There has been a fundamental shift in understanding metabolic health and chronic disease, particularly Type 2 diabetes, challenging long-standing dietary dogma by emphasizing that insulin resistance is largely driven by overconsumption of refined carbohydrates, not dietary fat or red meat. While highlighting the success of carbohydrate restriction and ketogenic approaches, nutrition is being seen as a powerful tool for reversing diabetes—often more effective and sustainable than conventional medication. The implications are far-reaching, not only for individual health outcomes, but also for reshaping public health strategies in addressing today's chronic disease epidemic. In this episode, I speak with Gary Taubes, Sami Inkinen, and Dr. Greeshma Shetty about an approach to treating Type 2 Diabetes that works. I also discuss how red meat is not to blame, but we should be looking at high sugar and starch diets. Gary Taubes is an award-winning science and health journalist, and co-founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI). He is the author of The Case Against Sugar, Why We Get Fat, Good Calories, Bad Calories, and, most recently, The Case for Keto. Gary is a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for Science. He has written three cover articles on nutrition and health for The New York Times Magazine, and his writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, Esquire, and numerous "best of" anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers, and is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research. He lives in Oakland, CA. Sami Inkinen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Virta Health, a pioneer in reversing diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes through a nutrition-first approach. Sami's personal connection to diabetes and passion to advance global health was the motivation behind Virta and its innovative care model. Previously, Inkinen was the co-founder of the leading online real estate marketplace Trulia, serving as its COO and president and board member until its IPO and eventual sale to Zillow Group. Dr. Greeshma Shetty, board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, currently serves as a Lead Clinician in the Virta Medical Group and the Director of Quality and Safety at Virta Health. Prior to joining Virta, she was clinical physician educator at Harvard Medical School, where she directed the combined Joslin - Beth Israel Deaconess Endocrine Fellowship program and Co-Directed the Asian American Diabetes Initiative. She is dedicated to clinical excellence, leveraging health technology, transforming healthcare delivery, driving health equity and building high performing teams. Spencer speaks with Sami Inkinen, the CEO and Founder of Virta Health. After winning the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in 2011, the triathlete found out that he was pre-diabetic that same year. Unsatisfied with the conventional wisdom of “exercise more and eat less,” Sami dug into the science of type 2 diabetes, by consulting experts on the science of carbohydrate restriction and metabolic health. Seeking to raise awareness about the dangers of sugar, Inkinen and his wife rowed across the Pacific Ocean for 45 days—completely unsupported—from California to Hawaii for 2,750 miles. While on that journey, the idea for Virta was born. His personal mantra on that trip was "Use Sisu, not Sugar"—with the Finnish concept of Stoicism, tenacity, and grit, as determination to help himself and others reverse their diagnoses.  Virta is an app-based, health technology start-up that offers treatment to reverse type 2 diabetes without surgery, allowing patients to work with medical providers and health coaches on a nearly real-time basis. Virta's approach helps patients get off of all diabetes-specific medications while achieving sub-diabetic HbA1c (blood sugar)—in 60% of patients who complete one-year of the Virta Treatment. Of those patients prescribed insulin, 94% reduce or fully-eliminate usage.  Previously, Inkinen was the co-founder of real estate marketplace Trulia, serving as its COO and president and board member until its IPO and sale to Zillow Group. Sami is also an active angel investor in healthcare. Inkinen started his career as a radiochemist at a nuclear power plant. He holds a Master of Science in engineering physics from the Helsinki University of Technology, and a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University.

In this episode, we meet Sami Inkinen, Co-Founder and CEO of Virta Health. Virta is an online specialty medical clinic that helps people reverse type 2 diabetes & other chronic conditions safely and sustainably, without the risks, costs, or side effects of medications or surgery. Virta's innovations in nutritional biochemistry, data science and digital tools combined with their clinical expertise are shifting the diabetes treatment paradigm from management to reversal. Virta has experienced a growth rate of nearly 200% year over year, and now works with over 100 of the largest health plans, employers, and government organizations and treats patients in all 50 states. Virta recently announced a $133M Series E round, led by Tiger Global. The Series E financing follows a recent $65 million raise in December of 2020, nearly doubling the company's valuation in just 5 months to $2 billion. Previously, Sami was the co-founder of the leading online real estate marketplace Trulia, serving as its COO and president and board member until its IPO and eventual sale to Zillow Group. He also worked on Microsoft's strategy team for MS Office, and as a consultant for McKinsey & Company within the software, telecommunications, and government sectors. As a venture partner at Obvious Ventures, Inkinen also invests in and advises healthcare IT companies. Sami holds a Master of Science in engineering physics from the Helsinki University of Technology and a MBA from Stanford University. In this episode, Sami and I chat about: How Sami's personal connection to diabetes and passion to advance health on a global scale led to the founding of Virta Health Why there has been no improvement in population-level outcomes for diabetes patients despite trillions of dollars spent over the past decade Virta's approach to reversing type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases, leading to gross savings of $5,000/patient per year and sustained improvements in patient outcomes The required shift in telemedicine from episodic care to continuous care in order to achieve outcomes that were previously not possible Sami's learnings from his journey as a serial entrepreneur and advice to others hoping to make an impact in the healthcare industry

Minkälaista on aikalaisuus vuonna 2021? Growing up on a farm in Finland, Sami was always intrigued by health, wellness, and athletic performance. He did ride his bike or cross-country ski to-and-from school most days, after all! He moved to the United States in 2003 to attend Stanford Business School, and it's there where he met his friend and business partner, Pete Flint, and, together, they founded Trulia, eventually turning it public. Today, he is the CEO and Founder of Virta Health, a company on a mission to reverse Type 2 Diabetes in 100 million people by 2025. It was a revelation about his own health that was the catalyst for this new mission. You see, even though Sami was and still is a top performer both in sport and life, he made the mistake that so many of us make: burning the candle at both ends. “In 2008,” he says, “I had a view that the more hours you train, the faster you become, and the more hours you work, the more effective you are.” That way of life led to frequent bouts of flu and fever. Even worse, he recalls, he was forgetting common words and names. He didn’t realize at the time, but he was also on his way to becoming pre-diabetic. This way of life is a slippery slope for a high-performing athlete and CEO, which is why Purple Patch Fitness and the Matt Dixon “Pillars of Performance” were such a good fit for Inkinen. He put these philosophies into practice during his triathlon training and the results have been astonishing. Here are just a few of Sami’s achievements: Overall amateur champion at Wildflower Triathlon Long Course, Alcatraz and Hawaii 70.3 Age group world champion at the IRONMAN 70.3. distance Two sub-9 hour races at the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona Personal Best of 8:24 IRONMAN finish time Surely an athlete with these results must train upwards of 20-25 hours per week! Not in this case. Sami did this all on a recipe of 10-12 hours per week. How is this possible? Well, discipline and trust are two ingredients in this equation. Matt and Sami dive deep into training philosophies and they discuss what’s important to success and life, work, and sport including: Challenges while juggling work, life, and training The value of having a coach The key elements of setting up successful training on limited hours Tips for managing life and schedules each week Mistakes of aspirational and ambitious athletes Importance of adopting a “growth” mindset instead of “results” mindset His favorite free recovery tool Rapid-fire questions on success Ultimately, the goal of Sam’s success is one that we should all share: Creating Sustainable High Performance in all aspects of life. We hope you enjoy this high-performance episode.

This week we welcome back to the show Donal O'Neill. The man behind the movies Cereal Killers & CK2 - Run On Fat, is here to discuss his new movie: The Big Fat Fix. “The Big Fat Fix” is an independent co-production between Donal and cardiologist Aseem Malhotra. In the movie, they travel to Pioppi in southern Italy where the residents enjoy longevity and a healthy old-age with low rates of heart disease, diabetes and dementia. With their discoveries in Pioppi, they offer practical solutions to preventing and reversing diet-related disease. Having financed the movie with a successful crowdfunding campaign backed by Jamie Oliver and supportive articles in the New York Times and Men’s Health, the content of the movie is 100% free from any commercial influence. Questions we ask in this episode: You premiered in British Parliament - how did that happen and what was the reaction? Beyond travelling to Italy, how much science is behind the findings and recommendations within the movie? Great to see the ‘move daily’ message in there. What have been your discoveries when it comes to exercise lifestyle and health? After everything you’ve learned, what are you views on carbohydrate consumption? What are your stress reduction strategies? Full Transcript & Video:  http://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/donal-oneill-the-big-fat-fix/ Hi, this is Guy Lawrence of 180 nutrition and welcome to this week's episode of health sessions where of course we have cut through the confusion by connecting with leading global health and wellness experts around the globe to share the latest science and thinking and empowering everyone including ourselves to turn our health and lives around. This week we are doing it with the awesome Donal O'Neil. If you are not familiar with Donal, we've had him on the podcast before and he's the man behind the documentaries 'Cereal Killers' and 'Cereal Killers To Run Off Fat.' [00:01:00] We've got him back on the show today to discuss his new documentary, 'The Big Fat Fix.' I watched it the other day and it is awesome and I encourage everyone that listens to this show to go and check it out. Just rent it, download it, stream it, whatever, share it with your family because it is an awesome message. In this movie, he basically teams up with cardiologist Hassim [U-th-ra 00:00:54] from the UK and he takes him on a journey to a small forgotten village in Italy where the true secrets of the Mediterranean diet can be found. The message I love from this movie, it's not only food, it's medicine, but lifestyle is medicine too. I thought they nailed the message really really well. Of course, then they show you how we can apply that message into our busy lives of today. We dive into it. You are going to love it. It was great to have Donal back on the show as well. If you do enjoy this episode, we've got a couple of other interviews that are very related because we've had Donal on before and other people from the cereal killers movie. Just remember Sammy [Inki-nen 00:01:36] and also [Me-ri-de-th 00:01:38] Lauren and Dr. Peter [Brook-na-sa 00:01:40]. They were all related to the other movie, so if you want to delve into this more and this message, just go and check those episodes back, but we will link on the show notes as well over at 180nutrition.com.au. [00:02:00] Of course, don't forget guys, we are now distributing in New Zealand, so our products are available in New Zealand and the USA and I think Dubai is not far behind as we speak as well. Who's Donal O'Neil in a snapshot? Donal [00:04:00] In a nutshell. I'm a former athlete who got very badly injured and got to the age of 30 and couldn't run any more. That's probably the first thing I would say about myself. About 6 years ago, my father had an unexpected heart attack. He too was an elite athlete and I wondered why the hell that happened. That curiosity led me to completely changing careers. I was in the tech industry prior to that and online marketing and I decided I want to tell a few stories about health and wellness and human performance and I flew to South Africa and fortunately bumped into one professor Timothy [Nokes 00:04:27] who just happens to be the greatest sports scientist on the planet. [00:05:00] He was very generous with his time and his resources and we made a movie together called 'Cereal Killers.' That was back in 2013. Off the back of that, we followed up with phenomenal [inaudible 00:04:44] champion who contacted me off the back of 'Cereal Killers' to say that he too eats a low carbohydrate, high fat diet and was winning world [armor 00:04:53] title. We were on a bit of a role there and 'The Big Fat Fixer,' our third movie with the brilliant young British Cardiologist Hassim [Ma-la-ha-dra 00:05:02] takes a full circle into my 6 year investigation into health and lifestyle and longevity and human performance. In a nutshell, that's ... That's actually not a nutshell, that's quite a lengthy nutshell. Full Transcript & Video:  http://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/donal-oneill-the-big-fat-fix/

Entrepreneur and athlete Sami Inkinen, along with his wife, rowed 2,750 miles over 45 days without using any of the traditional “athlete foods” conventional knowledge says are essential: sugars and carbs. They didn’t starve, far from it. They came out of it healthier than can be expected from such an endeavor. Why? As fit as Inkinen is, he developed prediabetes by following the standard diet and surmised that sugar was the culprit. If someone like Inkinen is vulnerable, we should all be aware. Inkinen recounts his amazing journey from California to Hawaii.Lessons:    1.    The key to success is anything is a growth mindset: Don’t go through an experience, grow through it.    2.    Sometimes you have to face a challenge as if you were eating an elephant, one piece at a time, slowly, as best you can.    3.    The only way to escape an unpleasant experience is to embrace it fully, not fight it.
