Sami Inkinen, CEO of Virta Health, joins the podcast to share how his organization is leveraging nutrition to reverse chronic diseases and reduce dependence on costly medications. He discusses the growing popularity of GLP-1s, weighs in on their long-term sustainability, and explains why nutrition should remain the cornerstone of obesity treatment. Inkinen also emphasizes the need for greater innovation in healthcare and outlines how AI can be used smartly to scale personalized care delivery.
There has been a fundamental shift in understanding metabolic health and chronic disease, particularly Type 2 diabetes, challenging long-standing dietary dogma by emphasizing that insulin resistance is largely driven by overconsumption of refined carbohydrates, not dietary fat or red meat. While highlighting the success of carbohydrate restriction and ketogenic approaches, nutrition is being seen as a powerful tool for reversing diabetes—often more effective and sustainable than conventional medication. The implications are far-reaching, not only for individual health outcomes, but also for reshaping public health strategies in addressing today's chronic disease epidemic. In this episode, I speak with Gary Taubes, Sami Inkinen, and Dr. Greeshma Shetty about an approach to treating Type 2 Diabetes that works. I also discuss how red meat is not to blame, but we should be looking at high sugar and starch diets. Gary Taubes is an award-winning science and health journalist, and co-founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative (NuSI). He is the author of The Case Against Sugar, Why We Get Fat, Good Calories, Bad Calories, and, most recently, The Case for Keto. Gary is a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for Science. He has written three cover articles on nutrition and health for The New York Times Magazine, and his writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, Esquire, and numerous "best of" anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers, and is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research. He lives in Oakland, CA. Sami Inkinen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Virta Health, a pioneer in reversing diseases like obesity and type 2 diabetes through a nutrition-first approach. Sami's personal connection to diabetes and passion to advance global health was the motivation behind Virta and its innovative care model. Previously, Inkinen was the co-founder of the leading online real estate marketplace Trulia, serving as its COO and president and board member until its IPO and eventual sale to Zillow Group. Dr. Greeshma Shetty, board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, currently serves as a Lead Clinician in the Virta Medical Group and the Director of Quality and Safety at Virta Health. Prior to joining Virta, she was clinical physician educator at Harvard Medical School, where she directed the combined Joslin - Beth Israel Deaconess Endocrine Fellowship program and Co-Directed the Asian American Diabetes Initiative. In this Episode I welcome on Sami Inkinen CEO of Virta Health to discuss Virta Health's approach to Type 2 Diabetes reversal' Virta Health utilizes a continuous remote care intervention (CCI) that incorporates individualized carbohydrate restriction, health coaching, and telemedicine to manage and reverse Type 2 Diabetes We cover topics such as: Impact of individualized carbohydrate restriction: The role of the patient-provider relationship: Addressing quality of food The Virta change model: GLP-1 Receptor agonists as a bridge: Sustainable solutions require addressing nutrition: Research Findings of Virta's approach. Long-Term Effects of CCI: A 2-year non-randomized clinical trial published in Frontiers in Endocrinology showed significant and sustained improvements in multiple clinical markers of diabetes and cardiometabolic health in the CCI group compared to the UC (usual care) group . These included reductions in HbA1c, fasting glucose and insulin, weight, blood pressure, triglycerides, and liver alanine transaminase . The CCI group also saw higher rates of diabetes reversal and remission . GLP-1 Deprescription: A recent study published in Diabetes Therapy explored the impact of discontinuing GLP-1 agonists in patients who had successfully integrated Carb-Restriction Nutrient Therapy (CRNT) supported by Virta's telemedicine model . The study found that patients did not experience weight regain after stopping GLP-1 medications, and while HbA1c levels increased slightly, they generally remained below the diagnostic threshold for diabetes About Sami: Join NowSami InkinenFounder, Chief Executive Officer Sami Inkinen is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Virta Health, the leader in diabetes reversal and sustainable weight loss. CRAZY long endurance IS POSSIBLE with a minimal amount of carbs
Spencer speaks with Sami Inkinen, the CEO and Founder of Virta Health. After winning the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in 2011, the triathlete found out that he was pre-diabetic that same year. Unsatisfied with the conventional wisdom of “exercise more and eat less,” Sami dug into the science of type 2 diabetes, by consulting experts on the science of carbohydrate restriction and metabolic health. Seeking to raise awareness about the dangers of sugar, Inkinen and his wife rowed across the Pacific Ocean for 45 days—completely unsupported—from California to Hawaii for 2,750 miles. While on that journey, the idea for Virta was born. His personal mantra on that trip was "Use Sisu, not Sugar"—with the Finnish concept of Stoicism, tenacity, and grit, as determination to help himself and others reverse their diagnoses. Virta is an app-based, health technology start-up that offers treatment to reverse type 2 diabetes without surgery, allowing patients to work with medical providers and health coaches on a nearly real-time basis. Virta's approach helps patients get off of all diabetes-specific medications while achieving sub-diabetic HbA1c (blood sugar)—in 60% of patients who complete one-year of the Virta Treatment. Of those patients prescribed insulin, 94% reduce or fully-eliminate usage. Previously, Inkinen was the co-founder of real estate marketplace Trulia, serving as its COO and president and board member until its IPO and sale to Zillow Group. Sami is also an active angel investor in healthcare. Inkinen started his career as a radiochemist at a nuclear power plant. He holds a Master of Science in engineering physics from the Helsinki University of Technology, and a Master of Business Administration from Stanford University.
Starting a company is hard, even in the best of times. But during a period of economic uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, political divisions, and a global pandemic -- it can feel impossible. In this episode, I talk to Sami Inkinen, a founder who has run companies in both bull and bear markets. Sami was the co-founder of Trulia (IPO) and now Virta Health (valued at $2B). Sami Inkinen, the co-founder and CEO of Virta Health, wants to reverse type 2 diabetes in 100 million people. By using a keto diet and disrupting the way we deliver healthcare, he may just succeed with that amazing goal.
Recorded on 02/22/22 In this episode, we discuss the future of chronic care management and the ability to leverage technology to aid in reversing disease, particularly type 2 diabetes (T2D). To discuss the topic, Charles Rhyee is joined by Sami Inkinen, Co-Founder and CEO of Virta Health, an innovative digital health company that helps members safely and sustainably reverses T2D by addressing root causes of the disease. We discuss the diabetes crisis in America and how the current ways we treat T2D isn't working, evidenced by the ever-increasing number of Americans diagnosed with diabetes and the associated costs to treat them. We explore how the conversation around T2D has started to shift away from slowing disease progression to trying to reverse the disease. And finally, the implications reversing T2D could have on how we look at chronic condition management going forward. For Disclosures, click here bit.ly/3cPHkNW

The numbers surrounding type 2 diabetes are staggering. The WHO puts the number north of 400 million people globally, and it's just getting worse. Health experts agree that type 2 diabetes can largely be managed by a combination of nutrition, exercise, and medication. But what if it could be reversed completely? That's the claim, and the health moonshot, of our guest today, Sami Inkinen, CEO and Founder of Virta, which StartUp Health backed in 2020. Specifically, Inkinen and his team want to reverse type 2 diabetes in 100 million people by 2025. Before Virta, Inkinen disrupted the real estate industry by co-founding Trulia, which he sold to Zillow for $2.5B. Now with Virta, he's raised more than $350M to date, giving him the capital needed to take a great idea and scale it in unprecedented ways. --- Entrepreneurs: How to get investment from StartUp Health startuphealth.com Investors: How to invest in StartUp Health Moonshots healthmoonshots.com Want more content like this? In this episode, we meet Sami Inkinen, Co-Founder and CEO of Virta Health. Virta is an online specialty medical clinic that helps people reverse type 2 diabetes & other chronic conditions safely and sustainably, without the risks, costs, or side effects of medications or surgery. Virta's innovations in nutritional biochemistry, data science and digital tools combined with their clinical expertise are shifting the diabetes treatment paradigm from management to reversal. Virta has experienced a growth rate of nearly 200% year over year, and now works with over 100 of the largest health plans, employers, and government organizations and treats patients in all 50 states. Virta recently announced a $133M Series E round, led by Tiger Global. The Series E financing follows a recent $65 million raise in December of 2020, nearly doubling the company's valuation in just 5 months to $2 billion. Previously, Sami was the co-founder of the leading online real estate marketplace Trulia, serving as its COO and president and board member until its IPO and eventual sale to Zillow Group. He also worked on Microsoft's strategy team for MS Office, and as a consultant for McKinsey & Company within the software, telecommunications, and government sectors. As a venture partner at Obvious Ventures, Inkinen also invests in and advises healthcare IT companies. Sami holds a Master of Science in engineering physics from the Helsinki University of Technology and a MBA from Stanford University. In this episode, Sami and I chat about: How Sami's personal connection to diabetes and passion to advance health on a global scale led to the founding of Virta Health Why there has been no improvement in population-level outcomes for diabetes patients despite trillions of dollars spent over the past decade Virta's approach to reversing type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases, leading to gross savings of $5,000/patient per year and sustained improvements in patient outcomes The required shift in telemedicine from episodic care to continuous care in order to achieve outcomes that were previously not possible Sami's learnings from his journey as a serial entrepreneur and advice to others hoping to make an impact in the healthcare industry
Growing up on a farm in Finland, Sami was always intrigued by health, wellness, and athletic performance. He did ride his bike or cross-country ski to-and-from school most days, after all! He moved to the United States in 2003 to attend Stanford Business School, and it's there where he met his friend and business partner, Pete Flint, and, together, they founded Trulia, eventually turning it public. Today, he is the CEO and Founder of Virta Health, a company on a mission to reverse Type 2 Diabetes in 100 million people by 2025. It was a revelation about his own health that was the catalyst for this new mission. You see, even though Sami was and still is a top performer both in sport and life, he made the mistake that so many of us make: burning the candle at both ends. “In 2008,” he says, “I had a view that the more hours you train, the faster you become, and the more hours you work, the more effective you are.” That way of life led to frequent bouts of flu and fever. Even worse, he recalls, he was forgetting common words and names. He didn’t realize at the time, but he was also on his way to becoming pre-diabetic. This way of life is a slippery slope for a high-performing athlete and CEO, which is why Purple Patch Fitness and the Matt Dixon “Pillars of Performance” were such a good fit for Inkinen. He put these philosophies into practice during his triathlon training and the results have been astonishing. Here are just a few of Sami’s achievements: Overall amateur champion at Wildflower Triathlon Long Course, Alcatraz and Hawaii 70.3 Age group world champion at the IRONMAN 70.3. distance Two sub-9 hour races at the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona Personal Best of 8:24 IRONMAN finish time Surely an athlete with these results must train upwards of 20-25 hours per week! Not in this case. Sami did this all on a recipe of 10-12 hours per week. How is this possible? Well, discipline and trust are two ingredients in this equation. Matt and Sami dive deep into training philosophies and they discuss what’s important to success and life, work, and sport including: Challenges while juggling work, life, and training The value of having a coach The key elements of setting up successful training on limited hours Tips for managing life and schedules each week Mistakes of aspirational and ambitious athletes Importance of adopting a “growth” mindset instead of “results” mindset His favorite free recovery tool Rapid-fire questions on success Ultimately, the goal of Sam’s success is one that we should all share: Creating Sustainable High Performance in all aspects of life. We hope you enjoy this high-performance episode.
In this episode, Trevor and Steve sit down with Sami Inkinen, founder of Virta and Trulia.

Dear Friends & Colleagues,On Friday March 27th 2020, I launched a limited podcast series addressing how the COVID-19 pandemic is reframing American healthcare. You can find the introductory episode here. In this series, I’ve been interviewing visionary, courageous healthcare leaders and entrepreneurs - asking two questions: (1) How is the COVID-19 pandemic immediately changing the way you are delivering healthcare? (2) How will COVID-19 reframe American healthcare for years to come? In this interview we’ll be speaking with Sami Inkinen, the founder and CEO of Virta Health. Virta is a completely virtual diabetes clinic whose brand promise is to not only improve type 2 diabetes but, in many instances, to reverse it. Virta has completely reframed type 2 diabetes care with the physiologic approach they take; the data-driven, digital, AI-enabled technologies they deploy; and the personalized, empathetic and highly responsive care they provide. Sami is a remarkable person and entrepreneur. He’s a physicist, turned business and tech guy, turned online real estate entrepreneur, turned healthcare reframer/entrepreneur. I met Sami about 6 years ago and have had the great privilege of working with him and getting to know him. And, in full transparency, I have served as an advisor to Virta. Some of the topics we’ll touch upon include:Virta's approach to type 2 diabetes - which allowed it to be far better prepared to continue delivering exceptional clinical care and outstanding consumer experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the most remarkable statistics I’ve heard during this pandemic - having to do with risk of mortality from the SARS-COV-2 infection in individuals with uncontrolled diabetes. Some of the crippling flaws in the American healthcare system that were exposed and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.A fundamental misalignment in our healthcare system that represents the most serious impediment to delivering empathetic, value-based care, and superior outcomes.Sami’s top recommendations for what we need to do to create a better healthcare system coming out of this COVID-19 pandemic.Virta Health is an example of what reframed ‘great’ looks like in chronic disease management. We could spend quite a bit of time breaking down the principles, approaches, processes, technologies, behavioral and relational aspects, payment model, culture, and so on that make Virta so successful. But the bottom line is that the value proposition, experience and outcomes are far superior to the standard of care across the country. Virta represents, similarly to others we’ve interviewed in this series, a path to what markedly better healthcare can and should look like. Sami and his colleagues have paved a path to the future by reframing the care of people with diabetes. One major take-away I’d like to leave you with is one of the key lessons I’ve learned in this limited series. Organizations - like Virta - that have reframed healthcare, have fared far better during this pandemic than organizations that have not. This has been a common theme that has come up repeatedly during these in-depth interviews. It speaks to the fact that our current legacy approaches to healthcare delivery are vulnerable, fragile and simply not oriented, designed or organized around our healthcare needs. Reframed organizations appear to be much more adaptable, resilient, anti-fragile - and consumer-oriented. This observation was not lost on me and should not be lost on you.Until next time, be safe and be well.Zeev Neuwirth, MD
Sami Inkinen trained as a physicist and started his career in a nuclear power plant. Despite being a world-class triathlete, Sami learned he was becoming pre-diabetic, setting him on a journey that led him to found Virta Health, a technology-enabled virtual clinic that can treat diabetes without medication.

In this episode of Creating a New Healthcare, Dr. Zeev Neuwirth interviews Sami Inkinen, founder & CEO of Virta Health. Sami’s story is remarkable, and remarkably disruptive to healthcare. There are actually 3 stories rolled up into this podcast: (1) the story of Sami Inkinen, (2) the story of the ketogenic nutritional approach (low carb/high fat diet), and (3) most importantly, from our perspective, the story of how disrupt-able healthcare delivery is when you combine cutting edge medical science with leading digital technology. Sami, an immigrant from Finland with a physics background and an MBA from Stanford, co-founded, took public, and then sold Trulia, an online real estate marketplace, for $3.4 Billion. He did this before he was 40 years old. Then he discovered that despite being a world-class athlete (literally—he won a world triathlon championship in his age group), he had pre-diabetes. After researching on his own, Sami connected with two highly published, world-class nutritional scientists who had been studying the ketogenic nutirtional approach for decades. One being Steve Phinney, a Stanford-trained physician with a PhD in nutrition from MIT; and the other being Jeff Volek PhD, one of the most highly published researchers in the ketogenic genre, with over 300 peer-reviewed publications. The three decided to merge cutting-edge medical science with Sami's software and technology background. And, Virta Health was born—an online specialty medical clinic that reverses type 2 diabetes, without medication or surgery. Their goal - that is, Virta's corporate mission- is to reverse diabetes in over 100 million people by 2025! There are many remarkable aspects to this story, but just keep in mind that Sami is a guy who had no medical/clinical background, and within a couple of years has a company that is licensed to provide specialty medical care in all 50 states within the U.S. It is our belief that this is not an aberration; but rather an emerging trend that will continue to accelerate as more entrants from the digital technology world make their way into healthcare delivery, and begin to collaborate closely with evidence-based authorities in clinical medicine. [For further evidence of this, you can view podcast episode #16 with Aaron Martin at Providence Health St Joseph; or podcast episode #12 with Sean Duffy at Omada Health; or podcast episode #11 with Eyal Gura at ZebraMed; or podcast episode #6 with Joanna Strober at Kurbo - as other brilliant examples of this trail blazing trend.] Getting back to Sami & Virta Health, the immediate and understandable response to hearing about this might be skepticism. How can you meaningfully connect with patients and treat them effectively via an online service? In this interview Sami shares some early results and outcomes that might surprise you. Virta Health has a Net Promoter Score (broadly used measure of customer satisfaction & loyalty) of 70—on par with Apple, The university-based research studies Virta has conducted to date are showing type 2 diabetes reversal rates of nearly 60%, with adherence of over 80%. It’s still early on, but the results, to date, are promising. And the trail that Sami - and others like him - are blazing, is one that would be very worthwhile listening to and learning from. Disclosure: Dr. Zeev Neuwirth sits on the Industry Advisory Board for Virta. He has been collaborating (non-paid) with Sami Inkinen and his colleagues, even prior to the launch of Virta - driven by a genuine professional and personal desire to improve the care of people with diabetes. Dr. Neuwirth wasn’t going to post this interview publicly because of concerns related to a perceived conflict of interest; but he felt this story was too important not to share. Dr. Neuwirth holds stock options in Virta; but receives no payment or other remuneration for this podcast episode, or any other discussion of Virta.

Sami Inkinen is the Founder & CEO @ Virta Health, the startup on a mission to reverse type 2 diabetes for 100m people by 2025. They have raised over $35m in funding from the likes of Max Levchin, Ev William's Obvious Ventures, Paypal, Ray Tonsing @ Caffeinated Capital and previous 20VC guest, Bob Kocher @ Venrock. Previously, Sami was a co-founder, COO and President of Trulia until it’s IPO and eventual sale for $3.6B. Sami, an avid athlete, is a triathlon world champion in his age group, and recently rowed across the Pacific Ocean from California to Hawaii unsupported with his wife at a record speed to raise awareness about healthy nutrition. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Sami made his way into the world of startups, came to co-found Trulia and then realized his mission to reverse type 2 diabetes with Virta? 2.) Why does Sami disagree with conventional wisdom and say you learn "more from success than you do from failure"? What are the educational benefits of success that you do not get from failure? What did Sami learn from his Trulia journey? 3.) Why does Sami believe that CEOs should read less and listen less? What are the benefits to not empathizing extensively with the problems of the team? What operational structure must be in place for this level of management to occur? 4.) How does Sami compare VC funding to real estate mortgages? Why does Sami believe that it is always better to raise little? What is the one thing time, money and shelf-space all have in common? 5.) What does Sami mean when he says "CEOs must look after themselves like athletes"? What are Sami's top health and nutrition tips for founders and operators with hugely busy lives? For decades we’ve heard that diabetes prevention is simple—lose weight, eat less, and exercise more. But something is wrong with the conventional wisdom. Nearly 115 million people live with either diabetes or prediabetes in the United States, and that number is growing. It is time to reverse this trend. Virta was founded in 2014 with the goal of reversing diabetes in 100 million people by 2025. They have made this possible through advancements in the science of nutritional biochemistry and technology that is changing the diabetes care model. James McCarter, MD, PhD, is Head of Research at Virta, and in this interview, Dr McCarter explains how Virta is using a combination of a very low carb, ketogenic diet together with 1-on-1 health coaches and some sophisticated machine learning techniques to predict sentiment in natural language and spot anomalies in blood biomarkers. After the recording was made, Dr McCarter realised that he was off by about a decade on Joslin. Rather than 1920s, Dr. Elliott Joslin actually began keeping a diabetes registry early in the 20th century and published The Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus in 1917. “Joslin carried out extensive metabolic balance studies examining fasting and feeding in patients with varying severities of diabetes. His findings would help to validate the observations of Frederick Madison Allen regarding the benefit of carbohydrate- and calorie-restricted diets.” Here’s the outline of this interview with James McCarter, MD, PhD: [00:01:00] Divergence, Inc. Entrepreneur and athlete Sami Inkinen, along with his wife, rowed 2,750 miles over 45 days without using any of the traditional “athlete foods” conventional knowledge says are essential: sugars and carbs. They didn’t starve, far from it. They came out of it healthier than can be expected from such an endeavor. Why? As fit as Inkinen is, he developed prediabetes by following the standard diet and surmised that sugar was the culprit. If someone like Inkinen is vulnerable, we should all be aware. Inkinen recounts his amazing journey from California to Hawaii.Lessons: 1. The key to success is anything is a growth mindset: Don’t go through an experience, grow through it. 2. Sometimes you have to face a challenge as if you were eating an elephant, one piece at a time, slowly, as best you can. 3. The only way to escape an unpleasant experience is to embrace it fully, not fight it.

Last night Pete and got to interview Donal Oniell from Cereal Killers movie fame. We loved both movies and CK2 'Run on Fat' makes it pretty damn clear what we have not only been talking about but living it for so long now. "The science is coming" but the athletes that are open and willing will be the ones reaping the rewards. I'm stoked we got to record this interview and help push this message out to the world for athletes and non athletes alike. Performance is important ... but not as important as your health. Why not attain both? In Today’s Episode We Cover: Overweight Endurance athletes. The Science is Coming. Ketones. Breaking records. The NEED for this mineral. Health and Performance can it be achieved or are just bad bed fellows. You cannot out train a shitty diet. The rise of the Pemmican. Donals daily diet and his favourite dish. Show Links: Cereal Killers 2 - Run on Fat Cereal Killers 2 Run on Fat charts world class triathlete Sami Inkinen’s transition from pre-diabetic sugar burner to a faster, healthier, fat fueled endurance athlete under the guidance of New York Times bestselling author Dr Stephen Phinney. When Sami embarks on an epic anti sugar crusade with his wife Meredith – rowing 4,000 kms unsupported from California to Hawaii – their remarkable journey reveals the astonishing performance benefits and pitfalls of successful fat fueling strategies for athletic performance. As more and more evidence emerges of world class athletes adopting a similar protocol – with remarkable results in some cases – “Run on Fat” challenges the very foundations of sports nutrition. #39 We chat to Sami Inkinen, a world class triathlete and tech entrepreneur. Whilst we don't encourage anyone to eat 5000 calories of saturated fat a day, we feel it's a very important message that Sami shares with us. Sami and his wife recently did a phenomenal achievement, where they physically rowed from California to Hawaii. It took them 45 days straight rowing, up to 18 hours a day, and some days they didn't even get any sleep. Awesome achievement, but more importantly was the message behind it, as they did it without the use of any sugar and sports gels, pushing the message that you don't need sugar to power the body daily, not even as a world-class athlete like that. So they did it running on, yes, about 70 to 75 percent fat on each meal, and we were very keen to get him on the show and pick his brains about this, because there are so many things we can learn from it. In this episode we talk about: How he ended up being involved in the documentary Cereal Killers Two Why he decided to embark on his toughest challenge yet, rowing to Hawaii from San Francisco How they prepared for their meals. Sami was eating a whopping 8,000 calories a day! The effects of eating 5000 calories of saturated fat a day whilst rowing What he uses instead of sports drinks What Sami eats in a typical day And much much more… CLICK HERE for all Episodes of 180TV www.180nutrition.com.au

This week's guest is Sami Inkinen, co-founder of Trulia, rowed across the pacific with his wife Meredith to bring awareness to the benefits of a high fat diet and the perils of sugar. Sami was inspired by the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand to have an adventure in the name of awareness. Sami and Meredith created Fat Chance Row. They had no experience rowing yet rowed 2800 miles and broke a record to get to Hawaii in 45 days. Their experience was equal to running two marathons a day.

Should he avoid mushrooms and other fungi? What else should he avoid? What supplements might help? In my response to Keith, I recommend: -Metal Free Heavy Metal Detoxification Formula combined with Body Detox - follow use instructions for these exactly as on bottles. Dr. David Minkoff recommends to take Metal Free in the morning and Body Detox before bed. -6mg of iodine per day -1-2 servings edible clay per day (i.e. Edible Earth) -Oral magnesium in supplemental form (around 400-600mg/day, or until you get loose stool) -A high quality greens supplement -Full spectrum antioxidant -High quality omega 3 + Vitamin D ad Vitamin A supplementation (i.e. cod liver oil). Recommend SuperEssentials and TwinLab Cod Liver Oil. Finally, I highly recommend Dr. Mark Sircus's book: "Nuclear Toxicity Syndrome". ------------------------------------------------------ Toni asks: Husband is an endurance bike racer who is not sleeping well and is constantly fatigued, but doctors won't acknowledge it as real. What can help? In my response to Toni, I reference this article I did on adrenal fatigue: What To Do When You're Overtrained, including this anecdote: 1. Frequent Cold Exposure – Cold immersion can lower inflammation, and markers of inflammatory damage such as CRP or interleukin – which allows the body to bounce back faster from an overreached state. In my case, I have access to a very cold river that currently runs at about 40-45 degrees Farenheit, so when I saw those HRV scores begin to drop, I began full body immersion for 20-30 minutes a day, 1-2x/day (you can also achieve this in an ice bath if you live in a warmer climate without access to a cold body of water). I combined with wearing 110% compression tights and shirt filled with ice sleeves while I was sitting at home working. 2. Adaptogenic Herbs – I use a Chinese Adaptogenic Herb complex called Tian Chi, and I began to double dose on an empty stomach 1-2x/day, in mid-morning and/or mid-afternoon. The ingredients of Tian Chi include compounds that help to relieve adrenal gland stress and support proper adrenal function, including ashwaganda, eleuthero, epemedium and gotu kola. These type of compounds are incredibly effective at restoring function to your adrenal glands when you've been asking yourself to churn out adrenaline, epinephrine, norepinephrine, etc. with day after day of hard training. 3. Deep Sleep – During deep sleep, your body releases large amounts of growth hormone for repair and recovery, and initiates cellular turnover that can speed up removal of “junk” from a taxed musculoskeletal system. Once I saw my HRV score drop, my goal was to get myself into a deep sleep phase as quickly as possible, and I did this by using an Earthpulse Sleep Machine device to activate my “deep sleep” Delta brain waves, along with sleeping in a very dark room, using 500mg magnesium before bed, and making sure to use my blue-light blocking glasses at any point after 4pm in the afternoon. 4. Anti-Inflammatory Diet – Because they result in a net acidic load when you metabolize them, pro-inflammatory foods will increase inflammation and increase your pain from the inflammation. These include processed meats, foods high in omega 6 fatty acids like roasted seeds and nuts, pastries and cereals, starches, and even nightshade plants like regular potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. When you're injured or overtrained and looking for every available advantage, you should instead prioritize foods with natural anti-inflammatory properties, like dark-skinned fruits and vegetables (pomegranates, cherries, blueberries, plums, artichokes, spinach and broccoli are excellent), high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids (cold-water fish, cod liver oil, fish oil, etc.) and natural herbal anti-inflammatories like turmeric, curcumin, garlic and ginger, or something like Capraflex, which has all that. Jeff asks: How can you recover from a lateral meniscus removal? He has some hyaluronic acid and capraflex. In my response to Jeff, I mention this free meniscus repair rehab program pdf. ------------------------------------------------------ Jenna asks: Are there any athletic or performance benefits from vibration plates? Can you lose weight from just standing on it? In my response, I mention Power Plate vibration platforms. ------------------------------------------------------ Michael asks: What does Ben think of the "Elevation Training Mask", specifically the 2.0 version? In my response, I mention the Elevation Training Mask. Bree asks: What is the difference between sprouting and soaking? ------------------------------------------------------ Augie asks: What are your top RSS feeds for exercise, performance, fitness, diet, etc? -Fitness.AllTop.com (varies) -StoneHearthNewsletters.com (varies) -TheEatingAcademy.com (Peter Attia) -PerfectHealthDiet.com (Paul Jaminet) -Cholesterol-and-health.com (Chris Masterjohn) -International Medical Veritas Association (Mark Sircus) -LifeHacker.com (varies) -TrackYourPlaque (Dr. William Davis) -Everymantri.com (Roman Mica) -EndurancePlanet.com -BenGreenfieldFitness.com ------------------------------------------------------ Deb asks: What to do about sugar with coffee addiction? In my response to Deb, I recommend: -VIDEO: 5 Powerful Calorie Control Tricks To Help You Eat Less Food: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2011/10/appetitecontrol/ -VIDEO: 5 Ways To Suppress Your Appetite Without Taking Any Special Pills or Capsules: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2011/05/5-ways-to-suppress-your-appetite-without-taking-any-special-pills-or-capsules/ -PODCAST: How To Stop Carbohydrate Cravings In Their Tracks: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2011/08/episode-160-how-to-stop-carbohydrate-cravings-in-their-tracks/ -PODCAST: Inner Circle Free Episode: How To Stop Sugar & Carbohydrate Cravings In Their Tracks: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2010/10/inner-circle-podcast-3-how-to-stop-sugar-carbohydrate-cravings-in-their-tracks/ -ARTICLE: A Simple Six-Step System for Eliminating Food Cravings: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2010/05/a-simple-six-step-system-for-eliminating-food-cravings/ -ARTICLE: How To Fight Candy Cravings: http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/2012/10/how-to-fight-candy-cravings/ Finally, I recommend Deb check out The Diet Dominator at http://www.thedietdominator.com ------------------------------------------------------ Panka says: I want to increase my body weight, am super-skinny, and want to become a mesomorph from an ectomorph. What would be a good diet and exercise plan? In my response to Panka, I mention my book "Get Fit Guy's Guide To Achieving Your Ideal Body" at http://www.GetFitGuy.com ------------------------------------------------------ Seth asks: How to interpret your training logs and use them to get better? In my response to Seth, I mention Sami Inkinen's "Incurable Data Geek" and Joe Friel's Training blog. Mention things like cardiac drift, average power/speed, RPE, recovery time what I personally do: heart rate variability, how fast I ride to the YMCA, how fast I can do 10x30s sprint on treadmill, how fast I can swim 10x100 ------------------------------------------------------ Craig wants to know how to maintain a high run cadence. ------------------------------------------------------ Thomas wants to know if you could increase your risk of heart attack from cold exposure since when you train in the cold the cold weather on your torso speeds your heart rate up but cold on your face slows your heart rate down. He wants to know if he should cover his hands and feet. ------------------------------------------------------ 7 year old Lucas wants to know what he should eat before his hockey games. In my response, I mention my article: 5 Ways That Workout Nutrition Should be Different For Young People and Children ------------------------------------------------------ Joe wants to know why his body temperature is down to 92.6 degrees. Also, if you're in the first two weeks of your cycle your temperature will be about 1/2 degree lower than the second half. Even malnutrition and starvation can cause your body temperature to be low, but it's probably because the body down regulates the thyroid so you'll live longer. In my response to Joe, I mention WellnessFX or DirectLabs for getting these kind of tests done, and also recommend a Spectracell analysis.
