike 112 miles! Brag the rest of your life!” But, it was rule number 8 -- which set the entry fee at $5 and stipulated that the event would be sponsored by participants -- that would later cause the biggest headache. Gettin’ Silky with it By ’79, Collins needed someone to run the 3rd edition of the event, so he handed over a box of paperwork to husband and wife fitness club owners Hank Grundman and Valerie Silk -- no lawyers, no signatures. By ’82 the race had ballooned in popularity, and John Dunbar (the runner-up in the original 2 races) started selling copies of the original trophy. He, like the other 14 OG racers, presumed a stake of the competition still belonged to him... So, when Silk registered the Ironman trademark in ’83 and told Dunbar to cease sale of the throwback trophy he was pedaling, he didn’t go quietly. The real triathlon... Silk sold the brand for $3m in ’89 and, in 2015, after years of expansion, the brand was acquired by its current owner, a Chinese conglomerate called Dalian Wanda Group, for $650m. 4 decades later, Dunbar continues to argue that the famed triathlon belongs to him and the original 15, even though the courts, and many of Dunbar’s allies, have insisted it’s too late. Silk said no original competitors showed interest in Ironman until it made money.
